Simulations Of Pulse Signals With X-Parameters, Nick K.H. Huang, Lijun Jiang Dec 2011

Simulations Of Pulse Signals With X-Parameters, Nick K.H. Huang, Lijun Jiang

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Nonlinearity is becoming increasingly important to IC technologies. From the PHD formalism, X-parameter models provide an accurate frequency-domain method under large-signal operating points to characterize their nonlinear behaviors. In this work, X-parameter models are investigated to handle time-domain pulse signals which is critical to IC signal integrity but was not studied before. Two representative circuits, an analog LNA and a digital CMOS buffer, were employed to characterize the X-parameter performance. The results obtained in this paper provide the first hand data for pulse signal responses of X-parameters in signal integrity modelings. © 2011 IEEE.

Eigenvalue Distributions Of Mimo Rayleigh-Product Channels With Arbitrary-Power Co-Channel Interference And Noise, Yongpeng Wu, Shi Jin, Xiqi Gao, Chengshan Xiao, Matthew R. Mckay

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper studies the eigenvalue distributions of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) Rayleigh-product channels in the presence of both co-channel interference and thermal noise. We first present exact expressions for the marginal ordered eigenvalue distributions of the channel Gram matrix when multichannel beamforming is employed, from which we obtain exact results of the outage probability on each eigenmode. Our results apply to a wide class of multichannel systems which transmit on the eigenmodes of the MIMO channel, allowing for transmission on any numbers of eigen subchannels, with any numbers of antennas, any numbers of scatterers in the environment, and any numbers of …

A Comparison And Evaluation Of Three Different Pose Estimation Algorithms In Detecting Low Texture Manufactured Objects, Robert Kriener Dec 2011

A Comparison And Evaluation Of Three Different Pose Estimation Algorithms In Detecting Low Texture Manufactured Objects, Robert Kriener

All Theses

This thesis examines the problem of pose estimation, which is the problem of determining the pose of an object in some coordinate system. Pose refers to the object's position and orientation in the coordinate system. In particular, this thesis examines pose estimation techniques using either monocular or binocular vision systems.
Generally, when trying to find the pose of an object the objective is to generate a set of matching features, which may be points or lines, between a model of the object and the current image of the object. These matches can then be used to determine the pose of …

Localization Of Objects Using Cross-Correlation Of Shadow Fading Noise And Copulas, Mohammed Rana Basheer, Sarangapani Jagannathan Dec 2011

Localization Of Objects Using Cross-Correlation Of Shadow Fading Noise And Copulas, Mohammed Rana Basheer, Sarangapani Jagannathan

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

While fading, in general, is detrimental to accurately localizing a target, fading correlation between adjacent receivers may be exploited to improve localization accuracy. Therefore, this paper presents a novel wireless localization scheme that employs a combination of cross-correlation between shadow fading noise and copula technique to recursively estimate the location of a transmitter. a stochastic filter that models multipath fading as an Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process followed by a Generalized Auto Regressive Conditional Heteroskedasticity (GARCH) filtering is proposed to extract shadow fading residuals from measured RSSI values. Subsequently, Student-t Copula function is used to create the log likelihood function, which acts as …

Digitally Controlled, Modular Electronic Load, Jason L. March Dec 2011

Digitally Controlled, Modular Electronic Load, Jason L. March

Master's Theses

This project entails the design and development of a digitally controlled, modular electronic load. The proposed load is unique from existing designs because it has the added ability to increase its maximum current level by adding identical modules in parallel. Each module is designed to sink a maximum of 5A at 60V but more modules allow for more current. The cost and simplicity of the design are considered such that it can be reproduced in-house to replace, whenever possible, the resistor box for load testing of any analog circuits but more specifically power electronic circuits.

