Rams Onboard: Improving Employment Process, De-Shunda White, Yamil Boo Irizarry, Samuel Brazil

Capstone Design Expo Posters

In order for the Virginia Commonwealth University Engineering Human Resources department to provide seamless new hire integration, they need to upgrade their current post-hire information gathering techniques. Currently the HR department continues to provide paper forms and packets to new hires to fill out and return for review. This method requires over $30,000 in cost for materials and labor. The main goal of our project is to establish a way for newly hired employees to complete their new hire forms electronically through the VCU server.

By successfully executing our project we are moving VCU’s onboarding process to a completely paperless …

A Workload Balanced Mapreduce Framework On Gpu Platforms, Yue Zhang Jan 2015

A Workload Balanced Mapreduce Framework On Gpu Platforms, Yue Zhang

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

The MapReduce framework is a programming model proposed by Google to process large datasets. It is an efficient framework that can be used in many areas, such as social network, scientific research, electronic business, etc. Hence, more and more MapReduce frameworks are implemented on different platforms, including Phoenix (based on multicore CPU), MapCG (based on GPU), and StreamMR (based on GPU). However, these MapReduce frameworks have limitations, and they cannot handle the collision problem in the map phase, and the unbalanced workload problems in the reduce phase. To improve the performance of the MapReduce framework on GPGPUs, in this thesis, …

Searchblox Project Indexer Agent, Tri Nguyen, Tom Vaele, Zachary Johnson Jan 2015

Searchblox Project Indexer Agent, Tri Nguyen, Tom Vaele, Zachary Johnson

Capstone Design Expo Posters

In this digital world, access to information is essential. We need it and almost every day; Google, Bing, Yahoo, or one of these other major services that help us find what we’re looking for so we can use a resource or answer a simple question. SearchBlox, an enterprise elasticsearch toolkit which boasts a robust and easy to use indexing system for an array of MIME types lacks an essential capability: remoting. The scope of this problem requires the ability to efficiently index particularly voluminous, dense, or distributed file-systems to a centralized SearchBlox indexing server while keeping the services that clients …

Introduction To Mips Assembly Language Programming, Charles W. Kann Jan 2015

Introduction To Mips Assembly Language Programming, Charles W. Kann

Open Educational Resources

This book was written to introduce students to assembly language programming in MIPS. As with all assembly language programming texts, it covers basic operators and instructions, subprogram calling, loading and storing memory, program control, and the conversion of the assembly language program into machine code.

However this book was not written simply as a book on assembly language programming. The larger purpose of this text is to show how concepts in Higher Level Languages (HLL), such as Java or C/C++, are represented in assembly. By showing how program constructs from these HLL map into assembly, the concepts will be easier …

Impact Of Detector-Element Active-Area Shape And Fill Factor On Image Sampling, Restoration, And Super-Resolution, Russell C. Hardie, Douglas R. Droege, Alexander J. Dapore, Mark E. Greiner Jan 2015

Impact Of Detector-Element Active-Area Shape And Fill Factor On Image Sampling, Restoration, And Super-Resolution, Russell C. Hardie, Douglas R. Droege, Alexander J. Dapore, Mark E. Greiner

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

In many undersampled imaging systems, spatial integration from the individual detector elements is the dominant component of the system point spread function (PSF). Conventional focal plane arrays (FPAs) utilize square detector elements with a nearly 100% fill factor, where fill factor is defined as the fraction of the detector element area that is active in light detection. A large fill factor is generally considered to be desirable because more photons are collected for a given pitch, and this leads to a higher signal-to-noise-ratio (SNR). However, the large active area works against super-resolution (SR) image restoration by acting as an additional …

Generating sentences from a library of signs implemented through a sparse set of key frames derived from the segmental structure of a phonetic model of ASL has the advantage of flexibility and efficiency, but lacks the lifelike detail of motion capture. These difficulties are compounded when faced with real-time generation and display. This paper describes a technique for automatically adding realism without the expense of manually animating the requisite detail. The new technique layers transparently over and modifies the primary motions dictated by the segmental model, and does so with very little computational cost, enabling real-time production and display. The …

Collaborative Knowledge As A Service Applied To The Disaster Management Domain, Katarina Grolinger, Emna Mezghani, Miriam Am Capretz, Ernesto Exposito

