Smart Collar, Gretchen T. Woodling, Sean Moran, Justen Bischoff, Jacob Sindelar

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

The Smart Collar is a universal pet tracker, designed to be small and exceedingly comfortable for any pet to wear. GPS technology is used to locate the device, allowing the user to track their pet, via a smart phone application. This application can be used to program the device, view maps of their pet’s location and history of travel. Operating primarily on Long Range Wide Area Network (LoRaWAN) for data transfer, the device consumes very little power, allowing for several days of run-time per charge of the battery. Boasting no monthly service fees, The Smart Collar provides pet owner’s an …

Terraria Server On A Raspberry Pi, Bradley Stoldt Jan 2020

Terraria Server On A Raspberry Pi, Bradley Stoldt

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

My senior project is designed to display some of the material I have learned throughout the four years at The University of Akron, as well as explore into a newer piece of technology. I will be researching and documenting myself setting up a live network at my house that will have a raspberry pi running on it as a game server. The goal of this project is to get internal users to connect to the server, as well as users that are outside of my home network.

Smart Parking Deck, Ryne Turner, Matthew Mcdade, Julie Aichinger, Laveréna Wienclaw Jan 2019

Smart Parking Deck, Ryne Turner, Matthew Mcdade, Julie Aichinger, Laveréna Wienclaw

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

The Smart Parking Deck employs elementary circuit design elements and mobile application development. Each device module uses laser proximity sensors to check the availability of an individual parking space and a Zigbee unit to communicate with the adjacent device module. The modules are connected to a network hub that manages all of the incoming and outgoing parking data. This data is displayed on the mobile application. The system is easily manageable and energy efficient, significantly decreasing the costs associated with other smart parking systems on the market. This system is aimed at decreasing commute time for students by allowing them …

Home Networking With Enterprise Equipment, Alex Lowers Jan 2016

Home Networking With Enterprise Equipment, Alex Lowers

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

This project tested various wired and wireless topologies and benchmarked download speeds and quality for various types of media. For music, topology had a negligible impact. High quality video streams were impacted by latency introduced in the wireless topologies. Likewise, video game streaming, especially games of high graphical fidelity, were negatively impacted when streamed over a wireless network. For all types of media, a fully wired topology is recommended.

Automated Beverage Dispenser, Sonya Istocka Jan 2015

Automated Beverage Dispenser, Sonya Istocka

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

The intention of this project is to define a new way of distributing liquor. The project will consist of a device which will measure and track liquor being poured and associate it with a person, either a bartender or a bar patron. The challenges will be controlling the flow of liquor and recording it in an extremely accurate manner as well as processing data quickly so that a pour can be initiated very soon after a person is identified. The liquor dispenser will open up the possibility of a person being able to dispense their own liquor in a controlled …

Implementing Is-Is Routing And Dhcp Services In An Ipv4 Network, Laura Thompson Jan 2015

Implementing Is-Is Routing And Dhcp Services In An Ipv4 Network, Laura Thompson

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

This research project explores the operation of the IS-IS routing protocol, as well as DHCP and DNS services provided by a Raspberry Pi computer. IS-IS is a routing protocol that is commonly ignored in most training and certification programs, because it is most frequently used by service providers. However, IS-IS solutions are also deployed in some large enterprise networks, making experience with the protocol a valuable skill.

In order to gain a deeper understanding of the routing domains, route propagation, and general operation of IS-IS, additional services were implemented in this project. A Raspberry Pi computer was used as an …
