Development Of Object-Oriented Components For Atm Network Simulation With Emphasis On Congestion Control, Wai Kit Sin Jan 2001

Development Of Object-Oriented Components For Atm Network Simulation With Emphasis On Congestion Control, Wai Kit Sin

Student Works (2000-2009)

Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) is a very high-speed transmission technology. The barrage of technological advancements has continuously enhanced the network performance. There is an increasing dependence on the network. Thus, there is a need to accurately predict the impact of network and applications changes in the dynamic network environment. The network simulator is a tool to analyze the behavior of ATM networks without the expense of building a real network. The simulation of this simulator will give the results that imitate the real network environment. The aim of this project is to develop object-oriented components for an ATM Network Simulator …

3d Outside Cell Interference Factor For An Air-Ground Cdma ‘Cellular’ System, David W. Matolak May 2000

3d Outside Cell Interference Factor For An Air-Ground Cdma ‘Cellular’ System, David W. Matolak

Faculty Publications

We compute the outside-cell interference factor of a code-division multiple-access (CDMA) system for a three-dimensional (3-D) air-to-ground (AG) "cellular-like" network consisting of a set of uniformly distributed ground base stations and airborne mobile users. The CDMA capacity is roughly inversely proportional to the outside-cell interference factor. It is shown that for the nearly free-space propagation environment of these systems, the outside-cell interference factor can be larger than that for terrestrial propagation models (as expected) and depends approximately logarithmically upon both the cell height and cell radius.

Performance Analysis Of Tcp Enhancements In Satellite Data Networks, Ren H. Broyles Mar 1999

Performance Analysis Of Tcp Enhancements In Satellite Data Networks, Ren H. Broyles

Theses and Dissertations

This research examines two proposed enhancements to the well-known Transport Control Protocol (TCP) in the presence of noisy communication links. The Multiple Pipes protocol is an application-level adaptation of the standard TCP protocol, where several TCP links cooperate to transfer data. The Space Communication Protocol Standard - Transport Protocol (SCPS-TP) modifies TCP to optimize performance in a satellite environment. While SCPS-TP has inherent advantages that allow it to deliver data more rapidly than Multiple Pipes, the protocol, when optimized for operation in a high-error environment, is not compatible with legacy TCP systems, and requires changes to the TCP specification. This …

An Adaptive Scheme For Admission Control In Atm Networks, Saragur M. Srinidhi, William H. Thesling, Vijaya K. Konangi Apr 1997

An Adaptive Scheme For Admission Control In Atm Networks, Saragur M. Srinidhi, William H. Thesling, Vijaya K. Konangi

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

This paper presents a real time front-end admission control scheme for ATM networks. A call management scheme which uses the burstiness associated with traffic sources in a heterogeneous ATM environment to effect dynamic assignment of bandwidth is presented. In the proposed scheme, call acceptance is based on an on-line evaluation of the upper bound on cell loss probability which is derived from the estimated distribution of the number of calls arriving. Using this scheme, the negotiated quality of service will be assured when there is no estimation error. The control mechanism is effective when the number of …

Detection For A Statistically-Known, Time-Varying Dispersive Channel, David W. Matolak, S. G. Wilson Dec 1996

Detection For A Statistically-Known, Time-Varying Dispersive Channel, David W. Matolak, S. G. Wilson

Faculty Publications

Detection for the statistically known channel (SKC) is aimed at obtaining good performance in situations where our statistical knowledge of a time-varying channel is good, and where other equalization/detection schemes are either too complex to implement, or their performance is limited due to the rapidity of channel fading, or where we are simply unable to perform channel estimation. By using a statistical characterization of the channel, we develop a new detector that performs maximum-likelihood sequence estimation (MLSE) (given the channel model) on blocks of N symbols. Both symbol-spaced and fractionally spaced samples are used, to obtain two different detectors, that …

Real-Time Visual Speech Articulation Training Aid, Neiyer S. Correal Oct 1996

Real-Time Visual Speech Articulation Training Aid, Neiyer S. Correal

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

A real-time visual articulation training aid has been implemented. It provides instantaneous visual feedback of vowel and stop-consonant production on a computer screen. The vowel training system corresponds to an improved floating-point implementation of a previous fixed-point system developed by Beck (1992). The new implementation provides better accuracy and an approximate five-fold increase in speed. Acoustic features computed from global short-time spectral shape are used for classification of vowels. Temporal spectral trajectories timed to begin with burst onset are used for stop consonants. A neural network is used to transform measurements of auditory stimuli from the feature space to a …

Resource/Dataflow Graph Operating System Development, Sriram J. Coimbatore Oct 1996

Resource/Dataflow Graph Operating System Development, Sriram J. Coimbatore

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Implementation of a new dataflow schedule model is the objective of this thesis. The dataflow model algorithm called the resource/dataflow graph model is implemented on a peer-to-peer communication network comprising of six personal computers. This dataflow model is implemented making use of an earlier dataflow model called ATAMM (Algorithm to Architecture Mapping Model) developed by ODU and National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). Development issues include modification of the RDFG testbed operating system and a scheme to transfer data buffers using the ethernet channel from one processor to another processor. This, in turn, equips each sub-module of an application with …

Atomic Broadcast In Heterogeneous Distributed Systems, Osman Zeineldine Oct 1995

Atomic Broadcast In Heterogeneous Distributed Systems, Osman Zeineldine

Computer Science Theses & Dissertations

Communication services have long been recognized as possessing a dominant effect on both performance and robustness of distributed systems. Distributed applications rely on a multitude of protocols for the support of these services. Of crucial importance are multicast protocols. Reliable multicast protocols enhance the efficiency and robustness of distributed systems. Numerous reliable multicast protocols have been proposed, each differing in the set of assumptions adopted, especially for the communication network. These assumptions make each protocol suitable for a specific environment. The presence of different distributed applications that run on different LANs and single distributed applications that span different LANs mandate …

