With the prevalence of the information age, privacy and personalization are forefront in today's society. As such, biometrics are viewed as essential components of current and evolving technological systems. Consumers demand unobtrusive and noninvasive approaches. In our previous work, we have demonstrated a speaker verification system that meets these criteria. However, there are additional constraints for fielded systems. The required recognition transactions are often performed in adverse environments and across diverse populations, necessitating robust solutions.

The mechanism of radio-frequency current collapse in GaN–AlGaN heterojunctionfield-effect transistors(HFETs) was investigated using a comparative study of HFET and metal–oxide–semiconductor HFET current–voltage (I–V) and transfer characteristics under dc and short-pulsed voltage biasing. Significant current collapse occurs when the gate voltage is pulsed, whereas under drain pulsing the I–V curves are close to those in steady-state conditions. Contrary to previous reports, we conclude that the transverse electric field across the wide-band-gap barrier layer separating the gate and the channel rather than the gate or surface leakage currents or high-field effects in the gate–drain spacing is responsible for the current collapse. A multiple differential pair circuit is disclosed having a transconductance, gm, proportional to the bias current, I0, for any transistor technology. The transistors utilized to construct each of the differential transistor pairs in a multiple differential pair circuit operate in a non-exponential voltage-current (V-I) region. As multiple differential pair circuits are linearized, the effective transconductance, gm, becomes (i) linearly dependent on bias current, and (ii) insensitive to the voltage-current (V-I) characteristics of the utilized devices. Each year, U.S. institutions grant well over 10,000 bachelor's degrees in science and engineering. However, only a small fraction of those students pursue graduate study. Many who do often experience great difficulty partly due to a lack of preparation for research: the nature of research is inherently foreign to those who are accustomed to studying course material and demonstrating their mastery of it by passing an exam. Carefully involving undergraduates in research can be an effective means for inspiring students to pursue graduate study. Nondestructive material testing and diagnostics play an important role in reliability analysis, component wear-out testing, life-cycle estimates, and safety inspections. Of the several techniques available for nondestructive inspections, thermal analysis has been chosen to be the focus of this thesis research. An equivalence between the system of equations for the heat flow problem, and the variables of circuit theory suggests that an electrical model can be constructed to represent the actual thermal system. The measurement of atmospheric ozone is important because in the troposphere it is a pollutant that is toxic to living systems, but in the stratosphere ozone protects life by shielding us from the sun's harmful UV-B radiation.
Laser remote sensing from aircraft using differential absorption lidar (DIAL) has become a very important technique for measuring atmospheric ozone at different altitudes and locations. Current aircraft-based DIAL systems use pulsed Nd:YAG pumped liquid dye lasers, which are then frequency doubled into the UV region, to probe both the stratosphere and troposphere for ozone.

A lidar system was developed for making combined range-resolved measurements of wind speed and direction, water vapor concentration, and carbon dioxide concentration in the atmosphere. This lidar combines the coherent Doppler technique for wind detection and the differential absorption lidar (DIAL) technique to provide a multifunctional capability. DIAL and coherent lidars have traditionally been thought of and implemented as separate instruments, but the research reported here has shown a demonstration of combining the coherent and DIAL techniques into a single instrument using solid-state lasers. The phase transitions at the low-index surfaces of germanium were investigated using conventional and 100-ps time-resolved reflection high-energy electron diffraction. For the time-resolved studies, the surface is heated by 100-ps laser pulse while a synchronized electron beam probes the structure. When heated by 100-ps laser pulse, Ge(111)-c(2x8) and Ge(100)-(2x1) reconstruction is seen to overheat above the onset temperatures for the disordering under thermodynamic equilibrium. Slow heating shows that the adatoms in the Ge(111)-c(2x8) reconstruction state start to disorder at ∼510 K and are converted to a totally disordered adatom arrangement at 573 K. For heating with 100-ps laser pulses, time-resolved …

Gas filter correlation radiometry (GFCR) is a high-resolution, high-specificity technique for sensing gaseous species. A variation of absorption spectroscopy, GFCR has a long-proven record on orbital platforms for quantitative measurements of atmospheric constituents, as well as common usage in ground-based sensing applications. PMGFCR (Polarization-modulated GFCR) is a recent refinement of the technique with several advantages over the traditional method, including reducing the number of photodetectors required, increased sensitivity, and elimination of moving parts.

We described an adaptive denoising method to improve image quality in a wavelet-based image compression process that uses dithered quantization. In our method, the second-order moment of the quantization noise is made independent of the signal by random quantization. Then, the quantization noise is reduced by thresholding wavelet coefficients. We first obtained a fixed threshold using any known technique. Then, a neighborhood is searched for the optimal threshold to optimize some cost function.

Video displays based on polymer and organic displays require high resolution and high data rates. However, the transient response of passive matrix displays based on polymer and organic light-emitting diodes limits display resolution, image uniformity, and image contrast. We use circuit simulation in order to quantify these consequences. This work analyzes how the transient response depends on display resolution, display geometry, pixel position, and row and column electrode design. We conclude that advanced display designs can achieve uniform images at high resolution and contrast.