Electrical and Computer Engineering Publications

Cloud computing offers services which promise to meet continuously increasing computing demands by using a large number of networked resources. However, data heterogeneity remains a major hurdle for data interoperability and data integration. In this context, a Knowledge as a Service (KaaS) approach has been proposed with the aim of generating knowledge from heterogeneous data and making it available as a service. In this paper, a Collaborative Knowledge as a Service (CKaaS) architecture is proposed, with the objective of satisfying consumer knowledge needs by integrating disparate cloud knowledge through collaboration among distributed KaaS entities. The NIST cloud computing reference architecture …

Energy Cost Forecasting For Event Venues, Katarina Grolinger, Andrea Zagar, Miriam Am Capretz, Luke Seewald

Electrical and Computer Engineering Publications

Electricity price, consumption, and demand forecasting has been a topic of research interest for a long time. The proliferation of smart meters has created new opportunities in energy prediction. This paper investigates energy cost forecasting in the context of entertainment event-organizing venues, which poses significant difficulty due to fluctuations in energy demand and wholesale electricity prices. The objective is to predict the overall cost of energy consumed during an entertainment event. Predictions are carried out separately for each event category and feature selection is used to select the most effective combination of event attributes for each category. Three machine learning …

A Discrete-Time Direct-Torque Control For Direct-Drive Pmsg-Based Wind Energy Conversion Systems, Zhe Zhang, Yue Zhao, Wei Qiao, Liyan Qu Jan 2015

A Discrete-Time Direct-Torque Control For Direct-Drive Pmsg-Based Wind Energy Conversion Systems, Zhe Zhang, Yue Zhao, Wei Qiao, Liyan Qu

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications

This paper proposes a novel flux space vector-based direct-torque control (DTC) scheme for permanent magnet synchronous generators (PMSGs) used in variable-speed direct drive wind energy conversion systems (WECSs). The discrete time control law, which is derived from the perspective of flux space vectors and load angle, predicts the desired stator flux vector for the next time-step with the torque and stator flux information only. The space-vector modulation (SVM) is then employed to generate the reference voltage vector, leading to a fixed switching frequency as well as lower flux and torque ripples when compared to the conventional DTC. Compared with other …

Femtosecond Laser Induced Tunable Surface Transformations On (111) Si Aided By Square Grids Diffraction, Weina Han, Lan Jiang, Xiaowei Li, Yang Liu, Yongfeng Lu Jan 2015

Femtosecond Laser Induced Tunable Surface Transformations On (111) Si Aided By Square Grids Diffraction, Weina Han, Lan Jiang, Xiaowei Li, Yang Liu, Yongfeng Lu

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications

We report an extra freedom to modulate the femtosecond laser energy distribution to control the surface ablated structures through a copper-grid mask. Due to the reduced deposited pulse energy by changing the scanning speed or the pulse fluence, a sequential evolution of three distinctly different surface patterns with periodic distributions is formed, namely, striped ripple lines, ripple microdots, and surface modification. By changing the scanning speed, the number of the multiple dots in a lattice can be modulated. Moreover, by exploring the ablation process through the copper grid mask, it shows an abnormal enhanced ablation effect with strong dependence of …

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications

Optical cavities with multiple tunable resonances have the potential to provide unique electromagnetic environments at two or more distinct wavelengthscritical for control of optical processes such as nonlinear generation, entangled photon generation, or photoluminescence (PL) enhancement. Here, we show a plasmonic nanocavity based on a nanopatch antenna design that has two tunable resonant modes in the visible spectrum separated by 350 nm and with line widths of ∼60 nm. The importance of utilizing two resonances simultaneously is demonstrated by integrating monolayer MoS2, a two-dimensional semiconductor, into the colloidally synthesized nanocavities. We observe a 2000-fold enhancement in the PL intensity of …

Skin Effect Mitigation In Laser Processed Multi-Walled Carbon Nanotube/Copper Conductors, K. Keramatnejad, Y. S. Zhou, Y. Gao, H. Rabiee Golgir, M. Wang, L. Jiang, J.F. Silvain, Yongfeng Lu Jan 2015

Skin Effect Mitigation In Laser Processed Multi-Walled Carbon Nanotube/Copper Conductors, K. Keramatnejad, Y. S. Zhou, Y. Gao, H. Rabiee Golgir, M. Wang, L. Jiang, J.F. Silvain, Yongfeng Lu

