Automated Dynamic Detection Of Self-Hiding Behaviors, Luke Baird
Automated Dynamic Detection Of Self-Hiding Behaviors, Luke Baird
Student Works
Certain Android applications, such as but not limited to malware, conceal their presence from the user, exhibiting a self-hiding behavior. Consequently, these apps put the user’s security and privacy at risk by performing tasks without the user’s awareness. Static analysis has been used to analyze apps for self-hiding behavior, but this approach is prone to false positives and suffers from code obfuscation. This research proposes a set of three tools utilizing a dynamic analysis method of detecting self-hiding behavior of an app in the home, installed, and running application lists on an Android emulator. Our approach proves both highly accurate …
Automated Dynamic Detection Of Self-Hiding Behavior In Android Apps, Luke Baird, Seth Rodgers
Automated Dynamic Detection Of Self-Hiding Behavior In Android Apps, Luke Baird, Seth Rodgers
Student Works
Android applications that conceal themselves from a user, defined as exhibiting a “self-hiding behavior,” pose a threat to the user’s privacy, as these applications can live on a device undetected by the user. Malicious applications can do this to execute without being found by the user. Three lists are analyzed in particular—the home, running, and installed lists—as they are directly related to the typical Android app life cycle. Additionally, self-hiding behavior in the device admin list is analyzed due to the potential for catastrophic actions to be taken by device admin malware. This research proposes four dynamic analysis tools that …

Secure And Efficient Bft Consensus For Blockchains, Mohammad Mussadiq Jalalzai
Secure And Efficient Bft Consensus For Blockchains, Mohammad Mussadiq Jalalzai
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Blockchains are simple data structures, containing transactions organized into blocks, in which each block points to a previous block using its hash. Thus, by following the chain, we can follow the history of transactions. Blocks are added to the chain through a consensus mechanism. Byzantine Fault Tolerant (BFT) consensus protocols that were designed before blockchains were introduced are usually considered appropriate for use in small scale networks of size 10-20 replicas. Blockchains have changed this trend as the blockchain networks usually require a larger number of replicas and classic BFT protocols cannot provide acceptable performance in large networks. One of …

Public Blockchain Scalability: Advancements, Challenges And The Future, Amritraj .
Public Blockchain Scalability: Advancements, Challenges And The Future, Amritraj .
Master of Science in Software Engineering Theses
In the last decade, blockchain has emerged as one of the most influential innovations in software architecture and technology. Ideally, blockchains are designed to be architecturally and politically decentralized, similar to the Internet. But recently, public and permissionless blockchains such as Bitcoin and Ethereum have faced stumbling blocks in the form of scalability. Both Bitcoin and Ethereum process fewer than 20 transactions per second, which is significantly lower than their centralized counterpart such as VISA that can process approximately 1,700 transactions per second. In realizing this hindrance in the wide range adoption of blockchains for building advanced and large scalable …
A Grammar Based Approach To Distributed Systems Fault Diagnosis Using Log Files, Stephen Hanka
A Grammar Based Approach To Distributed Systems Fault Diagnosis Using Log Files, Stephen Hanka
Computer Science and Engineering Theses and Dissertations
Diagnosing and correcting failures in complex, distributed systems is difficult. In a network of perhaps dozens of nodes, each of which is executing dozens of interacting applications, sometimes from different suppliers or vendors, finding the source of a system failure is a confusing, tedious piece of detective work. The person assigned this task must trace the failing command, event, or operation through the network components and find a deviation from the correct, desired interaction sequence. After a deviation is identified, the failing applications must be found, and the fault or faults traced to the incorrect source code.
Often the primary …

The virtualization of physical networks is used to help achieve this goal, but with the creation of Virtual Networks, systems must be designed to create, manage, and secure them. A Virtual Network Architecture is the system design for creating and maintaining virtual network components and the resulting networks they create. Different companies design different Virtual Network Architectures, …
Automation Of Post-Earthquake Civil Infrastructure Reconnaissance, Jack Bergquist
Automation Of Post-Earthquake Civil Infrastructure Reconnaissance, Jack Bergquist
Architectural Engineering
Traditionally post-earthquake structural engineering reconnaissance consists of a team of experts who are deployed to the field to record and capture earthquake damage data, which is later uploaded into online repositories. Despite many advances to these data archives in recent years, the entries in online repositories often have limited metadata which make it difficult and time consuming to extract specific damage evidence that can be used for meaningful analysis. This report outlines the author’s contributions to overcoming these challenges via the development of a neural network that automatically filters and classifies post-earthquake civil infrastructure damage data after a seismic event. …

