Photoluminescence Of Beryllium-Related Defects In Gallium Nitride, Mykhailo Vorobiov, Mykhailo Vorobiov
Photoluminescence Of Beryllium-Related Defects In Gallium Nitride, Mykhailo Vorobiov, Mykhailo Vorobiov
Theses and Dissertations
This study explores the potential of beryllium (Be) as an alternative dopant to magnesium (Mg) for achieving higher hole concentrations in gallium nitride (GaN). Despite Mg prominence as an acceptor in optoelectronic and high-power devices, its deep acceptor level at 0.22 eV above the valence band limits its effectiveness. By examining Be, this research aims to pave the way to overcoming these limitations and extend the findings to aluminum nitride and aluminum gallium nitride (AlGaN) alloy. Key contributions of this work include. i)Identification of three Be-related luminescence bands in GaN through photoluminescence spectroscopy, improving the understanding needed for further material …
Magnetotransport Properties Of Dirac Semimetal Taco2te2 And Ferromagnetic Weyl Semimetal Co3sn2s2, Samuel Pate
Magnetotransport Properties Of Dirac Semimetal Taco2te2 And Ferromagnetic Weyl Semimetal Co3sn2s2, Samuel Pate
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
This dissertation investigates the magnetotransport properties of topological semimetals, specifically focusing on the Dirac semimetal TaCo2Te2 and the Weyl semimetal Co3Sn2S2. In TaCo2Te2, I observed extremely large magnetoresistance that violates Kohler’s rule. Extended Kohler’s rule can be applied with a calculation of Hall factor at low temperatures. I also explored the applicability of the two-band and four-band models of carrier analysis and correlate the region where Kohler’s rule is obeyed to the four-band model. In Co3Sn2S2, I explored the angle-dependent anomalous Hall effect (AHE) near the Kagome plane, revealing a tunable AHE under applied fields and an abrupt disappearance of …

Estimation Of Methyl Orange Dye's Molar Absorptivity Using A Photoresistor-Based Photometer, Patricia M. Ludovice, Ramon M. Delos Santos
Physics Faculty Publications
The need to further develop solar cell technology, particularly on dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs), drives absorption studies of various chemical species. In this study, absorbance analysis of methyl orange (MO) dye was performed using the adapted and modified photoresistor-based photometer of Adams-McNichol et al. [1]. The research aims to improve the stability of the reference setup, while maintaining the accuracy of absorbance results it yields. The methodology includes photometer fabrication, MO dye sample preparation, and the evaluation of MO dye's molar absorptivity in an aqueous solution. Results show that the estimated molar absorptivity of MO using the voltage readings from …

We will describe spin-transparent storage rings that exhibit spin-coherence times of several hours and store a large number of particles and their use in novel applications. For example, these rings can be used to directly measure the electric dipole moment of the electron, relevant to CP violation and matter-antimatter asymmetry in the universe, and to search for dark energy and ultra-light dark matter*. These rings can also serve as a compelling platform for quantum computing. In this presentation, we will describe how spin-transparent rings can be used in conjunction with ion traps to enhance scalability and increase quantum coherence times …

Accelerating Cavity Fault Prediction Using Deep Learning At Jefferson Laboratory, Md M. Rahman, A. Carpenter, K. Iftekharuddin, C. Tennant
Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications
Accelerating cavities are an integral part of the continuous electron beam accelerator facility (CEBAF) at Jefferson Laboratory. When any of the over 400 cavities in CEBAF experiences a fault, it disrupts beam delivery to experimental user halls. In this study, we propose the use of a deep learning model to predict slowly developing cavity faults. By utilizing pre-fault signals, we train a long short-term memory-convolutional neural network binary classifier to distinguish between radio-frequency (RF) signals during normal operation and RF signals indicative of impending faults. We optimize the model by adjusting the fault confidence threshold and implementing a multiple consecutive …

