The adequacy of the DC power bus decoupling for CMOS devices can be determined if the effective board decoupling capacitance, the CMOS load capacitance, the CMOS power dissipation capacitance, the switching time, and the allowable bus noise voltage are known. A simple method is presented for estimating the effective decoupling capacitance. The load and power dissipation capacitance values are shown analytically and experimentally to be closely related to the transient current. The transient current and switching time are used to estimate the transient noise voltage on the power bus

The imaging dielectric resonators with whispering gallery modes (WGMs) for the creation of a new class of millimeter wave solid-state oscillators, devices for the investigation of high temperature superconductors, were suggested. They contain a dielectric element as a semidisk or a cylinder or a hemisphere and a flat metal mirror. The latter is a necessary element for placing in the resonator field active elements or conductor samples of materials. The aim of this paper is to consider the problem of electromagnetic scattering from perfectly conducting strips coated with thin dielectric material by use of the adaptive multiscale moment method (AMMM). In the next section, the basic formulation is presented for analysis of scattering from coated conducting strips on the basis of a coupled system of electric- and magnetic-field integral equations. Section 3 outlines the computational methodology of the multiscale basis by use of the moment method. Section 4 presents AMMM to solve the coupled EM integral equations. Power consumption has become a major concern in the electronic industry in recent years because of the increased demand for portable electronic devices. Part of the problem in power conscious design is accurate power estimation. Power estimation at low-levels of design abstraction is slow since the units of low-levels of design abstraction are transistors or gates. But designers need reliable power estimates early in the design process. The research deals with the experimental study of square spiral microstrip antennas over the 5 to 12 GHz range. Square spiral microstrip antennas can provide a wideband reception at frequencies of several gigaHertz. They can, like other microstrip antennas be made conformal and are compact and light weight. This transmitter is to process digital signals in real-time and modulate it with sinusoidal and cosinusoidal signals to produce the required QPSK waveform. A macro facility that allows end users to extend interactive graphical applications is presented as part of a user-interface management system (UIMS). Such macros are expressed by example; that is, the end user programs the macro in the application's generated user interface. Problems with macros-by-example in graphical applications are explored, and requirements to accommodate such a facility are defined for the UIMS dialogue model. Existing UIMS models are reviewed relative to these requirements, and the unique facilities of the MIKE (menu interaction kontrol environment) semantics-based model are presented. This paper will discuss the compensation of first order lag plus time delay (FOLPD) processes using PI and PID controllers whose parameters are specified using appropriate tuning rules. The gain margin, phase margin and maximum sensitivity of the compensated system as the ratio of time delay to time constant of the process varies, are used as ways of judging the performance and robustness of the system.

The compensation of a pH process is complicated by the non-linear nature of the process titration curve and the significant time delays that typically exist in such processes. This paper will propose the use of a gain scheduled piecewise adaptive PI controller to compensate the process. A pilot plant is controlled, with the control algorithm implemented on a programmable controller. SCADA software displays and trends the plant and controller signals.

Electrooptic spectroscopy of an antiferroelectric liquid crystal is carried out over a range of frequencies from 1 Hz to 100 kHz. In the antiferroelectric SmCA phase two relaxation processes are found, one at the fundamental frequency of a mode and the second at twice the frequency of a different mode. A comparison of the results of the electro-optic spectroscopy with a theoretical study of the motion of the director of an antiferroelectric helix subject to a weak alternating field enables a determination of the origin of the relaxation processes in antiferroelectric phases. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

An evaluation of some low-cost laminates suitable for microstrip patch antennas is presented. Criteria for the selection of substrates for antenna fabrication are given careful consideration. A coaxial-probe fed linearly-polarized rectangular microstrip patch operating at a frequency of 2.45 GHz was fabricated on four different low cost laminates. The substrates used were polyester, epoxy glass (FR-4), a ceramic filled PTFE composite and a woven glass-reinforced hydrocarbon and ceramic thermoset material. Thin oxide films were grown at temperatures from 373 to 1073 K in plasma and in air on commercially pure titanium substrates. It was determined that the color, thickness, composition, phase, and polarization behavior in a copper electrolyte varied with operating conditions: temperature, oxygen partial pressure, and plasma composition. High-temperature and high oxygen partial pressure plasma produced a thick oxide film. The surface film structure transformed from TiO2 (anatase) to TiO2 (rutile) at a temperature of 600 °C. A lower oxide of the form TinO2n-1, such as Ti2O3 (which may be porous) or possibly Ti3O5, was formed on a thermally …

This paper discusses a fast efficient adaptive filtering algorithm for network echo cancellers PNLMS++ (proportionate normalized least mean squares ++). Compared to the conventional normalized least mean squares (NLMS) algorithm, PNLMSI++ converges much more quickly when the echo path is sparse. When the echo path is dispersive, the convergence rate is the same as NLMS. In addition, the new algorithm diverges at the same rate and to the same misalignment level as NLMS during periods of undetected double-talk. PNLMS++ is only 50% more computationally complex than NLMS and requires no additional memory

We have developed the theory and analog hardware implementation for a Continuous Wavelet Transform (CWT). This novel circuit performs an orthogonal decomposition of temporal signals, such as speech, in a frequency range of 10 Hz to 20 kHz. This multiresolution processor expands the Laguerre structure originally developed by Lee (1960).

