Goals can be described as the user's desired state of the agent and the world and are satisfied when the agent and the world are altered in such a way that the present state matches the desired state. For physical agents, they must act in the world to alter it in a series of individual atomic actions. Traditionally, agents use planning to create a chain of actions each of which altering the current world state and yielding a new one until the final action yields the desired goal state. Once this goal state has been achieved, the goal is said …

Due to current market forces, leading-edge semiconductor fabrication plants have moved outside of the US. While this is not a problem at first glance, when it comes to security-sensitive applications, over-production, device cloning, or design alteration becomes a possibility. Since these vulnerabilities exist during the fabrication phase, a Reverse Engineering (RE) step must be introduced to help ensure secure device operation. This thesis proposes several unique methods and a collection of tools to ensure trust assurance in integrated circuit design by detecting fabrication flaws and possible hardware Trojans using several image processing techniques; fused into a singular view of the …

Dementia caregiver burnout is detrimental to both the familial caregiver and their loved ones with dementia. As the population of older adults increases, both the number of individuals with dementia and their corresponding caregivers increase as well. Thus, we are interested in developing a potential tool to non-invasively detect signs of caregiver burnout using a mobile application combined with machine learning. Hence, the mobile application "Caregiver Assessment using Smart Technology" (CAST) was developed which personalizes a word scramble game. The CAST application utilizes a heuristically constructed Fuzzy Inference System (FIS) optimized via a Genetic Algorithm (GA) to provide an individualized …

Development Of A Human-Ai Teaming Based Mobile Language Learning Solution For Dual Language Learners In Early And Special Educations, Saurabh Shukla

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Learning English as a secondary language is often an overwhelming challenge for dual language learners (DLLs), whose first language (L1) is not English, especially for children in early education (PreK-3 age group). These early DLLs need to devote a considerable amount of time learning to speak and read the language, in order to gain the language proficiency to function and compete in the classroom. Fear of embarrassment when mispronouncing words in front of others may drive them to remain silent; effectively hampering their participation in the class and overall curricular growth. The process of learning a new language can benefit …

Using Natural Language Processing And Machine Learning For Analyzing Clinical Notes In Sickle Cell Disease Patients, Shufa Khizra Jan 2018

Using Natural Language Processing And Machine Learning For Analyzing Clinical Notes In Sickle Cell Disease Patients, Shufa Khizra

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) is a hereditary disorder in red blood cells that can lead to excruciating pain episodes. SCD causes the normal red blood cells to distort its shape and turn into sickle shape. The distorted shape makes the hemoglobin inflexible and stick to the walls of the vessels thereby obstructing the free flow of blood and eventually making the tissues suffer from lack of oxygen. The lack of oxygen causes serious problems including Acute Chest Syndrome (ACS), stroke, infection, organ damage, and over the lifetime an SCD can harm a persons spleen, brain, kidneys, eyes, bones. Sickling of …

Resource Optimization In Wireless Sensor Networks For An Improved Field Coverage And Cooperative Target Tracking, Husam Sweidan Jan 2018

Resource Optimization In Wireless Sensor Networks For An Improved Field Coverage And Cooperative Target Tracking, Husam Sweidan

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

There are various challenges that face a wireless sensor network (WSN) that mainly originate from the limited resources a sensor node usually has. A sensor node often relies on a battery as a power supply which, due to its limited capacity, tends to shorten the life-time of the node and the network as a whole. Other challenges arise from the limited capabilities of the sensors/actuators a node is equipped with, leading to complication like a poor coverage of the event, or limited mobility in the environment. This dissertation deals with the coverage problem as well as the limited power and …

Implementing Write Compression In Flash Memory Using Zeckendorf Two-Round Rewriting Codes, Vincent T. Druschke Jan 2018

Implementing Write Compression In Flash Memory Using Zeckendorf Two-Round Rewriting Codes, Vincent T. Druschke

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

Flash memory has become increasingly popular as the underlying storage technology for high-performance nonvolatile storage devices. However, while flash offers several benefits over alternative storage media, a number of limitations still exist within the current technology. One such limitation is that programming (altering a bit from its default value) and erasing (returning a bit to its default value) are asymmetric operations in flash memory devices: a flash memory can be programmed arbitrarily, but can only be erased in relatively large batches of storage bits called blocks, with block sizes ranging from 512K up to several megabytes. This creates a situation …

Humanfall detection has attracted broad attentions as sensors and mobile devices are increasingly adopted in real-life scenarios such as smart homes. The complexity of activities in home environments pose severe challenges to the fall detection research with respect to the detection accuracy. We propose a collaborative detection platform that combines two subsystems: a threshold-based fall detection subsystem using mobile phones and a support vector machine (SVM)-based fall detection subsystem using Kinects. Both subsystems have their respective confidence models and the platform detects falls by fusing the data of both subsystems using two methods: the logical rules-based and D-S evidence fusion …

