Optimal Network Topologies And Resource Mappings For Heterogeneous Networks-On-Chip, Haera Chung Jan 2013

Optimal Network Topologies And Resource Mappings For Heterogeneous Networks-On-Chip, Haera Chung

Dissertations and Theses

Communication has become a bottleneck for modern microprocessors and multi-core chips because metal wires don't scale. The problem becomes worse as the number of components increases and chips become bigger. Traditional Systems-on-Chips (SoCs) interconnect architectures are based on shared-bus communication, which can carry only one communication transaction at a time. This limits the communication bandwidth and scalability. Networks-on-Chip (NoC) were proposed as a promising solution for designing large and complex SoCs. The NoC paradigm provides better scalability and reusability for future SoCs, however, long-distance multi-hop communication through traditional metal wires suffers from both high latency and power consumption. A radical …

Interactive database exploration is a key task in information mining. However, users who lack SQL expertise or familiarity with the database schema face great difficulties in performing this task. To aid these users, we developed the QueRIE system for personalized query recommendations. QueRIE continuously monitors the user’s querying behavior and finds matching patterns in the system’s query log, in an attempt to identify previous users with similar information needs. Subsequently, QueRIE uses these “similar” users and their queries to recommend queries that the current user may find interesting. In this work we describe an instantiation of the QueRIE framework, where …

Accuracy, Cost And Performance Trade-Offs For Streaming Set-Wise Floating Point Accumulation On Fpgas, Krishna Kumar Nagar Jan 2013

Accuracy, Cost And Performance Trade-Offs For Streaming Set-Wise Floating Point Accumulation On Fpgas, Krishna Kumar Nagar

Theses and Dissertations

The set-wise summation operation is perhaps one of the most fundamental and widely used operations in scientific applications. In these applications, maintaining the accuracy of the summation is also important as floating point operations have inherent errors associated with them. Designing floating-point accumulators presents a unique set of challenges: double-precision addition is usually deeply pipelined and without special micro-architectural or data scheduling techniques, the data hazard that exists. There have been several efforts to design floating point accumulators and accurate summation architecture using different algorithms on FPGAs but these problems have been dealt with separately. In this dissertation, we present …

An Application For Keeping Track Of Food Item Expiration, Rejin Paul James Jan 2013

An Application For Keeping Track Of Food Item Expiration, Rejin Paul James

Theses and Dissertations

Food, honestly, is too precious to waste. Food wastage is a very serious issue prevalent in the world today. American households alone throw out an equivalent of $165 billion worth of food each year. People often forget to consume food they purchased before the expiration date, or sometimes they over-purchase food they can have, then throw them away. Hence, this thesis aims to prevent food wastage with the help of a smart phone application that helps keep track of food item expiration dates and gives you notification alerts when it is about to expire. It implements a barcode scanner for …

Automating Vendor Fraud Detection In Enterprise Systems, Kishore Singh, Peter Best, Joseph Mula

Journal of Digital Forensics, Security and Law

Fraud is a multi-billion dollar industry that continues to grow annually. Many organizations are poorly prepared to prevent and detect fraud. Fraud detection strategies are intended to quickly and efficiently identify fraudulent activities that circumvent preventative measures. In this paper, we adopt a DesignScience methodological framework to develop a model for detection of vendor fraud based on analysis of patterns or signatures identified in enterprise system audit trails. The concept is demonstrated by developing prototype software. Verification of the prototype is achieved by performing a series of experiments. Validation is achieved by independent reviews from auditing practitioners. Key findings of …

Book Review: Professional Penetration Testing: Creating And Learning In A Hacking Lab 2e, Joshua Bartolomie Jan 2013

Book Review: Professional Penetration Testing: Creating And Learning In A Hacking Lab 2e, Joshua Bartolomie

Journal of Digital Forensics, Security and Law

Organizations often strive for proactive information security programs in an effort to limit occurrence and impact of security breaches. However, traditional security programs run the risk of being unable to provide adequate insight and proactive awareness into real attack vectors that may exist within their organizations. With attack methods and efforts becoming increasingly aggressive, and effective, organizations must take equally assertive measures to protect their critical information and assets. Penetration testing is one of those tools that is often misunderstood, overlooked, and undervalued. A true adversary would not hesitate to exploit every potential to gain entry or cause a disruption …

Technology Corner: Calculating The Number Of Android Lock Patterns: An Unfinished Study In Number Theory, Gary C. Kessler

Journal of Digital Forensics, Security and Law

Although one is unlikely to ever want to brute-force an Android lock pattern, many do wonder about the relative strength of the lock pattern versus a multidigit personal identification number (PIN). It becomes obvious pretty quickly that there are many more lock patterns than the 10,000 possible four-digit PINs.

