Since 2001, 3D microfabrication based on two-photon polymerization (TPP) has drawn extensive attention and interest in biology, optics, photonics, material science, and high-energy physics. The in-volume fabrication capability due to the threshold behavior of two-photon absorption enables TPP higher flexibility compared with other nanofabrication techniques. However, as determined by the in-volume fabrication feature as well as various reaction dynamics, the writing characteristics of TPP, such as throughput, accuracy, surface quality, and fabrication capability, are still limited. Herein, a comprehensive study is performed on the spatiotemporal behavior of reaction dynamics during TPP fabrication, mainly focusing on spatiotemporal characteristics of radical diffusion, …

This study investigates the use of deep learning techniques for building a generalized surrogate model that can accurately and very efficiently predict antenna performance parameters. Notably, we focus on applications where a substantial amount of simulation time is required and prior data is available for deep learning use. Specifically, for these applications, we introduce deep learning models that efficiently and reliably model the near-field of the antenna. These models, in turn, accurately predict far-field properties and essential antenna metrics, such as the reflection coefficient. To demonstrate the efficiency of our method, the widely used rectangular patch antenna is considered, encompassing …

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications
Exciton–polariton condensates, due to their nonlinear and coherent characteristics, have been employed to construct spin Hamiltonian lattices for potentially studying spin glass, critical dephasing, and even solving optimization problems. Here, we report the room-temperature polariton condensation and polaritonic soft-spin XY Hamiltonian lattices in an organic–inorganic halide perovskite microcavity. This is achieved through the direct integration of highquality single-crystal samples within the cavity. The ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic couplings in both one- and two-dimensional condensate lattices have been observed clearly. Our work shows a nonlinear organic–inorganic hybrid perovskite platform for future investigations as polariton simulators.

When the laser was invented in 1960 by Theodore H.Maiman, the potential applications of this apparatus were far from clear. Indeed, even 4 years later, Maiman himself, in an interview with The New York Times, called the laser “a solution seeking a problem.”
Nearly 64 years later, it is safe to say that the laser’s influence on our everyday lives has been nearly beyond measure. Lasers are integral to CD and DVD readers, barcode readers, many computer printers, speed and distance sensors, and in various entertainment systems used in concerts and other events.

A new growth approach, based on the hot-wall metalorganic chemical vapor deposition concept, is developed for high-quality homoepitaxial growth of Si-doped single-crystalline β-Ga2O3 layers on (010)-oriented native substrates. Substrate annealing in argon atmosphere for 1 min at temperatures below 600 oC is proposed for the formation of epi-ready surfaces as a cost-effective alternative to the traditionally employed annealing process in oxygen-containing atmosphere with a time duration of 1 h at about 1000 oC. It is shown that the on-axis rocking curve widths exhibit anisotropic dependence on the azimuth angle with minima for in-plane direction …

Electron effective mass is a fundamental material parameter defining the free charge carrier transport properties, but it is very challenging to be experimentally determined at high temperatures relevant to device operation. In this work, we obtain the electron effective mass parameters in a Si-doped GaN bulk substrate and epitaxial layers from terahertz (THz) and mid-infrared (MIR) optical Hall effect (OHE) measurements in the temperature range of 38–340 K. The OHE data are analyzed using the well-accepted Drude model to account for the free charge carrier contributions. A strong temperature dependence of the electron effective mass parameter in both bulk and …

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Smart Grids are power grid models designed with the idea of including the growing new technologies, from generation to storage devices, and are a response to the growing demands from consumers and the presence of electronic components being commonplace in the modern devices. The design requires a dynamic alternative in order to build an independent grid that can also work in cooperation with other micro-grids and the power grid in an integrated way. Smart-grids present several advantages over the traditional power grid scheme, but the economic costs of the components required to implement smart-grids is currently a great limitation. This …

The anisotropic permittivity parameters of monoclinic single crystal lutetium oxyorthosilicate, Lu2SiO5 (LSO), have been determined in the terahertz spectral range. Using terahertz generalized spectroscopic ellipsometry (THz-GSE), we obtained the THz permittivities along the a, b, and c⋆ crystal directions, which correspond to the εa; εb, and εc? on-diagonal tensor elements. The associated off diagonal tensor element εac? was also determined experimentally, which is required to describe LSO’s optical response in the monoclinic a–c crystallographic plane. From the four tensor elements obtained in the model fit, we calculate the …

An Investigation Of Match For Lossless Video Compression, Brittany Sullivan-Reicks
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
A new lossless video compression technique, Match, is investigated. Match uses the similarity between the frames of a video or the slices of medical images to find a prediction for the current pixel. A portion of the previous frame is searched to find a matching context, which is the pixels surrounding the current pixel, within some distance centered on the current location. The best distance to use for each dataset is found experimentally. The matching context refers to the neighborhood of w, nw, n, and ne, where the pixel in the previous frame with the closest matching context becomes the …

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
This dissertation presents an electronic architecture and methodology capable of processing charge pulses generated by a range of sensors, including radiation detectors and tactile synthetic skin. These sensors output a charge signal proportional to the input stimulus, which is processed electronically in both the analog and digital domains. The presented work implements this functionality using an event-driven methodology, which greatly reduces power consumption compared to standard implementations. This enables new application areas that require a long operating time or compact physical dimensions, which would not otherwise be possible. The architecture is designed, fabricated, and tested in the aforementioned applications to …

