Functional series representations of nonlinear systems first appeared in engineering in the early 1950’s. One common representation of a nonlinear input-output system are Chen-Fliess series or Fliess operators. Such operators are described by functional series indexed by words over a noncommutative alphabet. They can be viewed as a noncommutative generalization of a Taylor series. This dissertation explores the detection and false alarm rate performance of a novel transmit-waveform and receiver filter design algorithm as part of a larger Compressed Sensing (CS) based Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) bistatic radar system amidst clutter. Transmit-waveforms and receiver filters were jointly designed using an algorithm that minimizes the mutual coherence of the combined transmit-waveform, target frequency response, and receiver filter matrix product as a design criterion. Supercapacitors are energy storage devices with the potential to overshadow lithium-ion batteries in the energy storage sector. Generally supercapacitors store less energy than a lithium-ion battery, but make up for it with much higher power densities that allow supercapacitors to charge and discharge quickly. This can be through the formation of an electric double layer or faradaic phenomenon between the electrode and electrolyte. A non-thermal transient diffuse plasma can be generated remotely in a nonconductive reduced pressure chamber by an external guided fast ionization wave (FIW). We found that an atmospheric-pressure low-temperature plasma jet (APPJ) can be a source of FIW which transfers an enhanced electric field at the wave front across a reduced pressure Pyrex glass chamber with no electrical connection to the chamber. This thesis discusses the development of a pulsed power system for high power picosecond pulse radiation. In the system, a charging transformer, which generates a high voltage pulse of ~100 kV, can be used for charging a transmission line in less than 100 ns. Such a short pulse could cause a peak gap switch to break down and generate a picosecond pulse transient for radiation. A dielectric antenna, if fed with the high voltage picosecond pulses, can radiate them to targets made of high dielectric materials. Biological tissues, for instance, can be targeted for electrostimulation.

Picosecond pulsed electric fields have been shown to have stimulatory effects, such as calcium influx, activation of action potential, and membrane depolarization, on biological cells. Because the pulse duration is so short, it has been hypothesized that the pulses permeate a cell and can directly affect intracellular cell structures by bypassing the shielding of the membrane. This thesis presents the experimental results of a four-phase IDPAL eight-input exclusive-OR gate. The following problems with IDPAL are addressed: multistage circuits malfunctioning, simulation convergence anomalies, and inferring input information through the power clock current. EPAD MOSFETs, which provide a low threshold voltage, are shown to be unsuccessful in correcting the malfunctioning behavior of multilayer circuits. A solution to multilayer IDPAL circuits malfunctioning, called IDPAL with discharge, is shown. The differences between simulation waveforms produced by LTspice and the experimental circuits recorded by a Tektronix’s Oscilloscope are investigated. CIGS is a major technology in photovoltaics and depends heavily, as any other PV technology, on the capacity to achieve the highest efficiency possible to compete on the market. Alkaline elements, notably sodium and potassium, play a key role in this matter as they enhance the open circuit voltage and the fill factor of the CIGS solar cells. However, this effect exists only for very specific concentration of sodium and potassium. These impurities typically diffuse through the soda-lime glass substrate.

Current state-of-the-art memory technologies such as FLASH, Static Random Access Memory (SRAM) and Dynamic RAM (DRAM) are based on charge storage. The semiconductor industry has relied on cell miniaturization to increase the performance and density of memory technology, while simultaneously decreasing the cost per bit. However, this approach is not sustainable because the charge-storage mechanism is reaching a fundamental scaling limit. The use of the low-cost thin-film vapor-liquid-solid (TF-VLS) method in the manufacturing of III-V solar cell substrates has the potential to provide a lightweight, flexible, and cheaper alternative to traditional III-V substrates typical of state-of-the- art power generation technology. The TF-VLS process has been shown to produce high optoelectronic quality polycrystalline InP on lightweight flexible metal foils. In this work, machine learning tools, including recurrent neural networks (RNNs), matrix completion, and non-negative matrix factorization (NMF), are used for cognitive radio problems. Specifically addressed are a missing data problem and a blind signal separation problem. A specialized RNN called Cellular Simultaneous Recurrent Network (CSRN), typically used in image processing applications, has been modified. The CRSN performs well for spatial spectrum prediction of radio signals with missing data. An algorithm called soft-impute for matrix completion used together with an RNN performs well for missing data problems in the radio spectrum time-frequency domain. In this thesis the sensitivity of energy conversion efficiency (ECE) and output power of a class-E resonant inverter under variable resistive and inductive load assignments is examined for wireless power transfer (WPT) applications. By performing simulation and mathematical analysis, it was found that the on-resistance of the switching device has minor effect on the design’s efficiency. Additional comparisons between the simulation and mathematical analysis show reasonable output power and ECE load variation performance for the design, but with unique load impedances where zero voltage switching (ZVS) and zero derivative switching (ZDS) are achieved. These comparisons also expose inaccurate mathematical assumptions. …

Biomedical applications of low temperature plasmas (LTP) may lead to a paradigm shift in treating various diseases by conducting fundamental research on the effects of LTP on cells, tissues, organisms (plants, insects, and microorganisms). This is a rapidly growing interdisciplinary research field that involves engineering, physics, life sciences, and chemistry to find novel solutions for urgent medical needs.
