We present an implicit approach to solve problems arising in decomposition of incompletely specified multi-valued functions and relations. We introduce a new representation based on binaryencoded multi-valued decision diagrams (BEMDDs). This representation shares desirable properties of MDDs, in particular, compactness, and is applicable to weakly-specified relations with a large number of output values. This makes our decomposition approach particularly useful for data mining and machine learning. Using BEMDDs to represent multi-valued relations we have developed two complementary input support minimization algorithms. The SMC3 motor drive has been built using an Analog Devices ADSP-2101 digital signal processor (DSP). The SMC3 is designed to work with two-phase step motors, which are permanent magnet motors with many (typically 100) poles. The firmware in the SMC3 DSP drives the step motor phase windings using field-oriented control rather than using single steps. This method derives the maximum theoretical performance from the motor. This paper describes field-oriented control, and how the SMC3 hardware and firmware implements it.

Shannon's separation theorem states that for transmission over noisy channels, approaching channel capacity is possible with the separation of source and channel coding. Practically, the situation is different. Infinite size blocks are needed to achieve this theoretical limit. Also, time-varying channels require a different approach. This leads to many approaches for source and channel coding. This dissertation will address a joint source and channel coding that suits Automatic Repeat Request (ARQ) application and applies it to packet switching networks. The main objective of this thesis is to show that saturation routing, often in the past considered inefficient, can in fact be a viable approach to use in many important applications and services over an Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) network. For other applications and services, a hybrid approach (one that partially uses saturation routing) is presented. First, the minimum effects of saturation routing are demonstrated by showing that the ratio, defined as f, of routing overhead cells over information cells is small even for large networks. Next-generation wireless networks have been designed to transport integrated multimedia services based on a cellular extension of a packet-switched architecture using variants of the Internet protocol (IP). Each call, arriving to or active within the network, carries demand for one or more services in parallel, where each service type has a guaranteed quality of service (QoS). Characterization And Electrochemical Investigation Of Boron-Doped Mesocarbon Microbeads Anode Materials For Lithium-Ion Battery, Mao-Hui Chen, Guo-Tao Wu, Guang-Ming Zhu, Jin-Kua You, Zu-Geng Lin

The anodic performances of boron doped and undoped mesocarbon microbeads(MCMBs) were comparatively studied and the structures were characterized by XPS, SEM, XRD and electrochemical measurements. It was found that boron doping samples greatly increased the degree of graphitization and the crystallite size, leading to quite different morphology. Electrochemical discharge/charge cycle tests indicate that lithium intercalation occurred at a little higher potential for the boron doped MCMBs, being attended by greater irreversible capacity loss.

The periodic,aperiodic, chaotic and mixed-mode oscillations can occur in the process of the anodic electrodissolution of carbon steel in the solution of dilute phosphoric acid. More plentiful dynamic behaviors can be found in this system compared with the system of Fe/H3PO4/Pt.

Multipacting is one of the major loss mechanisms in rf superconductivity cavities for accelerators. This loss mechanism limits the maximum amount of energy/power supported by the cavities. Optimal designs have been identified in others’ studies. In practice, these designs are not easily manufactured. Chemical etching processes used to polish the cavity walls result in a nonuniform surface etch compromising the optimal geometrical design. Past multipacting studies have not examined the impact of wall perturbations.

In this letter, we report on a material deposition scheme for quaternary AlxInyGa1−x–yN layers using a pulsed atomic layer epitaxy (PALE) technique. The PALE approach allows accurate control of the quaternary layer composition and thickness by simply changing the number of aluminum,indium, and gallium pulses in a unit cell and the number of unit cell repeats. Using PALE, AlInGaN layers with Al mole fractions in excess of 40% and strong room-temperature photoluminescence peaks at 280 nm can easily be grown even at temperatures lower than 800 °C.

This paper presents the research and development of a hybrid rapid manufacturing process being developed at the University of Missouri--Rolla. This process includes a laser deposition and a 5- axis CNC milling system. By combining laser deposition and machining processes, the resulting hybrid process can provide greater build capability and better accuracy and surface finish. This paper gives a brief description of the laser aided manufacturing process. Empirical models describing the process dynamics of the laser aided metal deposition process is developed based on some of the models found in the literature. These models provide the basis for process planning and real time control. An embedded vision system, a two color temperature sensor, and a laser displacement sensor are incorporated for real time monitoring and control of the deposition process. The temperature profile of the surface and geometric characteristics of the melt pool are studied to ensure consistent operation of the process.

This paper focuses on differential signal transmission above ground planes with gaps, taking into account the dielectric and conductive losses of the substrate. An equivalent lumped-circuit is proposed and its suitability is investigated by comparing the obtained numerical results with the measured data. Furthermore the differential to common mode conversion of the waves, while crossing the gap, is theoretically analyzed and experimentally verified.

Segmented power planes are often used for DC power bus noise isolation in multi-layered printed circuit board (PCB) designs. To achieve a desirable noise isolation, different power plane segmentations can be used. A suitable modeling approach, as well as measurements, were employed to study the power bus isolation with several power plane segmentation configurations. The studied geometries included power island designs connected with a conducting bridge, a ferrite bead, and a π-filter. EMI filters are often utilized on I/O lines to reduce high-frequency noise from being conducted or coupled off the PCB and resulting in an EMI problem. However, layout parasitics are usually inevitable in practical circuit design, and the filtering performance may vary. In this study, the impact of the board layout on the filtering performance is investigated by |S21| measurements of sample PCB boards with different filter layouts. The finite-difference time-domain method is applied to model the boards, support the experimental work, and can be used to provide a means for conducting "what-if" engineering studies.