Integrated Reward Scheme And Surge Pricing In A Ride Sourcing Market, Hai Yang, Chaoyi Shao, Hai Wang, Jieping Ye Jan 2018

Integrated Reward Scheme And Surge Pricing In A Ride Sourcing Market, Hai Yang, Chaoyi Shao, Hai Wang, Jieping Ye

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Surge pricing is commonly used in on-demand ride-sourcing platforms (e.g., Uber, Lyft and Didi) to dynamically balance demand and supply. However, since the price for ride service cannot be unlimited, there is usually a reasonable or legitimate range of prices in practice. Such a constrained surge pricing strategy fails to balance demand and supply in certain cases, e.g., even adopting the maximum allowed price cannot reduce the demand to an affordable level during peak hours. In addition, the practice of surge pricing is controversial and has stimulated long debate regarding its pros and cons. In this paper, to address the …

Design Of A Machine Vision Camera For Spatial Augmented Reality, Matt Phillip Ruffner Jan 2018

Design Of A Machine Vision Camera For Spatial Augmented Reality, Matt Phillip Ruffner

Theses and Dissertations--Electrical and Computer Engineering

Structured Light Imaging (SLI) is a means of digital reconstruction, or Three-Dimensional (3D) scanning, and has uses that span many disciplines. A projector, camera and Personal Computer (PC) are required to perform such 3D scans. Slight variances in synchronization between these three devices can cause malfunctions in the process due to the limitations of PC graphics processors as real-time systems. Previous work used a Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) to both drive the projector and trigger the camera, eliminating these timing issues, but still needing an external camera. This thesis proposes the incorporation of the camera with the FPGA SLI …

Intelligent Uav Scouting For Field Condition Monitoring, Hasan Seyyedhasani Jan 2018

Intelligent Uav Scouting For Field Condition Monitoring, Hasan Seyyedhasani

Theses and Dissertations--Electrical and Computer Engineering

Precision agriculture requires detailed and timely information about field condition. In less than the short flight time a UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) can provide, an entire field can be scanned at the highest allowed altitude. The resulting NDVI (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index) imagery can then be used to classify each point in the field using a FIS (Fuzzy Inference System). This identifies areas that are expected to be similar, but only closer inspection can quantify and diagnose crop properties. In the remaining flight time, the goal is to scout a set of representative points maximizing the quality of actionable information …

For this target population to adopt such technology successfully, it is important to ensure that they do not experience usability barriers. This research uses HCI/HRI concepts and technology design principles for older adults to design, develop and test telepresence user interfaces (UI). This addresses the following research questions: 1): What are the essential usability and privacy-enhanced features needed to inform the design and development …

Authenticating Users With 3d Passwords Captured By Motion Sensors, Jing Tian Jan 2018

Authenticating Users With 3d Passwords Captured By Motion Sensors, Jing Tian

Theses and Dissertations

Authentication plays a key role in securing various resources including corporate facilities or electronic assets. As the most used authentication scheme, knowledgebased authentication is easy to use but its security is bounded by how much a user can remember. Biometrics-based authentication requires no memorization but ‘resetting’ a biometric password may not always be possible. Thus, we propose study several behavioral biometrics (i.e., mid-air gestures) for authentication which does not have the same privacy or availability concerns as of physiological biometrics.

In this dissertation, we first propose a user-friendly authentication system Kin- Write that allows users to choose arbitrary, short and …

Electrons Dynamics Control By Shaping Femtosecond Laser Pulses In Micro/Nanofabrication: Modeling, Method, Measurement And Application, Lan Jiang, An-Dong Wang, Bo Li, Tian-Hong Cui, Yong-Feng Lu Jan 2018

Electrons Dynamics Control By Shaping Femtosecond Laser Pulses In Micro/Nanofabrication: Modeling, Method, Measurement And Application, Lan Jiang, An-Dong Wang, Bo Li, Tian-Hong Cui, Yong-Feng Lu

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications

During femtosecond laser fabrication, photons are mainly absorbed by electrons, and the subsequent energy transfer from electrons to ions is of picosecond order. Hence, lattice motion is negligible within the femtosecond pulse duration, whereas femtosecond photon-electron interactions dominate the entire fabrication process. Therefore, femtosecond laser fabrication must be improved by controlling localized transient electron dynamics, which poses a challenge for measuring and controlling at the electron level during fabrication processes. Pump-probe spectroscopy presents a viable solution, which can be used to observe electron dynamics during a chemical reaction. In fact, femtosecond pulse durations are shorter than many physical/chemical characteristic times, …