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications

In this study, laser-processed multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT)/Cu conductors are introduced as potential passive components to mitigate the skin effect of Cu at high frequencies (0–10 MHz). Suppressed skin effect is observed in the MWCNT/Cu conductors compared to primitive Cu. At an AC frequency of 10 MHz, a maximum AC resistance reduction of 94% was observed in a MWCNT/Cu conductor after being irradiated at a laser power density of 189 W/cm2. The reduced skin effect in the MWCNT/Cu conductors is ascribed to the presence of MWCNT channels which are insensitive to AC frequencies. The laser irradiation process is observed to …

Theoretical And Experimental Investigation Of An Intensity-Demodulated Fiber-Ring-Laser Ultrasonic Sensor System, G. Liu, Elliott Sandfort, Lingling Hu, Tongqing Liu, Ming Han Jan 2015

Theoretical And Experimental Investigation Of An Intensity-Demodulated Fiber-Ring-Laser Ultrasonic Sensor System, G. Liu, Elliott Sandfort, Lingling Hu, Tongqing Liu, Ming Han

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications

We theoretically and experimentally investigate the performance of an ultrasound detection system based on a fiber ring laser (FRL) whose cavity includes a pair of fiber Bragg gratings. The ultrasonic detection is achieved by the FRL power variations in response to the ultrasound-induced cold-cavity loss modulation of the FRL. The effects of key FRL parameters, including pump power, laser cold-cavity loss, and laser cavity length, on the system signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) performance have been investigated. It is found that the maximum SNR is achieved when the frequency of the ultrasound is the same as that of the FRL relaxation oscillation …

Fiber-Optic Refractometer Based On A Phase-Shifted Fiber Bragg Grating On A Side-Hole Fiber, Qi Zhang, Lingling Hu, Yuefeng Qi, G. Liu, Natale J. Ianno, Ming Han Jan 2015

Fiber-Optic Refractometer Based On A Phase-Shifted Fiber Bragg Grating On A Side-Hole Fiber, Qi Zhang, Lingling Hu, Yuefeng Qi, G. Liu, Natale J. Ianno, Ming Han

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications

A fiber-optic refractive index (RI) sensor based on a π-phaseshifted fiber-Bragg-grating (πFBG) inscribed on a side-hole fiber is presented. The reflection spectrum of the πFBG features two narrow notches associated with the two polarization modes and the spectral spacing of the notches is used for high-sensitivity RI sensing with little temperature cross-sensitivity. The side-hole fiber maintains its outer diameter and mechanical strength. The side-hole fiber is also naturally integrated into a microfluidic system for convenient sample delivery and reduced sample amount. A novel demodulation method based on laser frequency modulation to enhance the sensor dynamic range is proposed and demonstrated.

Minimax Portfolio Optimization Under Interval Uncertainty, Meng Yuan, Xu Lin, Junzo Watada, Vladik Kreinovich Jan 2015

Minimax Portfolio Optimization Under Interval Uncertainty, Meng Yuan, Xu Lin, Junzo Watada, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

In the 1950s, Markowitz proposed to combine different investment instruments to design a portfolio that either maximizes the expected return under constraints on volatility (risk) or minimizes the risk under given expected return. Markowitz's formulas are still widely used in financial practice. However, these formulas assume that we know the exact values of expected return and variance for each instrument, and that we know the exact covariance of every two instruments. In practice, we only know these values with some uncertainty. Often, we only know the bounds of these values -- i.e., in other words, we only know the intervals …

Constraint Approach To Multi-Objective Optimization, Martine Ceberio, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich Jan 2015

Constraint Approach To Multi-Objective Optimization, Martine Ceberio, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

In many practical situations, we would like to maximize (or minimize) several different criteria, and it is not clear how much weight to assign to each of these criteria. Such situations are ubiquitous and thus, it is important to be able to solve the corresponding multi-objective optimization problems. There exist many heuristic methods for solving such problems. In this paper, we reformulate multi-objective optimization as a constraint satisfaction problem, and we show that this reformulation explains two widely use multi-objective optimization techniques: optimizing a weighted sum of the objective functions and optimizing the product of normalized values of these functions.

