Developing A Hardware Platform For A Low-Power, Low-Cost, Size-Constrained Biomechanical Telemetry System, Aditya Balasubramanian

Open Access Theses

As sport-related traumatic brain injuries face increasing attention from the media and the general public, the need to be able to detect brain injury quickly, inexpensively and accurately is more important than ever. Commercially-available event-based systems exist that claim to achieve this goal; however, they collect little to no continuous-time data and primarily indicate when a pre-determined acceleration threshold has been exceeded under the unvalidated assumption that a potentially concussive blow has occurred. Recent findings by the Purdue Neurotrauma Group (PNG) have indicated that repeated exposure to both concussive and subconcussive blows can result in cumulative trauma disorder. To track …

Studies In Software-Defined Radio System Implementation, Harold A. Haldren Iii Apr 2014

Studies In Software-Defined Radio System Implementation, Harold A. Haldren Iii

Senior Honors Theses

Over the past decade, software-defined radios (SDRs) have an increasingly prevalent aspect of wireless communication systems. Different than traditional hardware radios which implement radio protocols using static electrical circuit, SDRs implement significant aspects of physical radio protocol using software programs running on a host processor. Because they use software to implement most of the radio functionality, SDRs are much more easily modified, edited, and upgraded than their hardware-defined counterparts. Consequently, researchers and developers have been developing previously hardware-defined radio systems within software. Thus, communication standards can be tested under different conditions or swapped out entirely by simply changing some code. …

Characterization Of An Impulse Radiating Antenna In The Near Field, Chandra Barjracharya Apr 2014

Characterization Of An Impulse Radiating Antenna In The Near Field, Chandra Barjracharya

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

The biological effects of intense sub-nanosecond pulses on tissues or cells are in the dielectric domain and not based on thermal loading as in the conventional microwave radiation, which may lead to an entirely new approach of modifying cell functions. Moreover, the resulting cell functional change may be detected with higher resolution by broadband, sub-nanosecond pulses than conventional narrowband systems. The delivery of intense sub-nanosecond pulses to near-field biological tissues, however, has not been studied, not mentioning the focal depth and volume. In this dissertation, for the first time, an impulse radiating antenna with a balanced feed structure is studied …

Transparent Spectrum Co-Access In Cognitive Radio Networks, Jonathan Daniel Backens Apr 2014

Transparent Spectrum Co-Access In Cognitive Radio Networks, Jonathan Daniel Backens

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

The licensed wireless spectrum is currently under-utilized by as much as 85%. Cognitive radio networks have been proposed to employ dynamic spectrum access to share this under-utilized spectrum between licensed primary user transmissions and unlicensed secondary user transmissions. Current secondary user opportunistic spectrum access methods, however, remain limited in their ability to provide enough incentive to convince primary users to share the licensed spectrum, and they rely on primary user absence to guarantee secondary user performance. These challenges are addressed by developing a Dynamic Spectrum Co-Access Architecture (DSCA) that allows secondary user transmissions to co-access transparently and concurrently with primary …

Large-Scale Site And Frequency Diversity In Urban Peer-To-Peer Channels For Six Public Safety Frequency Bands, David W. Matolak, Kate A. Remley, Christopher L. Holloway, Qian Zhang, Qiong Wu

Faculty Publications

We report on peer-to-peer large-scale wireless channel characteristics for an urban environment in six public-safety bands, for five simultaneous receiving sites. Results are based upon measurements taken in Denver in July 2009 with stationary receivers and a pedestrian transmitter. The six frequencies at which we measured are (in MHz) 430, 750, 905, 1834, 2400, and 4860. We quantify both site and frequency diversity, and show that 5-site selection yields minimum average gains of 15 dB in mean received power levels; 5-site selection diversity also reduces received power variation by 17-29 dB, depending on frequency. Frequency diversity yields similar gains. By …

Relationship Between Photofixed Condensate, Effluent And Bulk Composition Of Several Common Rtv Materials, Fen Zhou Hanrahan, Natale J. Ianno