Superlattice GaAs photocathodes play a crucial role as the primary source of polarized electrons in various accelerator facilities, including the Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility (CEBAF) at Jefferson National Laboratory and the Electron-Ion Collider (EIC) at Brookhaven National Laboratory. To increase the quantum efficiency (QE) of GaAs/GaAsP superlattice photocathodes, a Distributed Bragg Reflector (DBR) is grown underneath using metal-organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD). There are several challenges associated with DBR photocathodes: the resonance peak may not align with the emission threshold of around 780 nm, non-uniform doping density in the top 5 nm may significantly impact QE and spin polarization, …

The Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility (CEBAF) operates hundreds of superconducting radio frequency (SRF) cavities in its two linear accelerators (linacs). Field emission (FE) is an ongoing operational challenge in higher gradient SRF cavities. FE generates high levels of neutron and gamma radiation leading to damaged accelerator hardware and a radiation hazard environment. During machine development periods, we performed invasive gradient scans to record data capturing the relationship between cavity gradients and radiation levels measured throughout the linacs. However, the field emission environment at CEBAF varies considerably over time as the configuration of the radio-frequency (RF) gradients changes or due …

Niobium films are a key component in modern two-dimensional superconducting qubits, yet their contribution to the total qubit decay rate is not fully understood. The presence of different layers of materials and interfaces makes it difficult to identify the dominant loss channels in present two-dimensional qubit designs. In this paper, we present the study that directly correlates measurements of RF losses in such films to material parameters by investigating a high-power impulse magnetron sputtered (HiPIMS) film atop a three-dimensional niobium superconducting radio frequency (SRF) resonator. By using a 3D SRF structure, we are able to isolate the niobium film loss …

Controlled Manipulation And Transport By Microswimmers In Stokes Flows, Jake Buzhardt
All Dissertations
Remotely actuated microscale swimming robots have the potential to revolutionize many aspects of biomedicine. However, for the longterm goals of this field of research to be achievable, it is necessary to develop modelling, simulation, and control strategies which effectively and efficiently account for not only the motion of individual swimmers, but also the complex interactions of such swimmers with their environment including other nearby swimmers, boundaries, other cargo and passive particles, and the fluid medium itself. The aim of this thesis is to study these problems in simulation from the perspective of controls and dynamical systems, with a particular focus …
Modeling And Analysis Of The Selective Lightning Strike Phenomenon At Locations In A Chemical Manufacturing Plant, Terver Maor
Modeling And Analysis Of The Selective Lightning Strike Phenomenon At Locations In A Chemical Manufacturing Plant, Terver Maor
Doctoral Dissertations
This research was motivated by the overly simplified claims, from a previous study, that attempted to explain the cause of the reportedly repeated lightning strikes at certain locations in the chemical manufacturing plant. The findings, without any model, claimed that the electronic monitoring and control devices’ fire damage occurred, due to the raised electrical ground potential during lightning strikes. It proceeded that the raised electrical ground potential caused a power flow reversal, which exceeded the ratings of the affected electronic control modules, damaging them. This claim is inconsistent with published research work in the failure mechanisms of industrial control systems, …

We provide an in-depth analysis of noise considerations in coherent imaging, accounting for speckle and scintillation in addition to “conventional” image noise. Specifically, we formulate closed-form expressions for total effective noise in the presence of speckle only, scintillation only, and speckle combined with scintillation. We find analytically that photon shot noise is uncorrelated with both speckle and weak-to-moderate scintillation, despite their shared dependence on the mean signal. Furthermore, unmitigated speckle and scintillation noise tends to dominate coherent-imaging performance due to a squared mean-signal dependence. Strong coupling occurs between speckle and scintillation when both are present, and we characterize this behavior …

Microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) resonators use is widespread, from electronic filters and oscillators to physical sensors such as accelerometers and gyroscopes. These devices' ubiquity, small size, and low power consumption make them ideal for use in systems such as CubeSats, micro aerial vehicles, autonomous underwater vehicles, and micro-robots operating in radiation environments. Radiation's interaction with materials manifests as atomic displacement and ionization, resulting in mechanical and electronic property changes, photocurrents, and charge buildup. This study examines silicon (Si) ion irradiation's interaction with piezoelectrically transduced MEMS resonators. Furthermore, the effect of adding a dielectric silicon oxide (SiO2) thin film is …

Germanium films were grown on c-plane sapphire with a 10 nm AlAs buffer layer using molecular beam epitaxy. The effects of Ge film thickness on the surface morphology and crystal structure were investigated using ex situ characterization techniques. The nucleation of Ge proceeds by forming (111) oriented three-dimensional islands with two rotational twin domains about the growth axis. The boundaries between the twin grains are the origin of the 0.2% strain and tilt grains. The transition to a single-grain orientation reduces the strain and results in a better-quality Ge buffer. Understanding the role of thickness on material quality during the …

We examine the electromagnetic emission from two photo-illuminated linear arrays composed of inductively charged superconducting ring elements. The arrays are illuminated by an ultrafast infrared laser that triggers microwave broadband emission detected in the 1–26 GHz range. Based on constructive interference from the arrays a narrowing of the forward radiation lobe is observed with increasing element count and frequency demonstrating directed GHz emission. Results suggest that higher frequencies and a larger number of elements are achievable leading to a unique pulsed array emitter concept that can span frequencies from the microwave to the terahertz (THz) regime.

A Radial Basis Function Neural Network Algorithm For The Simultaneous Retrieval Of Two Meteorological Parameters From Solar Radiation, Nicholas W. Nzala, Nicolausi Ssebiyonga, Dennis Muyimbwa, Taddeo Ssenyonga
Tanzania Journal of Science
Local meteorological parameters are key in understanding the frequency of occurrence of extreme weather conditions such as floods, and droughts, among others. In this study, we present a method for simultaneous retrieval of two weather parameters. The method is based on already measured monthly average values of weather parameters from 2011 to 2016, which were used to train a Feed-forward radial basis function neural network (RBFNN) to obtain a fast and accurate method to compute global solar radiation for specified weather parameters pair. In inverse modelling, a multidimensional unconstrained non-linear optimization was employed to retrieve the weather parameters pair. The …

Trumpet Directivity From A Rotating Semicircular Array, Samuel D. Bellows, Joseph E. Avila, Timothy W. Leishman
Directivity
The directivity function of a played musical instrument describes the angular dependence of its acoustic radiation and diffraction about the instrument, musician, and musician’s chair. Directivity influences sound in rehearsal, performance, and recording environments and signals in audio systems. Because high-resolution, spherically comprehensive measurements of played musical instruments have been unavailable in the past, the authors have undertaken research to produce and share such data for studies of musical instruments, simulations of acoustical environments, optimizations of microphone placements, and other applications. The authors acquired the data from repeated chromatic scales produced by a trumpet played at mezzo-forte in an anechoic …

Brdf Measurements And Physical Optics Modeling Applied To Anisotropic Satellite Solar Cells, Madilynn E. Compean
Theses and Dissertations
Light curve analysis is often used to discern information about satellites in geosynchronous orbits, and since solar panels comprise relatively large surface areas, their reflected energy can contribute greatly to observed light curves. Data was collected using a space qualified solar cell interrogated by a green HeNe laser. The data validated certain aspects from previous work, but also identified multi-slit behavior, showed that the specular term was a second diffraction pattern, and diagnosed the out-of-plane diffraction curvature as the conical diffraction phenomenon. Two physical-optics-based models were developed to incorporate these new features and better predict solar cell BRDF solely from …

