Dna Based Electrolyte/Separator For Lithium Battery Application, Jitendra Kumar, Fahima Ouchen-Bouchendouka, Devin A. Smarra, Guru Subramanyam, James Grote

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

In this study, we demonstrated the use of DNA-CTMA (DC) in combination with PolyVinylidene Fluoride (PVDF) as a host matrix or separator for Lithium based electrolyte to form solid polymer/gel like electrolyte for potential application in Li-ion batteries.

The addition of DC provided a better thermal stability of the composite electrolyte as shown by the thermos-gravimetric analysis (TGA). The AC conductivity measurements suggest that the addition of DC to the gel electrolyte had no effect on the overall ionic conductivity of the composite. The obtained films are flexible with high mechanical stretch-ability as compared to the gel type electrolytes only.

Neural Modeling Of Sequential Inferences And Learning Over Episodic Memory, Budhitama Subagdja, Ah-Hwee Tan

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Episodic memory is a significant part of cognition for reasoning and decision making. Retrieval in episodic memory depends on the order relationships of memory items which provides flexibility in reasoning and inferences regarding sequential relations for spatio-temporal domain. However, it is still unclear how they are encoded and how they differ from representations in other types of memory like semantic or procedural memory. This paper presents a neural model of sequential representation and inferences on episodic memory. It contrasts with the common views on sequential representation in neural networks that instead of maintaining transitions between events to represent sequences, they …

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

Network virtualization is a key provision for improving the scalability and reliability of cloud computing services. In recent years, various mapping schemes have been developed to reserve VN resources over substrate networks. However, many cloud providers are very concerned about improving service reliability under catastrophic disaster conditions yielding multiple system failures. To address this challenge, this work presents a novel failure region-disjoint VN mapping scheme to improve VN mapping survivability. The problem is first formulated as a mixed integer linear programming problem and then two heuristic solutions are proposed to compute a pair of failure region-disjoint VN mappings. The solution …

Enabling Distributed Scientific Computing On The Campus, Derek J. Weitzel Jul 2015

Enabling Distributed Scientific Computing On The Campus, Derek J. Weitzel

School of Computing: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Campus research computing has evolved from many small decentralized resources, such as individual desktops, to fewer, larger centralized resources, such as clusters. This change has been necessitated by the increasing size of researcher's workloads, but this change has harmed the researcher's user experience. We propose to improve the user experience on the computational resources by creating an overlay cluster they are able to control. This overlay should transparently scale to national cyberinfrastructure as the user's demands increase.

We explore methods for improving the user experience when submitting jobs on a campus grid. To this end, we created a remote submission …

Improved Terahertz Modulation Using Germanium Telluride (Gete) Chalcogenide Thin Films, A. H. Gwin, C. H. Kodama, T. Laurvick, Ronald A. Coutu Jr., P. F. Taday

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

We demonstrate improved terahertz (THz) modulation using thermally crystallized germanium telluride (GeTe) thin films. GeTe is a chalcogenidematerial that exhibits a nonvolatile, amorphous to crystalline phase change at approximately 200 °C, as well as six orders of magnitude decreased electrical resistivity. In this study, amorphous GeTe thin filmswere sputtered on sapphire substrates and then tested using THz time-domain spectroscopy (THz-TDS). The test samples, heated in-situ while collecting THz-TDS measurements, exhibited a gradual absorbance increase, an abrupt nonvolatile reduction at the transition temperature, followed by another gradual increase in absorbance. The transition temperature was verified by conducting similar thermal tests while …

Compiling Collapsing Rules In Certain Constructor Systems, Sergio Antoy, Andy Jost Jul 2015

Compiling Collapsing Rules In Certain Constructor Systems, Sergio Antoy, Andy Jost

Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

The implementation of functional logic languages by means of graph rewriting requires a special handling of collapsing rules. Recent advances about the notion of a needed step in some constructor systems offer a new approach to this problem. We present two results: a transformation of a certain class of constructor-based rewrite systems that eliminates collapsing rules, and a rewrite-like relation that takes advantage of the absence of collapsing rules. We formally state and prove the correctness of these results. When used together, these results simplify without any loss of efficiency an implementation of graph rewriting and consequently of functional logic …

Automatic Fault Injection For Driver Robustness Testing, Kai Cong, Li Lei, Zhenkun Yang, Fei Xie Jul 2015