Book Review: Iphone And Ios Forensic: Investigation, Analysis And Mobile Security For Apple Iphone, Ipad And Ios Devices, Simson Garfinkel

Journal of Digital Forensics, Security and Law

In April 2011 news outlets around the world revealed shocking news about Apple’s iPhone: for reasons that were not apparently clear, every iPhone contained a small SQLite database that logged where and when the user had been whenever the phone was turned on, and those records went back for pretty much as long as the user had owned their phone. Apple eventually declared that the data cache was the result of a bug and issued a software update to prune the database (it had previously grown without limit). Privacy activists rejoiced that their beloved iPhones were once again trustworthy. But …

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

In this dissertation, we present a collection of manuscripts describing the development of prognostic models designed to assist clinical decision making. This work is motivated by limitations of commonly used techniques to produce accessible prognostic models with easily interpretable and clinically credible results. Such limitations hinder prognostic model widespread utilization in medical practice.

Our methodology is based on Rough Set Theory (RST) as a mathematical tool for clinical data anal- ysis. We focus on developing rule-based prognostic models for end-of life care decision making in an effort to improve the hospice referral process. The development of the prognostic models is …

Prevention And Detection Of Intrusions In Wireless Sensor Networks, Ismail Butun Jan 2013

Prevention And Detection Of Intrusions In Wireless Sensor Networks, Ismail Butun

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) continue to grow as one of the most exciting and challenging research areas of engineering. They are characterized by severely constrained computational and energy

resources and also restricted by the ad-hoc network operational

environment. They pose unique challenges, due to limited power

supplies, low transmission bandwidth, small memory sizes and limited energy. Therefore, security techniques used in traditional networks cannot be directly adopted. So, new ideas and approaches are needed, in order to increase the overall security of the network. Security applications in such resource constrained WSNs with minimum overhead provides significant challenges, and is the …

Dynamics And Control Of Higher-Order Nonholonomic Systems, Jaime Rubio HerváS Jan 2013

Dynamics And Control Of Higher-Order Nonholonomic Systems, Jaime Rubio HerváS

Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses

A theoretical framework is established for the control of higher-order nonholonomic systems, defined as systems that satisfy higher-order nonintegrable constraints. A model for such systems is developed in terms of differential-algebraic equations defined on a higher-order tangent bundle. A number of control-theoretic properties such as nonintegrability, controllability, and stabilizability are presented. Higher-order nonholonomic systems are shown to be strongly accessible and, under certain conditions, small time locally controllable at any equilibrium. There are important examples of higher-order nonholonomic systems that are asymptotically stabilizable via smooth feedback, including space vehicles with multiple slosh modes and Prismatic-Prismatic-Revolute (PPR) robots moving open liquid …

Nonlinear Control For Dual Quaternion Systems, William D. Price Jan 2013

Nonlinear Control For Dual Quaternion Systems, William D. Price

Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses

The motion of rigid bodies includes three degrees of freedom (DOF) for rotation, generally referred to as roll, pitch and yaw, and 3 DOF for translation, generally described as motion along the x, y and z axis, for a total of 6 DOF. Many complex mechanical systems exhibit this type of motion, with constraints, such as complex humanoid robotic systems, multiple ground vehicles, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), multiple spacecraft vehicles, and even quantum mechanical systems. These motions historically have been analyzed independently, with separate control algorithms being developed for rotation and translation. The goal of this research is to study …

