Adaptive Canonical Correlation Analysis For Harmonic Stimulation Frequencies Recognition In Ssvep-Based Bcis, Sahar Sadeghi, Ali Maleki
Adaptive Canonical Correlation Analysis For Harmonic Stimulation Frequencies Recognition In Ssvep-Based Bcis, Sahar Sadeghi, Ali Maleki
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Steady-state visual evoked potential (SSVEP) is the brain's response to quickly repetitive visual stimulus with a certain frequency. To increase the information transfer rate (ITR) in SSVEP-based systems, due to the frequency resolution restriction, we are forced to broaden the frequency range, which causes harmonic frequencies to come into the stimulation frequency range. Conventional canonical correlation analysis (CCA) may be associated with error for SSVEP frequency recognition at stimulation frequencies with harmonic relations. The number of harmonics considered to construct reference signals are determined adaptively; for frequencies whose second harmonic exists in the frequency range, two harmonics are used, and …

Extracting Accent Information From Urdu Speech For Forensic Speaker Recognition, Falak Tahir, Sajid Saleem, Ayaz Ahmad
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
This paper presents a new method for extraction of accent information from Urdu speech signals. Accent is used in speaker recognition system especially in forensic cases and plays a vital role in discriminating people of different groups, communities and origins due to their different speaking styles. The proposed method is based on Gaussian mixture model-universal background model (GMM-UBM), mel-frequency cepstral coefficients (MFCC), and a data augmentation (DA) process. The DA process appends features to base MFCC features and improves the accent extraction and forensic speaker recognition performances of GMM-UBM. Experiments are performed on an Urdu forensic speaker corpus. The experimental …
Sentence Similarity Using Weighted Path And Similarity Matrices, Reza Javadzadeh, Morteza Zahedi, Marziea Rahimi
Sentence Similarity Using Weighted Path And Similarity Matrices, Reza Javadzadeh, Morteza Zahedi, Marziea Rahimi
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Sentence similarity is the task of assessing how similar the two snippets of text are. Similarity techniques are used extensively in clustering, summarization, classification, plagiarism detection etc. Due to a small set of vocabularies, sentence similarity is considered to be a difficult problem in natural language processing. There are two issues in solving this problem: (1) Which similarity techniques to be used for word pair similarity and (2) How to generalize that to sentence pairs. We have used the weighted path, a WordNet-based similarity assessment, and the paraphrase database to obtain word pair similarity values. Thereafter, we extracted maximum values …

Segmented Character Recognition Using Curvature-Based Global Image Feature, Belaynesh Chekol, Numan Çelebi̇, Tuğrul Taşci
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Character recognition in natural scene images is a fundamental prerequisite for many text-based image analysis tasks. Generally, local image features are employed widely to recognize characters segmented from natural scene images. In this paper, a curvature-based global image feature and description for segmented character recognition is proposed. This feature is entirely dependent on the curvature information of the image pixels. The proposed feature is employed for segmented character recognition using Chars74k dataset and ICDAR 2003 character recognition dataset. From the two datasets, 1068 and 540 images of characters, respectively, are randomly chosen and 573-dimensional feature vector is synthesized per image. …

A Hybrid Of Fuzzy Theory And Quadratic Function For Estimating And Refining Transmission Map, Jyun-Yu Jhang, Chengjian Lin, Kuu-Young Young, Chin-Teng Lin
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
In photographs captured in outdoor environments, particles in the air cause light attenuation and degrade image quality. This effect is especially obvious in hazy environments. In this study, a fuzzy theory is proposed to estimate the transmission map of a single image. To overcome the problem of oversaturation in dehazed images, a quadratic-function-based method is proposed to refine the transmission map. In addition, the color vector of the atmospheric light is estimated using the top 1\% of the brightest light area. Finally, the dehazed image is reconstructed using the transmission map and the estimated atmospheric light. Experimental results demonstrate that …
Application Of Fuzzy Logic On Astronomical Images' Focus Measures, Alaa Hamdy, Farag Elnagahy, Islam Helmy
Application Of Fuzzy Logic On Astronomical Images' Focus Measures, Alaa Hamdy, Farag Elnagahy, Islam Helmy
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Focus accuracy is an essential factor that affects the quality of astronomical observations. The accurate measurement of celestial objects' properties depends on focus. Automatic focusing is necessary for celestial imaging systems. This paper presents a modified focus measure operator. It also proposes the use of fuzzy logic to transform images because of its tolerance of imprecise and incomplete data. The focus operators are applied to two sequences of star clusters' observations. The experimental results show that the suggested measure's overall score exceeds those of previous operators.
A Novel Hardware-Efficient Spatial Orientation Tree-Based Image Compression Algorithm And Its Field Programmable Gate Array Implementation, Mohd Rafi Lone, Najeeb-Ud-Din Hakim
A Novel Hardware-Efficient Spatial Orientation Tree-Based Image Compression Algorithm And Its Field Programmable Gate Array Implementation, Mohd Rafi Lone, Najeeb-Ud-Din Hakim
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Set partitioning in hierarchical trees (SPIHT) has become a popular research topic for more than a decade now. This is because it is simple, besides having compression efficiency close to the state-of-the-art JPEG2000 standard. The main drawback of SPIHT is that it uses three lists to store addresses of coefficients during its operation. These lists are dynamic and in worst cases need to store more number of addresses than total coefficients. In this work, a novel hardware-efficient spatial orientation tree-based algorithm is proposed and its hardware implementation is carried out. The wavelet transformed image is partitioned into 2 $\times$ 2 …