Research and development of displays and image sensors based on semiconducting polymers require design of new polymer materials and evaluation of film properties. Application of statistical methods can expedite process development. Optimizing device performance entails determining the effect of several process parameters, necessitates numerous samples, and may consume more scarce new material than desired. Uniform film thickness, with no voids, pinholes, inhomogeneities, or particulate contamination across the substrate can improve display efficiency and uniformity. An indirect adaptive and reconfigurable flight control system is developed. The three-module controller consists of: (1) a system identification module, (2) a parameter estimate smoother, and (3) a proportional and integral compensator for tracking control. Specifically: (1) The identification of a linear discrete-time control system's open-loop gain is addressed. The classical Kalman filter theory for linear control systems is extended and the control system's state and loop gain are jointly estimated on-line. This paper presents an efficient method to solve a large body scattering problem, viz. a paraboloid reflector antenna system, with only partial circular symmetry. The asymmetry in the system is introduced by two factors, viz. the microstrip feed and an inhomogeneous radome. The paper presents a novel approach, based on the equivalence and reciprocity principles and the “equivalent” aperture theory, to overcome the asymmetry problem. The technique thereby enables substantial computational efficiencies by analyzing the majority of the three-dimensional (3-D) computational domain in an effective two-dimensional (2-D) simulation, with the remainder being analyzed using a 3-D algorithm.

CV-1144-O silicone thin films were irradiated in an electron cyclotron resonance oxygen plasma, which is a simulation of the low earth orbital environment. A crude equivalence between this plasma system and the low earth orbital environment was determined by measuring Kapton weight loss in the plasma and comparing to Kapton weight loss in space experiments. Changes in optical properties and erosion rates under ultraviolet light and atomic oxygen radiation were studied using in situ spectroscopic ellipsometry (SE). This study focused on multipath communication propagation impairments to the LEOSAT communications channel. Two terrain diffraction models, based on the geometric theory of diffraction (GTD), were developed and applied to the space-to-ground communications channel. These models were used to predict the impact of terrain on the performance of three LEOSAT communication systems with designs based on the Iridium, Globalstar and Orbcomm implementations. The study verified the feasibility of applying models based on the GTD rather than empirical or statistical models, to approximate the effect of propagating signals over terrain. We develop a decimation-decomposition processing technique that consists of judiciously selecting certain decimation-decomposed components of an image and then performing inter-component processing. For a (kx,ky)-decimation decomposition, there may be up to kxky decimation-decomposed components. The minimal surviving and maximal non-surviving lengths associated with inter-component processing algorithm allows for clutter suppression. By removing detection redundancies, one can locate the target at high speed. A “where-then-what” model is proposed for target tracking and recognition. It locates the target by-image decimation-decomposition processing first and then recognizes the target in question using a suitable image recognition technique.

The experimental GP-3 radar system was originally designed and built under contract for the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL). AFRL sought AFIT's support in characterizing the as delivered' performance of the GP-3. This research effort focused exclusively on software modifications and hardware validations related to the GP-3 post-processing mode. As modified, tested, and validated, the GP-3's post-processing mode is now fully operational. The GP-3 is capable of transmitting and receiving bandlimited (3.5 MHz) waveforms at X-Band frequencies. Electrical conductors have long been the only materials available to antenna designers for reflecting structures. However, recently reported high impedance ground plane (HIGP) structures offer an alternative by creating image currents and reflections, within a limited frequency stop-band, that are in-phase with a source rather than out-of-phase as for a perfect electric conducting (PEC) surface. Also, the high impedance structures suppress surface waves while surface waves propagate on PEC surfaces. This research explores broadband antenna applications for HIGP structures. A unique ASIC was designed implementing the Haar Wavelet transform for image compression/decompression. ASIC operations include performing the Haar wavelet transform on a 512 by 512 square pixel image, preparing the image for transmission by quantizing and thresholding the transformed data, and performing the inverse Haar wavelet transform, returning the original image with only minor degradation. The ASIC is based on an existing four-chip FPGA implementation. Implementing the design using a dedicated ASIC enhances the speed, decreases chip count to a single die, and uses significantly less power compared to the FPGA implementation. Because of the large number of SAR images the Air Force generates and the dwindling number of available human analysts, automated methods must be developed. A key step towards automated SAR image analysis is image segmentation. A novel phugoid damping control design methodology is developed, based on the use of wind axes and a point-mass aircraft model. The state variables are air speed, flight path angle, and heading angle, the control variables are thrust setting, angle of attack, bank angle, and sideslip angle, and the command signals are airspeed, flight path angle, and heading angle or heading rate. The most precise relative positioning obtained using differential GPS depends on accurately determining carrier-phase integer ambiguities. To achieve high precision, many current static and kinematic algorithms use a floating-point solution until enough information becomes available to fix the carrier-phase ambiguities accurately. A mew method is presented that uses a multiple model Kalman filter to resolve the carrier-phase integer ambiguities. This method starts with the floating-point results, yet smoothly and rapidly attains the precision of the correct fixed-integer solution, eliminating the need to decide when to switch from the floating to the fixed-integer solution. Reconnaissance missions and satellites collect hundreds of images loaded with valuable information to be utilized by the Air Force. Intelligence operations must analyze these images to extract the information needed to help commanders make important decisions. Watermarking, traditionally used for copyright protection, is used in a new and exciting way. An efficient wavelet-based watermarking technique embeds audio information into a video signal. Satellites have limited power budgets due to the amount of power collected by the satellite's solar panels. The goal is to have a wide range of functionality, while running off a limited power source. Large microprocessors use large amounts of power to report back temperature and chemical sensor data to ground stations.