Navigation Satellite Selection Using Neural Networks, Daniel J. Simon, Hossny El-Sherief May 1995

Navigation Satellite Selection Using Neural Networks, Daniel J. Simon, Hossny El-Sherief

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

The application of neural networks to optimal satellite subset selection for navigation use is discussed. The methods presented in this paper are general enough to be applicable regardless of how many satellite signals are being processed by the receiver. The optimal satellite subset is chosen by minimizing a quantity known as Geometric Dilution of Precision (GDOP), which is given by the trace of the inverse of the measurement matrix. An artificial neural network learns the functional relationships between the entries of a measurement matrix and the eigenvalues of its inverse, and thus generates GDOP without inverting a matrix. Simulation results …

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis documents the design and implementation of a DSCS III single Channel Transponder (SCT) beacon telemetry display. The system is a personal computer based design which interfaces to three SCT beacon receiver/demodulators. The software was designed to decode and display both the DSCS III A and DSCS HI B satellite beacons. Recordings of the SCT beacon display can be made on paper and/or magnetic media when triggered by the user, a watchdog timer, or the SCT command accept telemetry bit. In addition, the system can be configured with an IRIG B Universal Time Coordinates (UTC) card which enables the …

Computer Simulation Of A General Purpose Satellite Modem, William L. Montgomery Jr. Dec 1992

Computer Simulation Of A General Purpose Satellite Modem, William L. Montgomery Jr.

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this research was to model and simulate the performance of a digital phase shift keyed satellite modem. The probability of bit error (P sub b) at different levels of energy per bit to noise power ratio (E sub b/N sub o) was the performance measure. The channel was assumed to contribute only additive white Gaussian noise. A second order Costas loop performs demodulation in the modem and was the key part of the simulation. The Costas loop with second order Butterworth arm filters was tested by finding the response to a phase or frequency step. The Costas …

An Application Of Neural Networks In Data Communication Real-Time Resource Reallocation, Qing Fan Jul 1992

An Application Of Neural Networks In Data Communication Real-Time Resource Reallocation, Qing Fan

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

This thesis presents an application of artificial neural networks in real-time resource reallocation, a methodology used in the implementation of an intelligent interface node in the Computer Integrated Manufacturing (CIM) environment. In particular, the problem is formulated using a Hopfield neural network model. The real-time reallocation problem is mapped into a two-dimensional matrix of neurons similar to Hopfield and Tank's approach to the traveling salesman problem (TSP) . An energy function is formulated in terms of the hard constraints and the solution cost. The interconnection weights and the input biases are determined by the energy function. It is shown through …

Visual Speech Training Aid For The Deaf, Subhashri Venkat Jul 1990

Visual Speech Training Aid For The Deaf, Subhashri Venkat

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

A computer-based vowel articulation training aid has been developed. A "continuous" acoustic-phonetic transformation is performed to map speech parameters to a lower dimensionality display space. There are two possible approaches to this transformation problem. The transformation could be either linear or a combination nonlinear/linear. The nonlinear transformation is performed using a multi-layered feedforward neural network with linear output layers. Speech parameters are extracted either from an analog filter bank arrangement (band energies) or by a digital signal processing procedure (Discrete Cosine Transform Coefficients). The speech parameters obtained from both methods correspond to the spectral envelope of the speech signals. The …

Computation Of Frequency Characteristics Of Lumped-Element 3 Db Branch Line Directional Couplers, H. R. Mgombelo Dec 1988

Computation Of Frequency Characteristics Of Lumped-Element 3 Db Branch Line Directional Couplers, H. R. Mgombelo

Tanzania Journal of Engineering and Technology (TJET)

An analysis of the 3 dB lumped-element branchline directional coupler constructed using L-C and T networks is given. Matrices of lumped element capacitances and inductances in the form of low and high pass filters are equated to the matrices of the distributed element transmission lines at the centre frequency of operation, as a result of which design equations are derived. Using even and odd modes of excitation, frequency characteristics of the directional couplers are computed and compared to those of the coupler constructed using distributed element transmission lines.

Compiling Unit Clauses For The Warren Abstract Machine, George D. Herbert Jan 1987

Compiling Unit Clauses For The Warren Abstract Machine, George D. Herbert

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This thesis describes the design, development, and installation of a computer program which compiles unit clauses generated in a Prolog-based environment at Argonne National Laboratories into Warren Abstract Machine (WAM) code. The program enhances the capabilities of the environment by providing rapid unification and subsumption tests for the very significant class of unit clauses. This should improve performance substantially for large programs that generate and use many unit clauses.

An Investigation To Improve Linear Predictive Vocoder Pulse/Noise Excitation Models, Elizabeth Annella Martina Effer Oct 1985

An Investigation To Improve Linear Predictive Vocoder Pulse/Noise Excitation Models, Elizabeth Annella Martina Effer

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

The quality of synthetic speech from Linear Predictive (LP) vocoders is known to be degraded due to the lack of detail in the commonly used pulse/noise excitation model. In this investigation, it was hypothesized that this degradation is due to the lack of precise timing information in the pulses and to the constraint that each short-time segment of excitation be either an impulse train or white noise. Accordingly, more complex excitation models were implemented using precise timing from peaks in the residual and a mixture of pulses and noise. Since the LP residual is known to be the perfect excitation …