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Morphological analysis is an important component of natural language processing systems like spelling correction tools, parsers, machine translation systems, and dictionary tools. In this paper, we present TRMOR, a morphological analyzer for Turkish, which uses the SFST tool (Stuttgart Finite-State Transducer). TRMOR can be freely used for academic research (see http://www.cis.uni-muenchen.de/~schmid/tools/SFST/). It covers a large part of Turkish morphology including inflection, derivation, and some compounding. It uses morphotactic and morphophonological rules and a stem lexicon. We describe the morphological structure of Turkish, explain the phonological and morphological rules implemented in TRMOR, evaluate the system, and test it in special cases. …

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Global warming, increase in environmental pollution, and high cost of electrical power generation using fossil fuels are considered the most important reasons for the application of renewable energy power plants (REPPs) around the world. In recent years, a new generation of REPPs called hybrid renewable energy power plants (HREPPs) has been implemented in order to have higher efficiency and reliability than conventional REPPs such as wind power plants and photovoltaic power plants. The HREPPs include two or more renewable energy generation units such as wind turbine generation units, and PV generation units. In case of high penetration of these types …
Bidding Strategy For Generators Considering Ramp Rates In A Day-Ahead Electricity Market, Satyendra Singh, Manoj Fozdar
Bidding Strategy For Generators Considering Ramp Rates In A Day-Ahead Electricity Market, Satyendra Singh, Manoj Fozdar
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
In a day-ahead electricity market, competitive bidding strategy plays a vital role for power suppliers to maximize their profit. In this type of market, each power supplier submits a set of hourly production prices and offers capacity for the next period. The market operator, after receiving this data along with forecasted hourly load from the demand side, allocates production output to each unit. Power suppliers face the problem in trading their offers in the market, due to the uncertain behavior of competitive power suppliers and power demand. Therefore, the power supplier requires a suitable bidding strategy for handling uncertainty in …

A Robust Smes Control For Enhancing Stability Of Distribution Systems Fed From Intermittent Wind Power Generation, Sayed Said, Mokhtar Aly, Balint Hartmann
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
The voltage and frequency stability issues of power systems are the main challenges that arise from high penetration levels of wind energy systems. This paper presents an effective solution for voltage and frequency stability problems by using a superconducting magnetic energy storage (SMES) system controlled with a fuzzy logic controller (FLC). The proposed control system can suppress the voltage and frequency fluctuations due to the high variations of wind speed. In addition, the proposed control system is suitable for both balanced and unbalanced distribution systems with high penetration levels of wind turbines (WTs). A squirrel cage induction generator (SCIG) is …

