This paper reviews the findings of a study commissioned by the California Department of Transportation to evaluate the potential of infrared and passive millimeter-wave imaging technologies for traffic surveillance and automated detection. Images formed from radiation at infrared and millimeter wavelengths are characterized by fundamentally different information compared with visible-spectrum images, and generally improved ability to penetrate obscured atmospheres such as fog or dust.
Ten examples of commercially available infrared (IR) imaging technologies and one experimental passive millimeter-wave (MMW) radiometric imaging apparatus were evaluated with respect to the specific requirements of highway monitoring and traffic management. A suite of traffic …

A first-order behavioral IGBT/gate drive model is proposed together with a procedure for deriving all model parameters. Despite the simplicity of the proposed model, comparison of model predictions with hardware measurements demonstrate the model to be accurate in predicting turn-on and turn-off transients.

Signal transitioning through layers on vias are very common in multi-layer printed circuit board (PCB) design. For a signal via transitioning through the internal power and ground planes, the return current must switch from one reference plane to another reference plane. The discontinuity of the return current at the via excites the power and ground planes, and results in noise on the power bus that can lead to signal integrity, as well as EMI problems. This work investigates the feasibility of using Ge2Te2Sb5 chalcogenide films for analog memory. Thick film chalcogenide memory devices provided by Ovonyx, Inc. are characterized to determine how well the devices meet the repeatability, stability and predictability criteria needed to accurately store analog data values. Chalcogenide memory devices take advantage of the phase-shifting nature of chalcogenide materials to store the analog data as a resistance level. Recent increases in the computational power of computers and digital signal processors have made possible new, novel signal tracking techniques in GPS receivers. One such technique is known as Direct Correlators Output Processing (DCOP). This technique replaces individual traditional tracking loops with a single Kalman Filter, which jointly processes the received signals while exploiting their correlated noises. DCOP is innovative in its potential to replace the tried and true classical signal tracking loops. It is also an enabling technology for ultra-tightly coupled GPS/INS (Global Positioning System/Inertial Navigation System). Applique antennas are a long range vision for military vehicles because they are lighter, quicker to replace, less expensive, and can have better performance than conventional antennas. Two newly reported high-impedance ground planes have potential to begin the realization of the applique antenna vision and each is investigated for use with thin conformal antenna structures. Bistatic reflection measurements completely characterize the high-impedance region of planar, thumbtack high-impedance ground planes, and periodic moment method models validate the measurement results. Most previously proposed statistical models for the indoor multipath channel include only time of arrival characteristics. However, in order to use statistical models in simulating or analyzing the performance of systems employing spatial diversity combining, information about angle of arrival statistics is also required. Ideally, it would be desirable to characterize the full spare-time nature of the channel. In this paper, a system is described that was used to collect simultaneous time and angle of arrival data at 7 GHz. Pure hexagonal h, as well as mixed-phase cubic/hexagonal c/h boron nitride (BN) thin films were deposited onto [001] silicon substrates using the dual ion beam deposition technique. The BN thin films were grown under UHV conditions at different substrate temperatures and ion beam bombarding parameters. Thin-film growth was monitored using in situ spectroscopic ellipsometry at 44 wavelengths between 420 and 761 nm. The in situ ellipsometric Ψ and Δ data were compared with two-layer growth model calculations for the mixed-phase c/h BN, and with one-layer growth model calculations for pure h-BN growth. Double-pass laser amplifiers can provide automatic passive regulation of the power in an optical signal. This regulation can significantly reduce the amplitude noise on a laser beam that is intended as a continuous wave light source. Analytic expressions are derived to describe the optical-noise-reduction region of double-pass amplifier operation and the dependence of the self-regulation properties on gain, saturation, and mirror reflectivity.

New applications for GPS have driven a demand for increased positioning accuracy. The emerging GPS technology particularly affects the test community. The testing equipment and method must provide a solution that is an order of magnitude more precise than the tested equipment to achieve the desired accuracy. Carrier-phase differential GPS methods using a network of reference receivers can provide the centimeter-level accuracy required over a large geographical area. Differential carrier phase GPS measurements are capable of giving centimeter-level accuracies. These accuracies have many potential applications for safety and control of various types of vehicles. For this research, a real-time guidance system is developed. The real-time guidance system can be divided into two components: hardware and software. The hardware component consists of two GPS receivers (one base, one mobile), two wireless 115 Kbaud transceivers, and two laptop computers. This thesis presents a tool-based methodology for integrating object-oriented data models with automatic generation of code. Recent developments in aviation have made micro air vehicles (MAVs) a reality. These featherweight palm-sized radio-controlled flying saucers embody the future of air-to-ground combat. No one has ever successfully implemented an autonomous control system for MAVs. Although jamming of radars has been in vogue for nearly 50 years there appears to be no comprehensive report on the subject matter. The purpose of this research is to fill this gap. The methodology consisted of analysis, simulation, and where feasible experimental demonstrations. Experimental equipment consisted of a digital noise generator whose output was used to modulate a high frequency carrier in various fashions. This thesis provides a method to reduce physical resource requirements along with cost reduction in Space Based Radar (SBR) platforms, and provides a rule of thumb for randomization effects on arrays. A trend analysis is performed on 4, 8, 12, and 16 square meter arrays. Three aperiodic thinning approaches are examined. They are an equal current density element distribution, a random periodic grid of elements, and random element distribution based a peak sidelobe indicator. The Treaty on Opens Skies allows any signatory nation to fly a specifically equipped reconnaissance aircraft anywhere over the territory of any other signatory nation. For photographic images, this treaty allows for a maximum ground resolution of 30 cm. The National Air Intelligence Center (NAIC), which manages implementation of the Open Skies Treaty for the US Air Force, wants to determine if post-processing of the photographic images can improve spatial resolution beyond 30 cm, and if so, determine the improvement achievable. An investigation has been made to obtain the glyoxalic acid by the electrochemical oxidation of glyoxal solution with hydrochloric acid under various experimental conditions.The cell used consists of a lead cathode, a DSA anode and a cation-exchange membrane of model CM001. The current efficiency and yield for glyoxalic acid generation were 80.0% and 91.1% respectively, under optimal operating conditions: velocity of electrolyte flow 1.4 m·s-1 ,current density 450 A·m-2, temperature 30~40 ℃, initial concentration of glyoxal and hydrochloric acid 9.1%~16.0%, 4%~6%, respectively.

