Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications
In this article, a new configuration of the modular multilevel converter (MLC) based on the parallel connection of three-level active-neutral-point-clamped (3L-ANPC) cells as well as its improved modulation method is proposed for 1 MHz, 1 MW electric vehicle (EV) megacharger. In the proposed paralleled modular ANPC-MLC, only six high-frequency silicon carbide (SiC) power switches operating at 333 kHz are required to generate 1 MHz switching frequency spectrum. Moreover, the operating voltage of all power devices is halved, the magnitude of the first switching frequency harmonic cluster is decreased by the factor of five, and the load current is equally distributed …

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications
A new single-carrier sensor-less pulsewidth modulation (PWM) method using suggested pseudo reference functions is proposed for packed U-cell (PUC) converter to improve performance and reliability of the PUC converter. It is composed of one PWM carrier signal and two suggested pseudo reference functions. By employing the proposed modulation method, the PUC dc capacitor voltage ripple is substantially decreased, and faster sensor-less capacitor voltage balancing is obtained. Moreover, the power losses are evenly distributed among all power switches. Consequently, notable reduction of the PUC dc capacitor voltage ripple and even distribution of the power loss among switches enhance the PUC converter's …

The Design Of Dynamic Probabilistic Caching With Time-Varying Content Popularity, Jie Gao, Shan Zhang, Lian Zhao, Xuemin Shen
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications
In this paper, we design dynamic probabilistic caching for the scenario when the instantaneous content popularity may vary with time while it is possible to predict the average content popularity over a time window. Based on the average content popularity, optimal content caching probabilities can be found, e.g., from solving optimization problems, and existing results in the literature can implement the optimal caching probabilities via static content placement. The objective of this work is to design dynamic probabilistic caching that: i) converge (in distribution) to the optimal content caching probabilities under time-invariant content popularity, and ii) adapt to the time-varying …

Measurements And Analysis Of Propagation Channels In Vehicle-To-Infrastructure Scenarios, Wei Li, Xiaoya Hu, Jie Gao, Lian Zhao, Xuemin Shen
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications
In this paper, we present measurements and analysis of propagation channels in vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) scenarios, which are the basis of designing vehicular communication systems. Firstly, we propose a deterministic geometry-based method to classify V2I links into three types, i.e., line-of-sight beneath (LOS-B), non-LOS (NLOS), and line-of-sight above (LOS-A), based on the environmental features, where roadside row of trees constitute the main obstacles. Secondly, for each link, we investigate the large-scale fading effect on V2I channels, including the path loss exponent and shadowing components. Subsequently, we validate the empirical path loss model using extensive measurements and two classical channel models. The …

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications
We describe a modeling framework to capture and account for uncertainty in design parameters in embedded systems. We then develop an uncertainty-aware solution to the problem of mapping in embedded systems that uses Network-on-Chip (NoC) based architecture platforms. The problem of mapping is formulated as a multi-objective - reliability, performance, and energy consumption - optimization problem. To solve this problem, we propose a solution based on the NSGA-II genetic algorithm and Monte Carlo simulation techniques. The solution is implemented as a computer-aid design tool that can generate robust 3D Pareto frontiers in the solution space formed by the design objectives …

A Surrogate Weather Generator For Estimating Natural Gas Design Day Conditions, David J. Kaftan, George Corliss, Richard J. Povinelli, Ronald H. Brown
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications
Natural gas customers rely upon utilities to provide gas for heating in the coldest parts of winter. Heating capacity is expensive, so utilities and end users (represented by commissions) must agree on the coldest day on which a utility is expected to meet demand. The return period of such a day is long relative to the amount of weather data that are typically available. This paper develops a weather resampling method called the Surrogate Weather Resampler, which creates a large dataset to support analysis of extremely infrequent events. While most current methods for generating weather data are based on simulation, …

Autonomous Pev Charging Scheduling Using Dyna-Q Reinforcement Learning, Fan Wang, Jie Gao, Mushu Li, Lian Zhao
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications
This paper proposes a demand response method to reduce the long-term charging cost of single plug-in electric vehicles (PEV) while overcoming obstacles such as the stochastic nature of the user's driving behaviour, traffic condition, energy usage, and energy price. The problem is formulated as a Markov Decision Process (MDP) with an unknown transition probability matrix and solved using deep reinforcement learning (RL) techniques. The proposed method does not require any initial data on the PEV driver's behaviour and shows improvement on learning speed when compared to a pure model-free reinforcement learning method. A combination of model-based and model-free learning methods …

