Recurrent Neural Networks Based Impedance Measurement Technique For Power Electronic Systems, Peng Xiao, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy, Keith Corzine, Jing Huang

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

When designing and building power systems that contain power electronic switching sources and loads, system integrators must consider the frequency-dependent impedance characteristics at an interface to ensure system stability. Stability criteria have been developed in terms of source and load impedance, and it is often necessary to measure system impedance through experiments. Traditional injection-based impedance measurement techniques require multiple online testing that lead to many disadvantages, including prolonged test time, operating point variations, and impedance values at limited frequency points. The impedance identification method proposed in this paper greatly reduces online testing time by modeling the system with recurrent neural …

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Frequency-dependent causal RLGC(f) models are proposed for single-ended and coupled transmission lines. Dielectric loss, dielectric dispersion, and skin-effect loss are taken into account. The dielectric substrate is described by the two-term Debye frequency dependence, and the transmission line conductors are of finite conductivity. In this paper, three frequency-dependent RLGC models are studied. One is the known frequency-dependent analytical RLGC model ( RLGC-I), the second is the RLGC(f) model (RLGC-II) proposed in this paper, and the third (RLGC-III) is same as the RLGC -II, but with causality enforced by the Hilbert transform in frequency domain. The causalities of the three RLGC …

Reducing Common-Mode Voltage In Three-Phase Sine-Triangle Pwm With Interleaved Carriers, Jonathan W. Kimball, Maciej Jan Zawodniok Feb 2010

Reducing Common-Mode Voltage In Three-Phase Sine-Triangle Pwm With Interleaved Carriers, Jonathan W. Kimball, Maciej Jan Zawodniok

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Interleaving PWM waveforms is a proven method to reduce ripple in dc-dc converters. The present work explores interleaving for three-phase motor drives. Fourier analysis shows that interleaving the carriers in conventional uniform PWM significantly reduces the common-mode voltage. New DSP hardware supports interleaving directly with changes to just two registers at setup time, so no additional computation time is needed during operation. The common-mode voltage reduction ranges from 36% at full modulation to 67% when idling with zero modulation. Third harmonic injection slightly reduces the advantage (to 26% at full modulation). However, the maximum RMS common-mode voltage is still less …

A Novel Approach To Interarea Oscillation Damping By Unified Power Flow Controllers Utilizing Ultracapacitors, Mahyar Zarghami, Mariesa Crow, Jagannathan Sarangapani, Yilu Liu, Stan Atcitty

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper discusses a novel approach for damping interarea oscillations in a bulk power network using multiple unified power flow controllers (UPFCs) utilizing ultracapacitors, also known more generally as electrochemical capacitors (ECs). In this paper, a new control is introduced to mitigate interarea oscillations by directly controlling the UPFCs' sending and receiving bus voltages that better utilizes the stored energy in the ECs. The results of this controller are compared with and without ECs. The proposed control provides better interarea oscillation mitigation when applied to multiple UPFCs in the 118-bus IEEE test system.

Novel Dynamic Representation And Control Of Power Systems With Facts Devices, Shahab Mehraeen, Jagannathan Sarangapani, Mariesa Crow

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

FACTS devices have been shown to be useful in damping power system oscillations. However, in large power systems, the FACTS control design is complex due to the combination of differential and algebraic equations required to model the power system. In this paper, a new method to generate a nonlinear dynamic representation of the power network is introduced to enable more sophisticated control design. Once the new representation is obtained, a back stepping methodology for the UPFC is utilized to mitigate the generator oscillations. Finally, the neural network approximation property is utilized to relax the need for knowledge of the power …

The concept of multiple swarms is incorporated into the MDPSO algorithm to form a robust multiple swarms-modified particle swarm optimization (MS-MDPSO) algorithm and applied to solving the GMS problem on two power systems. Heuristic methods are proposed to circumvent the problems of imposed non-smooth assumptions common with the classical approaches in solving …

High Temperature Tolerant Optical Fiber Inline Microsensors By Laser Fabrication, Tao Wei Jan 2010

High Temperature Tolerant Optical Fiber Inline Microsensors By Laser Fabrication, Tao Wei

Doctoral Dissertations

"Fiber sensors are particularly attractive for harsh environment defined by high temperature, high pressure, corrosive/erosive, and strong electromagnetic interference, where conventional electronic sensors do not have a chance to survive. However, the key issue has been the robustness of the sensor probe (not the fiber itself) mostly due to the problems stemmed from the traditional assembly based approaches used to construct fiber optic sensors. For example, at high temperatures (e.g., above 500°C), the thermal expansion coefficient mismatch between different composited parts has a high chance to lead to sensors' malfunction by breaking the sensor as a result of the excessive …

Development Of Embedded Modulated Scatterer Technique: Single- And Dual-Loaded Scatterers, Kristen M. Donnell Jan 2010

Development Of Embedded Modulated Scatterer Technique: Single- And Dual-Loaded Scatterers, Kristen M. Donnell

