When you consider industries that were reinvented in recent history, you will find companies that continued to morph and remain relevant and viable and those who started off valid and in favor, but alas, perhaps didn’t make the sustainable cut. Consider, for example, Blockbuster Video, they were at the forefront of providing the legal rental of movies using physical media, such as a tape or DVD. They had the opportunity to transition from physical movie rentals to online—they had a customer base and name recognition. Do you see any Blockbuster Video stores around? Chances are you do not, and this …

Instructional designers, instructional systems designers, and other educational technologists are, by their nature, innovators. These professionals apply and extend the applied science of learning, systems, communication, and instructional design theory to help students learn. Technology in some capacity is used to make the connections between subject matter experts, teachers, instructors, and their learners. It is common for instructional designers to seek new tools, techniques, and innovations for the improvement of learning, access, quality, and student satisfaction. However, the adoption and diffusion of new educational technology and innovation is a complex process that depends on many variables. Understanding these processes and …

Metascriptura: A General Data Provenance Framework, Maria Joseph Israel
Engineering Ph.D. Theses
Digital technology makes it easy to generate and distribute large volumes of data. However, it has also complicated the process of verifying and validating sources of data and their derivatives risking obfuscation of truth amidst the deluge of data. To address this issue, I trace and develop an approach based on data provenance tracking. Specifically, I make it possible to deep trace the origins and lineages of data, by applying state-of-the-art data provenance technologies, which I extend beyond traditional data provenance applications. In this dissertation, I demonstrate that with the right data infrastructure it is feasible to grant greater agency …

A Patient-Specific Algorithm For Lung Segmentation In Chest Radiographs, Manawaduge Supun De Silva, Barath Narayanan Narayanan, Russell C. Hardie
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications
Lung segmentation plays an important role in computer-aided detection and diagnosis using chest radiographs (CRs). Currently, the U-Net and DeepLabv3+ convolutional neural network architectures are widely used to perform CR lung segmentation. To boost performance, ensemble methods are often used, whereby probability map outputs from several networks operating on the same input image are averaged. However, not all networks perform adequately for any specific patient image, even if the average network performance is good. To address this, we present a novel multi-network ensemble method that employs a selector network. The selector network evaluates the segmentation outputs from several networks; on …
Splitting Gaussian Densities To Minimize Variance Along A Direction Of Nonlinearity, Amit Kumar
Splitting Gaussian Densities To Minimize Variance Along A Direction Of Nonlinearity, Amit Kumar
Dissertations and Theses
Nonlinear functions of random vectors are frequently used in signal processing, and especially in state space tracking algorithms. Many of these algorithms require a way of estimating the probability density of the state vector at the output of the nonlinear function. Algorithms derived from Kalman Filter, such as Extended Kalman Filter and Unscented Kalman Filter, are popular choices for this, but they only estimate mean and covariance which may be insufficient to describe the non-Gaussian densities. On the other hand, Monte Carlo methods such as particle filters can be more capable but require much more computation. Gaussian mixture filters aim …

KSU Proceedings on Cybersecurity Education, Research and Practice
Water quality refers to measurable water characteristics, including chemical, biological, physical, and radiological characteristics usually relative to human needs. Dumping waste and untreated sewage is the reason for water pollution and several diseases to the living hood. The quality of water can also have a significant impact on animals and plant ecosystems. Therefore, keeping track of water quality is a substantial national interest. Much research has been done for measuring water quality using sensors to prevent water pollution. In summary, those systems are built based on online and reagent-free water monitoring SCADA systems in wired networks. However, centralized servers, transmission …

Mechanical Engineering ETDs
Lead zirconate titanate (PZT) has been a material of interest for sensor, actuator, and transducer applications in microelectromechanical systems (MEMS). This is due to their favorable piezoelectric, pyroelectric and ferroelectric properties. While various methods are available to deposit PZT thin films, radio frequency (RF) magnetron sputtering was selected to provide high quality PZT films with the added capability of batch processing. These sputter deposited PZT films were characterized to determine their internal film stress, Young’s modulus, composition, and structure. After characterization, the sputtered PZT samples were poled using corona poling and direct poling methods. As a means of comparison, commercially …

Generative Spatio-Temporal And Multimodal Analysis Of Neonatal Pain, Md Sirajus Salekin
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Neonates can not express their pain like an adult person. Due to the lacking of proper muscle growth and inability to express non-verbally, it is difficult to understand their emotional status. In addition, if the neonates are under any treatment or left monitored after any major surgeries (post-operative), it is more difficult to understand their pain due to the side effect of medications and the caring system (i.e. intubated, masked face, covered body with blanket, etc.). In a clinical environment, usually, bedside nurses routinely observe the neonate and measure the pain status following any standard clinical pain scale. But current …

Compilation Optimizations To Enhance Resilience Of Big Data Programs And Quantum Processors, Travis D. Lecompte
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Modern computers can experience a variety of transient errors due to the surrounding environment, known as soft faults. Although the frequency of these faults is low enough to not be noticeable on personal computers, they become a considerable concern during large-scale distributed computations or systems in more vulnerable environments like satellites. These faults occur as a bit flip of some value in a register, operation, or memory during execution. They surface as either program crashes, hangs, or silent data corruption (SDC), each of which can waste time, money, and resources. Hardware methods, such as shielding or error correcting memory (ECM), …

Enabling The Human Perception Of A Working Camera In Web Conferences Via Its Movement, Anish Shrestha
LSU Master's Theses
In recent years, video conferencing has seen a significant increase in its usage due to the COVID-19 pandemic. When casting user’s video to other participants, the videoconference applications (e.g. Zoom, FaceTime, Skype, etc.) mainly leverage 1) webcam’s LED-light indicator, 2) user’s video feedback in the software and 3) the software’s video on/off icons to remind the user whether the camera is being used. However, these methods all impose the responsibility on the user itself to check the camera status, and there have been numerous cases reported when users expose their privacy inadvertently due to not realizing that their camera is …

Wireless sensor networks can improve the efficiency for collecting information in underwater environments. In the past, researchers collected data under the sea by the way of both sending oceanographic equipments into water and recovering it at the end of mission. The whole process often took long time so real-time services cannot be supported. Wireless sensor networks can detect events and transmit the collected data to a data center immediately. However, current terrestrial routing protocols are not suitable in the underwater sensor networks. Due to unique characteristics in the water, the transmission performance and energy of the routing protocols are inefficient. …

A Quality Metric For K-Means Clustering Based On Centroid Locations, Manoj Thulasidas
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
K-Means clustering algorithm does not offer a clear methodology to determine the appropriate number of clusters; it does not have a built-in mechanism for K selection. In this paper, we present a new metric for clustering quality and describe its use for K selection. The proposed metric, based on the locations of the centroids, as well as the desired properties of the clusters, is developed in two stages. In the initial stage, we take into account the full covariance matrix of the clustering variables, thereby making it mathematically similar to a reduced chi2. We then extend it to account for …

Many researchers have introduced blockchain into the Internet of Vehicles (IoV) to support trading or other authentication applications between vehicles. However, the traditional blockchain cannot well support the query of transactions that occur in a specified area which is important for vehicle users since they are bound to the geolocations. Therefore, the querying efficiency of the geolocation attribute of transactions is vital for blockchain-based applications. Existing work does not well handle the geolocation of vehicles in the blockchain, and thus the querying efficiency is questionable. In this paper, we design a rapid query method of regional transactions in blockchain for …