Logic synthesis for reversible logic differs considerably from standard logic synthesis. The gates are multi-output and the unutilized outputs from these gates are called “garbage”. One of the synthesis tasks is to reduce the number of garbage signals. Previous approaches to reversible logic synthesis minimized either only the garbage or (predominantly) the number of gates. Here we present for the first time a method that minimizes concurrently the number of gates, their total delay and the total garbage. A composite media containing particles with a high internal field of magnetic anisotropy (hexagonal ferrites) useful for numerous EMC applications in a wide frequency band is considered. Effective constitutive parameters of a high-loss composite gyromagnetic media are represented in the Lorentzian form. It is convenient for the numerical analysis using the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) algorithm with a recursive convolution procedure. The equations for the electric and magnetic field updating in such media are represented.

A relatively simple, closed-form expression has been developed to estimate the EMI from shielding enclosures due to coupling from interior sources through slots and apertures at the enclosure cavity modes. A power-balance method, Bethe's (1944) small-hole theory, and empirically developed formulas for the relation between radiation, and slot length and number of slots, were employed to estimate an upper bound on the radiated EMI from shielding enclosures. Comparisons between measurements and estimated field strengths suitably agree within engineering accuracy.

Specific design criteria are proposed to mitigate radiated emissions from a resonant enclosure excited by a heat sink acting as a microstrip patch antenna source. In this particular application, the EMI mechanism is assumed to be due to coupling from the dominant TMz010 mode to one or more resonant modes associated with the enclosure dimensions. The enclosure is then presumed to radiate, at the enclosure resonance frequencies, through one or more apertures, slots, or seams. EMI problems caused by the presence of heatpipe/heatspreader and heatsink structures in a high-speed design are well known in engineering practice. High-frequency noise can be coupled from IC packages to an electrically conductive heatsink or heatspreader attached to the IC, which then is radiated, or the energy coupled to an enclosure cavity mode. This EMI coupling path was modeled with the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method, and a mitigation approach was investigated. Circuit board mounted, shunt capacitive filters are less effective at high frequencies because of the mutual inductance (M) that exists between the input and output ports. An approximate expression for the mutual inductance is M=(μh/2π)ln(h/a); where h=via length and a=radius of the via connecting the capacitor to the return plane. The reduced mutual inductance associated with the new, three-terminal, surface-mounted capacitor results in more than 15 dB increased attenuation compared to two-terminal capacitors over the 0.3-6.0 GHz range with 50 Ω source and load terminations

Surface mount technology (SMT) ferrite beads are often used in high-speed digital circuit designs to mitigate noise. The common modeling approach is to include SMT ferrite beads as equivalent lumped LCR circuits. The work presented in this paper included SMT ferrite beads as a frequency-dependent impedance in a PEEC-like modeling tool denoted CEMPIE, a circuit extraction approach based on a mixed-potential integral equation formulation. Agreement with measurements demonstrates the approach. The applications shown are segmentation of power areas for noise isolation, and I/O line filtering.

This paper investigates the power bus noise and power bus impedance of printed circuit boards with four different kinds of embedded capacitance. These boards have power-ground plane pairs separated by a very thin layer of material with high dielectric permittivity. It is shown that embedded capacitance effectively reduces power bus noise over the entire frequency range evaluated (up to 5 GHz).

A passivity-based controller, which takes into account saturation of the magnetic material in the main flux path of the induction motor, is developed to provide close tracking of time-varying speed and flux trajectories in the high magnetic saturation regions. The proposed passivity based controller is experimentally verified. Also, a comparison between the controllers based on the saturated and nonsaturated magnetics is presented to demonstrate the benefit of the controller based on the saturated magnetics

FMC Jetway Systems has been manufacturing and servicing airport products for over forty years. These products include passenger boarding bridges, pre-conditioned air units, potable water systems and solid-state 400 hertz converters. Components produced by Jetway can be found on over 190 airports across the world. Their Apron Drive Passenger Boarding Bridge (Fig. 1) is the most versatile and widely used boarding bridge in the world. Only recently has the company aimed at gaining a portion of the quickly expanding market of commuter flights.

This paper presents the estimation of travel time on highways based on macroscopic modelling. The focus is on real-time values as compared to average or static values. The macroscopic models are used for distributed and time/space lumped settings and corresponding travel time estimation functions and algorithms are developed. The implications of these algorithms for the implementation of various incident management and traffic control strategies are also discussed.

Exclusive-Sums-Of-Products (ESOPs) play an important role in logic synthesis and design-for-test. This paper presents an improved version of the heuristic ESOP minimization procedure proposed in [1,2]. The improvements concern three aspects of the procedure: (1) computation of the starting ESOP cover; (2) increase of the search space for solutions by applying a larger set of cube transformations; (3) development of specialized datastructures for robust manipulation of ESOP covers. Comparison of the new heuristic ESOP minimizer EXORCISM-4 with other minimizers (EXMIN2 [3], MINT [4], EXORCISM-2 [1] and EXORCISM3 [2]) show that, in most cases, EXORCISM-4 produces results of comparable or better …

A three-dimensional waveguiding structure for a microcavity surface-emitting laser is described in which native aluminum oxide layers provide control of intracavity waveguiding and the laser optical mode structure of the emitted beam. Microcavity lasers described herein account for the blueshift of the emission wavelength as the laser lateral dimensions are reduced to or below the emission wavelength.
