Photonic bandgap (PBG) regions have been calculated for periodically grooved Si structures, acting as a one-dimensional photonic crystal. The wavelength range of the PBG as a function of the ratio (DSi/A) is presented, where DSi is the width of the Si walls and A is the grooved silicon lattice constant. The influence of the parameter DSi, the refractive index of the space between the Si walls and the number of structure periods, m, on the forming of PBG regions is discussed. A hybrid inverted-L antenna (HIL) has been shown to reduce the physical height of a square planar monopole antenna, while retaining a relatively wide impedance bandwidth and good radiation pattern characteristics. The introduction of horizontal slots in the vertical edges of the antenna cause the surface current to meander, resulting in a decrease in the lower edge frequency of the impedance bandwidth. The impact of different sizes and arrangements of slots on impedance and radiation pattern bandwidth, gain and surface current distribution is simulated using transmission line modelling (TLM). This paper demonstrates the use of Prior Subspace Analysis (PSA) as a method for transcribing drums in the presence of pitched instruments. PSA uses prior subspaces that represent the sources to be transcribed to overcome some of the problems associated with other subspace methods such as Independent Subspace Analysis (ISA) or sub-band ISA. The use of prior knowledge results in improved robustness for transcription purposes and enables the method to work more readily in the presence of pitched instruments than other subspace methods. While the classical attack of ``monitor the network and intercept the password'' can be avoided by advanced protocols like SSH, one-time passwords are still considered a viable alternative or a supplement for software authentication since they are the only ones that safeguard against attacks on insecure client machines. In this paper by using public-key techniques we present a method called signature chain alternative to Lamport's hash chain to improve security and flexibility of one-time passwords. Students learn more if they are actively involved in the learning process, particularly in a cooperative manner. Several UMR faculty have operated course-based learning centers (LCs) as part of the campus-wide Learning Enhancement Across Disciplines (LEAD) Program of student learning assistance and enhancement. LCs are designed to assist large numbers of students in a cost- and time-efficient manner that promotes student engagement without requiring undue amounts of faculty time. The main objective of this study is to propose new approaches for on-line tuning of the linear sliding surface slope in sliding mode controllers. The new approaches are developed for a class of second order systems on new coordinate axes, one of which is the classical sliding surface and the other one is naturally chosen to be orthogonal to it. The control input of the sliding mode control law is then modified accordingly by applying the Lyapunov stability condition. In this paper, a new approach to demagnetization process of a PWM forward converter (FC) is proposed. According to this approach, the demagnetization winding and diode of a conventional FC are removed, and an external capacitor is added in parallel with the secondary diode. This replacement changes the linear demagnetization process of a conventional FC into a resonant demagnetization process. The theoretical performance results of the proposed resonant demagnetization forward converter (RDFC) are compared with those of a conventional FC. This paper deals with the nature of seed electron sources in compressed N_2 for positive polarity. We present an experimental procedure that provides evidence of the fact that collisional detachment from negative ions plays the most important role in the supply of seed electrons. Conditioning phenomena in compressed SF_6, N_2 and air have been simulated under positive lightning impulses for point-plane geometry.

We present an analytical model for calculating upper and lower bounds for call-blocking probabilities in a LEO satellite network that carries voice calls. The method is especially useful for large systems where calculation of call-blocking probabilities are too expensive. Our method calculates upper and lower bounds very easily and produces fairly accurate results.

The aim of this paper is to develop a new approach for a solution of the continuous-time model matching problem by a static state feedback in the sense of \mathcal{H}_\infty optimality criterion by using Linear Matrix Inequalities (LMIs). The main contribution could briefly be described as to reformulate the model matching problem in LMI formulation, to present the solvability conditions and to give a design procedure for the one degree of freedom static state feedback control law. Finally, the results are applied to an example system.

Minimum shift keying (MSK) modulation has features such as constant envelope, compact spectrum and good error performance, which are all desirable in many digital applications including mobile radio. Numerous receiver structures to demodulate MSK have been suggested, such as correlation receivers, differential detectors and frequency discriminators. MSK is a form of biphase keying and can be detected by a zero-crossing based phase demodulator which gives near optimum performance. In passive coherent locators (PCL) systems, noise and the precision of direction of arrival (DOA) estimation are key issues. This paper addresses the implementation of high-resolution DOA estimation methods, in particular the multiple signal classification (MUSIC) algorithm, the conventional beam forming (CBF) algorithm, and the algebraic constant modulus algorithm (ACMA). The goal is to compare the ACMA to the MUSIC and CBF algorithms for application to PCL. An adaptive observer estimating all parameters and load torque is proposed for DC servo motors. The observer uses no direct feedback but the adaptation schemes use current and speed measurements. Both the observer and adaptations are simple to implement for real-time applications. Simulation results are satisfactory for the full adaptive observer. If the observer works in parallel with only load torque and armature resistance adaptations, the results are very good even if very low-quality sensors are used. Transversal electromagnetic mode cells (TEM-cells) are used for electromagnetic compatibility measurements (emission and immunity), and for biomedical applications. Over the years, higher and higher frequencies are being used, which demands smaller transmission structures in order to obtain the homogeneous field distribution due to resonance. Such resonance destroys the TEM field, introducing higher order modes. A digitally controlled drive system was implemented in this study to control the speed and direction of a travelling-wave ultrasonic motor. The drive system, based on a 2-phase voltage-fed high-frequency serial-resonant inverter, uses the mechanical resonant frequency of an ultrasonic motor. A TMS320F243 digital signal processor was used to control an ultrasonic motor drive system. The speed control of the ultrasonic motor was achieved with a driving frequency in the 41.3-43.3 kHz frequency range. The adequacy and robustness of the simulator will be demonstrated by showing some important applications relevant to operation, operational planning and medium-term planing. This paper presents a performance comparison (the focus of numerical simulation) of traditional simulation (TCS,TSE) with an optimal step time simulator (SOST) for large HVdc systems.In SOST, a Detailed simulation of HVdc converter behavior has been modified to include the automatic selection of optimal integration steps, frequency-dependent effects of an ac system, ac system phase and magnitude dynamics of voltage (particularly weak ac systems), control assessment and temporary over-voltage consequences. SOST, via graphical interfaces,provides fast and accurate information of electromechanical and the electromagnetic-transients behavior of a large HVdc/HVac system.