Heat Flux Capacity Measurement And Improvement For The Test Of Superconducting Logic Circuits In Closed-Cycle Cryostats, Sasan Razmkhah, Ali̇ Bozbey
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
With the current progress of superconducting integrated circuits, circuit complexities have reached more than 100,000 Josephson junctions. At the laboratory environment, circuit tests are generally being conducted at liquid Helium environments. With the commercialization of the superconducting integrated circuit-based systems and/or price increase of liquid Helium, utilization of the closed-cycle systems will be inevitable. Even though it is possible to implement closed-cycle systems with quite substantial excess cooling powers after all the wirings and peripheral circuits, one point not to be overlooked is the power density at the superconducting chips. We have observed that the circuits designed for operation at …
Investigation Of The Mechanism Of Transport Across The Poly/Monocrystalline Silicon Interface In Polysilicon-Emitter Bipolar Transistors Based On Variations In The Interface Treatment Process, Shahriar Jamasb
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Electrical transport across the poly/monocrystalline silicon (poly-Si/c-Si) interface has been investigated by introducing variations in the interface treatment process affecting the thickness of the native oxide layer formed on the silicon surface. The I-V relationship characterizing the resistance associated with this interface is extracted using an improved open-collector method, which eliminates the inherent nonlinearity arising from the reverse active characteristics of the bipolar transistor. The nonohmic behavior of the interface at low electric fields is demonstrated to be consistent with direct tunneling through a rectangular barrier presented by an ultrathin interfacial oxide layer. An approximate tunnel junction model is proposed …

Diffusive Representation Modelling Thermal And Overvoltage For Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor Fed By Voltage Inverter, Khaled Ben Smida, Moncef Ben Smida, Brahim Mrabet
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Life of electric machines is very sensitive to temperature increases especially due to the fragility of their windings as well as to the overvoltage at the motor's terminals. Therefore, it is necessary to find the temperature in the most sensitive areas of the machine. It has been known for a long time that temperature rise is caused by the losses in the machine; thus, various models have been proposed. It has also been shown that the permanent magnet synchronous motor fed by a voltage inverter overheats more than the one supplied by a sinusoidal voltage. Indeed the permanent magnet synchronous …
A Novel Map-Merging Technique For Occupancy Grid-Based Maps Using Multiple Robots: A Semantic Approach, Aki̇f Durdu, Mehmet Korkmaz
A Novel Map-Merging Technique For Occupancy Grid-Based Maps Using Multiple Robots: A Semantic Approach, Aki̇f Durdu, Mehmet Korkmaz
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Map merging is a noteworthy phenomenon for cases such as search and rescue and disaster areas in which the duration is quite significant when gathering information about an environment. It is obvious that the total mapping time decreases if the number of agents (robots) increases. However, the use of multiple agents leads to problems such as task allocation schemes and the fusing of local maps. Examining the present methods, it is generally observed that the common features of local maps have been found and the global map is formed by obtaining related transformation between local maps. However, such implementations may …

A Distributed Load Balancing Algorithm For Deduplicated Storage, Prabavathy Balasundaram, Chitra Babu, Pradeep Rengaswamy
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
While deduplication brings the advantage of significant space savings in storage, it nevertheless incurs the overhead of maintaining huge metadata. Updating such huge metadata during the data migration that arises due to load balancing activity results in significant overhead. In order to reduce this metadata update overhead, this paper proposes a suitable alternate index that tracks the data blocks even when they migrate across the nodes without explicitly storing the location information. In addition, a virtual server-based load balancing (VSLB) algorithm has been proposed in order to reduce the migration overhead. The experimental results indicate that the proposed index reduces …

Exploiting Stochastic Petri Nets With Fuzzy Parameters To Predict Efficient Drug Combinations For Spinal Muscular Atrophy, Rza Bashi̇rov, Recep Duranay, Adi̇l Şeytanoğlu, Mani Mehraei, Ni̇met Akçay
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Randomness and uncertainty are two major problems one faces while modeling nonlinear dynamics of molecular systems. Stochastic and fuzzy methods are used to cope with these problems, but there is no consensus among researchers regarding which method should be used when. This is because the areas of applications of these methods are overlapping with differences in opinions. In the present work, we demonstrate how to use stochastic Petri nets with fuzzy parameters to manage random timing of biomolecular events and deal with the uncertainty of reaction rates in biological networks. The approach is demonstrated through a case study of simulation-based …

Employing clustering methods is the dominant method to maximize the WSN's lifetime, which is considered to be a major issue. Metaheuristic algorithms have attracted wide attention in the research area of clustering. In this paper, first a novel nature-inspired optimization algorithm based on the gravitational search algorithm (GSA) is defined. To control the exploitation and exploration capabilities of this algorithm, along with calculating the masses value, the tournament selection method is employed. Tournament size, the parameter of this method, is computed automatically using …
Application Of Multiscale Fuzzy Entropy Features For Multilevel Subject-Dependent Emotion Recognition, Hamzah Lotfalinezhad, Ali Maleki
Application Of Multiscale Fuzzy Entropy Features For Multilevel Subject-Dependent Emotion Recognition, Hamzah Lotfalinezhad, Ali Maleki
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Emotion recognition can be used in clinical and nonclinical situations. Despite previous works which mostly used time and frequency features of electroencephalogram (EEG) signals in subject-dependent emotion recognition issues, we used multiscale fuzzy entropy as a nonlinear dynamic feature. The EEG signals of the well-known Database for Emotion Analysis Using Physiological signals dataset was used for classification of two and three levels of emotions in arousal and valence space. The compound feature selection with a cost of average accuracy of support vector machine classifier was used to reduce feature dimensions. For subject-dependent systems, the proposed method is superior in comparison …