The design process as well …

Closed-Loop Attitude Control Using Fluid Dynamic Vectoring On An Aerospike Nozzle, Nathan Erni Dec 2011

Closed-Loop Attitude Control Using Fluid Dynamic Vectoring On An Aerospike Nozzle, Nathan Erni

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

Attitude control of a prototype satellite bus using fluid mechanical vectoring on an aerospike nozzle is demonstrated. The design achieves thrust vectoring by injecting propellant asymmetrically into the unconstrained aerospike exhaust plume near the nozzle base. The prototype system uses cold-gas thrusters to both spin-up and de-tumble the test article. The system is configured with axially directed annular flows that produce large longitudinal thrusts and smaller secondary lateral-injection flows for side thrusts. Both open and closed-loop attitude control, with and without main aerospike annular flow active, are demonstrated. Proportional, integral, derivative (PID) regulation is used for closed-loop attitude control. When …

Nanoparticle Necklace Network Arrays Exhibiting Room Temperature Single-Electron Switching, Jennifer L. Kane Dec 2011

Nanoparticle Necklace Network Arrays Exhibiting Room Temperature Single-Electron Switching, Jennifer L. Kane

Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

A single nanoparticle is one of the most sensitive electronic devices for sensing chemicals in a gas or liquid. The conductivity of a single Au nanoparticle is significantly modulated by the binding of a molecule that alters charge by just one electron. However, the single-electron sensitivity requires cryogenic temperatures and interconnection is not easy. A patterned two-dimensional network of one-dimensional nanoparticle necklaces made up of 10 nm Au particles are fabricated and shown to exhibit similar single-electron effect at room temperature. Furthermore, the long range conductivity of over 10’s of microns makes the structure easy to self-assemble onto conventional microelectronics …

Optimized Built-In Self-Test Technique For Caen-Based Nanofabric Systems, Sambhav Kundaikar, Maciej Zawodniok

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

We propose a built-in self-test (BIST) technique for testing and diagnosis of molecular electronic based nano fabrics. the nano fabric architectures are reconfigurable in nature thus making it possible to utilize general methods similar to those employed for testing of FPGAs. However, a high defect rate in nano fabrics renders the traditional techniques ill-suited. Moreover, the nano blocks offer potential for using a partially damaged nano block due to inherent redundancy of the architecture. This paper presents the design and analysis of testing configurations and optimization scheme that minimizes testing time while improving the utilization of the nano fabric. the …

Contingency Constrained Economic Dispatch In Smart Grids With Correlated Demands, Yiyu Shi, Jinjun Xiong Dec 2011

Contingency Constrained Economic Dispatch In Smart Grids With Correlated Demands, Yiyu Shi, Jinjun Xiong

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Contingency constrained economic dispatch has been an extensively studied research topic. However, most existing works assume that the load demands at all buses are given. Such an assumption works well for conventional power grids, where the load demands are relatively easy to predict. We can select a few representative demand profiles and perform economic dispatch over them. However, such a practice will no longer work in smart grids, where the load demands fluctuate dramatically. We will need a huge number of demand profiles to cover all possible scenarios, which is computationally expensive. to address the problem, we propose a parameterized …

Soft-Decision Feedback Turbo Equalization For Multilevel Modulations, Huang Lou, Chengshan Xiao

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Error propagation phenomena is the major drawback for existing hard-decision feedback turbo equalizers. in this paper, we propose a new soft-decision feedback equalizer (SDFE) suitable for multilevel modulation systems employing turbo equalization. the proposed SDFE offers a low computational complexity growing only linearly with the number of equalizer coefficients, as opposed to the quadratic complexity of MMSE-Based linear turbo equalizer with time-varying coefficients (Exact-MMSE-LE). the performance and convergence property of the proposed SDFE are analyzed using extrinsic information transfer (EXIT) chart and verified by simulations in a severe InterSymbol interference channel set by Proakis. Results show that our approach performs …

Nonuniform random sampling is applied to a wideband 3D synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imaging system to reduce the number of measurement points in both frequency and space domains. Experimental tests were performed on a construction foam specimen using uniformly sampled Q-band frequencies in 35.04 GHz to 44.96 GHz and at a grid of two-millimeter step sizes. using discrete Fourier transform (DFT) or discrete cosine transform (DCT) sparse representations, the 3D images can be reconstructed from 7% random samples of the experimental data achieving comparable quality as the one from original full-set data. This can translate to significant time reduction of …

