When Can We Be Sure That Measurement Results Are Consistent: 1-D Interval Case And Beyond, Hani Dbouk, Steffen Schön, Ingo Neumann, Vladik Kreinovich
When Can We Be Sure That Measurement Results Are Consistent: 1-D Interval Case And Beyond, Hani Dbouk, Steffen Schön, Ingo Neumann, Vladik Kreinovich
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
In many practical situations, measurements are characterized by interval uncertainty -- namely, based on each measurement result, the only information that we have about the actual value of the measured quantity is that this value belongs to some interval. If several such intervals -- corresponding to measuring the same quantity -- have an empty intersection, this means that at least one of the corresponding measurement results is an outlier, caused by a malfunction of the measuring instrument. From the purely mathematical viewpoint, if the intersection is non-empty, there is no reason to be suspicious, but from the practical viewpoint, if …

Why Lasso, Ridge Regression, And En: Explanation Based On Soft Computing, Woraphon Yamaka, Hamza Alkhatib, Ingo Neumann, Vladik Kreinovich
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
In many practical situations, observations and measurement results are consistent with many different models -- i.e., the corresponding problem is ill-posed. In such situations, a reasonable idea is to take into account that the values of the corresponding parameters should not be too large; this idea is known as {\it regularization}. Several different regularization techniques have been proposed; empirically the most successful are LASSO method, when we bound the sum of absolute values of the parameters, ridge regression method, when we bound the sum of the squares, and a EN method in which these two approaches are combined. In this …
Deep Learning Methods For Efficient Image Coding, Zachary Daniel Bellay
Deep Learning Methods For Efficient Image Coding, Zachary Daniel Bellay
Computer Science and Engineering Master's Theses
Video data makes up 58% of all internet traffic and is growing as self-driving car cameras, 4K televisions, and video surveillance systems continue to come online. Traditional heuristics based image and video codecs such as JPEG and HEVC have been successful thus far, however, these approaches lack the ability to leverage big data to gain massive insights. Six deep learning based approaches are proposed to tackle efficient image/video compression and image compression for machine classification.
Fitness Plug, Evan Lee Ashley
Fitness Plug, Evan Lee Ashley
Computer Engineering
My parents only allowed me to play videogames or watch television for a certain number of minutes or hours per day. By limiting screen time, they encouraged me to be active and find other things to do outside of television or videogames. The Fitness Plug aims to do both by converting time exercised to entertainment time; you can only watch television or play videogames for as long as you have exercised.

According to the new trust relation reconstruction rules, a trust attack path inference algorithm was proposed to make the attacker knowing the changes of harmfulness when attacking the components, thus the attacker could decide the attack direction. The maximal …

Simulation Analysis On Ballistic Deflection Of Projectile Obliquely Penetrating Into Concrete, Jianfeng Xue, Peihui Shen, Xiaoming Wang
Journal of System Simulation
Abstract: In order to study the trajectory deflection law of projectiles obliquely penetrating into concrete targets, based on the theory of rigid body kinematics and cavity expansion, the penetration motion differential equations of ogive-nosed projectile were established. The variation rules of trajectory offset and invasion depth were given in different initial conditions through the programming calculation and numerical simulation by MATALB and ANSYS-LYNA software. The calculation results agree well with experimental data. The results show that the influence of penetration depth and deflection angle increase with the oblique angle increasing. The influence of ballistic deflection decreases with the …

Robust Drone Landing, Alvin Xuan Quan Chui
Computer Engineering
The growth of drone technology goes with the demands of computer vision. Computer vision provides opportunities for developers to design and create, giving rise to a new innovation. It is also a basis for a full autonomous system when implemented with an intelligent agent. Surveillance drones are installed with cameras, and cameras are the most common approach to computer vision. However, a high-resolution camera with great performance could be expensive, while other low-cost cameras might lack reading accuracy. To improve the performances and maximize a camera’s capability, many different object trackers come into play. This paper will investigate and study …

Computer Engineering
Quality testing is an important part of the wine industry. Without proper quality control, thousands of dollars could be wasted on bottling and recalling hundreds of gallons of wine. Due to this, labs are set up that collect wine samples from the tanks in a wine production plant and test them. A big part of this testing is determining exactly what tanks need to be tested and what tanks are at risk. My project aims to help automate this task by collecting data from the tanks wirelessly and keeping track of simple indicators such as pH and temperature. Automating this …
