Programming languages like Python, JavaScript, and Ruby are becoming increasingly popular due to their dynamic capabilities. These languages are often much easier to learn than other, statically type checked, languages such as C++ or Rust. Unfortunately, these dynamic languages come at the cost of losing compile-time optimizations. Python is arguably the most popular language for data scientists and researchers in the artificial intelligence and machine learning communities. As this research becomes increasingly popular, and the problems these researchers face become increasingly computationally expensive, questions are being raised about the performance of languages like Python. Language features found in Python, more …

Manufacturing ultralight and mechanical reliable materials has been a long-time challenge. Ceramicbased mechanical metamaterials provide significant opportunities to reverse their brittle nature and unstable mechanical properties and have great potential as strong, ultralight, and ultrastiff materials. However, the failure of ceramics nanolattice and degradation of strength/modulus with decreasing density are caused by buckling of the struts and failure of the nodes within the nanolattices, especially during cyclic loading. Here, we explore a new class of 3D ceramic-based metamaterials with a high strength–density ratio, stiffness, recoverability, cyclability, and optimal scaling factor. Deformation mode of the fabricated nanolattices has been engineered through …

Computer Engineering
This paper seeks to describe the process of developing a new FPGA architecture from nothing, both in terms of knowledge about FPGAs and in initial design material. Specifically, this project set out to design an FPGA architecture which can implement a simple state machine type design with 10 inputs, 10 outputs and 10 states. The open source Verilog-to-Routing FPGA CAD flow tool was used in order to synthesize, place, and route HDL files onto the architecture. This project was completed in terms of the spirit of the original goals of implementing an FPGA from scratch. Although, the project resulted in …
Tracking Eye Movements Over Source Code, Faith Chan
Tracking Eye Movements Over Source Code, Faith Chan
Computer Engineering
Studies on software developers’ behavior guide the development of tools that facilitate source code reading and reviewing. Eye trackers have allowed researchers to study this behavior in more detail–to pinpoint where the developer is looking, or even to detect which source code element the developer is viewing. However, systems that map gaze to characteristics as specific as source code elements are often expensive, either because of the cost of compatible eye trackers or because of the cost of the required software. This project aims to use existing technology to create a lower-cost system that provides information on the source code …
Bicycle Power Meter, Andrew Mcguan
Bicycle Power Meter, Andrew Mcguan
Computer Engineering
A power meter is a cycling training tool used to record the power a rider is outputting. This is very useful to athletes who regularly do bike workouts, because the power output is a consistent measure of the rider’s effort level, and is not affected by outside factors such as wind or road gradient. If a cyclist does a workout with the intent to carry a certain speed for a certain amount of time, a strong headwind will slow them down and make them work harder to maintain the same speed, defeating the goal of the workout. When a power …
Automated Pruning Of Greenhouse Indeterminate Tomato Plants, Joey M. Angeja
Automated Pruning Of Greenhouse Indeterminate Tomato Plants, Joey M. Angeja
Master's Theses
Pruning of indeterminate tomato plants is vital for a profitable yield and it still remains a manual process. There has been research in automated pruning of grapevines, trees, and other plants, but tomato plants have yet to be explored. Wage increases are contributing to the depleting profits of greenhouse tomato farmers. Rises in population are the driving force behind the need for efficient growing techniques. The major contribution of this thesis is a computer vision algorithm for detecting greenhouse tomato pruning points without the use of depth sensors. Given an up-close 2-D image of a tomato stem with the background …

A Comparative Study Of Feature Detection Methods For Auv Localization, Andrew Y. Kim
A Comparative Study Of Feature Detection Methods For Auv Localization, Andrew Y. Kim
Master's Theses
Underwater localization is a difficult task when it comes to making the system autonomous due to the unpredictable environment. The fact that radio signals such as GPS cannot be transmitted through water makes autonomous movement and localization underwater even more challenging. One specific method that is widely used for autonomous underwater navigation applications is Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM), a technique in which a map is created and updated while localizing the vehicle within the map. In SLAM, feature detection is used in landmark extraction and data association by examining each pixel and differentiating landmarks pixels from those of the …
Mastering The Game Of Gomoku Without Human Knowledge, Yuan Wang
Mastering The Game Of Gomoku Without Human Knowledge, Yuan Wang
Master's Theses
Gomoku, also called Five in a row, is one of the earliest checkerboard games invented by humans. For a long time, it has brought countless pleasures to us. We humans, as players, also created a lot of skills in playing it. Scientists normalize and enter these skills into the computer so that the computer knows how to play Gomoku. However, the computer just plays following the pre-entered skills, it doesn’t know how to develop these skills by itself. Inspired by Google’s AlphaGo Zero, in this thesis, by combining the technologies of Monte Carlo Tree Search, Deep Neural Networks, and Reinforcement …

