Computer Science and Engineering Theses and Dissertations
Modern System on Chips (SoCs) generally include embedded memories, and these memories may be vulnerable to malicious attacks such as hardware trojan horses (HTHs), test access port exploitation, and malicious software. This dissertation contributes verification as well as design obfuscation solutions aimed at design level detection of memory HTH circuits as well as obfuscation to prevent HTH triggering for embedded memory during functional operation. For malicious attack vectors stemming from test/debug interfaces, this dissertation presents novel solutions that enhance design verification and securitization of an IJTAG based test access interface. Such solutions can enhance SoC protection by preventing memory test …
Applying Hls To Fpga Data Preprocessing In The Advanced Particle-Astrophysics Telescope, Meagan Konst
Applying Hls To Fpga Data Preprocessing In The Advanced Particle-Astrophysics Telescope, Meagan Konst
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
The Advanced Particle-astrophysics Telescope (APT) and its preliminary iteration the Antarctic Demonstrator for APT (ADAPT) are highly collaborative projects that seek to capture gamma-ray emissions. Along with dark matter and ultra-heavy cosmic ray nuclei measurements, APT will provide sub-degree localization and polarization measurements for gamma-ray transients. This will allow for devices on Earth to point to the direction from which the gamma-ray transients originated in order to collect additional data. The data collection process is as follows. A scintillation occurs and is detected by the wavelength-shifting fibers. This signal is then read by an ASIC and stored in an ADC …

Theses and Dissertations
The increased quality and quantity of sensors provide an ever-increasing capability to collect large quantities of high-quality data in the field. Research devoted to translating that data is progressing rapidly; however, translating field data into usable information can require high performance computing capabilities. While high performance computing (HPC) resources are available in centralized facilities, bandwidth, latency, security and other limitations inherent to edge location in field sensor applications may prevent HPC resources from being used in a timely fashion necessary for potential United States Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) field applications. To address these limitations, the design requirements for RECON …

A Memory-Centric Customizable Domain-Specific Fpga Overlay For Accelerating Machine Learning Applications, Atiyehsadat Panahi
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Low latency inferencing is of paramount importance to a wide range of real time and userfacing Machine Learning (ML) applications. Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) offer unique advantages in delivering low latency as well as energy efficient accelertors for low latency inferencing. Unfortunately, creating machine learning accelerators in FPGAs is not easy, requiring the use of vendor specific CAD tools and low level digital and hardware microarchitecture design knowledge that the majority of ML researchers do not possess. The continued refinement of High Level Synthesis (HLS) tools can reduce but not eliminate the need for hardware-specific design knowledge. The designs …

Jack's Helping Hand and its hippotherapy participants required a device to serve as an alternative to a live horseback riding experience that could also increase the range of riders. This would provide more clients with equine-assisted therapy that has proven to better the lives of people with both physical and mental disabilities. Horses can be unpredictable, tall, and sometimes anxiety-inducing, especially for new riders. Our group’s aim was to develop a mechanical horse that will be able to reduce these issues for equine therapy centers and the riders they help. When a rider gets to practice sitting on the horse …
Smartphone Control Of Rc Cars, Weston R. Fitzgerald
Smartphone Control Of Rc Cars, Weston R. Fitzgerald
Electrical Engineering
The smartphone-controlled RC (remote-controlled) car is an inexpensive remote-controlled car designed to be fast and portable. Instead of manufacturing, packaging, and shipping a separate controller, the remote control is implemented in a phone application, which saves time and money in both the design process and the manufacturing process. Utilizing the user’s smartphone is more cost-effective since mobile devices are a common recurrence, and packaging fewer devices results in overall better portability of the product.
This smartphone-controlled car is speedy and intuitive to learn for typical smartphone users. The user can change the car’s speed and direction wirelessly using their phone; …

Accelerating Graphics Rendering On Risc-V Gpus, Joshua Simpson
Master's Theses
Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) are commonly used to accelerate massively parallel workloads across a wide range of applications from machine learning to cryptocurrency mining. The original application for GPUs, however, was to accelerate graphics rendering which remains popular today through video gaming and video rendering. While GPUs began as fixed function hardware with minimal programmability, modern GPUs have adopted a design with many programmable cores and supporting fixed function hardware for rasterization, texture sampling, and render output tasks. This balance enables GPUs to be used for general purpose computing and still remain adept at graphics rendering. Previous work at the …

Design Of Hardware To Aid Smartphone-Based Oscilloscope App, Riddock Moran
Design Of Hardware To Aid Smartphone-Based Oscilloscope App, Riddock Moran
Honors Program: Senior Projects (Public)
A smartphone-based oscilloscope improves on traditional lab oscilloscopes in accessibility and portability but faces several performance limitations compared to traditional oscilloscopes. Among these, an oscilloscope app that uses the phone’s audio to read voltage signals will have a sampling rate and voltage bottlenecked by the capabilities of the audio codec, which will rarely exceed a rate of 48 kHz and 1 volt, respectively. Additionally, smartphones lack the ability to read line-in audio, allowing only one channel input through the microphone. Direct connections to an audio source may not be possible due to requiring an audio jack connection, and different poles …