Doctoral Dissertations

"Health monitoring of infrastructure is an important ongoing issue. Therefore, it is important that a cost-effective and practical method for evaluating complex composite structures be developed. A promising microwave-based embedded sensor technology is developed based on the Modulated Scatterer Technique (MST). MST is based on illuminating a probe, commonly a dipole antenna loaded with a PIN diode (also referred to as a single-loaded scatterer, or SLS), with an electromagnetic wave. This impinging wave induces a current along the scatterer length, which causes a scattered field to be reradiated. Modulating the PIN diode also modulates the signal scattered by the probe, …

Advanced Dynamic Response Improvement Methods For Dc-Dc Power Electronic Converters, Lisheng Shi Jan 2010

Advanced Dynamic Response Improvement Methods For Dc-Dc Power Electronic Converters, Lisheng Shi

Doctoral Dissertations

"Dc-dc power electronic converters supplying electric power to digital processors, data centers, and telecommunication systems are required to exhibit a fast dynamic response in response to their instantaneous electric load variations. This requirement is becoming more and more stringent as the operating voltage of such loads is continuously reducing. This voltage level reduction has reached a point where conventional control approaches can barely meet the dynamic response demanded by such loads. In order to overcome this issue, several approaches focusing on the dynamic response improvement for dc-dc converters have been proposed in the literature. Unfortunately, most of them have at …

Excitation Of Whispering Gallery Modes In Glass Microspheres Using Optical Fiber Couplers, Sudha Sneha Devarakonda

Masters Theses

"This research is a study conducted on the excitation of whispering gallery modes (WGM) in small micron-scale glass spheres. Optical WGM may be represented by a light wave that propagates along the surface of the sphere and reaches back itself in phase at specific wavelengths. Due to this, very high intensities of light with narrow line widths circulate in the microspheres contributing to high Q factor. The evanescent field of an optical waveguide is used to resonantly stimulate the WGM.

The WGM excitation in fused silica spheres was demonstrated in the laboratory with 60% coupling efficiency. Tapered optical fibers were …

Full Wave Simulation Of An Electrostatic Discharge Generator Discharging In Air Discharge Mode Into A Product And Quantify Channel Performance Utilizing Novel Time Domain Convolution Method, Dazhao Liu

Masters Theses

"In the first section, it introduces a methodology to simulate the currents and fields during an air discharge ESD into a product by combining a linear description of the behavior of the DUT with a non-linear arc resistance equation. The most commonly used test standard IEC 61000-4-2 requires using contact mode discharges to metallic surfaces and air discharge mode to non-conducting surfaces. In contact mode, an Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) generator is a linear system. In air discharge mode, a highly non-linear arc is part of the current loop. This paper proposes a method that combines the linear ESD generator full …

Quantification Of Channel Performance And Development And Characterization Of Small Magnetic Field Probes, Surbhi Mittal Jan 2010

Quantification Of Channel Performance And Development And Characterization Of Small Magnetic Field Probes, Surbhi Mittal

Masters Theses

"This thesis presents a new approach to quantifying channel performance using a transmitter waveform and dispersion penalty (TWDP) with frequency domain S-parameter data. Initially TWDP was defined to characterize the performance of a transmitter in optical links. More recently its use has been extended to include the quantification of channel performance, especially in high-speed copper links. This project focused mainly on channel characterization. Instead of using the time-domain oscilloscope measurements involved in the original approach, it proposes a new method that relies on frequency-domain S-parameter data obtained either from measurements or simulations. It included a parametric study of TWDP with …

Modeling And Analysis Of High-Speed Sources And Serial Links For Signal Integrity, Siming Pan Jan 2010

Modeling And Analysis Of High-Speed Sources And Serial Links For Signal Integrity, Siming Pan

Masters Theses

"As the computer and electronics industry moves towards higher data rates, signal integrity and electromagnetic interference (EMI) problems always present challenges for designers for high-speed data communication systems. To characterize the entire link path between transmitters and receivers, accurate models for sources, passive link path (such as traces, vias, connectors, etc), and terminations should be built before simulations either in frequency or time domain. Due to the imperfection of model, data corrections are preferred before time-domain simulations to ensure stability. Moreover, data obtained from models should be compared with measurement results to judge the level of agreement for validations. This …

Time-Domain Thru-Reflect-Line (Trl) Calibration Error Assessment And Its Mitigation And Modeling Of Multilayer Printed Circuit Boards (Pcb) With Complex Area Fills, Vysakh Sivarajan Jan 2010

Time-Domain Thru-Reflect-Line (Trl) Calibration Error Assessment And Its Mitigation And Modeling Of Multilayer Printed Circuit Boards (Pcb) With Complex Area Fills, Vysakh Sivarajan

Masters Theses

"Part 1 for this thesis is on the error assessment of a time-domain (t-TRL) calibration technique. Application of the "Thru-Reflect-Line" (TRL) calibration to time-domain measurements of S-parameters (t-TRL) can be used for the characterization of the printed circuit boards (PCBs). However, t-TRL calibrated results still have deviations from the reference frequency-domain vector network analyzer (VNA) calibrated results. There are two main sources of errors in the t-TRL calibration. They are random errors, such as an additive noise and jitter, and systematic errors associated with cables, connectors, and port mismatches. This work addresses these two types of errors by proper selection …
