Numerous devices have been developed for controlling valve timings in SI engines. Among them, the electromagnetic valve train (EMV) actuator can fully control valve timings to improve fuel consumption and emission. In addition, an EMV with a permanent-magnet and electromagnetic-coil (PM/EM) hybrid actuator has several advantages of control, energy consumption, and time response compared over conventional EMVs. This paper proposes a novel EMV with a PM/EM hybrid actuator that differs considerably from existing EMVs. Finite element analysis was used for analyzing the EMV design. An optimal design for a polyurethane (PU) aortic valve was developed in a previous study. The current study investigated an approach for manufacturing PU aortic valves, evaluating the effective orifice areas (EOAs) of the prototypes. Two manufacturing approaches, assembly and single-piece forming methods, were developed. In the assembly method, support frames and valve leaflets were manufactured separately and then glued together by using an adhesive substance. By contrast, in the single-piece forming method, two main components of the valve were fabricated simultaneously by using a molding technique. The gyroless attitude control method and kalman algorithm procedures presented in this paper are applicable to asymmetrical microsatellites of any shape with large mass variation and without angular rate sensors. The attitude sensors include a three-axis magnetometer, a horizon sensor, and a coarse sun sensor (CSS), which together serve as an analytic platform and help in ensuring the stability of attitude controls. This paper presents an intelligent solar panel cleaning system that utilizes a fuzzy logic controller. The output voltage of the solar panel is applied to calculate whether to activate the cleaning mechanism. The direction and position of the system is set using a light sensor that is parallel to the direction of the sunlight. The data from the light sensors, combined with fuzzy logic control software developed using LabVIEW, determine the control commands (stop, forward, and reverse) for the stepper motors controlling the cleaning process. This paper presents physical models for simulating unsteady fish motions, including bursting, gliding, braking, turning, ascending and descending. A new wave model, the controllable body wave model, is developed to undulate the fish body to produce bursting and gliding motions. A key frame approach is adopted to realize braking, turning, descending and ascending. In the key frame method, individual motions are decomposed into sequences of key steps. The gestures of the fish in these key steps are recorded and regarded as key frames. In the run time, these recorded key frames are sequentially reproduced to generate swimming patterns. This study proposes a systematic approach for the design and control of a novel ball screw transmission system. We investigated the structure of the system, performed kinematic analysis, and conducted dimensional synthesis by optimization. The mathematical model of the system was determined by system identification and a refined PID controller was designed. Computer simulation was conducted to verify the feasibility of the proposed design. A prototype machine and an experimental setup were built and tested. Since its invention in 2004, Graphene, a two dimensional array of SP2 bonded carbon atoms has received significant interest by the scientific community due to its unique electrical, optical and mechanical properties. A promising route to the synthesis of large-area graphene, is epitaxial graphene formed by sublimation of silicon atoms from Silicon carbide at elevated temperatures (>1200oC). As computer data rates have increased, designers observed that the standard models for estimating the impact of copper foil surface roughness on conductor loss are limited to a few GHz. The more recent snowball model (a “snowball” estimation of the Huray Model) has demonstrated improved conductor loss predictions up to 50 GHz by estimating the necessary parameters using reasonable assumptions about the geometric surface features of electrodeposited copper foil. Based upon a framework of time-frequency analysis, we outline condition based maintenance (CBM), or maintenance only upon evidence of need, for both electrical and mechanical systems. We apply novel time-frequency cross-correlation metrics to helicopter drivetrain systems and electrical cables as remaining useful life assessments by non-destructive and non-invasive tests. In both cases, these metrics for health assessment provide a basis for diagnostic and prognostic analysis of underlying systems and components by performing accelerated condition tests on actual mechanical and electrical systems. The results of falls can be disastrous, create a long road to recovery, and in many cases result in death. This dissertation proposes a time-frequency distribution (TFD) based new method to redefine the power quality (PQ) indices for the assessment of PQ disturbances typically present in electric power systems. The redefined PQ indices are applied to various types of synthetic and real-world PQ disturbances in order to verify the efficacy and applicability of the proposed method. The case studies show that the proposed method provides actual results with respect to the existing TFD-based transient PQ indices, and provides much more accurate results than the traditional fast Fourier transform (FFT) based PQ indices under stationary and nonstationary PQ disturbances. Recently, coordinated control and estimation problems have attracted a great deal of attention in different fields especially in biology, physics, computer science, and control engineering. Coordinated control and estimation problems have prominent characteristics of distributed control, local interaction, and self-organization. Research on multiagent coordinated control and estimation problems not only helps better understand the mechanisms of natural collective phenomena but also benefits the applications of cyberphysical systems.