We report our results in classifying protein matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionizationtime of flight mass spectra obtained from serum samples into diseased and healthy groups. We discuss in detail five of the steps in preprocessing the mass spectral data for biomarker discovery, as well as our criterion for choosing a small set of peaks for classifying the samples. Cross-validation studies with four selected proteins yielded misclassification rates in the 10-15% range for all the classification methods. Three of these proteins or protein fragments are down-regulated and one up-regulated in lung cancer, the disease under consideration in this data set. When cross-validation studies …

This article describes an approach to bridge improvements that uses smart structures, introduces key technologies for health monitoring systems based on fiber optics and gives an overview of two instrumented bridges. A sensing system in one application monitors general performance and health of the structure, while the system in a second application interrogates the behavior of a major structural repair.

Numerical simulations were used to investigate the disturbance introduced by placing a small magnetic loop probe in the near field of a driven loop. In the absence of the loop probe, the numerical simulations were compared with an approximate closed-form analytical expression for the magnetic field produced by the driven loop. The agreement between the approximate analytical results and the simulation was good. The next set of simulations was based on a physical model that included the probe and showed that the probe does exert an effect on the field being measured. Recently, a Clarke's model-based simulator was proposed for Rayleigh fading channels. However, that model, as shown in this paper, may encounter statistic deficiency. Therefore, an improved model is presented to remove the statistic deficiency. Furthermore, a new simulation model is proposed for Rician fading channels. This Rician fading simulator with finite number of sinusoids plus a zero-mean stochastic sinusoid as the specular (line-of-sight) component is different from all the existing Rician fading simulators, which have non-zero mean deterministic specular component. A novel nonlinear optimal neurocontroller for a static compensator (STATCOM) connected to a power system using artificial neural networks is presented in this paper. The heuristic dynamic programming (HDP), a member of the adaptive critic designs (ACDs) family, is used for the design of the STATCOM neurocontroller. This neurocontroller provides nonlinear optimal control with better performance compared to the conventional PI controllers.

The performance of typical low-pass capacitor filters is limited by the mutual inductance between the input and output sides of the filter. This paper describes how two appropriately spaced capacitors can be used to construct a low-pass filter with significantly better high-frequency performance than a one-capacitor filter. Laboratory measurements and numerical simulations are used to quantify the mutual inductance and compare the performance of one- and two-capacitor low-pass filters.

A method for an adequate visualization of a microwave intense noise envelope in a wide frequency range (several octaves), measuring of its power parameters, and detection of a narrowband signal with unknown frequency and power against the noise background is presented. This method is based on an application of a nonheterodyne principle of microwave frequency (and power) conversion using a gyromagnetic converter, which operates in two regimes in turn: the resonance detection and the cross-multiplication. A block-scheme and an operation of a two-channel measuring device combining the mentioned functions are discussed.

A new type of multi-level inverter is introduced which is created by cascading two three-phase three-level inverters using the load connection. This new inverter can operate as a nine-level inverter and naturally splits the power conversion into a higher voltage lower-frequency inverter and a lower-voltage higher frequency inverter. This type of system presents particular advantages to naval ship propulsion systems which rely on high power quality, survivable drives. New control methods are described involving both joint and separate control of the individual three-level inverters. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of both controls. In this paper, new sum-of-sinusoids statistical simulation models are proposed for Rayleigh fading channels. These new models employ random path gain, random initial phase, and conditional random Doppler frequency for all individual sinusoids. It is shown that the autocorrelations and cross correlations of the quadrature components, and the autocorrelation of the complex envelope of the new simulators match the desired ones exactly, even if the number of sinusoids is as small as a single-digit integer. This paper presents a new voltage balancing control for the diode-clamped multilevel rectifier/inverter system. A complete analysis of the voltage balance theory for a 5-level back-to-back system is given. The analysis is based on fundamental frequency switching control and then extended to pulse-width modulation. The method involves obtaining optimal switching angles; a process which is described in detail in this paper. The proposed control strategy regulates the DC bus voltage, balances the capacitors, and decreases the harmonic components of the voltage and current. Simulation and experimental results demonstrate the validity of the optimizing method and control theory.

Power system stabilizers (PSS) are used to generate supplementary control signals for the excitation system in order to damp the low frequency power system oscillations. To overcome the drawbacks of conventional PSS (CPSS), numerous techniques have been proposed in the literature. Based on the analysis of existing techniques, this paper presents an indirect adaptive neural network based power system stabilizer (IDNC) design.