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications

Raman spectroscopy and Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy are employed to analyze the bulk compositions of five kinds of Room Temperature Vulcanized (RTV) silicones (CV2568, RTV566, DC93-500, SCV2590 and SCV2590-2) that are commonly employed in orbiting spacecraft. It is found that polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), silicon dioxide, Tetra-n-propylsilicate (NPS), silicic acid, tetraethyl orthosilicate, and trimethylsilanol are contained in all of them. The outgassing products from those silicones are characterized by FTIR. By comparing the position of the peaks, it is found that the outgassing products of each material are PDMS and NPS which are consistent with the compositions of samples determined with …

Studies In Error Correction Coding, Hannah Kirse Apr 2014

Studies In Error Correction Coding, Hannah Kirse

Senior Honors Theses

For a proper understanding of the implementation of error correction coding schemes, a basic knowledge of communication channels and networks is necessary. Communication channels incur several types of errors, including noise and signal attenuation. Consequently, the benefits of a particular error control scheme are determined by the errors which occur most frequently. First, the types of transmissions across which errors occur will be considered. Subsequently, the types of errors that can appear during these transmissions and a short discussion of the cause of errors are necessary to understand the several types of errors that can occur. Afterward, the implementation of …

Dynamic Characteristic Identification Of Seismic-Excited Multi-Story Buildings Through Response-Only Technique, Agung Budipriyanto, Priyo Suprobo

Makara Journal of Technology

Identifying dynamic characteristics of civil engineering structures is still a challenging task. It intends to assess behavior of the structures under time-dependent loads. This paper discusses a methodology suitable for identifying the characteristics of multi-story buildings using only their measured response under earthquake ground excitations. Appropriateness of technique used for structural identification was corroborated through coherence of the structure’s responses. The methodology was applied for identifying the characteristics of 14-story and 20-story office buildings located in a high seismic region. Responses of these two buildings recorded during three different seismic ground motions were investigated. The buildings’ response spectral densities and …

Synthesis And Characterization Of Soy-Based Polyurethane Foam With Utilization Of Ethylene Glycol In Polyol, Flora Elvistia Firdaus

Makara Journal of Technology

The use of vegetable oils on replacing petroleum has attracted attention of many researchers. The chemical structure of vegetable oils are different from petrochemicals, so the structure of soybean oil has to be chemically modified through its unsaturated fatty acid chain in triglyceride. A two step process was conducted for the preparation of soy-polyol in designated temperatures; 50 °C, 60 °C, and 70 °C. Ethylene glycol (EG) as co-reagent was taking part in soy-polyol synthesis, and the soy-polyol was used as a sole polyol for polyurethane synthesis. Referred to the previous study, the existence of EG in polyurethane synthesis can …

Bioethanol Production From Iles-Iles And Sorghum Starch As Raw Materials (Effect Of Cacl 2 Addition And Saccharification Time), Kusmiyati Kusmiyati, Ali Mahmudi

Makara Journal of Technology

Bioethanol produced from agricultural sources is one alternative energy that has been developed to substitute for petroleum. However, the use of food sources such as corn and cassava to produce bioethanol still face obstacles that lead to the scarcity of food and an increase in food prices. The aim of this study was to produce bioethanol from sorghum and iles-iles, which are not used by humans as food, especially in Indonesia. For both materials, the variables studied were saccharification time (4, 8, 24, and 48 h) and concentration of CaCl2 added to the liquefaction slurry (0, 100, 200, 300, and …

Performance Evaluation Of An Optimized Floating Breakwater In Oblique Waves With A Higher-Order Boundary Element Method, Faisal Mahmuddin, Masashi Kashiwagi

Makara Journal of Technology

In the previous study, the optimal performance of a two-dimensional (2D) floating breakwater shape was obtained. The performance of this shape was also confirmed with a model experiment in a towing tank. Moreover, the shape’s performance in three dimensions (3D) was investigated in a subsequent study. However, to predict the shape’s performance in a real application more accurately, the shape’s characteristics in oblique waves must also be evaluated. In this study, the performance and characteristics of the model (hydrodynamic forces, body motions, wave elevations, and drift forces) are computed using a higher-order boundary element method (HOBEM). The HOBEM, which is …

Hybrid Biogeography-Based Evolutionary Algorithms, Haiping Ma, Dan Simon, Minrui Fei, Xinzhan Shu, Zixiang Chen Apr 2014

Hybrid Biogeography-Based Evolutionary Algorithms, Haiping Ma, Dan Simon, Minrui Fei, Xinzhan Shu, Zixiang Chen