Automated Color Calibration Of Display Devices, Andrew Shulman Jan 2013

Automated Color Calibration Of Display Devices, Andrew Shulman

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

If you compare two identical images on two different monitors, they will likely appear different. Every display device is supposed to adhere to a particular set of standards regulating the color and intensity of the image it outputs. However, in practice, very few do. Color calibration is the practice of modifying the signal path such that the colors produced more closely match reference standards. This is essential for graphics professionals who are mastering original content. They must ensure that the source material appears correct when viewed on a reference monitor. When viewed on a consumer panel, however, some error will …

Efficient Parallel Real-Time Upsampling Of Ultrasound Vectors, William D. Richard Ph.D. Jan 2013

Efficient Parallel Real-Time Upsampling Of Ultrasound Vectors, William D. Richard Ph.D.

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

Upsampling is required prior to the summation step in most receive digital beamforming implementations to produce an accurate summed RF line or vector. This is true in both annular and linear array systems where receive echos are digitized first and then time delayed in the digital domain to achieve proper signal alignment. The efficient, parallel, real-time upsampling circuit presented here produces M upsampled values per ADC clock, where M is the desired upsampling factor. A circuit implementation that upsamples by a factor of M=4 is presented as an example of the more general technique.

Adding Data Parallelism To Streaming Pipelines For Throughput Optimization, Peng Li, Kunal Agrawal, Jeremy Buhler, Roger D. Chamberlain Jan 2013

Adding Data Parallelism To Streaming Pipelines For Throughput Optimization, Peng Li, Kunal Agrawal, Jeremy Buhler, Roger D. Chamberlain

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

The streaming model is a popular model for writing high-throughput parallel applications. A streaming application is represented by a graph of computation stages that communicate with each other via FIFO channels. In this report, we consider the problem of mapping streaming pipelines — streaming applications where the graph is a linear chain — in order to maximize throughput. In a parallel setting, subsets of stages, called components can be mapped onto different computing resources. The through-put of an application is determined by the throughput of the slowest component. Therefore, if some stage is much slower than others, then it may …

The time instants of the fault occurrence and fault level are determined according to the number of activated detectors. Anomaly detection in the frequency domain is implemented by monitoring the fault indicator bearing frequencies and harmonics, calculated using the bearing dimensions and …

The Vortex Effect Of Francis Turbine In Electric Power Generation, Veli̇ Türkmenoğlu Jan 2013

The Vortex Effect Of Francis Turbine In Electric Power Generation, Veli̇ Türkmenoğlu

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In this study, the vibration effects of a vortex that occurred in high-head Francis turbines and an alternator are examined. The vortex effect, which directly affects the efficiency and the quality of the energy, was tested at the DarÔøΩca-1 hydroelectric power plant (HPP) located in Ordu Province, Turkey. Formed by undissolved oxygen in the water, the vortex effect, which is parallel to the alternator load, causes tremendous vibration within the alternator and Francis turbine bearings. This problem, which has a direct negative effect on the alternator capacity, was solved by adding an air-admission system. In doing so, power production was …

Circulating Current Analysis Between Strands In Armature Winding Of A Turbo-Generator Using Analytical Model, Karim Abbaszadeh, Farhad Rezaee Alam

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In this paper, the circulating current analysis between strands is studied while considering the different transpositions in the active part and without considering the transposition in the end winding region. First, this analysis is done while only considering the slot region, and then the end winding region is added to the model. The model used for this analysis is a circuit model, including the resistance and inductance of the strands and their induced back-electromotive force (EMF). The back-EMF sources and inductances are calculated through a 2D finite element analysis (FEA) of the active part and a 3D FEA for the …

Composite Power System Adequacy Assessment Based On Postoptimal Analysis, Amir Safdarian, Mahmood Fotuhi-Firuzabad, Farrokh Aminifar Jan 2013

Composite Power System Adequacy Assessment Based On Postoptimal Analysis, Amir Safdarian, Mahmood Fotuhi-Firuzabad, Farrokh Aminifar

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

The modeling and evaluation of enormous numbers of contingencies are the most challenging impediments associated with composite power system adequacy assessment, particularly for large-scale power systems. Optimal power flow (OPF) solution, as a widely common approach, is normally employed to model and analyze each individual contingency as an independent problem. However, mathematical representations associated with diverse states are slightly different in one or a few generating units, line outages, or trivial load variations. This inherent attribute brings a promising idea to speed up the contingency evaluation procedure. In this paper, postoptimal analysis (POA), as a well-recognized technique to attack a …