Linear Precoding For Mimo Multiple Access Channels With Discrete-Constellation Inputs, Mingxi Wang, Weiliang Zeng, Chengshan Xiao Dec 2011

Linear Precoding For Mimo Multiple Access Channels With Discrete-Constellation Inputs, Mingxi Wang, Weiliang Zeng, Chengshan Xiao

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this paper, we study linear precoding for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) multiple access channels (MAC) with discrete-constellation inputs. We derive the constellation-constrained capacity region for the MIMO MAC with an arbitrary number of users. Due to the non-concavity of the objective function, we obtain the necessary conditions for the weighted sum rate (WSR) maximization problem through Karush-Kuhn-Tucker (KKT) analysis. to find the optimal precoding matrices, we propose an iterative algorithm utilizing alternating optimization strategy and gradient descent update. Numerical results show that when inputs are digital modulated signals and the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is in the medium range, our proposed …

Mahalanobis-Taguchi System As A Multi-Sensor Based Decision Making Prognostics Tool For Centrifugal Pump Failures, Ahmet Soylemezoglu, Sarangapani Jagannathan, Can Saygin

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A novel Mahalanobis Taguchi System (MTS) based fault detection, isolation, and prognostics scheme is presented. the proposed scheme fuses data from multiple sensors into a single system level performance metric using Mahalanobis Distance (MD) and generates fault clusters based on MD values. MD thresholds derived from the clustering analysis are used for fault detection and isolation. When a fault is detected, the prognostics scheme, which monitors the progression of the MD values over time, is initiated. Then, using a linear approximation, time to failure is estimated. the performance of the scheme has been validated via experiments performed on a mono-block …

Impact Of Spatial Correlation Of Fading Channels On The Performance Of Mimo Underwater Communication Systems, Jesse Cross, Jian Zhang, Yahong Rosa Zheng Dec 2011

Impact Of Spatial Correlation Of Fading Channels On The Performance Of Mimo Underwater Communication Systems, Jesse Cross, Jian Zhang, Yahong Rosa Zheng

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The spatial and intertap correlation matrices of fading channels are first estimated for underwater multiple input multiple output (MIMO) systems using real experimental data. We confirm that underwater MIMO channels exhibit strong spatial and temporal correlation. the bit error rate (BER) performance of the MIMO system at different correlation scenarios are also evaluated with computer simulation. at BER=0.01%, the required SNR of highly correlated channel is 5 dB higher than the i.i.d. channel. BER results of the experimental data also quantitatively show the performance degradation caused by the correlation. © 2011 IEEE.

Work In Progress - Virtual Facilitation And Procedural Knowledge Education, Ray Luechtefeld, Steve Eugene Watkins Dec 2011

Work In Progress - Virtual Facilitation And Procedural Knowledge Education, Ray Luechtefeld, Steve Eugene Watkins

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Engineering students acquire both conceptual and procedural knowledge as part of their education. While conceptual knowledge, such as understanding why certain design practices are required or having knowledge of the general principles of engineering development, is essential, procedural knowledge to enact specific engineering practices is also needed. This kind of knowledge, such as balancing chemical equations, solving calculus problems, or finding Thevenin-Norton equivalents, is usually taught through rote problem solving, sometimes with the guidance of teaching assistants or aid from the instructor if students find themselves "stuck". However, a Virtual Facilitator, designed to help students develop team skills, can also …

On The Linear Precoder Design For Mimo Channels With Finite-Alphabet Inputs And Statistical Csi, Weiliang Zeng, Chengshan Xiao, Mingxi Wang, Jianhua Lu

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper investigates the linear precoder design that maximizes the average mutual information of multiple-input multiple-output channels with finite-alphabet inputs and statistical channel state information known at the transmitter. This linear precoder design is an important open problem and is extremely difficult to solve: First, average mutual information lacks closed-form expression and involves complicated computations; Second, the optimization problem over precoder is nonconcave. This study explores the solution to this problem and provides the following contributions: 1) a closed-form lower bound of average mutual information is derived. It achieves asymptotic optimality at low and high signal-to-noise ratio regions and, with …

Childhood obesity is becoming a growing problem in the United States. According to the CDC, childhood obesity has more than tripled in the past 30 years [7]. It can lead to health problems previously reserved for adults, such as diabetes, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol. For the team WiiHopp project, we plan to turn a JumpSport mini-trampoline into a controller for the Nintendo Wii console. The hope is to help turn the problem of video games and the laziness surrounding them into an active solution to combat the problem of childhood obesity.