Dimensionality's Blessing: Clustering Images By Underlying Distribution, Wen-Yan Lin, Jian-Huang Lai, Siying Liu, Yasuyuki Matsushita
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Many high dimensional vector distances tend to a constant. This is typically considered a negative “contrastloss” phenomenon that hinders clustering and other machine learning techniques. We reinterpret “contrast-loss” as a blessing. Re-deriving “contrast-loss” using the law of large numbers, we show it results in a distribution’s instances concentrating on a thin “hyper-shell”. The hollow center means apparently chaotically overlapping distributions are actually intrinsically separable. We use this to develop distribution-clustering, an elegant algorithm for grouping of data points by their (unknown) underlying distribution. Distribution-clustering, creates notably clean clusters from raw unlabeled data, estimates the number of clusters for itself and …

Automatic Segmentation Of Trees In Dynamic Outdoor Environments, Amy Tabb, Henry P. Medeiros
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications
Segmentation in dynamic outdoor environments can be difficult when the illumination levels and other aspects of the scene cannot be controlled. Specifically in orchard and vineyard automation contexts, a background material is often used to shield a camera's field of view from other rows of crops. In this paper, we describe a method that uses superpixels to determine low texture regions of the image that correspond to the background material, and then show how this information can be integrated with the color distribution of the image to compute optimal segmentation parameters to segment objects of interest. Quantitative and qualitative experiments …
Design, Analysis And Optimization Of Visible Light Communications Based Indoor Access Systems For Mobile And Internet Of Things Applications, Sihua Shao
Dissertations
Demands for indoor broadband wireless access services are expected to outstrip the spectrum capacity in the near-term "spectrum crunch". Deploying additional femtocells to address "spectrum crunch" is cost-inefficient due to the "backhaul challenge" and the exorbitant system maintenance. According to an Alcatel-Lucent report, most mobile Internet access traffic happens indoors. To alleviate the "spectrum crunch" and the "backhaul challenge" problems, visible light communication (VLC) emerges as an attractive candidate for indoor wireless access in the 5G architecture. In particular, VLC utilizes LED or fluorescent lamps to send out imperceptible flickering light that can be captured by a smart phone camera …

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications
Background
Near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) is a high throughput technique that measures absorbance of specific wavelengths of light by biological samples and uses this information to classify the age of lab-reared mosquitoes as younger or older than seven days with an average accuracy greater than 80%. For NIRS to estimate ages of wild mosquitoes, a sample of wild mosquitoes with known age in days would be required to train and test the model. Mark-release-recapture is the most reliable method to produce wild-caught mosquitoes of known age in days. However, it is logistically demanding, time inefficient, subject to low recapture rates, …

Fault Identification And Location For Distribution Network With Distributed Generations, Wen Fan, Yuan Liao
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications
Power distribution networks with distributed generations may experience faults. It is essential to promptly locate the fault for fast repair and restoration. This paper presents a novel method for identifying the faulted section and accurate location of faults that occur on power distribution grid. Appropriate matrices are set up to represent meter locations on the grid and the topology of the grid. The voltage and current measurements obtained are utilized to decide the fault sections. Then fault location is determined by solving equations that link measurements and fault locations through bus impedance matrix. The method is applicable to both single …
Non-Mpm Mode Coding For Intra Prediction In Video Coding, Taru Kanchan
Non-Mpm Mode Coding For Intra Prediction In Video Coding, Taru Kanchan
Computer Science and Engineering Master's Theses
The High Efficiency Video Coding standard introduced thirty-five intra prediction modes. It employed a method based on three most probable modes (MPM) to improve intra mode coding. This method significantly improved the performance by extracting three MPMs out of the thirty-five intra modes. The Joint Video Exploration Team (JVET) defines sixty-seven intra prediction modes for a possible future video coding standard. In the latest JVET development, six MPMs are chosen, and the remaining sixty-one modes are divided into sixteen “selected” and forty-five “non-selected” modes. These non-MPM modes are coded using fixed length coding. This research focusses on finding more efficient …