Designing A Digital Electronics Lab, Ben Buckwalter
Honors Program: Senior Projects (Public)
Hardware electronics tools can be more expensive than a new learner is willing to invest resulting in a barrier to entry. Furthermore, it can be difficult for a new learner to know where to start when learning electronics. To resolve this issue, we first explore current mobile app solutions that provide free electronics tooling. Then, we propose a design for a new mobile app that contains basic function generator and oscilloscope functionality as well as the learning resources necessary in order to guide new learners in the basics of digital electronics.
Side-Channel Analysis On Post-Quantum Cryptography Algorithms, Tristen Teague
Side-Channel Analysis On Post-Quantum Cryptography Algorithms, Tristen Teague
Computer Science and Computer Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
The advancements of quantum computers brings us closer to the threat of our current asymmetric cryptography algorithms being broken by Shor's Algorithm. NIST proposed a standardization effort in creating a new class of asymmetric cryptography named Post-Quantum Cryptography (PQC). These new algorithms will be resistant against both classical computers and sufficiently powerful quantum computers. Although the new algorithms seem mathematically secure, they can possibly be broken by a class of attacks known as side-channels attacks (SCA). Side-channel attacks involve exploiting the hardware that the algorithm runs on to figure out secret values that could break the security of the system. …

With the rising complexity and size of hardware designs, saving development time and cost by employing third-party intellectual property (IP) into various first-party designs has become a necessity. However, using third-party IPs introduces the risk of adding malicious behavior to the design, including hardware Trojans. Different from software Trojan detection, the detection of hardware Trojans in an efficient and cost-effective manner is an ongoing area of study and has significant complexities depending on the development stage where Trojan detection is leveraged. Therefore, this thesis research proposes improvements to various components of the soft IP analysis methodology utilized by the Structural …

Cognality Vr: Exploring A Mobile Vr App With Multiple Stakeholders To Reduce Meltdowns In Autistic Children, Louanne E. Boyd, Espen Garner, Ian Kim, Gianna Valencia
Engineering Faculty Articles and Research
Many autistic children can have difficulty communicating, understanding others, and interacting with new and unfamiliar environments. At times they may suffer from a meltdown. The major contributing factor to meltdowns is sensory overwhelm. Technological solutions have shown promise in improving the quality of life for autistic children-however little exists to manage meltdowns. In this work with stakeholders, we design and deploy a low cost, mobile VR application to provide relief during sensory discomfort. Through the analysis of surveys from 88 stakeholders from a variety of groups (i.e., autistic adults, children with autism, parents of autistic individuals, and medical practitioners), we …

While the use of American Sign Language (ASL) interpreters and real-time captioning significantly increases deaf individuals’ ability to participate in a wide variety of functions, there are some limitations. The major problem is that current ways of providing communication and information access to deaf people require them to split their attention between the visual focus of the specific content and the interpreter/captioning display. At any given point in time, deaf people are forced to decide what explanation to miss with subsequent effects on topic comprehension and perceptions of the interaction and environments.

The NVIDIA-Mellanox Bluefield-2 is a 100 Gbps high-performance network interface which offers hardware offload and acceleration features that can operate directly on network traffic without routine involvement from the ARM CPU. This allows the ARM multi-core CPU to orchestrate the hardware to perform operations on both Ethernet and RDMA traffic at high rates rather than processing all the traffic directly. A testbed called TNAP was created for performance testing and a MiTM verification process called MiTMVMP is used to ensure proper network configuration. The hardware accelerators of the Bluefield-2 support a throughput of nearly 86 Gbps when using IPsec to …
Evaluating The Use Of Boot Image Encryption On Talos Ii Architecture, Calvin M. Muramoto
Evaluating The Use Of Boot Image Encryption On Talos Ii Architecture, Calvin M. Muramoto
Theses and Dissertations
Sensitive devices operating in unprotected environments are vulnerable to hardware attacks like reverse engineering and side channel analysis. This represents a security concern because the root of trust can be invalidated through boot firmware manipulation. For example, boot data is rarely encrypted and typically travels across an accessible bus like the LPC bus, allowing data to be easily intercepted and possibly manipulated during system startup. The ash chip storing the boot data can also be removed from these devices and examined to reveal detailed boot information. This paper details an implementation of encrypting a section of the boot image and …

With frequent weeding being a tedious chore and an essential task for a successful garden, there is need for an automated method of handling this routine. Existing technologies utilize computer vision, GPS, multiple units and other tools to remove weeds from garden plots. However, these solutions are often complex and expensive, suited for large agricultural plots in contrast to small-scale home gardens. In addition, many of these technologies, along with manual tillers and cultivators suited for home use, are unable to perform weeding within rows of crops in a process known as intra-row weeding. The Garden Bot is an autonomous, …
