Cumulonimbus Computing Concerns: Information Security In Public, Private, And Hybrid Cloud Computing, Daniel Adams Apr 2015

Cumulonimbus Computing Concerns: Information Security In Public, Private, And Hybrid Cloud Computing, Daniel Adams

Senior Honors Theses

Companies of all sizes operating in all markets are moving toward cloud computing for greater flexibility, efficiency, and cost savings. The decision of how to adopt the cloud is a question of major security concern due to the fact that control is relinquished over certain portions of the IT ecosystem. This thesis presents the position that the main security decision in moving to cloud computing is choosing which type of cloud to employ for each portion of the network – the hybrid cloud approach. Vulnerabilities that exist on a public cloud will be explored, and recommendations on decision factors will …

The new attack vector creates efficiencies throughout the lifecycle of an attack and greatly reduces …

How To Estimate Expected Shortfall When Probabilities Are Known With Interval Or Fuzzy Uncertainty, Christian Servin, Hung T. Nguyen, Vladik Kreinovich Apr 2015

How To Estimate Expected Shortfall When Probabilities Are Known With Interval Or Fuzzy Uncertainty, Christian Servin, Hung T. Nguyen, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

To gauge the risk corresponding to a possible disaster, it is important to know both the probability of this disaster and the expected damage caused by such potential disaster ("expected shortfall"). Both these measures of risk are easy to estimate in the ideal case, when we know the exact probabilities of different disaster strengths. In practice, however, we usually only have a partial information about these probabilities: we may have an interval (or, more generally, fuzzy) uncertainty about these probabilities. In this paper, we show how to efficiently estimate the expected shortfall under such interval and/or fuzzy uncertainty.

Which Bio-Diversity Indices Are Most Adequate, Olga Kosheleva, Craig Tweedie, Vladik Kreinovich Apr 2015

Which Bio-Diversity Indices Are Most Adequate, Olga Kosheleva, Craig Tweedie, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

One of the main objectives of ecology is to analyze, maintain, and enhance the bio-diversity of different ecosystems. To be able to do that, we need to gauge bio-diversity. Several semi-heuristic diversity indices have been shown to be in good accordance with the intuitive notion of bio-diversity. In this paper, we provide a theoretical justification for these empirically successful techniques. Specifically, we show that the most widely used techniques -- Simpson index -- can be justified by using simple fuzzy rules, while a more elaborate justification explains all empirically successful diversity indices.

Symbolic Aggregate Approximation (Sax) Under Interval Uncertainty, Chrysostomos D. Stylios, Vladik Kreinovich Apr 2015

Symbolic Aggregate Approximation (Sax) Under Interval Uncertainty, Chrysostomos D. Stylios, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

In many practical situations, we monitor a system by continuously measuring the corresponding quantities, to make sure that an abnormal deviation is detected as early as possible. Often, we do not have ready algorithms to detect abnormality, so we need to use machine learning techniques. For these techniques to be efficient, we first need to compress the data. One of the most successful methods of data compression is the technique of Symbolic Aggregate approXimation (SAX). While this technique is motivated by measurement uncertainty, it does not explicitly take this uncertainty into account. In this paper, we show that we can …

Captured Open Book Image De-Warping And Shading Correction Using 3d Depth Information, Chyuan-Tyng Wu Apr 2015

Captured Open Book Image De-Warping And Shading Correction Using 3d Depth Information, Chyuan-Tyng Wu

Open Access Dissertations

Various three dimensional (3D) measuring or capturing devices are introduced to the society recently, and there are abundant possibilities that we can take advantage of this new technology. In this research, we worked on one useful application: to correct the distortion due to the curved shape of the pages of an open book in captured images using of depth information. This work is relevant to camera-based capture devices that can use a projector to cast structured light patterns to provide depth information. In order to improve the visual quality of captured documents, we established our algorithm from two perspectives. First, …

Architectural Techniques To Extend Multi-Core Performance Scaling, Hamza Bin Sohail Apr 2015

Architectural Techniques To Extend Multi-Core Performance Scaling, Hamza Bin Sohail

Open Access Dissertations

Multi-cores have successfully delivered performance improvements over the past decade; however, they now face problems on two fronts: power and off-chip memory bandwidth. Dennard's scaling is effectively coming to an end which has lead to a gradual increase in chip power dissipation. In addition, sustaining off-chip memory bandwidth has become harder due to the limited space for pins on the die and greater current needed to drive the increasing load . My thesis focuses on techniques to address the power and off-chip memory bandwidth challenges in order to avoid the premature end of the multi-core era. ^ In the first …

A Systematic Review Of The Critical Factors For Success Of Mobile Learning In Higher Education (University Students' Perspective), Muasaad Alrasheedi, Luiz Fernando Capretz, Arif Raza

