Development And Simulation Of A Damage Assessment And Recovery Method For Critical Database Systems, Anthony Pham May 2024

Development And Simulation Of A Damage Assessment And Recovery Method For Critical Database Systems, Anthony Pham

Computer Science and Computer Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses

With how much the world relies on technology and the critical database infrastructure that supports it, the infrastructures require efficient methods to detect and resolve suspicious database transactions, whether malicious or not. This paper focuses on an algorithm that detects and resolves malicious transactions in a database. The process begins with identifying suspicious transactions based on common patterns. When a transaction is flagged, the algorithm segments groups of suspicious transactions in separate log files, separating them for easy access. Within these segments, any dependent transactions that use data affected by the suspicious transactions will be stored there. After the transaction …

Fine-Grained And Controllably Editable Data Sharing With Accountability In Cloud Storage, Huiying Hou, Jianting Ning, Yunlei Zhao, Robert H. Deng

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

With the increasing cloud storage service, users can enjoy non-interactive data sharing. Nonetheless, the data owner cannot timely update the shared data all the while. To ensure the timeliness and the authoritative source of the data, some users should be allowed to update the data on behalf of an authoritative data owner without changing data source. However, this allows harmful information to be injected into the data unnoticeably. How to efficiently realize editable cloud-based data sharing supporting malicious user tracing has not been fully explored. To address the problem, we propose a fine-grained and controllably editable cloud-based data sharing scheme …

Lapnitor: A Web Service That Protects Your Laptop From Theft., Michael Ameteku

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

Laptop theft is an issue worldwide. According to an article from 2018, Security Boulevard stated that a laptop is stolen every 53 seconds. Using a laptop's camera, we can monitor the surroundings of the laptop and reduce a laptop's probability of being stolen. According to the University of Pittsburgh, a laptop has a 1-in- 10 chance of being stolen and nearly half of these thefts occur in offices or classrooms. These thefts mostly occur when a laptop owner leaves their device unattended for a certain period of time to maybe go visit the restroom or attend to a call when …

Dbknot: A Transparent And Seamless, Pluggable Tamper Evident Database, Islam Khalil Oct 2020

Dbknot: A Transparent And Seamless, Pluggable Tamper Evident Database, Islam Khalil

Theses and Dissertations

Database integrity is crucial to organizations that rely on databases of important data. They suffer from the vulnerability to internal fraud. Database tampering by internal malicious employees with high technical authorization to their infrastructure or even compromised by externals is one of the important attack vectors.

This thesis addresses such challenge in a class of problems where data is appended only and is immutable. Examples of operations where data does not change is a) financial institutions (banks, accounting systems, stock market, etc., b) registries and notary systems where important data is kept but is never subject to change, and c) …

Does The Age Of An It Executive Impact Adoption Levels Of Cloud Computing Services?, Marcus L. Smith Mar 2020

Does The Age Of An It Executive Impact Adoption Levels Of Cloud Computing Services?, Marcus L. Smith

Faculty Publications

This author researched previously the personal decision factors considered by information technology (IT) executives when making the cloud computing services adoptionchoice. The conclusions in that work (Smith, Jr., 2016) supported four hypotheses, namely, (a) advancement, recognition and satisfaction from accomplishments, (b) top management support, (c) diminishment of personal image, and (d) a pattern of technology readiness have a positive influence on business intentions to adopt cloud computing services. Interestingly, a fifth hypothesis, diminishment of personal image, was found to have a negative influence on business intentions. The relationship between age of the survey respondents and adoption levels was highlighted in …

Algorithms For Achieving Fault-Tolerance And Ensuring Security In Cloud Computing Systems, Md. Tariqul Islam Jan 2020

Algorithms For Achieving Fault-Tolerance And Ensuring Security In Cloud Computing Systems, Md. Tariqul Islam

Theses and Dissertations--Computer Science

Security and fault tolerance are the two major areas in cloud computing systems that need careful attention for its widespread deployment. Unlike supercomputers, cloud clusters are mostly built on low cost, unreliable, commodity hardware. Therefore, large-scale cloud systems often suffer from performance degradation, service outages, and sometimes node and application failures. On the other hand, the multi-tenant shared architecture, dynamism, heterogeneity, and openness of cloud computing make it susceptible to various security threats and vulnerabilities. In this dissertation, we analyze these problems and propose algorithms for achieving fault tolerance and ensuring security in cloud computing systems.

First, we perform a …

Security is a critical concern around the world. In many domains from cybersecurity to sustainability, limited security resources prevent complete security coverage at all times. Instead, these limited resources must be scheduled (or allocated or deployed), while simultaneously taking into account the importance of different targets, the responses of the adversaries to the security posture, and the potential uncertainties in adversary payoffs and observations, etc. Computational game theory can help generate such security schedules. Indeed, casting the problem as a Stackelberg game, we have developed new algorithms that are now deployed over multiple years in multiple applications for scheduling of …

Dsfs: Decentralized Security For Large Parallel File Systems, Zhongying Niu, Hong Jiang, Ke Zhou, Dan Feng, Tianming Yang, Dongliang Lei, Anli Chen Mar 2010

Dsfs: Decentralized Security For Large Parallel File Systems, Zhongying Niu, Hong Jiang, Ke Zhou, Dan Feng, Tianming Yang, Dongliang Lei, Anli Chen

School of Computing: Technical Reports

This paper describes DSFS, a decentralized security system for large parallel file system. DSFS stores global access control lists (ACLs) in a centralized decisionmaking server and pushes pre-authorization lists (PALs) into storage devices. Thus DSFS allows users to flexibly set any access control policy for the global ACL or even change the global ACL system without having to upgrade the security code in their storage devices. With pre-authorization lists, DSFS enables a networkattached storage device to immediately authorize I/O, instead of demanding a client to acquire an authorization from a centralized authorization server at a crucial time. The client needs …