Vehicle Pseudonym Association Attack Model, Pierson Yieh
Vehicle Pseudonym Association Attack Model, Pierson Yieh
Master's Theses
With recent advances in technology, Vehicular Ad-hoc Networks (VANETs) have grown in application. One of these areas of application is Vehicle Safety Communication (VSC) technology. VSC technology allows for vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) and vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) communications that enhance vehicle safety and driving experience. However, these newly developing technologies bring with them a concern for the vehicular privacy of drivers. Vehicles already employ the use of pseudonyms, unique identifiers used with signal messages for a limited period of time, to prevent long term tracking. But can attackers still attack vehicular privacy even when vehicles employ a pseudonym change strategy? The major contribution …

Comparative Study Of Deep Learning Models For Network Intrusion Detection, Brian Lee, Sandhya Amaresh, Clifford Green, Daniel Engels
SMU Data Science Review
In this paper, we present a comparative evaluation of deep learning approaches to network intrusion detection. A Network Intrusion Detection System (NIDS) is a critical component of every Internet connected system due to likely attacks from both external and internal sources. A NIDS is used to detect network born attacks such as Denial of Service (DoS) attacks, malware replication, and intruders that are operating within the system. Multiple deep learning approaches have been proposed for intrusion detection systems. We evaluate three models, a vanilla deep neural net (DNN), self-taught learning (STL) approach, and Recurrent Neural Network (RNN) based Long Short …

Skylux Smartphone Controlled Skylight, James A. Green Vi
Computer Engineering
There are numerous electric skylight openers available for purchase for home-use, but the majority of them are remote based, or operated by a wall-unit. Furthermore, these devices are in hard to reach places, so if one were to lose the remote on a remote operated system, the only option is to contact the manufacturer for a new device. As such, my senior project, in collaboration with Colton Sundstrom’s senior project, build upon our existing capstone project in order to allow operation of the Internet of Things (IoT) device over the internet. Our client, Richard Murray, was unsatisfied with the current …

One-To-Cloud One-Time Pad Data Encryption: Introducing Virtual Prototyping With Pspice, Paul Tobin, Lee Tobin, Roberto Gandia Blanquer Dr, Michael Mckeever, Jonathan Blackledge
Conference papers
In this paper, we examine the design and application of a one-time pad encryption system for protecting data stored in the Cloud. Personalising security using a one-time pad generator at the client-end protects data from break-ins, side-channel attacks and backdoors in public encryption algorithms. The one-time pad binary sequences were obtained from modified analogue chaos oscillators initiated by noise and encoded client data locally. Specific ``one-to-Cloud'' storage applications returned control back to the end user but without the key distribution problem normally associated with one-time pad encryption. Development of the prototype was aided by ``Virtual Prototyping'' in the latest version …

Djukebox: A Mobile Application Senior Project, Alexander M. Mitchell
Computer Science and Software Engineering
I’m going to discuss the process used to research, design, and develop a mobile application to handle song requests from patrons to disc jockeys. The research phase was completed in the first half of the project, during CSC-491, along with much of the design. The rest of the design and all of the development was completed during CSC-492. Once development began there were times when reverting back to the design phase was needed, which became apparent as more was learned about the mobile platform chosen for development, Android, and the backend server utilized, Google Firebase. Ultimately the project was purely …
Micro-Spi Sediment Profile Imaging Micro-Inspector, Andrew P. Corvin, Caleb T. Davies, Matt R. Ferrari
Micro-Spi Sediment Profile Imaging Micro-Inspector, Andrew P. Corvin, Caleb T. Davies, Matt R. Ferrari
Mechanical Engineering
This project was proposed by Dr. Brian Paavo through a desire to more easily study the benthic sediment layers of the ocean. To do so, he asked us to build a simple and compact machine for use in sediment profile imagery (SPI). Although devices like this already exist, they are all large scale devices that require a ship with a crane to deploy, which is expensive and time consuming. Instead, he desired a “micro” SPI, which is capable of being deployed from a small vessel that can easily navigate shallow waters. Our interpretation of these requirements was as follows: a …

Annual ADFSL Conference on Digital Forensics, Security and Law
A lot of photographers and human rights advocates need to hide their identity while sharing their images on the internet. Hence, source–anonymization of digital images has become a critical issue in the present digital age. The current literature contains a number of digital forensic techniques for “source–identification” of digital images, one of the most efficient of them being Photo–Response Non–Uniformity (PRNU) sensor noise pattern based source detection. PRNU noise pattern being unique to every digital camera, such techniques prove to be highly robust way of source–identification. In this paper, we propose a counter–forensic technique to mislead this PRNU sensor noise …

The paper aims to explain the technology of emergence of information. Our research proves that information as communicational product is the result of processing within some operations, actions, mechanisms and strategies of informational material meanings. Are determined eight computational-communicative operations of building information. Information occurs in two communication phases, syncretic and the segregation-synthetic. The syncretic phase consists of four operations: referral of significant field, primary delimitation of information, detection-looking information and an anticipative-draft constitution (feedforward). The segregation-synthetic phase also includes four operations: discrimination, identification, interpretation and confrontation (feedback). In the future we will investigate informational actions, mechanisms and strategies.