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Hybrid evolutionary algorithms (EAs) are effective optimization methods that combine multiple EAs. We propose several hybrid EAs by combining some recently-developed EAs with a biogeography-based hybridization strategy. We test our hybrid EAs on the continuous optimization benchmarks from the 2013 Congress on Evolutionary Computation (CEC) and on some real-world traveling salesman problems. The new hybrid EAs include two approaches to hybridization: (1) iteration-level hybridization, in which various EAs and BBO are executed in sequence; and (2) algorithm-level hybridization, which runs various EAs independently and then exchanges information between them using ideas from biogeography. Our empirical study shows that the new …

Position/Speed Sensorless Control For Permanent-Magnet Synchronous Machines, Yue Zhao Apr 2014

Position/Speed Sensorless Control For Permanent-Magnet Synchronous Machines, Yue Zhao

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Permanent-magnet synchronous machines (PMSMs) are widely used in industrial applications owing to their distinctive advantages, such as high efficiency, high power density, and wide constant power region. To achieve high-performance field oriented control, accurate rotor position information, which is usually measured by rotary encoders or resolvers, is indispensable. However, the use of these sensors increases the cost, size, weight, and wiring complexity and reduces the mechanical robustness and the reliability of the overall PMSM drive systems. The goal of the research for this dissertation was to develop a rotor position/speed sensorless control system with performance comparable to the sensor-based control …

Common methods for classifying choropleth map features typically form classes based on a single feature attribute. This technical note reviews the use of the k-means clustering algorithm to perform feature classification using multiple feature attributes. The k-means clustering algorithm is described and compared to other common classification methods, and two examples of choropleth maps prepared using k-means clustering are provided.

Real-Time Control Of Shunt Active Power Filter Under Distorted Grid Voltage And Unbalanced Load Condition Using Self Tuning Filter, Samet Biricik, Soydan Redif, Ozgur Ozerdem, Shafiuzzaman K. Khadem, Malabika Basu Apr 2014

Real-Time Control Of Shunt Active Power Filter Under Distorted Grid Voltage And Unbalanced Load Condition Using Self Tuning Filter, Samet Biricik, Soydan Redif, Ozgur Ozerdem, Shafiuzzaman K. Khadem, Malabika Basu

Articles

In this paper, an alternative control method is proposed to improve the harmonic suppression efficiency of the active power filter in a distorted and an unbalanced power system to compensate for the perturbations caused by the unbalanced non-linear loads. The proposed method uses a self-tuning filter (STF) to process the grid voltage in order to provide a uniform reference voltage to obtain the correct angular position of the phase locked loop. Moreover, the required compensation currents are obtained by implementing another STF in the transformed set of currents in order to separate the fundamental and the harmonic currents. This allows …

Generation Of Bipolar Nanosecond Pulses, Sambasiva Rao Rajulapati Apr 2014

Generation Of Bipolar Nanosecond Pulses, Sambasiva Rao Rajulapati

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Bipolar pulse generation has been studied using transmission line technology, which was mainly used for monopolar pulse generation. In this thesis, low impedance, high current, nanosecond pulse generators were designed, constructed and tested. Five transmission lines were connected in parallel, so the impedance was 10 n. The transmission lines were switched by a spark gap switch operated in air. The closing of the switch creates a matched condition on one side of the transmission lines and a short circuit on the other side of the transmission lines. When the transmission lines are precharged, one of the two waves in opposite …

Synthesis Of Nanolaminate Structures Of Alternating Layers Of Lead Telluride And Lead Selenide By Atomic Layer Deposition For Thermoelectric Applications, Arun Deepak Ramalingom Pillai Apr 2014

Synthesis Of Nanolaminate Structures Of Alternating Layers Of Lead Telluride And Lead Selenide By Atomic Layer Deposition For Thermoelectric Applications, Arun Deepak Ramalingom Pillai

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Alloys composed of lead, telluride and selenide compounds exhibit very high figure of merit ZT values at intermediate temperatures, making them exceptional thermoelectric materials in a particular temperature range. Advancement in thermoelectric devices and applications hinges on increasing ZT, which is a ratio of the thermoelectric power factor to the thermal conductivity. One of the proposed avenues to achieving this goal is the use of low dimensional structures such as quantum wells, quantum dots, superlattices (SL) and nanolaminates to affect heat transport. SL structures can effectively confine charge carriers as well as scatter phonons which contribute significantly to thermal conductivity. …