Dynamic Modeling And Optimal Design For Net Zero Energy Houses Including Hybrid Electric And Thermal Energy Storage, Huangjie Gong, Vandana Rallabandi, Dan M. Ionel, Donald Colliver, Shaun Duerr, Cristinel Ababei
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications
Net zero energy (NZE) houses purchase zero net metered electricity from the grid over a year. Technical challenges brought forth by NZE homes are related to the intermittent nature of solar generation, and are due to the fact that peak solar generation and load are not coincident. This leads to a large rate of change of load, and in case of high PV penetration communities, often requires the installation of gas power plants to service this variability. This article proposes a hybrid energy storage system including batteries and a variable power electric water heater which enables the NZE homes to …

Modeling And Simulation Of A 20kv Ultra-Fast Dc Circuit Breaker For Electric Shipboard Applications, Trevor Arvin, Jiangbiao He, Nathan Weise, Tiefu Zhao
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications
A novel hybrid circuit breaker for medium voltage dc (MVDC) electric shipboard power systems is proposed. The breaker combines the benefits of the efficiency of a mechanical breaker and the interruption speed of a solid-state breaker. The proposed breaker utilizes a fast-ramping current source with a fast-actuating vacuum interrupter (VI) to provided ultra-fast response time and high on-state efficiency. During normal operation, nominal load current flows through the vacuum interrupter in the main conduction branch, providing a low-resistance path with negligible losses. During a fault, a current zero crossing is achieved by the use of a controllable resonant current source …

After mating, female mosquitoes need animal blood to develop their eggs. In the process of acquiring blood, they may acquire pathogens, which may cause different diseases in humans such as malaria, zika, dengue, and chikungunya. Therefore, knowing the parity status of mosquitoes is useful in control and evaluation of infectious diseases transmitted by mosquitoes, where parous mosquitoes are assumed to be potentially infectious. Ovary dissections, which are currently used to determine the parity status of mosquitoes, are very tedious and limited to few experts. An alternative to ovary dissections is near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS), which can estimate the age in days …

Multi-phase permanent magnet motors are becoming popular in various applications such as high power traction which require low cogging and torque ripple, and reduced noise and vibration. This paper presents the development process of a full order detailed mathematical model for an unconventional nine-phase permanent magnet (PM) motor with asymmetric AC windings. The phase inductances are calculated based on the individual winding functions. Using these parameters, electrical equations for each phase based on the voltages and flux linkages are generated. These equations are transformed into an arbitrary reference frame and the torque equations are developed for the 9-phase motor. A …

Integrated Resource Management For Terrestrial-Satellite Systems, Shu Fu, Jie Gao, Lian Zhao
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications
As data traffic in terrestrial-satellite systems surges, the integration of power allocation for caching, computing, and communication (3C) has attracted much research attention. However, previous works on 3C power allocation in terrestrial-satellite systems mostly focus on maximizing the overall system throughput. In this paper, we aim to guarantee both throughput fairness and data security in terrestrial-satellite systems. Specifically, we first divide the system implementation into three steps, i.e., data accumulation, blockchain computing, and wireless transmission. Then, we model and analyze the delay and power consumption in each step by proposing several theorems and lemmas regarding 3C power allocation. Based on …

In the considered scenario, a UAV plays the role of an aerial cloudlet to collect and process the computation tasks offloaded by ground users. Given the service requirements of users, we aim to maximize UAV energy efficiency by jointly optimizing the UAV trajectory, the user transmit power, and computation load allocation. The resulting optimization problem corresponds to nonconvex fractional programming, and the Dinkelbach algorithm and the successive convex approximation (SCA) technique are adopted to …

Fractional-slot concentrated winding interior permanent magnet (FSCW-IPM) machines have been designed with very low winding mutual inductance for magnetic isolation features required for improving their fault-tolerant capabilities. These magnetically-isolated FSCW-IPM machines no longer adhere to the preconditions required for a conventional abc-to-dq0 transformation. As a result, it is found in this article that d-, q-axes could couple with 0-axis in magnetically-isolated FSCW-IPM machines. Considering the second-order reluctance component, this phenomenon leads to third-harmonic injection in phase voltages during normal operation, which can be cancelled out in terms of line-to-line voltage for Y-connected three-phase system. However, for open-end-winding machine drives without …