Automatic Fault Injection For Driver Robustness Testing, Kai Cong, Li Lei, Zhenkun Yang, Fei Xie

Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

Robustness testing is a crucial stage in the device driver development cycle. To accelerate driver robustness testing, effective fault scenarios need to be generated and injected without requiring much time and human effort. In this pa- per, we present a practical approach to automatic runtime generation and injection of fault scenarios for driver robust- ness testing. We identify target functions that can fail from runtime execution traces, generate effective fault scenarios on these target functions using a bounded trace-based it- erative strategy, and inject the generated fault scenarios at runtime to test driver robustness using a permutation-based injection mechanism. We …

Management And Analysis Of Multi Class Traffic In Single And Multi-Band Systems, Husnu S. Narman, Shohrab Hossain, Mohammed Atiquzzaman

Computer Sciences and Electrical Engineering Faculty Research

A recent trend in Internet usage has seen large amounts of multimedia data due to increasingly large numbers of mobile users. To facilitate higher bandwidth, modern mobile routers are capable of supporting simultaneous multi-band, leading to less interference, higher capacity and better reliability. However, there exists neither previous work that attempts to maximize utilization of available bandwidth in order to increase performance of multi-band mobile routers through the sharing of traffic classes among different frequency bands of the multi-band mobile router by scheduling, nor that shows multi-band routers are better than single band routers in realistic scenarios. In this paper, …

Improving Engagement Assessment By Model Individualization And Deep Learning, Feng Li Jul 2015

Improving Engagement Assessment By Model Individualization And Deep Learning, Feng Li

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

This dissertation studies methods that improve engagement assessment for pilots. The major work addresses two challenging problems involved in the assessment: individual variation among pilots and the lack of labeled data for training assessment models.

Task engagement is usually assessed by analyzing physiological measurements collected from subjects who are performing a task. However, physiological measurements such as Electroencephalography (EEG) vary from subject to subject. An assessment model trained for one subject may not be applicable to other subjects. We proposed a dynamic classifier selection algorithm for model individualization and compared it to other two methods: base line normalization and similarity-based …

Millions of people worldwide suffer from various neuromuscular disorders such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), brainstem stroke, muscular dystrophy, cerebral palsy, and others, which adversely affect the neural control of muscles or the muscles themselves. The patients who are the most severely affected lose all voluntary muscle control and are completely locked-in," i.e., they are unable to communicate with the outside world in any manner. In the direction of developing neuro-rehabilitation techniques for these patients, several studies have used brain signals related to mental imagery and attention in order to control an external device, a technology known as a brain-computer …

Detecting, Modeling, And Predicting User Temporal Intention, Hany M. Salaheldeen Jul 2015

Detecting, Modeling, And Predicting User Temporal Intention, Hany M. Salaheldeen

Computer Science Theses & Dissertations

The content of social media has grown exponentially in the recent years and its role has evolved from narrating life events to actually shaping them. Unfortunately, content posted and shared in social networks is vulnerable and prone to loss or change, rendering the context associated with it (a tweet, post, status, or others) meaningless. There is an inherent value in maintaining the consistency of such social records as in some cases they take over the task of being the first draft of history as collections of these social posts narrate the pulse of the street during historic events, protest, riots, …

Object Tracking From Multiple Multi-Axis Platforms In Four Dimensions, Theodore A. Teates Jul 2015

Object Tracking From Multiple Multi-Axis Platforms In Four Dimensions, Theodore A. Teates

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Object handoff in free space requires a sound framework between at least two optical sensors and one object. Previous work developed an algorithm that can determine the ap propriate time to initiate handoff of object tracking responsibilities from one optical sensor with an object in view to another optical sensor with the same object in view. In order to maintain persistent tracking of objects in this work, gimbal movements of optical sensors are determined by calculations using the Lagrange method to determine the trackability measures between the moving object and the handoff cone for the appropriate optical sensor. The rotation …

Adaptive Controller Using Runtime Partial Hardware Reconfiguration For Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (Uavs), Nikhil Thomas

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The goal of this thesis is to explore the feasibility of a multirotor controller system which can dynamically change the arm configuration of a multirotor. Currently most of the multirotor systems have to be powered down, rewired, and programmed with new firmware, to configure how many arms/motors they use to fly. The focus of our effort is to develop a Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) based hardware/software controller which uses dynamic partial hardware reconfiguration to switch the arm/motor configuration of a multirotor during operation. We believe that this will make a multirotor more fault tolerant and adaptive. This thesis explains …

