An analytical approach is presented for the jitter performance of a timing recovery circuit consisting of a prefilter, a zero-memory nonlinear device, and a narrow band postfilter tuned to the pulse repetition frequency. Assuming first a squarer type of nonlinearity, analytical expressions for the rms jitter in the timing wave are obtained as a function of the pre and post filtering characteristics. These expressions are suitable for judging the case where the baseband signal is bandlimited. Also for some specific examples, the jitter performance of this kind of STR circuit is evaluated.

Multistage interconnection networks for use by multiprocessor systems are optimal in terms of the number of switching element, but the routing algorithms used to set up these networks are suboptimal in terms of time. The network set-up time and reliability are the major factors to affect the performance of multistage interconnection networks. This work improves routing on Benes and Clos networks as well as the fault tolerant capability. The permutation representation is examined as well as the Clos and Benes networks. A Flexible Manufacturing System (FMS) consisting of p automated guided vehicles (AGV's), m workstations and n tasks is studied. The main problem investigated in this thesis is to find an optimal or suboptimal task scheduling for p AGV's among m workstations to complete n tasks.
An efficient approach based on genetic algorithms has been designed and implemented to solve the problem of task scheduling for a FMS. Near-optimal, or even optimal, task scheduling is accomplished by genetic algorithms. Simulation results on the algorithm are also discussed.

In an interconnected network, if user demands are allowed to exceed the system capacity, unpleasant congestion effects occur which rapidly neutralize the delay and efficiency advantages. Congestion can be eliminated by using an appropriate set of traffic monitoring and control procedures called flow control procedures. Ordinary service and exhaustive service are two major alternatives of scheduling policies considered in providing access to token ring networks. Results to date have shown that exhaustive service results in more delay to lightly loaded stations in asymmetric traffic while ordinary service wastes time in circulating the token after each transmission. This work presents a new token passing protocol, called adaptive service, in which the token holding time is dynamically changing; in this way, it provides a fair compromise between exhaustive and ordinary service. A simulation model of integrated voice and data is developed. The data packets are transmitted during voice inactivity (i.e. silence duration). A statistical model of voice (talkspurt) and silence duration is generated. inter-arrival time between data packets is modeled using geometrical distribution. The data traffic statistics is simulated for a given voice activity model and various data packet arrival rates. Four important results are obtained by performing this simulation: 1. A new C-MOS NAND and CMOS full adder logic circuits which reduces hot carrier problems are discussed. The application of new circuit lowers the channel electric field in N-MOSFET during switching transient and leads to suppression of the N-MOSFET substrate current. The simulation results shows that about 3.99 and 3.75 times smaller peak substrate current are obtained in C-MOS NAND and adder with new circuit compared to the conventional logic circuits. The performance of conventional computers in image processing applications is known to be inadequate due to the enormous computational requirements. Almost all image processing applications can be implemented in parallel. This thesis is the parallel implementation of neighborhood averaging and edge detection by the Sobel and Laplacian operators on the Mesh Connected Computer Computer Simulator (MCCS), a package developed at NJIT to study the behavior of SIMD machines. Expressions for speedup, utilization and efficiency have been derived. Suggestions for further improvements that can be incorporated in MCCS and its instruction set have been made.

The use of visual perception in autonomous mobile systems was approached with caution by mobile robot developers because of the high computational cost and huge memory requirements of most image processing operations. When used, the image processing is implemented on multiprocessors or complex and expensive systems, thereby requiring the robot to be wired or radio controlled from the computer system base.

Visible Light Emission From Semiconducting Polymer Diodes, David Braun, A. J. Heeger

We report visible light emission from Shottky diodes made from semiconducting polymers, confirming the discovery by the Cambridge group [Nature 347, 539 (1990)]. Our results demonstrate that light-emitting diodes can be fabricated by casting the polymer film from solution with no subsequent processing or heat treatment required. Electrical characterization reveals diode behavior with rectification ratios greater than 104. We propose that tunneling of electrons from the recitifying metal contact into the gap states of the positive polaron majority carriers dominates current flow and provides the mechanism for light emission.

Semiclassical models for laser-dynamics studies typically incorporate a derivative approximation that reduces the second-order wave equation for the electric field to a first-order equation. It is shown here that this approximation and further frequency approximations are not necessary and may lead to significant errors for some high-gain laser systems. A more exact analysis also reveals a partial decoupling of the electric and magnetic fields that occurs with fast transient phenomena. These ideas are illustrated in terms of well-known dynamical effects.

A series of TbFeCo films ranging in thickness from 100 to 800 Å have been deposited in trilayer structures on silicon wafer substrates, with S3N4 being employed as the dielectric material. These films have been characterized both optically and magneto-optically by variable angle of incidence spectroscopic ellipsometry, normal angle of incidence) reflectometry, and normal angle of incidence Kerr spectroscopy. From these measurements, the optical constants n and k have been determined for the TbFeCo films, as well as the magneto-optical constants Ql and Q2. Joint flexibility plays an important role in the distribution of strains and displacements in the frame structures of buildings, towers, automobiles, etc.. The objective of this project is to study the effect of flexibility (or rigidity) of two simple mechanical joints in frame structures on the stress and displacement distributions, using both experimental and analytical methods. This project focuses its attention on the detection and quantification of Atrophic Rhinitis (A.R.), a disease prevalent in pigs. A.R. causes some of the bony structure in a pig's snout to atrophy, which exposes the animal to other diseases that may effect its growth. It is studied by examining a cross section of the pig's snout. By comparing areas and perimeters of the nasal cavity to bony structures, or turbinates in the snout, one can determine the severity of the atrophy. The most commonly used model for fault analysis is called the "Stuck-At" model. With this model, a faulty gate input and/or output is modeled as Stuck-at-0 (s--a-0) or Stuck-at-1 (s-a-1). After a certain number of test vectors are applied to a network, the percentage fault coverage is computed. This computed value relates to the percentage of stuck-at faults detectable at the output. The generation of random numbers, having uniform and Gaussian distributions, with application to the time-domain simulation of communication systems is considered. The specific goal is to identify appropriate noise generation algorithms for use in system simulations for the determination of the symbol error probability of a digital communication system. Several methods of generating both uniform and Gaussian random numbers are examined. An attempt is made at integrating channel routing gnd compaction. A new gridless three-layer channel router based on an integrated approach to channel routing and compaction is presented. Routing is based on combined constraint graphs. Nets are selected from the input net list based on the criteria of ancestor and descendant weights in the combined constraint graphs. Compaction is done immediately after some nets are routed by using a via-segment graph. Research is undertaken to apply high temperature superconducting material to improve the quality factor (Q) of a 5.2 GHz cylindrical resonant cavity. In particular, the approach is to electrophoretically deposit polycrystalline Y1Ba2Cu3O7-x (YBCO) on the conducting surface of the cavity cylinder. Spalling of the YBCO ceramic coating due to expansion and contraction of the cavity during sintering and testing is overcome by segmenting the cylinder.
