The purpose of this research is to determine the usefulness of fuzzy logic and fuzzy control when applied to a commercial appliance. Fuzzy logic is a structured, model-free estimator that approximates a function through linguistic input/output associations. Fuzzy rule-based systems apply these methods to solve many types of "real-world" problems, especially where a system is difficult to model, is controlled by a human operator or expert, or where ambiguity or vagueness is common.

The power and bandwidth efficiency of multi-h continuous- phase modulation (CPM) schemes in practical environments are considered. Specific impairments considered are transmitter filtering, amplitude limiting, and receiver symbol timing, phase error, and decision depth sensitivities. A coherent receiver model is employed which uses the Viterbi algorithm (VA) to perform maximum likelihood sequence estimation. For (2/4,3/4), ll (3/8,4/8) and (4/8,5/8) linear phase codes, a signal-to noise ratio (SNR) power gain of 1.85 dB, 1.9 dB, and 2.4 dB at a bit error rate (BER) of 10-5 over differentially coded minimum-shift keyed (MSK) modulation are obtained, respectively. "This dissertation describes the design and construction of a closed-loop computer controlled expansion system for a cloud simulation chamber. The chamber is used to simulate atmospheric phenomena for the study of microphysical processes. In order to accomplish this, the sample gas inside the chamber must be expanded adiabatically. This means the wall temperature and the gas temperature must be made to agree as closely as possible. The wall is cooled by thermoelectric modules, and the temperature is controlled by analog controllers. "At high data rates, bandwidth is more constraining than transmitting power. Twice the data can be transmitted in a given bandwidth by using quadrature phase-shift keyed (QPSK) modulation schemes as opposed to biphase phase-shift keyed (PSK) systems, with a corresponding factor of two increase in power required for identical bit-error-rate performance. At high data rates intersymbol interference due to media dispersion degrades receiver performance . Other degradation results from interchannel interference, co-channel interference and noise may also be present in typical situations.

"In the design of electronic circuits, both linear and non-linear, one of the goals is the reduction of the number of elements needed to complete the design. By using distributed RC networks a reduction in the number of elements by at least 50% is usually possible. "This dissertation provides theoretical foundations for the state-space analysis and synthesis of linear active RLC networks containing all four types of controlled sources. The analysis portion is concerned with an explicit representation of the state model and the order of complexity of a general linear active RLC network. The problem considered in the synthesis portion is the realization of a given A-matrix with an active nondegenerate RLC-ladder network or an active RLC network without any particular structure.

A state model (A,B,C,D) is obtained from the given transfer function by inspection, where A is a companion matrix. "This paper discusses an algorithm for optimizing the density and parallelism of microcoded routines in micro-programmable machines. Besides presenting the algorithm itself, this research also analyzes the algorithm's uses, design integration problems, architectural requirements, and adaptability to conventional machine characteristics. "The discrete complex Kalman filter is considered as an equalizer for quadrature phase shift keyed (QPSK) systems in the presence of additive noise and intersymbol interference (ISI). For a known linear time-invariant channel with finite duration impulse response, the finite n-dimension complex Kalman filter equalizer is able to reduce the degradation caused by ISI. Previous literature provides for the equivalence of distributed networks with respect to the terminal characteristics. Therefore, the question is whether unique parameter identification is even possible. This work settles that question by presenting the sufficient conditions to insure a unique solution to the parameter identification problem. "The Popov criterion for absolute stability of nonlinear feedback systems is applied to several example problems. Model transformations such as pole shifting and zero shifting extend the class of systems to which the criterion applies. Extensions of the criterion having simple graphical interpretations yield stronger results for systems with constant monotonic slope-bounded nonlinearities. Additional extensions lacking simple graphical interpretations in the complex plane are also demonstrated by example.

"Use of the fast Walsh transform to resolve noisy signals into Walsh function series to digitally implement maximum-likelihood parameter estimators for real-time use is investigated. Realization of estimators which seek a null in the derivative of the log-likelihood function, instead of direct maximization, results in feedback algorithms which yield considerable savings in computation time and storage. Performance of these feedback delay-estimation algorithms is characterized in terms of mean-squared error (MSE) and response to a delay step by Monte Carlo simulation. "A two player zero-sum linear quadratic differential game is investigated for the case in which one of the players has incomplete a priori knowledge of the parameters of his opponent's dynamic system. This incomplete system parameter information game is shown to be playable since the ignorant player can make limiting estimates of the unknown parameters from the relative controllability condition for the game. Performance from the ignorant player's point of view is suboptimal.

The user specifies the register layout of the system and the sequential operation in the form of a diagram on a graphics terminal. "This research is concerned with the optimum and suboptimum ways of providing self bit synchronization for binary overlapping signals. A maximum likelihood synchronizer is derived as the optimum approach. The suboptimum ways are those employing decision-directed feedback and matched derivative filter techniques which are proposed for treating the overlapping signals. Combining the two suboptimum techniques along with the bandlimited version of the overlapping signal, a suboptimum synchronizer is derived. Several techniques exist for the generation of fault detection sequences on combinational and clocked sequential networks. Although these techniques provide closed solutions for combinational and clocked networks, they meet with much less success when used as strategies on asynchronous networks. The system consists of a special purpose Asynchronous Circuit Design Language (ACDL), a translator and a flow table generation algorithm. The language includes many special features which permit quick and precise specification of terminal behavior. "The mean square error between recorded and reproduced signals is used as an error measure to determine the effects of time-base perturbations on an analog singal. The mean square error caused by time-base perturbations is shown to be proportional to the product of the square of the signal bandwidth and the time-base error variance for the case of low pass signal. When the signal is band pass, there is shown to be an additional error term which is proportional to the square of the signal center frequency and the time-base error variance.

"The problem of thermal unit commitment is solved with dynamic programming. A practical example is given which solves the problem for a six generator system over a one year time span. This long range solution is used with a hydro optimization procedure to give an optimized hydro-thermal unit commitment solution. From this, a worth of hydro value is computed for each month, which may be used in the daily dispatching of thermal units and hydro. "A procedure is presented by which it is possible to detect a known signal of unknown delay in a noisy medium contaminated by noise. From the results the characteristics of a sequency digital filter which would be required to remove the noise contamination is indicated. The Walsh functions are discussed and the sequency domain, which is analogous to the continuous frequency domain, is used in the spectral analysis of signals. "The effects of input delay on an identification scheme using a learning model are investigated. The parameter adjustment laws for the learning model are derived through Lyapunov methods similar to those used for the model reference adaptive control systems of Parks.