A Novel Multirobot Map Fusion Strategy For Occupancy Grid Maps, Sebahatti̇n Topal, İsmet Erkmen, Aydan Müşerref Erkmen Jan 2013

A Novel Multirobot Map Fusion Strategy For Occupancy Grid Maps, Sebahatti̇n Topal, İsmet Erkmen, Aydan Müşerref Erkmen

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In this paper, we consider the problem of merging partial occupancy grid environment maps, which are extracted independently by individual robot units during search and rescue (SAR) operations in icomplex disaster environments. Moreover, these maps are combined using intensity-based and area-based features without knowing the initial position and orientation of the robots. Our proposed approach handles the limitation of existing studies in the literature; for example, the limited overlapped area between partial maps of robots is enough for good merging performance and unstructured and complex partial environment maps can be merged efficiently. These abilities allow multirobot teams to efficiently generate …

Current-Mode Quadrature Oscillator Based On Cccdtas With Noninteractive Dual-Current Control For Both Condition Of Oscillation And Frequency Of Oscillation, Adirek Jantakun, Winai Jaikla Jan 2013

Current-Mode Quadrature Oscillator Based On Cccdtas With Noninteractive Dual-Current Control For Both Condition Of Oscillation And Frequency Of Oscillation, Adirek Jantakun, Winai Jaikla

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

The realization of 2 current-mode quadrature oscillators using current-controlled current differencing transconductance amplifiers (CCCDTAs) and grounded capacitors is presented. The proposed oscillators can provide 2 sinusoidal output currents with a 90° phase difference. They enable noninteractive dual-current control for both the condition of oscillation and the frequency ofi oscillation. The high-output impedances of the configurations enable the circuit to be cascaded without additional current buffers. The use of only grounded capacitors is ideal for integration. The circuit performances are depicted through PSpice simulations; they show good agreement to theoretical anticipation.

A Time--Memory Trade-Off Approach For The Solution Of Nonlinear Equation Systems, Hüseyi̇n Demi̇rci̇, Mahmut Şami̇l Sağiroğlu, Muhammed Oğuzhan Külekci̇ Jan 2013

A Time--Memory Trade-Off Approach For The Solution Of Nonlinear Equation Systems, Hüseyi̇n Demi̇rci̇, Mahmut Şami̇l Sağiroğlu, Muhammed Oğuzhan Külekci̇

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

We propose a memory-based method for the solution of a specific type of nonlinear equation systems. We observe that when the equations in a system can be separated into 2 parts, where each subset contains fewer parameters than the whole set of equations, the system can be solved faster with a preprocessing phase. We show that reduced rounds of AES produce such a system under a chosen plaintext scenario. This observation enables us to solve that system within a practically applicable complexity of 2^{37} operations where a brute force approach requires 2^{72} trials. The method can be used for the …

This paper proposes a real-time solution to the unit commitment problem by considering different constraints like ramp-up rate, unit operation emissions, next hours load, and minimum down time. In this method, an optimized trade-off between cost and emission has been taken into consideration. The effectiveness of the proposed method was verified by the significant outcomes demonstrated.

A Comparative Study In Power Oscillation Damping By Statcom And Sssc Based On The Multiobjective Pso Algorithm, Ali Ajami, Mehdi Armaghan Jan 2013

A Comparative Study In Power Oscillation Damping By Statcom And Sssc Based On The Multiobjective Pso Algorithm, Ali Ajami, Mehdi Armaghan

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

To improve the damping of power system oscillations by supplementary controller design for the static synchronous series compensator (SSSC) and static synchronous compensator (STATCOM), a multiobjective function based on the particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm for solving this optimization problem is introduced. The presented objective function includes the damping factor and the damping ratio of the lightly damped and undamped electromechanical modes. These controllers are adjusted to concurrently transfer the lightly damped and undamped electromechanical modes to a recommended region in the s-plane. For this purpose, the reduced linearized Phillips-Heffron model of the power system with a single machine and …