In a distributed 'networked control system' (NCS), multiple physical systems or agents are connected to their corresponding controllers through a shared packet-switched communication network. For such distributed NCS, periodic sampled controller design is unsuitable to handle packet-switched closed-loop control systems, and a novel stochastic optimal adaptive event-sampled controller scheme is proposed in the application layer for each physical system or agent expressed as an uncertain linear dynamic system. Lyapunov stability analysis will be utilized to derive the event trigger condition. In addition, a network scheduling protocol is also required for such NCS. Effective nanopulse generators have become critical in recent decades concerning the study of subcellular affects in response to nanosecond pulsed electric fields. It has been observed that nanosecond duration electric pulses can target intracellular organelles, ultimately leading to cell apoptosis, suggesting the possibility of a new, minimally invasive, low risk cancer therapy methodology. The standard topology for developing a medical nanopulser is the Blumlein “transmission line” approach. We present a Y-branch power splitter design with a multimode section using GaN on Sapphire at telecommunication wavelength. The GaN sample optical properties were also investigated, resulting in a refractive index for the GaN layers nTE=2.289±0.001 and nTM=2.324±0.00. Optimization of the structure parameters for this structure was conducted accurately using BPM methods. The results demonstrated the possibility of realizing a GaN-based Y-branch power splitter for various applications.

In this paper, a novel Ultra-Wide Band (UWB) notch patch antenna with co-planar waveguide (CPW) fed is presented. This antenna only used one layer and the patch antenna is constructed on the first layer and back to back with CPW fed and bottom part is ground plane. The width notch is used to achieve the UWB characteristic. The results shown that the impedance bandwidth is 1130 MHz (1.662–2.792 GHz) or about 50.7% for VSWR <2.

Among the phenomena that occur as a result of contact between two surfaces is friction sound, in which surface roughness is of great importance. In this study, the parameter of contact stiffness is used to explain the frequency characteristic of vibration generated by the rubbing of flat surfaces under a small load. A 3-disk configuration rubbing method was used, which provides a unique characteristic of the system's frequency response function containing specific information about the rubbing vibrations. A multi-functional compound-eye endoscope enabling multi-spectral imaging and variable field-of-view is presented, which is based on a compact compound-eye camera called TOMBO (thin observation module by bound optics). Narrow-band filters attached to some lenses provide snap-shot multi-band images. Fixed and movable mirrors are introduced to control the field of view, which realizes several observation modes such as three-dimensional shape measurement, wide field-of-view, and close-up observation.

The effect of the sputtering parameters on the mechanical tribology properties of Titanium Aluminum Nitride coating on the tungsten cabide insert tool in the dry turning of tool steel has been investigated. The coating was deposited using a Direct Current magnetron sputtering system with various substrate biases (-79 to -221 V) and nitrogen flow rates (30 to 72 sccm). The dry turning test was carried out on a Computer Numeric Code machine using an optimum cutting parameter setting. Total hip replacement (THR) is one of the most successful orthopedic surgical procedures for replacing a broken hip joint. In THR, wear may occur at the articulating surface of the acetabular cup and the femoral head. In Indonesia, the country with the largest Muslim population in the world, most of the inhabitants do salat (praying) every day. THR users are banned from doing salat for fear it will damage the hip joint prostheses. Efficient and continuous production of fullerenes, single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs), and carbon nano-particles has been developed by the JxB arc jet method, where the Lorentz force of magnetic field jets out gaseous carbon particles to the JxB direction. In order to realize continuous mass production of these carbon clusters, the revolverinjection- type arc jet producer (RIT-AJP) has been developed. Production of fullerenes, endohedral metallo-fullerenes, SWNTs, metal-encapsulated carbon nano particles has been examined.

Analytical models for wooden-doweled joints need to be developed. The objective of this research is to determine whether the strength of wooden-doweled joints can be well predicted by equations developed for steel-doweled joints. In this experiment, various connection parameters, such as dowel diameter, species of the wooden dowel, and angle of joints, are studied. The joint specimens are loaded in a quasi-static state with four replications each. Currently, there is no definitive and uniform description for the similarity of time series, which results in difficulties for relevant research on this topic. In this paper, we propose a generalized framework to measure the similarity of time series. In this generalized framework, whether the time series is univariable or multivariable, and linear transformed or nonlinear transformed, the similarity of time series is uniformly defined using norms of vectors or matrices.The definitions of the similarity of time series in the original space and the transformed space are proved to be equivalent.
