Analyzing Energy Use In 2d & 3d Imaging Systems And Workflows, Michael J. Bennett

Published Works

This study examines energy consumption in cultural heritage imaging systems and workflows, addressing a gap in sustainability research that has to date focused primarily on data storage infrastructure estimations. Using Home Assistant edge computing and Z-Wave smart plugs, seven distinct imaging systems were monitored over 203 hours, capturing 55,211 images, and rendering 2,448 objects. Results show an average energy requirement of 11.1 Wh per object, with an annual total of 747 kWh for digitization activities. Findings highlight opportunities to reduce energy demand and improve efficiency, such as automating continuous light shutoff and optimizing postprocessing routines that support institutional sustainability goals …

This thesis details our design, implementation, and collaborative development of an intelligent vehicle logging system built on a Raspberry Pi 5. Unlike standard consumer dash cams that act as closed "black boxes," our system uses a dual-camera stereo vision setup integrated with centimeter-level accuracy. While we successfully built a functional Proof of Concept capable of event-triggered recording, dual-monitor visualization, and smart detection and recognition, this paper focuses on our engineering journey and the real-world challenges we faced. This thesis evaluates whether PCIe-fabric-based resource pooling can support a decentralized neighborhood micro-data-center model under real implementation constraints. The work combines architecture design, prototype deployment, performance benchmarking, and security assessment. Results show strong prototype-scale feasibility with low-latency and high-throughput behavior, while also identifying deployment-blocking security gaps and operational maturity requirements. The thesis contributes an evidence-traceable path from concept validation to deployment-grade roadmap planning.

The main goal of the project is to design and manufacture a combined dashboard and data logger for the vehicles produced by the Zips Racing design team. The dashboard will intuitively display real-time information to the driver and record all received information while driving. This information may be pulled off the device later for performing data analysis. Modern DRAM scaling has reduced cell capacitance and increased thermal sensitivity, making disturbance-based faults such as RowHammer and RowPress increasingly significant reliability and security concerns. RowHammer induces bit flips through repeated row activations, while RowPress does so by holding a wordline open for an extended duration; both exploit inherent capacitive coupling and leakage mechanisms in dense DRAM arrays. This thesis introduces HeatHammer, a thermally assisted disturbance exploit that interleaves RowPress and RowHammer operations to amplify charge leakage and trigger row-traversing bit flips. Virtual environments play a significant role in the IT industry, with many companies relying on this technology. With VMware’s increasing licensing costs following its acquisition by Broadcom, many businesses are seeking alternative virtualization solutions. This study evaluates the performance of Proxmox and Hyper-V by implementing a three-node high-availability cluster for each platform and conducting benchmarking tests on CPU performance, storage efficiency, and network throughput. Our results indicate that Hyper-V performs better with Windows-based virtual machines, while Proxmox demonstrates superior performance with Linux-based workloads. Additionally, Proxmox offers a more user-friendly cluster setup, whereas Hyper-V requires greater technical expertise.

The rapid advancement of memory technologies presents new challenges and opportunities for system software and architectural design. This dissertation investigates how to optimize modern computing systems for next-generation memory, mostly focusing on persistent memory and Compute Express Link (CXL)-based memory. First, we conduct a detailed characterization of Intel Optane DC Persistent Memory, identifying the distinct behaviors of its on-DIMM read and write buffers and analyzing their impact on application performance. These insights motivate optimizations that decouple read and write paths, revealing that random read latency—especially in pointer-chasing workloads—is a dominant performance bottleneck. Smart thermostats, as part of the growing Internet of Things (IoT) ecosystem, face vulnerabilities such as unauthorized access, data breaches, and inconsistent security protocols. Using a mixed-methods approach, this research evaluates encryption techniques, communication protocols (Zigbee, Z-Wave, Wi Fi), and user behaviors that impact system security and efficiency. Key findings indicate that 35% of users are concerned about hacking risks, while 25% express data privacy concerns. Our program collects vehicle data using an OBD-II device called Carloop that is plugged into the vehicle's diagnostic port. The device executes our code which then communicates with the vehicle's onboard computer to collect data such as engine RPM, vehicle speed, fuel level, and other diagnostic information. This data is then sent over WiFi to Particle’s Cloud, which is a platform for managing IoT devices.

Summary of Functional Requirements

This project integrates LTSpice with a python script that runs a genetic algorithm to bias a differential amplifier. The system biases the amplifier with 2 different voltages, the base voltage for the PNP BJTs of the active loads and a voltage controlling the current of the current sink. The project runs via a python script, gets data from LTSpice’s command line call, and iteratively runs until the system is biased to achieve the greatest gain on an arbitrary input voltage.