Ears-Dm: Efficient Auto Correction Retrieval Scheme For Data Management In Edge Computing, Kai Fan, Jie Yin, Kuan Zhang, Hui Li, Yintang Wang Jan 2018

Ears-Dm: Efficient Auto Correction Retrieval Scheme For Data Management In Edge Computing, Kai Fan, Jie Yin, Kuan Zhang, Hui Li, Yintang Wang

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications

Edge computing is an extension of cloud computing that enables messages to be acquired and processed at low cost. Many terminal devices are being deployed in the edge network to sense and deal with the massive data. By migrating part of the computing tasks from the original cloud computing model to the edge device, the message is running on computing resources close to the data source. The edge computing model can effectively reduce the pressure on the cloud computing center and lower the network bandwidth consumption. However, the security and privacy issues in edge computing are worth noting. In this …

Optimal Computational Power Allocation In Multi-Access Mobile Edge Computing For Blockchain, Yuan Wu, Xiangxu Chen, Jiajun Shi, Kejie Ni, Liping Qian, Liang Huang, Kuan Zhang Jan 2018

Optimal Computational Power Allocation In Multi-Access Mobile Edge Computing For Blockchain, Yuan Wu, Xiangxu Chen, Jiajun Shi, Kejie Ni, Liping Qian, Liang Huang, Kuan Zhang

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications

Blockchain has emerged as a decentralized and trustable ledger for recording and storing digital transactions. The mining process of Blockchain, however, incurs a heavy computational workload for miners to solve the proof-of-work puzzle (i.e., a series of the hashing computation), which is prohibitive from the perspective of the mobile terminals (MTs). The advanced multi-access mobile edge computing (MEC), which enables the MTs to offload part of the computational workloads (for solving the proof-of-work) to the nearby edge-servers (ESs), provides a promising approach to address this issue. By offloading the computational workloads via multi-access MEC, the MTs can effectively increase their …

Effect Of Weld Nugget Size On Failure Mode And Mechanical Properties Of Microscale Resistance Spot Welds On Ti–1al–1mn Ultrathin Foils, Feng Chen, Shiding Sun, Zhenwu Ma, G Q. Tong, Xiang Huang Jan 2018

Effect Of Weld Nugget Size On Failure Mode And Mechanical Properties Of Microscale Resistance Spot Welds On Ti–1al–1mn Ultrathin Foils, Feng Chen, Shiding Sun, Zhenwu Ma, G Q. Tong, Xiang Huang

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications

We use tensile–shear tests to investigate the failure modes of Ti–1Al–1Mn microscale resistance spot welds and to determine how the failure mode affects the microstructure, microhardness profile, and mechanical performance. Two different failure modes were revealed: interfacial failure mode and pullout failure mode. The welds that fail by pullout failure mode have much better mechanical properties than those that fail by interfacial failure mode. The results show that weld nugget size is also a principal factor that determines the failure mode of microscale resistance spot welds. A minimum weld nugget size exists above which all specimens fail by pullout failure …

Metasurface Base On Uneven Layered Fractal Elements For Ultra-Wideband Rcs Reduction, Jianxun Su, Yueyang Cui, Zengrui Li, Yaoqing (Lamar) Yang, Yongxing Che, Hongcheng Yin Jan 2018

Metasurface Base On Uneven Layered Fractal Elements For Ultra-Wideband Rcs Reduction, Jianxun Su, Yueyang Cui, Zengrui Li, Yaoqing (Lamar) Yang, Yongxing Che, Hongcheng Yin

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications

A novel metasurface based on uneven layered fractal elements is designed and fabricated for ultra-wideband radar cross section (RCS) reduction in this paper. The proposed metasurface consists of two fractal subwavelength elements with different layer thickness. The reflection phase difference of 180 (±37) between two unit cells covers an ultra-wide frequency range. Ultra-wideband RCS reduction results from the phase cancellation between two local waves produced by these two unit cells. The diffuse scattering of electromagnetic (EM) waves is caused by the randomized phase distribution, leading to a low monostatic and bistatic RCS simultaneously. This metasurface can achieve …

Comparative Study On Various Dielectric Barriers And Their Effect On Breakdown Voltage, Elham Foruzan, Amir A. S. Akmal, Kaveh Niayesh, Jeremy Lin, Desh Deepak Sharma

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications

Non-pressurised air is extensively used as basic insulation medium in high-voltage equipment. Unfortunately, an inherent property of air-insulated design is that the system tends to become physically large. On the other hand, the application of dielectric barriers can increase the breakdown voltage and therefore decrease the size of the equipment. In this study, the impact of dielectric barriers on breakdown voltage enhancement is investigated under both direct current (dc) and alternating current (ac) applied voltages. For this purpose, three kinds of dielectric barriers in two different high-voltage electrode structures are investigated. In the first structure, several experiments are carried out …