Converting Medical Service Provider Data Into A Unified Format For Processing, Brandon Krugman Jul 2015

Converting Medical Service Provider Data Into A Unified Format For Processing, Brandon Krugman

Master's Theses (2009 -)

Most organizations process flat files regularly. There are different options for processing files, including SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS), BizTalk, SQL import job, and other Extract, Transform, and Load (ETL) processes. All of these options have very strict requirements for file formats. If the format of the file changes, all of these options throw a catastrophic error, and implementing a fix to handle the new format is difficult. With each of the methods, the new format needs to be configured in the development environment, and the data flow must be modified to process all of the changes. Due to the …

Integrity Coded Databases (Icdb) - An Evaluation Of Efficiency, Performance, And Practicality, Jake Rodden, Jyh-Haw Yeh (Mentor), Elmer Duran, Dan Kondratyuk

Idaho Conference on Undergraduate Research

Recently, cloud database storage has become an inexpensive and convenient option to store information; however, this relatively new area of service can be vulnerable to security breaches. Storing data in a foreign location requires the owner to relinquish control of their information. This opens the possibility for internal, malicious attacks that can involve the manipulation, omission, or addition of data. Our research tests a potential solution for retaining data as it was intended to be stored (known as integrity) in these cloud-stored databases: by converting the original databases to Integrity-Coded Databases (ICDB). ICDBs utilize Integrity Codes: cryptographic codes created for …

Reducing Multiple Access Interference In Broadband Multi-User Wireless Networks, Ali Nayef Alqatawneh Jul 2015

Reducing Multiple Access Interference In Broadband Multi-User Wireless Networks, Ali Nayef Alqatawneh

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation is devoted to developing multiple access interference (MAI) reduction techniques for multi-carrier multi-user wireless communication networks.

In multi-carrier code division multiple access (MC-CDMA) systems, a full multipath diversity can be achieved by transmitting one symbol over multiple orthogonal subcarriers by means of spreading codes. However, in frequency selective fading channels, orthogonality among users can be destroyed leading to MAI. MAI represents the main obstacle to support large number of users in multi-user wireless systems. Consequently, MAI reduction becomes a main challenge when designing multi-carrier multi-user wireless networks. In this dissertation, first, we study MC-CDMA systems with different existing …

Vocal Classification Of Vocalizations Of A Pair Of Asian Small-Clawed Otters To Determine Stress, Peter M. Scheifele, Michael T. Johnson, Michelle Fry, Benjamin Hamel, Kathryn Laclede

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

Asian Small-Clawed Otters (Aonyx cinerea) are a small, protected but threatened species living in freshwater. They are gregarious and live in monogamous pairs for their lifetimes, communicating via scent and acoustic vocalizations. This study utilized a hidden Markov model (HMM) to classify stress versus non-stress calls from a sibling pair under professional care. Vocalizations were expertly annotated by keepers into seven contextual categories. Four of these—aggression, separation anxiety, pain, and prefeeding—were identified as stressful contexts, and three of them—feeding, training, and play—were identified as non-stressful contexts. The vocalizations were segmented, manually categorized into broad vocal type call types, and analyzed …

Methods of performing and defending against deceptive actions are a popular field of study in game theory; however, the focus is mostly on action deception in turn-based games. This work focuses on developing strategies for performing environmental deception in two-player, strategic-form games. Environmental deception is defined as deception where one player has the ability to change the other's perception of the state of the game through modification of their perception of the game's payoff matrix, similar to the use of camouflage. The main contributions of this research are an expansion of the definition of the stability of a Nash equilibrium …

Direct Structure Estimation For 3d Reconstruction, Nianjuan Jiang, Wen-Yan Lin, Minh N. Do, Jiangbo Lu Jun 2015

Direct Structure Estimation For 3d Reconstruction, Nianjuan Jiang, Wen-Yan Lin, Minh N. Do, Jiangbo Lu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Most conventional structure-from-motion (SFM) techniques require camera pose estimation before computing any scene structure. In this work we show that when combined with single/multiple homography estimation, the general Euclidean rigidity constraint provides a simple formulation for scene structure recovery without explicit camera pose computation. This direct structure estimation (DSE) opens a new way to design a SFM system that reverses the order of structure and motion estimation. We show that this alternative approach works well for recovering scene structure and camera poses from sideway motion given planar or general man-made scenes.
