Anisotropy Modulations Of Femtosecond Laser Pulse Induced Periodic Surface Structures On Silicon By Adjusting Double Pulse Delay, Weina Han, Lan Jiang, Xiaowei Li, Qingsong Wang, Hao Li, Yongfeng Lu
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications
We demonstrate that the polarization-dependent anisotropy of the laser-induced periodic surface structure (LIPSS) on silicon can be adjusted by designing a femtosecond laser pulse train (800 nm, 50 fs, 1 kHz). By varying the pulse delay from 100 to 1600 fs within a double pulse train to reduce the deposited pulse energy, which weakens the directional surface plasmon polarition (SPP)-laser energy coupling based on the initial formed ripple structure, the polarization-dependent geometrical morphology of the LIPSS evolves from a nearly isotropic circular shape to a somewhat elongated elliptical shape. Meanwhile, the controllable anisotropy of the two-dimensional scanned-line widths with different …
Probabilistic Analysis For Reliable Logic Circuits, Scott Blakely
Probabilistic Analysis For Reliable Logic Circuits, Scott Blakely
Dissertations and Theses
Continued aggressive scaling of electronic technology poses obstacles for maintaining circuit reliability. To this end, analysis of reliability is of increasing importance. Large scale number of inputs and gates or correlations of failures render such analysis computationally complex. This paper presents an accurate framework for reliability analysis of logic circuits, while inherently handling reconvergent fan-out without additional complexity. Combinational circuits are modeled stochastically as Discrete-Time Markov Chains, where propagation of node logic levels and error probability distributions through circuitry are used to determine error probabilities at nodes in the circuit. Model construction is scalable, as it is done so on …

Horseradish Peroxidase-Attapulgite Clay Nanocomposites: Fabrication And Application To Sensing The Extracellular H2O2 Released From Cells, Ping Wu, Chen-Xin Cai
Journal of Electrochemistry
The nanostructured attapulgite clay was employed as a support matrix for immobilizing horseradish peroxidase (HRP). FTIR and electrochemical methods demonstrated that HRP had been effectively assembled on attapulgite surface with the formation of HRP-attapulgite nanocomposites. The HRP-attapulgite hybrid was deposited on the glassy carbon (GC) electrode forming the HRP-attapulgite/GC electrode. Cyclic voltammetric results showed a pair of well-defined redox peaks, which were ascribed to direct electron transfer (DET) of HRP, with the formal potential E0′ = -335 mV (vs. SCE) in the phosphate buffer solution (PBS, pH 7.0). The dependence of E0′ on solution pH indicated …

The Ionic Diffusion Model For The Solid Oxide Cathode And Its Verification By The Electrolysis Of Ta2O5 In Molten Cacl2, Hua-Lin Chen, Zhi-Yong Wang, Xian-Bo Jin, George Z. Chen
Journal of Electrochemistry
The deoxidation speed of a solid oxide cathode in molten CaCl2 can be estimated by the PRS steady diffusion model of O2-, which correlates the deoxidation speed with the precursor porosity, P, the metal-to-oxide molar volume ratio, R, and the cathode volume shrinkage S. The PRS model indicates that the porosity of the oxide cathode has important influence on the deoxidation speed, and provides a very simple equation for the prediction of the optimal cathode porosity. For the electrolysis of Ta2O5, the porosity of the cathode is better to be within 50%. …

The Na2MnPO4F is one of the promising cathode materials for the sodium ion batteries. In the paper, we employed the ex situ X-ray diffraction and solid state NMR techniques to study the charge and discharge processes of this material, including the crystal structure and sodium sites changes. The ex situ x-ray diffraction patterns showed that two new diffraction peaks could be observed at 31o and 36o indicating an intermediate phase formed with the extraction of Na+. From the 23Na MAS NMR spectrum of the material, three peaks were seen at -209 …

Effects Of Oxygen Coverage And Hydrated Proton Model On The Dft Calculation Of Oxygen Reduction Pathways On The Pt(111) Surface, Li-Hui Ou, Sheng-Li Chen
Journal of Electrochemistry
DFT calculation is used to study various possible steps in the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), including the adsorption and dissociation process of O2 and the serial protonation process of dissociated products to form H2O on the Pt(111) surface. By using slabs of different sizes, and different numbers of pre-adsorbed oxygen atoms, the coverage effects on the pathways are investigated. The calculated results using different hydrated proton models are also compared. It is shown that the initial step of the ORR is the formation of a protonated end-on chemisorbed state of OOH*, which can transform to an unprotonated …

