Virtualized And Distributed Neighborhood Data Centers, Benjamin T. Niccum Jan 2026

Virtualized And Distributed Neighborhood Data Centers, Benjamin T. Niccum

Computer Science and Engineering Theses

This thesis evaluates whether PCIe-fabric-based resource pooling can support a decentralized neighborhood micro-data-center model under real implementation constraints. The work combines architecture design, prototype deployment, performance benchmarking, and security assessment. Results show strong prototype-scale feasibility with low-latency and high-throughput behavior, while also identifying deployment-blocking security gaps and operational maturity requirements. The thesis contributes an evidence-traceable path from concept validation to deployment-grade roadmap planning.

Development Of A Cost-Effective Daq For Measuring Brake Performance In Race Cars, Adrin Alias May 2025

Development Of A Cost-Effective Daq For Measuring Brake Performance In Race Cars, Adrin Alias

2025 Spring Honors Capstone Projects - Archive

This project explores the feasibility of creating a cost-effective data acquisition (DAQ) system for high-speed, real-time brake performance testing of Formula SAE racecars. The research addresses the limitations of the current MoTeC DAQ system currently employed by the team, which is costly and time-consuming to set up for on-car testing. The team will use a brake dynamometer for steady-state comparisons of different brake pad compounds (senior design project), but evaluating real-world performance requires on-car testing. By systematically comparing various hardware platforms, sensors, communication protocols, and storage solutions, this project aims to balance cost-efficiency with reliability and performance. The research evaluates …

Optimizing Architecture And Software For Next-Generation Memory Systems, Lingfeng Xiang Jan 2025

Optimizing Architecture And Software For Next-Generation Memory Systems, Lingfeng Xiang

Computer Science and Engineering Dissertations - Archive

The rapid advancement of memory technologies presents new challenges and opportunities for system software and architectural design. This dissertation investigates how to optimize modern computing systems for next-generation memory, mostly focusing on persistent memory and Compute Express Link (CXL)-based memory. First, we conduct a detailed characterization of Intel Optane DC Persistent Memory, identifying the distinct behaviors of its on-DIMM read and write buffers and analyzing their impact on application performance. These insights motivate optimizations that decouple read and write paths, revealing that random read latency—especially in pointer-chasing workloads—is a dominant performance bottleneck. Second, we present NOMAD, a page management framework …

Enabling Energy And Water Sustainability Through Out-Of-Band Emi Sensing And Infrastructure Modeling, Pranjol Sen Gupta Jan 2025

Enabling Energy And Water Sustainability Through Out-Of-Band Emi Sensing And Infrastructure Modeling, Pranjol Sen Gupta

Computer Science and Engineering Dissertations - Archive

As demand for Internet and cloud services surges, data centers have emerged as critical infrastructure—but they are also among theworld’s most energy- andwater-intensive facilities. Effective power management, particularly at the server level, is essential for improving efficiency, reliability, and sustainability. However, server-level power monitoring remains uncommon due to the high cost of hardware instrumentation and the intrusiveness of software-based solutions, especially in shared colocation environments. My research introduces a novel, low-cost, and non-intrusive method for server-level power monitoring using conducted electromagnetic interference (EMI). By analyzing EMI signals captured from higher levels in the power distribution network, this approach estimates individual …

Exploring Smart Thermostat, Don P. Dang Dec 2024

Exploring Smart Thermostat, Don P. Dang

2024 Fall Honors Capstone Projects - Archive

This study examines the security, privacy, and compatibility challenges associated with smart thermostats in smart home systems. Smart thermostats, as part of the growing Internet of Things (IoT) ecosystem, face vulnerabilities such as unauthorized access, data breaches, and inconsistent security protocols. Using a mixed-methods approach, this research evaluates encryption techniques, communication protocols (Zigbee, Z-Wave, Wi Fi), and user behaviors that impact system security and efficiency. Key findings indicate that 35% of users are concerned about hacking risks, while 25% express data privacy concerns. Many users lack awareness of security measures, such as firmware updates and password management, which increases vulnerabilities. …

Building A Wireless Electronic Control Unit For An Electric Vehicle, Hector S. Sosa May 2024

Building A Wireless Electronic Control Unit For An Electric Vehicle, Hector S. Sosa

2024 Spring Honors Capstone Projects - Archive

Modern vehicles have a variety of features such remote start systems, advance drive assist systems, smart suspension systems, and a feature rich infotainment system. With all this technology in the car, there exists a complex network of computers working together in conjunction to deliver the modern driving experience that many people have today. To be competitive in the market, auto manufacturers are tasked to add additional features to vehicles by adding additional or modifying electronic control units (ECUs). In this study, an ECU will be designed for a mock electric vehicle which contains an already established network of ECU’s. The …

Exploring Machine Learning Techniques For Embedded Hardware, Neel R. Vora Jan 2024

Exploring Machine Learning Techniques For Embedded Hardware, Neel R. Vora

Computer Science and Engineering Theses - Archive

This thesis delves into the intricate symbiosis between machine learning (ML) methodologies and embedded hardware systems, with a primary focus on augmenting efficiency and real-time processing capabilities across diverse application domains. It confronts the formidable challenge of deploying sophisticated ML algorithms on resource-constrained embedded hardware, aiming not only to optimize performance but also to minimize energy consumption. Innovative strategies are explored to tailor ML models for streamlined execution on embedded platforms, with validation conducted across various real-world application domains. Notable contributions include the development of a deep-learning framework leveraging a variational autoencoder (VAE) for compressing physiological signals from wearables while …

Development Of A Collaborative Research Platform For Efficient Data Management And Visualization Of Qubit Control, Devanshu Brahmbhatt

Computer Science and Engineering Theses - Archive

This thesis introduces QubiCSV, a pioneering open-source platform for quantum computing field. With an emphasis on collaborative research, QubiCSV addresses the critical need for specialized data management and visualization tools in qubit control. The platform is crafted to overcome the challenges posed by the high costs and complexities associated with quantum experimental setups. It emphasizes efficient utilization of resources through shared ideas, data, and implementation strategies. One of the primary obstacles in quantum computing research has been the ineffective management of extensive calibration data and the inability to visualize complex quantum experiment outcomes effectively. QubiCSV fills this gap by offering …