On The Integration Of Interest And Power Awareness In Social-Aware Opportunistic Forwarding Algorithms, Soumaia Al Ayyat Jan 2015

On The Integration Of Interest And Power Awareness In Social-Aware Opportunistic Forwarding Algorithms, Soumaia Al Ayyat

Papers, Posters, and Presentations

Social-aware Opportunistic forwarding algorithms are much needed in environments which lack network infrastructure or in those that are susceptible to frequent disruptions. However, most of these algorithms are oblivious to both the user’s interest in the forwarded content and the limited power resources of the available mobile nodes. This paper proposes PI-SOFA, a framework for integrating the awareness of both interest and power capability of a candidate node within the forwarding decision process. Furthermore, the framework adapts its forwarding decisions to the expected contact duration between message carriers and candidate nodes. The proposed framework is applied to three state-of-the-art social-aware …

Application Of Random Indexing To Multi Label Classification Problems: A Case Study With Mesh Term Assignment And Diagnosis Code Extraction, Yuan Lu Jan 2015

Application Of Random Indexing To Multi Label Classification Problems: A Case Study With Mesh Term Assignment And Diagnosis Code Extraction, Yuan Lu

Theses and Dissertations--Computer Science

Many manual biomedical annotation tasks can be categorized as instances of the typical multi-label classification problem where several categories or labels from a fixed set need to assigned to an input instance. MeSH term assignment to biomedical articles and diagnosis code extraction from medical records are two such tasks. To address this problem automatically, in this thesis, we present a way to utilize latent associations between labels based on output label sets. We used random indexing as a method to determine latent associations and use the associations as a novel feature in a learning-to-rank algorithm that reranks candidate labels selected …

This paper presents BigDAWG, a reference implementation of a new architecture for “Big Data” applications. Such applications not only call for large-scale analytics, but also for real-time streaming support, smaller analytics at interactive speeds, data visualization, and cross-storage-system queries. Guided by the principle that “one size does not fit all”, we build on top of a variety of storage engines, each designed for a specialized use case. To illustrate the promise of this approach, we demonstrate its effectiveness on a hospital application using data from an intensive care unit (ICU). This complex application serves the needs of doctors and researchers …

Needed Computations Shortcutting Needed Steps, Sergio Antoy, Jacob Johannsen, Steven Libby Jan 2015

Needed Computations Shortcutting Needed Steps, Sergio Antoy, Jacob Johannsen, Steven Libby

Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

We define a compilation scheme for a constructor-based, strongly-sequential, graph rewriting system which shortcuts some needed steps. The object code is another constructor-based graph rewriting system. This system is normalizing for the original system when using an innermost strategy. Consequently, the object code can be easily implemented by eager functions in a variety of programming languages. We modify this object code in a way that avoids total or partial construction of the contracta of some needed steps of a computation. When computing normal forms in this way, both memory consumption and execution time are reduced compared to ordinary rewriting computations …

S-Store: Streaming Meets Transaction Processing, John Meehan, Nesime Tatbul, Cansu Aslantas, Ugur Cetintemel, Jiang Du, Tim Kraska, Samuel Madden, David Maier, Andrew Pavlo, Michael Stonebraker, Kristin A. Tufte, Hao Wang Jan 2015

S-Store: Streaming Meets Transaction Processing, John Meehan, Nesime Tatbul, Cansu Aslantas, Ugur Cetintemel, Jiang Du, Tim Kraska, Samuel Madden, David Maier, Andrew Pavlo, Michael Stonebraker, Kristin A. Tufte, Hao Wang

Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

Stream processing addresses the needs of real-time applications. Transaction processing addresses the coordination and safety of short atomic computations. Heretofore, these two modes of operation existed in separate, stove-piped systems. In this work, we attempt to fuse the two computational paradigms in a single system called S-Store. In this way, S-Store can simultaneously accommodate OLTP and streaming applications. We present a simple transaction model for streams that integrates seamlessly with a traditional OLTP system. We chose to build S-Store as an extension of H-Store, an open-source, in-memory, distributed OLTP database system. By implementing S-Store in this way, we can make …

Desiderata For A Big Data Language, David Maier Jan 2015

Desiderata For A Big Data Language, David Maier

Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

Data management and analytics systems for big data have proliferated, including column stores, array databases, graphanalysis environments and linear-algebra packages. This burgeoning of systems has lead to a surfeit of language and APIs. It is time to consider a new framework that can span these systems and simplify the programming and maintenance of Big Data applications. There are two key goals for such a framework:

Portability: It should be relatively easy to move an application or tool developed on one platform to operate against another. As a corollary, back-end data and analytics services should be swappable in a particular …

Usage Based Topology For Dcns, Qing Yi, Suresh Singh

Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

Many data center network topologies are designed to provide full bisection bandwidth for tens of thousands of servers in order to achieve high network throughput and server agility. However, the utilization rate of DCNs on average is below 10%, which results in a significant waste of network resources and energy. Many researchers propose consolidating network traffic flows to maximize the set of idle network equipment and switching them to low power mode to save energy. In this paper, we propose using skinnier network topologies to meet performance requirements of realistic loads thus saving not only energy but capital cost as …

Query From Examples: An Iterative, Data-Driven Approach To Query Construction, Hao Li, Chee-Yong Chan, David Maier Jan 2015

Query From Examples: An Iterative, Data-Driven Approach To Query Construction, Hao Li, Chee-Yong Chan, David Maier

Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

In this paper, we propose a new approach, called Query from Examples (QFE), to help non-expert database users construct SQL queries. Our approach, which is designed for users who might be unfamiliar with SQL, only requires that the user is able to determine whether a given output table is the result of his or her intended query on a given input database. To kick-start the construction of a target query Q, the user first provides a pair of inputs: a sample database D and an output table R which is the result of Q on D. As there will be …

Does Choice Of Programming Language Affect Student Understanding Of Programming Concepts In A First Year Engineering Course?, Benjamin D. Mcpheron, Stephanie M. Gratiano, William J. Palm

Engineering, Computing & Construction Management Faculty Publications

Most undergraduate engineering curricula include computer programming to some degree, introducing a structured language such as C, or a computational system such as MATLAB, or both. Many of these curricula include programming in first year engineering courses, integrating the solution of simple engineering problems with an introduction to programming concepts. In line with this practice, Roger Williams University has included an introduction to programming as a part of the first year engineering curriculum for many years. However, recent industry and pedagogical trends have motivated the switch from a structured language (VBA) to a computational system (MATLAB). As a part of the …

A Network Path Advising Service, Xiongqi Wu Jan 2015

A Network Path Advising Service, Xiongqi Wu

Theses and Dissertations--Computer Science

A common feature of emerging future Internet architectures is the ability for applications to select the path, or paths, their packets take between a source and destination. Unlike the current Internet architecture where routing protocols find a single (best) path between a source and destination, future Internet routing protocols will present applications with a set of paths and allow them to select the most appropriate path. Although this enables applications to be actively involved in the selection of the paths their packets travel, the huge number of potential paths and the need to know the current network conditions of each …

Optimization Of Electrical Power Transmission Lines'' Routing Using Ahp, Fuzzy Ahp, And Gis, Hasan Eroğlu, Musa Aydin Jan 2015

Optimization Of Electrical Power Transmission Lines'' Routing Using Ahp, Fuzzy Ahp, And Gis, Hasan Eroğlu, Musa Aydin

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

With the increase of people's need for energy, electrical energy transmission has become a very important issue as well as electrical power generation. One of the most important problems in energy transmission is finding the best route in a very complex study area. To date, many people from different disciplines have come together to find the best routes by manual methods like using paper maps and deciding which route is the least-cost path (LCP) to the destination point. Today it is known that, in engineering problems, and especially in path-finding or site-placing problems, the Geographic Information System (GIS) is the …

Group Control And Identification Of Residential Appliances Using A Nonintrusive Method, Sunil Semwal, Munendra Singh, Rai Sachindra Prasad Jan 2015

Group Control And Identification Of Residential Appliances Using A Nonintrusive Method, Sunil Semwal, Munendra Singh, Rai Sachindra Prasad

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Identifying and controlling (ON/OFF) electrical appliance(s) from a remote location is an essential part of energy management. This motivated us to design a system that can collect the aggregate load signature from a single point, obtain the features, and finally identify the ON state of electrical appliance(s). The proposed disaggregation technique can be divided into two modules: the first part proposes an electrical installation system to disaggregate the appliance at the circuit level, whereas the second part consists of feature selection, dimension reduction, and classification algorithms. Load signatures of electrical appliances were combined with white Gaussian noise to analyze how …