Atmospheric Propagation Of Qubits: Laboratory Experiments To Field Demonstrations, Keith A. Wyman
Theses and Dissertations
Free-space quantum networks can enable global-scale quantum communication via satellite-based nodes and quantum ground transceivers. To enable building of robust global quantum networks, it is critical to learn how the state of the qubit is transformed while propagating through the atmosphere. With such an overarching goal, we built a laboratory based atmospheric turbulence simulator (ATS) to characterize the effects of atmospheric turbulence on an entangled pair of photons as a function of statistical quantities such as the Fried parameter or scintillation index for long-distance communication. Specifically, the changes in the statistical properties associated with a quantum source was investigated using …

Boundary Integral Equation Methods For Superhydrophobic Flow And Integrated Photonics, Kosuke Sugita
Dissertations
This dissertation presents fast integral equation methods (FIEMs) for solving two important problems encountered in practical engineering applications.
The first problem involves the mixed boundary value problem in two-dimensional Stokes flow, which appears commonly in computational fluid mechanics. This problem is particularly relevant to the design of microfluidic devices, especially those involving superhydrophobic (SH) flows over surfaces made of composite solid materials with alternating solid portions, grooves, or air pockets, leading to enhanced slip.
The second problem addresses waveguide devices in two dimensions, governed by the Helmholtz equation with Dirichlet conditions imposed on the boundary. This problem serves as a …

Theoretical Analysis Of Charge Conduction And Rectification In Self-Assembled-Monolayers In Molecular Junctions, Francis Adoah
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
As electrical devices shrink to the atomic scale, it is expected that Moore's law will soon be obsolete for semiconductor devices. In 1974, Avriam and Ratner predicted that organic devices could replace semiconductor technology, leading to extensive research on molecular-based organic devices. This dissertation delves into the theoretical frameworks used to examine the transport in molecular junctions and aims to enhance our comprehension of charge transport and conduction properties. The studies presented in this thesis illustrates that a molecule's alteration by just a single atom can change it from an insulator to a conductor, and also that, by fine-tuning the …

Spectral Broadening Effects On Pulsed-Source Digital Holography, Steven A. Owens, Mark F. Spencer, Glen P. Perram
Faculty Publications
Using a pulsed configuration, a digital-holographic system is setup in the off-axis image plane recording geometry, and spectral broadening via pseudo-random bit sequence is used to degrade the temporal coherence of the master-oscillator laser. The associated effects on the signal-to-noise ratio are then measured in terms of the ambiguity and coherence efficiencies. It is found that the ambiguity efficiency, which is a function of signal-reference pulse overlap, is not affected by the effects of spectral broadening. The coherence efficiency, on the other hand, is affected. As a result, the coherence efficiency, which is a function of effective fringe visibility, is …

Study Of Radiation Effects In Gan-Based Devices, Han Gao
Electrical Engineering Theses and Dissertations
Radiation tolerance of wide-bandgap Gallium Nitride (GaN) high-electron-mobility transistors (HEMT) has been studied, including X-ray-induced TID effects, heavy-ion-induced single event effects, and neutron-induced single event effects. Threshold voltage shift is observed in X-ray irradiation experiments, which recovers over time, indicating no permanent damage formed inside the device. Heavy-ion radiation effects in GaN HEMTs have been studied as a function of bias voltage, ion LET, radiation flux, and total fluence. A statistically significant amount of heavy-ion-induced gate dielectric degradation was observed, which consisted of hard breakdown and soft breakdown. Specific critical injection level experiments were designed and carried out to explore …

In this work, we investigate a class of planar photonic structures operating as passive thermoregulators. The radiative cooling process is adjusted through the incorporation of a phase change material (Vanadium Dioxide, VO2) in conjunction with a layer of transparent conductive oxide (Aluminum-doped Zinc Oxide, AZO). VO2 is known to undergo a phase transition from the “dielectric” phase to the “plasmonic” or “metallic” phase at a critical temperature close to 68°C. In addition, AZO shows plasmonic properties at the long-wave infrared spectrum, which, combined with VO2, provides a rich platform to achieve low reflections across the …
