Channel Scanning And Access Point Selection Mechanisms For 802.11 Handoff: A Survey, Dhananjay Singh Feb 2020

Channel Scanning And Access Point Selection Mechanisms For 802.11 Handoff: A Survey, Dhananjay Singh

Computer Science and Engineering Master's Theses

While the cellular technology has been evolving continuously in recent years and client handoffs remain unnoticed, the 802.11 networks still impose an enormous latency issue once the client device decides to roam between the Access Point (AP). This latency is caused by many factors reckoning on scanning the channels and searching for APs with better signal strength. Once data from all the nearby APs has been collected, the client picks the most suitable AP and tries to connect with it. The AP verifies if it has enough capability to serve the client. It also ensures that the client has the …

Electrical and Computer Engineering Publications

This paper presents the design and validation of a lightweight Magneto-Rheological (MR) clutch, called Hybrid Magneto-Rheological (HMR) clutch. The clutch utilizes a hybrid magnetization using an electromagnetic coil and a permanent magnet. The electromagnetic coil can adjust the magnetic field
generated by the permanent magnet to a desired value, and fully control the transmitted torque. To achieve the maximum torque to mass ratio, the design of HMR clutch is formulated as a multiobjective optimization problem with three design objectives, namely the transmitted torque, the mass of the clutch, and the
magnetic field strength within the clutch …

Tiny Disco: A Cost-Effective, High-Fidelity Wireless Audio System, Luke Martin Liberatore

Computer Engineering

The Tiny Disco is a WiFi based concert system, featuring improvements on popular “Silent Disco” concerts. Rather than being tied to compression and bandwidth restrictions present in traditional silent disco systems, the Tiny Disco system can deliver 320kbps+ audio quality, and allows listeners to bring their own headphones, further lending to the high quality audio experience.

Tiny Disco uses a Raspberry Pi as the audio server, and Espressif ESP32 microcontrollers as audio receivers/clients. The Tiny Disco is primarily geared toward smaller concerts and niche events where audio quality is valued, though due to its WiFi-based architecture, it can be expanded …

Cache-Enabled In Cooperative Cognitive Radio Networks For Transmission Performance, Jiachen Yang, Houbing Song, Chaofan Ma, Jiabao Man, Huifang Xu, Gan Zheng

Publications

The proliferation of mobile devices that support the acceleration of data services (especially smartphones) has resulted in a dramatic increase in mobile traffic. Mobile data also increased exponentially, already exceeding the throughput of the backhaul. To improve spectrum utilization and increase mobile network traffic, in combination with content caching, we study the cooperation between primary and secondary networks via content caching. We consider that the secondary base station assists the primary user by pre-caching some popular primary contents. Thus, the secondary base station can obtain more licensed bandwidth to serve its own user. We mainly focus on the time delay …

A Hybrid Agent-Based And Equation Based Epidemiological Model For The Spread Of Infectious Diseases, Elizabeth Hunter Feb 2020

A Hybrid Agent-Based And Equation Based Epidemiological Model For The Spread Of Infectious Diseases, Elizabeth Hunter

Doctoral

Infectious disease models are essential in understanding how an outbreak might occur and how best to mitigate an outbreak. One of the most important factors in modelling a disease is choosing an appropriate model and determining the assump tions needed to create the model. The main research questions this thesis addresses are how do we create a model for the spread of infectious diseases that captures heterogeneous agents without using an inordinate amount of computing power and how can we use that model to plan for future infectious disease outbreaks. We start our work by analysing and comparing equation based …

Short-Term Electricity Price Forecasting In Deregulated Electricity Market Based On Enhanced Artificial Intelligence Techniques, Pourdaryaei Alireza

Student Works (2020-2029)

Electricity price forecasting is considered as one of prime factors for operation, planning and scheduling of price-setter market participants. However, possessing time variant, non-linear and non-stationary behaviors make the electricity price a complex signal. The main challenge in this area is providing highly accurate and efficient day-ahead price forecasting. A suitable feature selection technique, which is able to model the interacting features and nonlinearities of the forecast processes, is still required although researches have been performed for day-ahead forecasting. In this research, a hybrid electricity price forecasting methodology is proposed using two-stage feature selection method and optimization using adaptive neuro-fuzzy …

Code Smells: A Synthetic Narrative Review, Peter Kokol Prof, Marko Kokol, Sašo Zagoranski

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Code smells are symptoms of poor design and implementation choices, which might hinder comprehension, increase code complexity and fault-proneness and decrease maintainability of software systems. The aim of our study was to perform a triangulation of bibliometric and thematic analysis on code smell literature production. The search was performed on Scopus (Elsevier, Netherlands) database using the search string “code smells” which resulted in 442 publications. The Go-to statement was the first bad code smells identified in software engineering history in 1968. The literature production trend has been positive. The most productive countries were the United States, Italy and Brazil. Eight …

A Xor-Based Visual Cryptography Scheme For (2, N) Access Structure With Ideal Structure Division, Yuqiao Cheng, Zhengxin Fu, Bin Yu

Journal of System Simulation

Abstract: We propose a XOR-based visual cryptography scheme for (2, n) access structures. According to the definition of ideal access structure, the relationship of shares among the minimal qualified subsets is analyzed. And based on it, a division algorithm of access structures is presented with the theory of graph. By this approach, we can obtain the least number of ideal access structures. Additionally the processes of secret sharing and recovering are given. Experimental results show that this scheme can achieve a perfect secret recovery. Compared with existing schemes, the pixel expansion of our paper is the best.

Smart Routing: Towards Proactive Fault Handling Of Software-Defined Networks, Ali Malik, Benjamin Aziz, Mo Adda, Chih-Heng Ke Jan 2020

Smart Routing: Towards Proactive Fault Handling Of Software-Defined Networks, Ali Malik, Benjamin Aziz, Mo Adda, Chih-Heng Ke

Articles

In recent years, the emerging paradigm of software-defined networking has become a hot and thriving topic in both the industrial and academic sectors. Software-defined networking offers numerous benefits against legacy networking systems by simplifying the process of network management through reducing the cost of network configurations. Currently, data plane fault management is limited to two mechanisms: proactive and reactive. These fault management and recovery techniques are activated only after a failure occurrence and hence packet loss is highly likely to occur. This is due to convergence time where new network paths will need to be allocated in order to …

Investigating Patterns In Convolution Neural Network Parameters Using Probabilistic Support Vector Machines, Yuqiu Zhang Jan 2020

Investigating Patterns In Convolution Neural Network Parameters Using Probabilistic Support Vector Machines, Yuqiu Zhang

McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations

Artificial neural networks(ANNs) are recognized as high-performance models for classification problems. They have proved to be efficient tools for many of today's applications like automatic driving, image and video recognition and restoration, big-data analysis. However, high performance deep neural networks have millions of parameters, and the iterative training procedure thus involves a very high computational cost. This research attempts to study the relationships between parameters in convolutional neural networks(CNNs). I assume there exists a certain relation between adjacent convolutional layers and proposed a machine learning model(MLM) that can be trained to represent this relation. The MLM's generalization ability is evaluated …
