This work presents a case study, which attempts to improve the fault diagnosis and testability of the oscillation testing methodology applied to a typical two-stage CMOS operational amplifier. The proposed test method takes the advantage of good fault coverage through the use of a simple oscillation based test technique, which needs no test signal generation and combines it with quiescent supply current (IDDQ) testing to provide a fault confirmation. This work presents IDDQ testing of a CMOS first order sigma-delta modulator of an 8-bit oversampling analog-to-digital converter using a built-in current sensor [BICS]. Gate-drain, source-drain, gate-source and gate-substrate bridging faults are injected using fault injection transistors. All the four faults cause varying fault currents and are successfully detected by the BICS at a good operation speed. The BICS have a negligible impact on the performance of the modulator and an external pin is provided to completely cut-off the BICS from the modulator. In this thesis, I present a design of a small, self-contained, underwater plankton imaging system. I base the imaging system’s design on an embedded PC architecture based on PC/104-Plus standards to meet the compact size and low power requirements. I developed a simple graphical user interface to run on a real-time operating system to control the imaging system. I also address how a real-time image compression scheme implemented on an FPGA chip speeds up image transfer speeds of the imaging system. Semiconductor feature size continues to decrease permitting superscalar microprocessors to continue to increase the number of functional units available for execution. As the instruction issue width increases beyond the five instruction average basic block size of integer programs, more than one basic block must be issued per cycle to continue to increase instructions per cycle (IPC) performance. We report a new architecture for a sigma-delta oversampling analog-to-digital converter (ADC) in which the first order modulator is realized using the floating gate MOSFETs at the input stage of an integrator and the comparator. The first order modulator is designed using an 8 MHz sampling clock frequency and implemented in a standard 1.5µm n-well CMOS process. The decimator is an off-chip sinc-filter and is programmed using the VERILOG and tested with Altera Flex EPF10K70RC240 FPGA board. The ADC gives an 8-bit resolution with a 65 kHz bandwidth.

This thesis introduces the use of decimal sequences in watermarking to hide information for authentication. The underlying system is based on code division multiple access (CDMA), which is a form of spread spectrum communication. Different algorithms for the use of decimal sequences have been formulated for use in black and white images. Channel equalization has been extensively studied as a method of combating ISI and ICI for high speed MIMO data communication systems. This dissertation focuses on optimal channel equalization in the presence of non-white observation noises with unknown PSD but bounded power-norm. A worst-case approach to optimal design of channel equalizers leads to an equivalent optimal H-infinity filtering problem for the MIMO communication systems. An explicit design algorithm is derived which not only achieves the zero-forcing (ZF) condition, but also minimizes the RMS error between the transmitted symbols and the received symbols. Dynamically reconfigurable architectures have the ability to change their structure at each step of a computation. This dissertation studies various aspects of implementing dynamic reconfiguration, ranging from hardware building blocks and low-level architectures to modeling issues and high-level algorithm design. First we derive conditions under which classes of communication sets can be optimally scheduled on the circuit-switched tree (CST). Then we present a method to configure the CST to perform in constant time all communications scheduled for a step. The latter case with wires protruding out of the body can be unaesthetic in appearance and can cause infection. In this research, we consider an alternative way to power a bio-implantable microsystem. It involves using rechargeable lithium batteries. This thesis implements an adaptive linear smoothing image filtering algorithm, on a Virtex™-E FPGA using run-time reconfiguration (RTR). An adaptive filter uses a filtering window that runs over the entire image pixel-by-pixel, generating new (filtered) values of the pixels. As the name suggests, an adaptive filter can adapt to the varying nature of an image by adjusting the coefficients of the filtering window depending upon the local variance in the intensity values of pixels. CDMA systems employ Walsh-Hadamard orthogonal codes, jointly with Pseudo-Noise (PN) sequences, Gold sequences and Kasami sequences to achieve spreading. This thesis investigates properties of generalized d-sequences and their applications as spreading sequences in CDMA systems. The correlation properties of these sequences are studied. Resonant harmonic filters (RHFs), are the most common devices installed in distribution systems for reducing distortion caused by harmonic generating loads. When such filters are applied in systems with a distorted distribution voltage their effectiveness may decline drastically. This dissertation explores the causes of degradation of RHFs effectiveness and suggests methods of their improvement both by optimization algorithms and by modification of the filter structure. Filterbank transceivers are widely employed in data communication networks to cope with inter-symbol-interference (ISI) through the use of redundancies. This dissertation studies the design of the optimal channel equalizer for both time-invariant and time-varying channels, and wide-sense stationary (WSS) and possible non-stationary white noise processes. Channel equalization is investigated via the filterbank transceivers approach. All perfect reconstruction (PR) or zero-forcing (ZF) receiver filterbanks are parameterized in an affine form, which eliminate completely the ISI. First, we consider makespan minimization for vehicle scheduling problems on trees with release and handling times. 2-approximation algorithms were known for several variants of the single vehicle problem on a path. A 3/2-approximation algorithm was known for the single vehicle problem on a path where there is a fixed starting point and the vehicle must return to the starting point upon completion. The linear convolution of two N-point sequences can be computed by the cyclic convolution of the following 2N-point sequences. The original sequence padded with N zero’s each.