The oxidation peak potentials (Ep) of alinine derivates and catechol in 0.1 mol/L KCl+15% alcohol solution were measured by cyclic voltammograms technique. The electrochemical oxidation condition was set according to the Ep. Three derivates of 4,5-disubstituted -1,2-benzoquinones were prepared via electrochemical oxidation-Michael addition reaction. The possible mechanism of electrochemical oxidation-Michael addition reaction is presented.

Ir-Ta-Ti metal oxide coated titanium anodes of variable composition were prepared by thermal decomposition. Their micro morphorogies and electrochemical properties were characterized by scanning electron microscope, open circuit potential, cyclic voltammetry, consumption rate measurements and accelerated life test. The SEM results indicated that all coatings were of a porous and cracked-mud microstructure influenced greatly by the composition of coatings. The electrochemical measurements showed that the Ir-Ta-Ti ternary oxide-coated anodes exhibited excellent electrochemical activity and electrochemical stability in both acidic media and seawater which were affected by the composition and microstructure of the coatings. To lower platinum loading in electrodes for polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell, a new thin electrode fabrication technique (TEFT) was developed in this work. A series of low Pt loading electrodes with smooth and uniformed surface were fabricated by the TEFT. As a result, the maximum power density of the cell with platinum loading of 1 mg/cm2 and Nafion 117 membrane as electrolyte was up to 0.3 W.cm-2. Moreover, the effects of PTFE and Nafion content in cathodes on the performance of PEMFC with low Pt loading electrodes (1 mg Pt/cm2) were examined systematically.

We report on structural, optical, and electrical properties of AlxInyGa1−x−yNGaNheterostructures grown on sapphire and 6H–SiC substrates. Our results demonstrate that incorporation of In reduces the lattice mismatch, Δa, between AlInGaN and GaN, and that an In to Al ratio of close to 1:5 results in nearly strain-free heterostructures. The observed reduction in band gap,ΔEg, determined from photoluminescence measurements, is more than 1.5 times higher than estimated from the linear dependencies of Δa and ΔEg on the In molar fraction. Carbon films were made using spray-thermal evaporation from a kind of pyrolytic carbon powder. The films obtained with graphite structure were both potentio-statically and galvanostaically tested. Cycling patterns indicated a reduction peak on the first cycle corresponding to the formation of solid electrolyte interface, and the capacity values and x values were quite acceptable compared to theoretical ones when charging-discharging current density was suitable. Based on the experimental results, the obtained carbon films could be used as anode materials for relatively determining the electrochemical performances of cathode materials.

The positive and negative pastes were prepared by mixing PbCO3 and H2SO4 solution as well as relative additives, respectively. The effects of the various formation methods and the charge/discharge conditions on discharge capacity and active material utilization of both electrodes were examined. The results indicate that the performance of the positive electrode formed at 2.0 mA/cm2 is better than that formed at higher current density under the same charge/discharge condition, the PAM utilization reaches 74.4 % under discharging at 2.0 mA/cm2; and the property of the negative electrode formed by unsymmetrical square wave …

Performances of nickel electrodes when adding or without adding Cobalt in different forms were studied, the results were interpreted by cyclic voltammetry(CV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscope (EIS). It was demonstrated that the additions of Co, CoO, CoO+Co by mechanically mixing with Ni(OH)2 all can improve the performance of nickel electrode to some extent, and when Co is added in the form of CoO the best performance can be obtained. By using a cost-effective wet process,dense yttria stabilized zirconia (YSZ) films on Ni-YSZ anode substrates have been prepared successfully. The YSZ film was characterized to be around 10 μm in thickness, sufficiently dense, uniform and crack free. A single solid oxide fuel cell fabricated from the supported YSZ film electrolyte on the anode substrate and a LSM cathode prepared on the YSZ film was tested. The power density reached to 0.1 W/cm2 at 800 ℃, showing a reasonable performance. A cathodic indirect electro-oxidation system was established for indirect electro-oxidize dimethyl sulfoxide to dimethyl sulfone with electro-eduction generated H2O2 catalyzed by the pertungstate/tungstate (WO52-/WO42-) redox mediator. Influences of current density, pH, temperature, and the current efficiencies etc. On the cathodic indirect electro-oxidation of dimethyl sulfone were investigated for determining optimum reaction conditions. The current efficiency reached more than 70%. Mother-liquid could be recycled to use without pollution.

This paper presents a perspective on offering "shared-courses," or courses simultaneously offered at two or more universities via various distance educational frameworks. Over a three year duration, two senior/graduate level courses were jointly developed and offered to the students at the University of Missouri--Rolla, the University of Arkansas, Kansas State University, and Purdue University. This paper discusses the various distance educational technologies including two-way audio/visual via ISDN line, video-tapes, and web-based conferencing. Both instructor and student reactions to these mediums are included. Pedagogical methods appropriate for these mediums are outlined.