Maseeh Summer Undergraduate Research Experience
The growth in the number of connected device usage has led to a rapidly increased data traffic on wireless network and the demand for access to high speed and stable Internet connection is becoming more prominent. However, current off the shelf wireless cards are not programmable or observable across layers of the standard protocol stack, which leads to poor practical performance. Thus, Wireless Open Access Research Platform (WARP), a scalable wireless platform providing programmable functionality at every layer of the network stack, has been used for the real-time implementation and improvement of 802.11 protocol.

An Exploration Of Software Defined Radio And Gnu Radio Companion For Use In Drone-To-Drone Communication, Amanda K. H. Voegtlin
Maseeh Summer Undergraduate Research Experience
In a world that increasingly relies on automation and intelligent robotics, there is a need for drones to expand their independence and adaptability in navigating their environments. One approach to this problem is the use of wireless communication between units in order to coordinate their sensor data and build real-time maps of the environments they are navigating. However, especially indoors, relying on a fixed transmission tower to provide data to the units faces connectivity challenges.
The purpose of this research was to determine the fitness of an on-drone assembly that uses the the NI B200mini software-defined radio board and Gnu …

Automating Knife-Edge Method Of Thz Beam Characterization, Christopher Charles Faber
Maseeh Summer Undergraduate Research Experience
The goal of this project is to create a time and cost-effective solution for THz beam profiling.
The knife edge method of beam characterization is a technique to verify the intensity profile of a beam involving traveling a blade orthogonal to the beam path and measuring transmission in successive steps. We use a vector network analyzer (VNA) to measure S21 transmission from a THz source. Manual implementation of this method was time-consuming and inefficient.
Project hardware includes an Arduino, a motor shield, and a ball screw linear rail with stepper motor actuator. Software was created in LabView and data is …

Binder Free Graphene Hybridized Fe3o4 Nanoparticles For Supercapacitor Applications, Nathan D. Jansen
Maseeh Summer Undergraduate Research Experience
In a world with increasing energy demands, the need for safe and mobile energy storage grows. There are a number of renewable energy sources that can be harvested, however peak demand and peak production times tend to not overlap. As the capabilities of collecting the energy grows so does the need to store the energy for later consumption. The two promising methods of storing energy are batteries or supercapacitors. Both technologies employ an electrode consisting of an active material bound to a current collector. This material participates in a redox reaction, storing charge electrochemically to later be used as energy, …

M. F. El-Kady and R. B. Kaner, “Scalable fabrication of high-power graphene micro-supercapacitors for flexible and on-chip energy storage,” Nature Communications, vol. 4, p. 1475, Feb. 2013.
Supercapacitors are electrical components that have higher energy density than regular capacitors. Currently, they are large and bulky which makes it hard to be implemented into smaller electronic devices or on-chip. In Scalable Fabrication of High-power Graphene Micro-supercapacitors for Flexible and On-chip Energy Storage, El-Kady and Kaner developed an inexpensive and reliable method for scaling down supercapacitors to be approximately 7.53 x 5.35 mm. To make the laser-scribed graphene (LSG) micro-supercapacitors, an aqueous …

Maseeh Summer Undergraduate Research Experience
Two decades since the first convolutional neural network was introduced the AI sub-domains of classification, regression and prediction still rely heavily on a few ML architectures despite their flaws of being hungry for data, time, and high-end hardware while still lacking generality. In order to achieve more general intelligence that can perform one-shot learning, create internal representations, and recognize subtle patterns it is necessary to look for new ML system frameworks. Research on the interface between neuroscience and computational statistics/machine learning has suggested that combined algorithms may increase AI robustness in the same way that separate brain regions specialize. In …