Our goal is to produce an add-on …

An Inertial Measurement System For Hand And Finger Tracking, Edward Nelson Henderson Dec 2011

An Inertial Measurement System For Hand And Finger Tracking, Edward Nelson Henderson

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

The primary Human Computer Interfaces (HCI) today are the keyboard and mouse. These interfaces do not facilitate a fluid flow of thought and intent from the operator to the computer. A computer mouse provides only 2 Degrees of Freedom (2DOF). Touch interfaces also provide 2DOF, but with multiple points, making the touch interface far more expressive. The hand has 6 Degrees of Freedom (6DOF)by itself. Combined with the motion of the fingers, the hand has the potential to represent a vast array of differing gestures. Hand gestures must be captured before they can be used as a HCI. Fortunately, advances …

Comparison Of A Recurrent Neural Network Pv System Model With A Traditional Component-Based Pv System Model, Daniel M. Riley, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Photovoltaic (PV) system modeling is used throughout the photovoltaic industry for the prediction of PV system output under a given set of weather conditions. PV system modeling has a wide range of uses including pre-purchase comparisons of PV system components, system health monitoring, and estimation of payback (return on investment) times. in order to adequately model a PV system, the system must be characterized to establish the relationship between given weather inputs (e.g., irradiance, spectrum, temperature) and desired system outputs (e.g., AC power, module temperature). Traditional approaches to system characterization involve characterizing and modeling each component in a PV system …

Fabrication Of Composite Nanomaterials For Thin Film Amorphous Silicon Solar Cells, Benjamin Seth Newton Dec 2011

Fabrication Of Composite Nanomaterials For Thin Film Amorphous Silicon Solar Cells, Benjamin Seth Newton

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

A material with the precise combination of amorphous silicon and polycrystalline silicon would be able to take advantage of the high absorption capabilities of amorphous silicon and the electron transport capabilities of polycrystalline silicon. Polycrystalline nanostructures in the form of wires can also take advantage of other properties of light absorption, trapping and scattering inherent in nanowire structures. These properties of high absorption and electron transport in one device would lead to advances in the search for highly efficient low cost solar cells and sensors. In this work a thin film material composed of an array of polycrystalline silicon nanostructures …

Using A Micro-Integrator To Eliminate The Numerical Butterfly Effect In Non-Linear Chaotic Partial Differential Equations, Joshua Jemegbe

Electrical Engineering Theses

Chaos theory is a relatively new scientific paradigm for the analysis, simulation and prediction of non-linear phenomena whose initial conditions determine the behavior of their entire time series representation. It finds many applications in mathematics, science, and engineering. These include, but are not limited, to data encryption and decryption, designing secure communication systems, predicting weather patterns, noise fluctuations on data lines, understanding turbulence in fluid flow, and analyzing quantum wells. Systems that exhibit chaos are called chaotic systems. In computing solutions to nonlinear chaotic partial differential equation sets, slight deviations in step size could lead to completely diverging trajectories as …

Compressive Sensing For Speech Signals In Mobile Systems, Sabir Ahmed Dec 2011

Compressive Sensing For Speech Signals In Mobile Systems, Sabir Ahmed

Electrical Engineering Theses

Compressive sensing is an emerging and revolutionary technology that strongly relies on the sparsity of the signal. In compressive sensing the signal is sparsely compressively sampled by taking a small number of random projections of the signal, which contain most of the salient information. Compressive sensing has been previously applied in areas like: image processing, radar systems and sonar systems. This research work will discuss the potential implementation of compressive sensing in mobile communication systems and how it will influence their data rates. In a typical mobile communication system, the signal of interest is sampled at least at the Nyquist …