A Depth-Based Nearest Neighbor Algorithmfor High-Dimensional Data Classification, Sandhya Harikumar, Akhil A.S, Ramachandra Kaimal
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Nearest neighbor algorithms like k-nearest neighbors (kNN) are fundamental supervised learning techniques to classify a query instance based on class labels of its neighbors. However, quite often, huge volumes of datasets are not fully labeled and the unknown probability distribution of the instances may be uneven. Moreover, kNN suffers from challenges like curse of dimensionality, setting the optimal number of neighbors, and scalability for high-dimensional data. To overcome these challenges, we propose an improvised approach of classification via depth representation of subspace clusters formed from high-dimensional data. We offer a consistent and principled approach to dynamically choose the nearest neighbors …

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
The Internet of things increases information volume in computer networks and the concept of fog will help us to control this volume more efficiently. Scheduling resources in such an environment would be an NP-Hard problem. This article has studied the concept of scheduling in fog with Bayesian classification which could be applied to gain the task requirements like the processing ones. After classification, virtual machines will be created in accordance with the predicted requirements. The ifogsim simulator has been applied to study our fog-based Bayesian classification scheduling (FBCS) method performance in an EEG tractor application. Algorithms have been evaluated on …

Evaluating The Attributes Of Remote Sensing Image Pixels For Fast K-Means Clustering, Ali̇ Sağlam, Nurdan Baykan
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Clustering process is an important stage for many data mining applications. In this process, data elements are grouped according to their similarities. One of the most known clustering algorithms is the k-means algorithm. The algorithm initially requires the number of clusters as a parameter and runs iteratively. Many remote sensing image processing applications usually need the clustering stage like many image processing applications. Remote sensing images provide more information about the environments with the development of the multispectral sensor and laser technologies. In the dataset used in this paper, the infrared (IR) and the digital surface maps (DSM) are also …

This study presents a method for designing--by a genetic algorithm, without manual intervention--the feature learning architecture for classification of sleep stages from a single EEG channel, when using a convolutional neural network called GACNN SleepTuneNet. Two EEG electrode positions were selected, namely FP2-F4 and FPz-Cz, from two available datasets. Twenty-five generations were involved in diagnosis without hand-crafted features, to learn the architecture for classification of sleep stages based on AASM standard. Based on the results, our model not only achieved the highest classification accuracy, but it also distinguished the sleep stages based on either of the two EEG electrode signals, …
Parallel Algorithms For Computing Sparse Matrix Permanents, Kamer Kaya
Parallel Algorithms For Computing Sparse Matrix Permanents, Kamer Kaya
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
The permanent is an important characteristic of a matrix and it has been used in many applications. Unfortunately, it is a hard to compute and hard to approximate the immanant. For dense/full matrices, the fastest exact algorithm, Ryser, has O($2^{n-1}$n) complexity. In this work, a parallel algorithm, SkipPer, is proposed to exploit the sparsity within the input matrix as much as possible. SkipPer restructures the matrix to reduce the overall work, skips the unnecessary steps, and employs a coarse-grain, shared-memory parallelization with dynamic scheduling. The experiments show that SkipPer increases the performance of exact permanent computation up to 140 compared …

Rough Fuzzy Cuckoo Search For Triclustering Microarray Gene Expression Data, Swathypriyadharsini Palaniswamy, Premalatha K
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Analyzing time series microarray gene expression data is a computational challenge due to its three-dimensional characteristics. Triclustering techniques are applied to three-dimensional data for mining similarly expressed genes under a subset of conditions and time points. In this work, a novel rough fuzzy cuckoo search algorithm is proposed for triclustering genes across samples and time points simultaneously. By applying the upper and lower approximation of rough set theory and the objective function of fuzzy k-means, rough fuzzy k-means was incorporated into a cuckoo search to handle the uncertainty of the data. The proposed method was applied to three real-life time …