Electrical and Computer Engineering Publications

The phenomenon of the use of a mobile learning (m-Learning) platform in educational institutions is slowly gaining momentum. However, the enthusiasm with which mobile phones have been welcomed into every aspect of our lives is not yet apparent in the educational sector. To understand the reason, it is important to understand user expectations of the system. This article documents a systematic review of existing studies to find the success factors for effective m-Learning. Our systematic review collates results from 30 studies conducted in 17 countries, where 13 critical success factors were found to strongly impact m-Learning implementation. Using these results …

Model Reduction: Why It Is Possible And How It Can Potentially Help To Control Swarms Of Unmanned Arial Vehicles (Uavs), Martine Ceberio, Leobardo Valera, Olga Kosheleva, Rodrigo A. Romero

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

In many application areas, such as meteorology, traffic control, etc., it is desirable to employ swarms of Unmanned Arial Vehicles (UAVs) to provide us with a good picture of the changing situation and thus, to help us make better predictions (and make better decisions based on these predictions). To avoid duplication, interference, and collisions, UAVs must coordinate their trajectories. As a result, the optimal control of each of these UAVs should depend on the positions and velocities of all others -- which makes the corresponding control problem very complicated. Since, in contrast to controlling a single UAV, the resulting problem …

Optimizing Cloud Use Under Interval Uncertainty, Vladik Kreinovich, Esthela Gallardo Apr 2015

Optimizing Cloud Use Under Interval Uncertainty, Vladik Kreinovich, Esthela Gallardo

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

One of the main advantages of cloud computing is that it helps the users to save money: instead of buying a lot of computers to cover all their computations, the user can rent the computation time on the cloud to cover the rare peak spikes of computer need. From this viewpoint, it is important to find the optimal division between in-house and in-the-cloud computations. In this paper, we solve this optimization problem, both in the idealized case when we know the complete information about the costs and the user's need, and in a more realistic situation, when we only know …

A Common Knowledge Engineering Framework For Data Assimilation, Correlation, And Extrapolation (Dace), Edward P. Weaver Apr 2015

A Common Knowledge Engineering Framework For Data Assimilation, Correlation, And Extrapolation (Dace), Edward P. Weaver

EMSE Doctoral Projects

The Common Knowledge Engineering Framework for Data Assimilation, Correlation, and Extrapolation (DACE) project is focused on providing a software centric general framework for advanced processing and analysis of data. This translates to researchers, scientists, engineers, and system architects not having to program a new application but rather to define the system configuration, process, and processing that is needed to perform a specific functionality. This makes the limitation of the application the end users ability to fully define the functional requirements and setup the framework accordingly.

This doctoral project will provide the details to the system definition, standards, metrics, schedule, and …

Using Support Vector Machine Ensembles For Target Audience Classification On Twitter, Siaw Ling Lo, Raymond Chiong, David Cornforth Apr 2015

Using Support Vector Machine Ensembles For Target Audience Classification On Twitter, Siaw Ling Lo, Raymond Chiong, David Cornforth

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The vast amount and diversity of the content shared on social media can pose a challenge for any business wanting to use it to identify potential customers. In this paper, our aim is to investigate the use of both unsupervised and supervised learning methods for target audience classification on Twitter with minimal annotation efforts. Topic domains were automatically discovered from contents shared by followers of an account owner using Twitter Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA). A Support Vector Machine (SVM) ensemble was then trained using contents from different account owners of the various topic domains identified by Twitter LDA. Experimental results …

Exploring Discriminative Features For Anomaly Detection In Public Spaces, Shriguru Nayak, Archan Misra, Kasthuri Jeyarajah, Philips Kokoh Prasetyo, Ee-Peng Lim

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Context data, collected either from mobile devices or from user-generated social media content, can help identify abnormal behavioural patterns in public spaces (e.g., shopping malls, college campuses or downtown city areas). Spatiotemporal analysis of such data streams provides a compelling new approach towards automatically creating real-time urban situational awareness, especially about events that are unanticipated or that evolve very rapidly. In this work, we use real-life datasets collected via SMU's LiveLabs testbed or via SMU's Palanteer software, to explore various discriminative features (both spatial and temporal - e.g., occupancy volumes, rate of change in topic{specific tweets or probabilistic distribution of …

Disc Golf Locator, Christian Wallenfelsz, Shane Gamble, Noah Sanor, Brandon Linhart Apr 2015

Disc Golf Locator, Christian Wallenfelsz, Shane Gamble, Noah Sanor, Brandon Linhart

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research

Disc golf is a game similar to traditional golf where players throw small plastic discs into chain-link nets. Disc golf courses cover several acres containing lakes, small wooded areas, large bushes, and grassy fields. It is not uncommon to accidentally throw a golf disc into the woods or bushes, so it is the goal of this project to create a device to locate the disc and make suggestions for the player to improve performance. A small device will be attached the disc which will track its location and flight characteristics. The device will contain a GPS receiver, an inertial measurement …

Remote Mobile Screen (Rms): An Approach For Secure Byod Environments, Santiago Manuel Gimenez Ocano Apr 2015

Remote Mobile Screen (Rms): An Approach For Secure Byod Environments, Santiago Manuel Gimenez Ocano

School of Computing: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) is a policy where employees use their own personal mobile devices to perform work-related tasks. Enterprises reduce their costs since they do not have to purchase and provide support for the mobile devices. BYOD increases job satisfaction and productivity in the employees, as they can choose which device to use and do not need to carry two or more devices.