Biomaterial Testing Methodology For Long-Term In Vivo Applications: Silicon Carbide Corrosion Resistance, Biocompatibility And Hemocompatibility, Maysam Nezafati
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Biomedical devices that function in-vivo offer a tremendous promise to improve the quality of life for many who suffer from disease and trauma. The most important consideration for these devices is that they interact with the physiological environment as designed without initiating a deleterious inflammatory response. ISO 10993 outlines the current international guideline for investigating the biocompatibility of such devices. Numerous groups report the use of ISO 10993 as the basis for their experimental evaluation of candidate materials for neuroprosthetics, as well as other biomedical devices, however most of these reports fail to completely comply with the standard. This leads …

Integrated Electrostatically- And Piezoelectrically-Transduced Contour-Mode Mems Resonator On Silicon-On-Insulator (Soi) Wafer, I-Tsang Wu
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Due to the recent rapid growth in personal mobile communication devices (smartphones, PDA's, tablets, etc.), the wireless market is always looking for new ways to further miniaturize the RF front-ends while reducing the cost and power consumption. For many years, wireless transceivers and subsystems have been relying on high quality factor (Q) passives (e.g., quartz crystal, ceramics) to implement oscillators, filters, and other key RF front-end circuitry elements. However, these off-chip discrete components occupy large chip area and require power-demanding interfacing circuits. As a result, a great deal of research effort has been devoted to the development of …

Terahertz Photoacoustic Spectroscopy Using An Mems Cantilever Sensor, Nathan E. Giauvitz, Ronald A. Coutu Jr., Ivan R. Medvedev, Douglas T. Petkie
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications
In this paper, a microelectromechanical systems cantilever sensor was designed, modeled, and fabricated to measure the photoacoustic (PA) response of gases under very low vacuum conditions. The micromachined devices were fabricated using silicon-on-insulator wafers and then tested in a custom-built, miniature, vacuum chamber during this first-ever demonstration. Terahertz radiation was amplitude modulated to excite the gas under test and perform PA molecular spectroscopy. Experimental data show a predominantly linear response that directly correlates measured cantilever deflection to PA signals. Excellent low pressure (i.e., 2-40 mTorr) methyl cyanide PA spectral data were collected resulting in a system sensitivity of 1.97 × …

Scalable System Design For Covert Mimo Communications, Jason R. Pennington
Theses and Dissertations
In modern communication systems, bandwidth is a limited commodity. Bandwidth efficient systems are needed to meet the demands of the ever-increasing amount of data that users share. Of particular interest is the U.S. Military, where high-resolution pictures and video are used and shared. In these environments, covert communications are necessary while still providing high data rates. The promise of multi-antenna systems providing higher data rates has been shown on a small scale, but limitations in hardware prevent large systems from being implemented.
Proton Damage Effects On Carbon Nanotube Field-Effect Transistors, Evan R. Kemp
Proton Damage Effects On Carbon Nanotube Field-Effect Transistors, Evan R. Kemp
Theses and Dissertations
This research investigated the effects of proton damage on single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) transistors. The transistors were irradiated by 1.8 MeV protons to determine the damage induced in the SWCNTs and the device substrate using Raman spectroscopy, and to observe the effect on transistor functionality by measuring current-voltage characteristics. Irradiation of the SWCNT transistors to a fluence of 1x1013 protons/cm2 resulted in 67% increase in the Raman D/G peak intensity ratio, while at a fluence of 2x1013 protons/cm2 the increase in the D/G ratio was only 18%, likely due to radiation annealing. Current-voltage measurements indicated an …

Active Appearance Model Algorithm With K-Nearest Neighbor Classifier For Face Pose Estimation, Bing-Fei Wu, Chih-Chung Kao, Cheng-Lung Jen, Chia-Rong Chiang, Po-Hung Lai
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
In this paper, a face pose estimation (FPE) algorithm using active appearance model (AAM) with a k-nearest neighbor (kNN) classifier is presented. AAM is a model-based image representation method used to describe non-rigid visual objects, with both shape and texture variations, using a mean vector and linear combinations of a set of variation modes. Since AAM is a deformable model, it has several variations. Owing to the variations, the model is adjusted to the input test face image using iterative searching and fitting. The error, which measures the difference between the model and a test image, is minimized with the …