Formulation Of The Boltzmann Equation As A Multi-Mode Drift-Diffusion Equation, Kausar Banoo, Farzin Assad, Mark S. Lundstrom

We present a multi-mode drift-diffusion equation as reformulation of the Boltzmann equation in the discrete momentum space. This is shown to be similar to the conventional drift-diffusion equation except that it is a more rigorous solution to the Boltzmann equation because the current and carrier densities are resolved into M x 1 vectors, where M is the number of modes in the discrete momentum space. The mobility and diffusion coefficient become M M matrices which connect the M momentum space modes. This approach is demonstrated by simulating electron transport in bulk silicon.

This paper presents a study of feed-forward neural network (NN) systems developed to determine the head kinematics of subjects who are exposed to impact accelerations. The neural networks process accelerometer data collected during short-duration impact acceleration tests conducted at the National Biodynamcis Laboratory of the University of New Orleans. During an impact acceleration experiment, the subject sits on the sled chair and a piston gives impetus to the sled to travel down a track. Head data is gathered by an array of nine accelerometers. Two more accelerometers are mounted on the sled.

A new, inexpensive radiosonde transmitter and receiver system has been developed for measuring wind field inhomogeneities in the planetary boundary layer using multiple simultaneously launched balloons. The radio- sondes use a narrowband-frequency-modulated carrier signal to transmit atmospheric pressure and temperature information to a surface receiver. The pressure and temperature data transmitted by the radiosondes allow their height above the surface to be ascertained. In addition, the radiosondes can be tracked with a photographic camera system to provide the azimuth and elevation angles of the radiosondes during their ascent, so that their three-dimensional horizontal position can be determined. Dopant profiles were determined by ex situ Fourier transform infrared variable-angle spectroscopic ellipsometry. The technique exploits carrier absorption in the mid-infrared spectral range and combines the sensitivity of ellipsometry with a simple Drude free carrier absorption model to determine the carrier profile. The noncontact, nondestructive nature of the measurement suggests both ex situ and in situ monitoring and control applications. In this study, the carrier profiles were modeled as graded multilayers that can be constrained to a given functional form (Gaussian, erfc, etc.) when desired. A self-consistent Boltzmann-Poisson-Schrödinger Solver is used to study the transconductance degradation in high electron mobility transistor (HEMT), which has extensively been reported by both experimental [1]-[8] and computational [9]-[ 13] researchers. As the gate voltage of a HEMT device is increased, its transconductance increases until it reaches a peak value, beyond which, the transconductance is degraded rather sharply with further increase in applied gate bias. We previously reported a two-subband self-consistent Boltzmann-Poisson- Schrödinger Solver for HEMT. [14] We further incorporated an additional self-consistency by calculating field-dependent, energy-dependent intersubband and intrasubband scattering rates due to ionized impurities and polar optical phonons.[15] …

Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) is discussed as a special form of multi-carrier modulation (MCM). One major problem of the OFDM system is the sensitivity to an unknown frequency offset at the receiver. To improve the performance of the OFDM system, correction of the frequency offset is required before decision making. An adaptive method of frequency offset correction is presented. Techniques for producing, measuring, and applying ever shorter electromagnetic pulses are being developed for incorporation in a variety of modern high-speed systems. In many cases these pulses are at most a few cycles in length, and so-called half-cycle electromagnetic pulses are also widely employed. The interaction of such pulses with two-level media is considered here in detail, and these media are basic to many of the absorbing and amplifying configurations of optics and laser studies. Finding column multiplicity index is one of important component processes in functional decomposition of discrete functions for circuit design and especially Data Mining applications. How important it is to solve this problem exactly from the point of view of the minimum complexity of decomposition, and related to it error in Machine Learning type of applications? Regular layout is a fundamental concept in VLSI design which can have application in custom design for submicron technologies, designing new architectures for fine-grain Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) and Electrically Programmable logic Devices (EPLDs), and minimization of logic functions for existing FPGAs. PLAs are well known examples of regular layouts. Lattice diagrams are another type of regular layouts that have been recently introduced for layout-driven logic synthesis. A novel approach based on the second law of thermodynamics is developed to investigate the psychophysiology and quantify human stress level. Two types of stresses (thermal and mental) are examined. A Unified Stress Response Theory (USRT) is developed under the new proposed field of study called Engineering Psychophysiology. The USRT is used to investigate both thermal and mental stresses from a holistic (human body as a whole) and thermodynamic viewpoint. The original concepts and definitions are established as postulates which form the basis for thermodynamic approach to quantify human stress level.