Reliability Of Heterogeneous Distributed Computing Systems In The Presence Of Correlated Failures, Jorge E. Pezoa, Majeed M. Hayat Apr 2014

Reliability Of Heterogeneous Distributed Computing Systems In The Presence Of Correlated Failures, Jorge E. Pezoa, Majeed M. Hayat

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

While the reliability of distributed-computing systems (DCSs) has been widely studied under the assumption that computing elements (CEs) fail independently, the impact of correlated failures of CEs on the reliability remains an open question. Here, the problem of modeling and assessing the impact of stochastic, correlated failures on the service reliability of applications running on DCSs is tackled. The service reliability is modeled using an integrated analytical and Monte-Carlo (MC) approach. The analytical component of the model comprises a generalization of a previously developed model for reliability of non-Markovian DCSs to a setting where specific patterns of simultaneous failures in …

An Adaptive Kalman Filter For Voltage Sag Detection In Power Systems, Hisham Odeh Alrawashdeh Apr 2014

An Adaptive Kalman Filter For Voltage Sag Detection In Power Systems, Hisham Odeh Alrawashdeh

Dissertations

The exact values of the noise covariance matrix of the Kalman filter state vector Q and the measured signal noise covariance matrix R must be obtained in order to achieve the optimal performance of the Kalman filter. There have been many techniques and assumptions made to evaluate and compute Q and R. The effects of Q and R are investigated in detail in this dissertation. Based on these investigations, the Kalman filter has been modeled to detect the fundamental signal amplitude variations of power system signals. This technique helps in evaluating voltage sags in power systems.

Two algorithms are …

In this paper, we discuss our experience using a set of games called "Gaming Against Plagiarism" to increase awareness in different types of research misconduct, and highlight the ramification of committing such misconducts among undergraduate engineering students. Gaming Against Plagiarism consists of three mini-games that address research misconduct. The types of research misconduct addressed are stealing, misquoting, patchwriting, insufficient paraphrasing, self-plagiarism, data falsification, and data fabrication. In these games, students are virtually put into situations involving research misconduct. The students either have to identify the type of misconduct or make an ethical decision by avoiding research misconduct. We assessed the …

Through-Silicon-Via Inductor: Is It Real Or Just A Fantasy?, Umamaheswara Rao Tida, Cheng Zhuo, Yiyu Shi Mar 2014

Through-Silicon-Via Inductor: Is It Real Or Just A Fantasy?, Umamaheswara Rao Tida, Cheng Zhuo, Yiyu Shi

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Through-silicon-vias (TSVs) can potentially be used to implement inductors in three-dimensional (3D) integrated systems for minimal footprint and large inductance. However, different from conventional 2D spiral inductors, TSV inductors are fully buried in the lossy substrate, thus suffering from low quality factor. In this paper, we propose a novel shield mechanism utilizing the micro-channel, a technique conventionally used for heat removal, to reduce the substrate loss. This technique increases the quality factor and the inductance of the TSV inductor by up to 21x and 17x respectively. It enables us to implement TSV inductors of up to 38x smaller area and …

Memristor-Based Neuron Circuit And Method For Applying Learning Algorithm In Spice, Christopher Yakopcic, R. Hasan, T.M. Taha, M. Mclean, D. Palmer

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

The learning of nonlinearly separable functions in cascaded memristor crossbar circuits is described and the feasibility of using them to develop low-power neuromorphic processors is demonstrated. This is the first study evaluating the training of memristor crossbars through SPICE simulations. It is important to capture the alternate current paths and wire resistance inherent in these circuits. The simulations show that neural network learning algorithms are able to train in the presence of alternate current paths and wire resistances. The fact that the approach reduces the area by three times and power by two orders of magnitude compared with the existing …

A Reference System For Animal Biometrics: Application To The Northern Leopard Frog, D. Petrovska-Delacrétaz, A. Edwards, J. Chiasson, G. Chollet, D. Pilliod

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Reference systems and public databases are available for human biometrics, but to our knowledge nothing is available for animal biometrics. This is surprising because animals are not required to give their agreement to be in a database. This paper proposes a reference system and database for the northern leopard frog (Lithobates pipiens). Both are available for reproducible experiments. Results of both open set and closed set experiments are given.