Linear State Feedback Design For Surge Control Of Axial Flow Compressor Dynamics, Der-Cherng Liaw, Yun-Hua Huang, Wen-Ching Chung
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
Based on Moore and Greitzer’s model [15], the surge behavior of axial flow compression system was found to be attributed to the appearance of Andronov-Hopf bifurcationin [12]. In this paper, we focus on the design of control law to prevent and/or delay the occurrence of the bifurcations, which will then suppress the surge behavior. Both types of linear dynamic state feedback and linear washout filter controllers are proposed. The proposed washout design does not require the explicit knowledge of the operating point and keep the original equilibrium characteristic while the dynamic feedback design will change the equilibrium operating points for …
Dynamic Output Feedback Sliding Mode Controller Design For Chattering Avoidance, Jeang-Lin Chang, Jui-Che Tsai
Dynamic Output Feedback Sliding Mode Controller Design For Chattering Avoidance, Jeang-Lin Chang, Jui-Che Tsai
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
For a class of linear MIMO uncertain systems, a dynamic output feedback sliding mode control algorithm that avoids the chattering problem and high gain control is proposed in this paper. Without using any differentiator, we develop a modified asymptotically stable second order sliding mode control law in which the developed controller can guarantee the finite time convergence to the sliding mode and the system states asymptotically approach to zero. Finally, a numerical example is explained for demonstrating the applicability of the proposed scheme.

Development Of A Strapdown Inertial Navigation System Simulation Platform, Dah-Jing Jwo, Jyun-Han Shih, Chia-Sheng Hsu, Kai-Lun Yu
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
This paper presents a strapdown inertial navigation system (SINS) simulation platform. The numerical simulator solves the navigation equations in navigation frame where the quaternion vector is employed for attitude calculation. The measured quantities (angular body rates and specific force) are generated by the numerical simulator. The results are also confirmed with the navigation solutions given by a commercial inertial navigation system toolbox using the generated body angular rates and specific force of the SINS. The paper can provide the readers with further information for developing their own SINS simulation tools.

Mimo Transmission In Spatially Correlated Fading, Joy Iong-Zon Chen, Chi-Tsung Huang, Yu-Hsing Chien
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
A multiple-input, multiple-output (MIMO) system transmission over a channel characterized by spatially correlated fading is addressed in this article. Two scenarios that involved using well-known statistical fading distributions, correlatedRician and correlated-Nakagami-m fading, were deployed in analysis. The moment-generating function obtained using a stochastic process was applied to determine the ergodic, or average, channel capacity, thus by passing the difficulty traditionally associated with calculating the probability density function of the signal-to-noise ratio. The results of several numerical and Monte-Carlo comparisons are offered for validating the accuracy of the theoretically derived formulae. Furthermore, many plots were designed by combining different numbers of …

Global Localization Using Dead-Reckoning And Kinect Sensors For Robots With Omnidirectional Mecanum Wheels, Ching-Chih Tsai, Feng-Chun Tai, Yu-Cheng Wang
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
This paper presents a low-cost global pose localization method using least-squares method and extended Kalman filter (EKF) for an anthropomorphous dual-arm mobile robot (ADAMR) driven by omnidirectional Mecanum wheels in indoor environments. This method is developed by fusing measurements from the KINECT sensor and four encoders mounted on the omnidirectional Mecanum wheels. The KINECT sensor is used to recognize landmarks in the working environments of the robot, and then obtain the azimuth angles and distances between these landmarks and the robot. Based on these measured information, a static global pose initialization algorithm using least-squares method is applied to estimate both …

A Particle Swarm Optimization-Like Algorithm For Constrained Minimal Spanning Tree Problems, Chun-Chao Yeh, Ying-Che Chien
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
Previous studies have discussed various constrained minimal spanning tree (MST) problems. In this paper, we propose an efficient algorithm for solving a class of constrained MST problems. The proposed PSO (Particle Swarm Optimization)- like strategy for solving constrained MST problems identifies optimal MSTs under degree and delay constraints. The solution quality and computation time of the proposed PLCMST (PSO-Like algorithm for Constrained MST problems) algorithm is compared with two other algorithms: one based on ant colony optimization, and the other based on a genetic algorithm strategy. Our experimental results show that the PLCMST outperforms the other two approaches, particularly when …

A Wheeled Mobile Robot Path-Tracking System Based On Image Processing And Adaptive Cmac, Jih-Gau Juang, Ko-Jui Hsu, Chih-Min Lin
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
This study entailed applying image-processing techniques and an intelligent control method to a wheeled mobile robot (WMR) for real-time trajectory recognition and tracking. The WMR was fitted with a charge-coupled device (CCD) camera to capture images of the environment, and the hue-saturationintensity color space was used to classify the color features of the captured images. The WMR calculates the relative position of a target object by using image-processing and edgedetection algorithms. This paper proposes a cerebellar model articulation controller (CMAC) and adaptive CMAC to replace conventional proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controller for guiding the WMR to track a desired path. Moreover, using …
