An Exploration Of The Use Of Gamification In Agile Software Development, Alan Mcclean Sep 2015

An Exploration Of The Use Of Gamification In Agile Software Development, Alan Mcclean

Dissertations

Although Project Management has existed for many millennia, software project management is relatively new. As a discipline, software project management is considered difficult. The reasons for this include that software development is non-deterministic; opaque and delivered under ever-increasing time pressure in a volatile environment. Evolving from Incremental and Iterative Development (IID), Agile methodologies have attempted to address these issues by focusing on frequent delivery; working closely with the customer; being responsive to change and preferring working software to extensive documentation. This focus on delivery rather than documentation has sometimes been misrepresented as no documentation, which has led to a shortfall …

3d Scene Reconstruction With Micro-Aerial Vehicles And Mobile Devices, Ivan Dryanovski

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Scene reconstruction is the process of building an accurate geometric model of one's environment from sensor data. We explore the problem of real-time, large-scale 3D scene reconstruction in indoor environments using small laser range-finders and low-cost RGB-D (color plus depth) cameras. We focus on computationally-constrained platforms such as micro-aerial vehicles (MAVs) and mobile devices. These platforms present a set of fundamental challenges - estimating the state and trajectory of the device as it moves within its environment and utilizing lightweight, dynamic data structures to hold the representation of the reconstructed scene. The system needs to be computationally and memory-efficient, so …

Coupled Auto-Associative Neural Networks For Heterogeneous Face Recognition, Benjamin S. Riggan, Christopher Reale, Nasser M. Nasrabadi Sep 2015

Coupled Auto-Associative Neural Networks For Heterogeneous Face Recognition, Benjamin S. Riggan, Christopher Reale, Nasser M. Nasrabadi

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications

Several models have been previously suggested for learning correlated representations between source and target modalities. In this paper, we propose a novel coupled autoassociative neural network for learning a target-to-source image representation for heterogenous face recognition. This coupled network is unique, because a cross-modal transformation is learned by forcing the hidden units (latent features) of two neural networks to be as similar as possible, while simultaneously preserving information from the input. The effectiveness of this model is demonstrated using multiple existing heterogeneous face recognition databases. Moreover, the empirical results show that the learned image representation—common latent features—by the coupled auto-associative …

Conflict-Aware Real-Time Routing For Industrial Wireless Sensor-Actuator Networks, Chengjie Wu, Dolvara Gunatilaka, Mo Sha, Chenyang Lu

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

Process industries are adopting wireless sensor-actuator networks (WSANs) as the communication infrastructure. WirelessHART is an open industrial standard for WSANs that have seen world-wide deployments. Real-time scheduling and delay analysis have been studied for WSAN extensively. End-to-end delay in WSANs highly depends on routing, which is still open problem. This paper presents the first real-time routing design for WSAN. We first discuss end-to-end delays of WSANs, then present our real-time routing design. We have implemented and experimented our routing designs on a wireless testbed of 69 nodes. Both experimental results and simulations show that our routing design can improve the …

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

Process industries are adopting wireless sensor-actuator networks (WSANs) as the communication infrastructure. The dynamics of industrial environments and stringent reliability requirements necessitate high degrees of fault tolerance in routing. WirelessHART is an open industrial standard for WSANs that have seen world-wide deployments. WirelessHART employs graph routing schemes to achieve network reliability through multiple paths. Since many industrial devices operate on batteries in harsh environments where changing batteries are prohibitively labor-intensive, WSANs need to achieve long network lifetime. To meet industrial demand for long-term reliable communication, this paper studies the problem of maximizing network lifetime for WSANs under graph routing. We …

Dynamic Deployment For Hybrid Sensor Networks Based On Potential Field-Directed Particle Swarm Optimization, Ying Zhang, Yunlong Qiao, Wei Zhao, Wei Chen, Jinde Cao

Computer Science Faculty Research

For a hybrid sensor network, the effective coverage rate can be optimized by adjusting the location of the mobile nodes. For many deployments by APF (artificial potential field), due to the common problem of barrier effect, it is difficult for mobile nodes to diffuse by the weaker attraction when the nodes initially distribute densely in some places. The proposed deployment algorithm PFPSO (Potential Field-Directed Particle Swarm Optimization) can overcome this problem and guide the mobile nodes to the optimal positions. Normally the requirement is different for the effective coverage rate between the hotspot area and the ordinary area. On the …

Secure Wearable Systems With Wireless Phy-Layer Information, Lu Shi Sep 2015

Secure Wearable Systems With Wireless Phy-Layer Information, Lu Shi

Theses and Dissertations

In wireless wearable system such as body area network (BAN), device authentication and secret key extraction are essential for trustworthy and reliable gathering and delivery of user’s critical health information. Traditional authentication solutions depend on prior trust among nodes whose establishment would require either key pre-distribution or non-intuitive participation by inexperienced users. Most existing non-cryptographic authentication schemes require advanced hardware or significant modifications to the system software, which are impractical for BANs. Recently, most wireless network security schemes merely based on physical layer characteristics tackle device authentication and secret key extraction, but separately. It remains an open problem to simultaneously …

Enhancing Wifi-Based Localization With Visual Clues, Han Xu, Zheng Yang, Zimu Zhou, Longfei Shangguan, Yunhao Liu, Ke Yi

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Indoor localization is of great importance to a wide range of applications in the era of mobile computing. Current mainstream solutions rely on Received Signal Strength (RSS) of wireless signals as fingerprints to distinguish and infer locations. However, those methods suffer from fingerprint ambiguity that roots in multipath fading and temporal dynamics of wireless signals. Though pioneer efforts have resorted to motion-assisted or peer-assisted localization, they neither work in real time nor work without the help of peer users, which introduces extra costs and constraints, and thus degrades their practicality. To get over these limitations, we propose Argus, an image-assisted …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Security is a critical concern around the world. In many domains from cybersecurity to sustainability, limited security resources prevent complete security coverage at all times. Instead, these limited resources must be scheduled (or allocated or deployed), while simultaneously taking into account the importance of different targets, the responses of the adversaries to the security posture, and the potential uncertainties in adversary payoffs and observations, etc. Computational game theory can help generate such security schedules. Indeed, casting the problem as a Stackelberg game, we have developed new algorithms that are now deployed over multiple years in multiple applications for scheduling of …