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications
Sensitivity of high-speed optical receivers is heavily influenced by the performance of the optical detectors used in the receivers, the data rate, and the target bit-error-rate (BER). A simulation model for sensitivity of optical receivers based on electron-avalanche photodiodes (e-APDs) is presented. It allows for the optimization of avalanche width and operating voltage to achieve the optimum receiver sensitivity for given bit rate and target BER. The effects modelled include inter-symbol interference (ISI), various dark current components (tunnelling, diffusion, and generation), current impulse duration, avalanche gain, and amplifier's noise. The model was demonstrated through simulations of Indium Arsenide (InAs) e-APDs. …

Temperature increases during dielectrophoresis (DEP) can affect the response of biological entities, and ignoring the effect can result in misleading analysis. The heating mechanism of a DEP device is typically considered to be the result of Joule heating and is overlooked without an appropriate analysis. Our experiment and analysis indicate that the heating mechanism is due to the dielectric loss (Debye relaxation). A temperature increase between interdigitated electrodes (IDEs) has been measured with an integrated micro temperature sensor between IDEs to be as high as 70 °C at 1.5 MHz with a 30 Vpp applied voltage to our ultra-low …

A comparative study of five-phase outer-rotor flux-switching permanent magnet (FSPM) machines with different topologies for in-wheel traction applications is presented in this paper. Those topologies include double-layer winding, single-layer winding, C-core, and E-core configurations. The electromagnetic performance in the low-speed region, the flux-weakening capability in the high-speed region, and the fault-tolerance capability are all investigated in detail. The results indicate that the E-core FSPM machine has performance advantages. Furthermore, two kinds of E-core FSPM machines with different stator and rotor pole combinations are optimized, respectively. In order to reduce the computational burden during the large-scale optimization process, a mathematical technique …

Consequently, the effect of winding configurations on the performance of a five-phase outer-rotor FSPM machine is thoroughly investigated, including non-overlapping concentrated windings (single-layer, double-layer, and multi-layer) as well as distributed winding. The electromagnetic characteristics in the low-speed region, the flux-weakening capability in the high-speed region, and the fault-tolerant capability under faulty situations are evaluated and compared in detail. This work shows that compared with the conventional single-layer or double-layer concentrated windings, the FSPM machine …

Flexibility Of Remediation Methods For Winding Open Circuit Faults In A Multiphase Pm Machine Considering Iron Losses Minimization, Fan Wu, Ayman M. El-Refaie
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications
The flexibility of post-fault control in multiphase machine systems stems from their multiple degrees of freedom. A post-fault loss-minimization method is proposed and investigated in this paper, in which both the machine copper and iron losses are considered during the derivation of post-fault remediation methods. Therefore, machine efficiency during post-fault operation can be further improved compared to the conventional stator-ohmic-loss-minimization approach. In addition, the combination of three key factors/constraints that can influence the post-fault control strategy of a six-phase permanent magnet (PM) machine has been investigated. By comparing four selected remediation methods based on three constraints, the pros and cons …

This work presents a design approach for a highly sensitive, miniaturized magnetic sensor. The design makes use of GMI microwires and a multi-electrode SAW IDT. The use of SAW IDTs allows for the magnetic effect of the GMI microwire to be measured through the transduction process. This approach permits simultaneous measurement at different frequencies of operation, enabling highly sensitive measurement over a wide range of magnetic fields. This technique may find application in magnetic sensing for non-invasive battery SOC measurement.

Exact Analytical Formula For The Excess Noise Factor For Mixed Carrier Injection Avalanche Photodiodes, Md. Mottaleb Hossain, John P.R. David, Majeed M. Hayat
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications
The well-known analytical formula for the excess noise factor associated with avalanche photodiodes (APDs), developed by R. J. McIntyre in 1966, assumes the injection of either an electron or a hole at the edge of the APD's avalanche region. This formula is based on the statistics of the probabilities of carriers gaining and losing energy subject to high electric fields. However, this analytical formula, is not applicable in cases when photons are absorbed inside the avalanche region (even though the physics of the high field transport remains the same), and its use may severely underestimate or overestimate the actual excess …