However, BYOD policies create an insecure environment, as the corporate network is extended and it becomes harder to protect it from attacks. In this scenario, the corporate information can be leaked, personal and corporate spaces …

Visual Analytics For Large Communication Trace Data, Jieting Wu Apr 2015

Visual Analytics For Large Communication Trace Data, Jieting Wu

School of Computing: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Executions of modern parallel programs often yield complex communications among compute nodes of large-scale clusters of workstations or supercomputers. Analyzing communication patterns is becoming increasingly critical to performance optimiza- tion. As the scale and complexity of parallel applications drastically increases, visu- alization has become a feasible means to conduct analysis of massive communication patterns. However, most visualization tools fall short in showing comprehensive dy- namic communication graph and addressing the scalability issue. Our solution for analyzing dynamic communication patterns is based on an analytics framework cou- pled with a new visualization technique, named CommGram [29], that provides a flexible solution …

Group Decisions In Value Management, Christiono Utomo, Farida Murti, Arazi Idrus Apr 2015

Group Decisions In Value Management, Christiono Utomo, Farida Murti, Arazi Idrus

Makara Journal of Technology

This research deals with a technique to expedite group decision making during the selection of technical solutions for value management process. Selection of a solution from a set of alternatives is facilitated by evaluating using multicriteria decision making techniques. During the process, every possible solution is rated on criteria of function and cost. Function deals more with quality than with quantity, and cost can be calculated based on the theoretical time value of money. Decision-making techniques based on satisfying games are applied to determine the relative function and cost of solutions and hence their relative value. The functions were determined …

Diagnosis Of Systematic Defects Based On Design-For-Manufacturability Guidelines, Dhawal Krishana Gupta Apr 2015

Diagnosis Of Systematic Defects Based On Design-For-Manufacturability Guidelines, Dhawal Krishana Gupta

Open Access Theses

All products in the Very-Large-Scale-Integrated-Circuit (VLSIC) industry go through three major stages of production - Design, Verification and Manufacturing. Unfortunately, neither of these stages are truly perfect, hence we need two more sub-stages of manufacturing, namely Testing and Defect Diagnosis to prevent imperfections in ICs. Testing is used to generate test vectors to validate the functionality of the Device-under-Test (DUT), and Defect Diagnosis is the process of identifying the root-cause of a failing chip, i.e., the location and nature of defect. Systematic defects are unintended structural and material changes at specific locations with a higher probability of failure due to …

Trajectory Generation For Lane-Change Maneuver Of Autonomous Vehicles, Ashesh Goswami Apr 2015

Trajectory Generation For Lane-Change Maneuver Of Autonomous Vehicles, Ashesh Goswami

Open Access Theses

Lane-change maneuver is one of the most thoroughly investigated automatic driving operations that can be used by an autonomous self-driving vehicle as a primitive for performing more complex operations like merging, entering/exiting highways or overtaking another vehicle. This thesis focuses on two coherent problems that are associated with the trajectory generation for lane-change maneuvers of autonomous vehicles in a highway scenario: (i) an effective velocity estimation of neighboring vehicles under different road scenarios involving linear and curvilinear motion of the vehicles, and (ii) trajectory generation based on the estimated velocities of neighboring vehicles for safe operation of self-driving cars during …

Characterization Of Vectorization Strategies For Recursive Algorithms, Shruthi Balakrishna Apr 2015

Characterization Of Vectorization Strategies For Recursive Algorithms, Shruthi Balakrishna

Open Access Theses

A successful architectural trend in parallelism is the emphasis on data parallelism with SIMD hardware. Since SIMD extensions on commodity processors tend to require relatively little extra hardware, executing a SIMD instruction is essentially free from a power perspective, making vector computation an attractive target for parallelism. SIMD instructions are designed to accelerate the performance of applications such as motion video, real-time physics and graphics. Such applications perform repetitive operations on large arrays of numbers. While the key idea is to parallelize significant portions of data that get operated by several sequential instructions into a single instruction, not every application …

Exploiting Intra-Warp Address Monotonicity For Fast Memory Coalescing In Gpus, Hector Rodriguez-Simmonds Apr 2015

Exploiting Intra-Warp Address Monotonicity For Fast Memory Coalescing In Gpus, Hector Rodriguez-Simmonds

Open Access Theses

Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) are growing increasingly popular as general purpose compute accelerators. GPUs are best suited for applications which have abundant data parallelism wherein the computation expressed as a single thread can be applied over a large set of data items. One key constraint that affects application performance on GPUs is that the underlying hardware is single-instruction, multiple data (SIMD) hardware which requires parallel instructions from the multiple threads to execute in a lock-step manner. The benefits of lock-step execution can be seriously degraded if the threads diverge (because of memory or branches). Specifically in the case of memory, …