Motif-Cluster: A Spatial Clustering Package For Repetitive Motif Binding Patterns, Mengyuan Zhou
School of Computing: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Previous efforts in using genome-wide analysis of transcription factor binding sites (TFBSs) have overlooked the importance of ranking potential significant regulatory regions, especially those with repetitive binding within a local region. Identifying these homogenous binding sites is critical because they have the potential to amplify the binding affinity and regulation activity of transcription factors, impacting gene expression and cellular functions. To address this issue, we developed an open-source tool Motif-Cluster that prioritizes and visualizes transcription factor regulatory regions by incorporating the idea of local motif clusters. Motif-Cluster can rank the significant transcription factor regulatory regions without the need for experimental …

The incorporation of nitrogen (N) atoms into a graphitic network such as graphene (Gr) remains a major challenge. However, even if the insertion mechanisms are not yet fully understood, it is certain that the modification of the electrical properties of Gr is possible according to the configuration adopted. Several simulations work, notably using DFT, have shown that the incorporation of N in Gr can induce an increase in the electrical conductivity and N acts as an electron donor; this increase is linked to the amount of N, the sp2/sp3 carbon configuration, and the nature of C-N bonding. …

Prostate cancer (PCa) is the most common cause of cancer death among African men. The presence of tumor-specific variations in cell-free DNA (cfDNA), such as mutations, microsatellite instability, and DNA methylation, has been explored as a source of biomarkers for cancer diagnosis. In this study, we investigated the diagnostic role of cfDNA among South African PCa patients. We performed whole exome sequencing (WES) of urinary cfDNA. We identified a novel panel of 31 significantly deregulated somatic mutated genes between PCa and benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Additionally, we performed whole-genome sequencing (WGS) on matching PCa and normal prostate tissue in an …

Laser-direct-drive fusion target designs with solid deuterium-tritium (DT) fuel, a high-Z gradient-density pusher shell (GDPS), and a Au-coated foam layer have been investigated through both 1D and 2D radiationhydrodynamic simulations. Compared with conventional low-Z ablators and DT-push-on-DT targets, these GDPS targets possess certain advantages of being instability-resistant implosions that can be high adiabat (α ≽ 8) and low hot-spot and pusher-shell convergence (CRhs ≈22 and CRPS ≈17), and have a low implosion velocity (vimp < 3 × 107 cm/s). Using symmetric drive with laser energies of 1.9 to 2.5 MJ, 1D LILAC simulations of these GDPS implosions can result …

Delirium is a common postoperative complication among older patients with many adverse outcomes. Due to a lack of validated biomarkers, prediction and monitoring of delirium by biological testing is not currently feasible. Circulating proteins in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) may reflect biological processes causing delirium. Our goal was to discover and investigate candidate protein biomarkers in preoperative CSF that were associated with the development of postoperative delirium in older surgical patients. We employed a nested case–control study design coupled with high multiplex affinity proteomics analysis to measure 1305 proteins in preoperative CSF. Twenty-four matched delirium cases and non-delirium controls were selected …

In this study, we propose a computational model that integrates glycolysis, the pentose phosphate pathway (PPP), the fatty acids beta-oxidation, and the tricarboxylic acid cycle (TCA cycle) using queueing theory. The model utilizes literature data on metabolite concentrations and enzyme kinetic constants to calculate the probabilities of individual reactions occurring on a microscopic scale, which can be viewed as the reaction rates on a macroscopic scale. However, it should be noted that the model has some limitations, including not accounting for all the …

Multi-omics has the promise to provide a detailed molecular picture of biological systems. Although obtaining multi-omics data is relatively easy, methods that analyze such data have been lagging. In this paper, we present an algorithm that uses probabilistic graph representations and external knowledge to perform optimal structure learning and deduce a multifarious interaction network for multi-omics data from a bacterial community. Kefir grain, a microbial community that ferments milk and creates kefir, represents a self-renewing, stable, natural microbial community. Kefir has been shown to have a wide range of health benefits. We obtained a controlled bacterial community using the two …

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
This dissertation presents the design of a novel radiation detection and identification system that can operate continuously over a period of 8 days while detecting at 30,000 counts per second, consuming a total of 11 mW. The entire system is highly integrated, containing a gamma ray detector, a high voltage detector power supply, and a multichannel analyzer (MCA) system-on-a-chip (SoC), which are all combined into a compact form using a multi-level, configurable printed circuit board design. The MCA SoC, fabricated using a 65 nm CMOS technology, features two enabling resources to allow low power detections at high count rates for …

The advanced modeling and estimation of overall system dynamics play a vital role in electric vehicles (EVs), as the selection of components in the powertrain and prediction of performance are the key market qualifiers. The state-space averaged model and small-signal transfer function model are useful for assessing long-term behavior in system-level analysis and for designing the controller parameters, respectively. Both models take less computation time but ignore the high-frequency switching dynamics. Therefore, these two models could be impractical for the development and testing of EV prototypes. On the other hand, the multi-domain model in available simulation tools gives in-depth information …

We present results from a small-scale randomized controlled trial that evaluates the impact of just-in-time interventions on the academic outcomes of N = 65 undergraduate students in a STEM course. Intervention messaging content was based on machine learning forecasting models of data collected from 537 students in the same course over the preceding 3 years. Trial results show that the intervention produced a statistically significant increase in the proportion of students that achieved a passing grade. The outcomes point to the potential and promise of just-in-time interventions for STEM learning and the need for larger fully-powered randomized controlled trials.
