Completeness For The Coalgebraic Cover Modality, Clemens Kupke, Alexander Kurz, Yde Venema
Completeness For The Coalgebraic Cover Modality, Clemens Kupke, Alexander Kurz, Yde Venema
Engineering Faculty Articles and Research
We study the finitary version of the coalgebraic logic introduced by L. Moss. The syntax of this logic, which is introduced uniformly with respect to a coalgebraic type functor, required to preserve weak pullbacks, extends that of classical propositional logic with a so-called coalgebraic cover modality depending on the type functor. Its semantics is defined in terms of a categorically defined relation lifting operation.
As the main contributions of our paper we introduce a derivation system, and prove that it provides a sound and complete axiomatization for the collection of coalgebraically valid inequalities. Our soundness and completeness proof is algebraic, …
Coalgebraic Logics (Dagstuhl Seminar 12411), Ernst-Erich Doberkat, Alexander Kurz
Coalgebraic Logics (Dagstuhl Seminar 12411), Ernst-Erich Doberkat, Alexander Kurz
Engineering Faculty Articles and Research
This report documents the program and the outcomes of Dagstuhl Seminar 12411 “Coalgebraic Logics”. The seminar deals with recent developments in the area of coalgebraic logic, a branch of logics which combines modal logics with coalgebraic semantics. Modal logic finds its uses when reasoning about behavioural and temporal properties of computation and communication, coalgebras have evolved into a general theory of systems. Consequently, it is natural to combine both areas for a mathematical description of system specification. Coalgebraic logics are closely related to the broader categories semantics/formal methods and verification/logic.
Real-Time Localization Using Received Signal Strength, Mohammed Rana Basheer
Real-Time Localization Using Received Signal Strength, Mohammed Rana Basheer
Doctoral Dissertations
"Locating and tracking assets in an indoor environment is a fundamental requirement for several applications which include for instance network enabled manufacturing. However, translating time of flight-based GPS technique for indoor solutions has proven very costly and inaccurate primarily due to the need for high resolution clocks and the non-availability of reliable line of sight condition between the transmitter and receiver. In this dissertation, localization and tracking of wireless devices using radio signal strength (RSS) measurements in an indoor environment is undertaken. This dissertation is presented in the form of five papers.
The first two papers deal with localization and …
Null Convention Logic Applications Of Asynchronous Design In Nanotechnology And Cryptographic Security, Jun Wu
Doctoral Dissertations
"This dissertation presents two Null Convention Logic (NCL) applications of asynchronous logic circuit design in nanotechnology and cryptographic security. The first application is the Asynchronous Nanowire Reconfigurable Crossbar Architecture (ANRCA); the second one is an asynchronous S-Box design for cryptographic system against Side-Channel Attacks (SCA). The following are the contributions of the first application: 1) Proposed a diode- and resistor-based ANRCA (DR-ANRCA). Three configurable logic block (CLB) structures were designed to efficiently reconfigure a given DR-PGMB as one of the 27 arbitrary NCL threshold gates. A hierarchical architecture was also proposed to implement the higher level logic that requires a …

Advanced Neural Networks And Their Applications In Smart Grids, Bipul Luitel
Doctoral Dissertations
"Today, neural networks (NN) are used in several system identification and nonlinear control system applications. However, their implementation on large systems has been limited either because of their degraded performance or the amount of time and computation required for implementing them being impractical for real applications. The primary emphasis of this research is on the development of advanced NN - simultaneous recurrent neural networks (SRN) and cellular neural networks (CNN); and methods for learning the complexity of large systems.
US electricity infrastructure is one of the largest and the most critical infrastructure consisting of thousands of generators connected by transmission …
Evaluating Speedup In Parallel Compilers, Deepa V. Komathukattil
Evaluating Speedup In Parallel Compilers, Deepa V. Komathukattil
UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Parallel programming is prevalent in every field mainly to speed up computation. Advancements in multiprocessor technology fuel this trend toward parallel programming. However, modern compilers are still largely single threaded and do not take advantage of the machine resources available to them. There has been a lot of work done on compilers that add parallel constructs to the programs they are compiling, enabling programs to exploit parallelism at run time. Auto parallelization of loops by a compiler is one such example. Researchers have done very little work towards parallelizing the compilation process itself.
The research done here focuses on parallel …
Column: Factors Affecting Data Decay, Kevin Fairbanks, Simson Garfinkel
Column: Factors Affecting Data Decay, Kevin Fairbanks, Simson Garfinkel
Journal of Digital Forensics, Security and Law
In nuclear physics, the phrase decay rate is used to denote the rate that atoms and other particles spontaneously decompose. Uranium-235 famously decays into a variety of daughter isotopes including Thorium and Neptunium, which themselves decay to others. Decay rates are widely observed and wildly different depending on many factors, both internal and external. U-235 has a half-life of 703,800,000 years, for example, while free neutrons have a half-life of 611 seconds and neutrons in an atomic nucleus are stable.

Technology Corner Automated Data Extraction Using Facebook, Nick V. Flor
Journal of Digital Forensics, Security and Law
Because of Facebook’s popularity, law enforcement agents often use it as a key source of evidence. But like many user digital trails, there can be a large amount of data to extract for analysis. In this paper, we explore the basics of extracting data programmatically from a user’s Facebook via a Web app. A data extraction app requests data using the Facebook Graph API, and Facebook returns a JSON object containing the data. Before an app can access a user’s Facebook data, the user must log into Facebook and give permission. Thus, this approach is limited to situations where users …

The book is available as a paperback and e-book. The e-book versions allow you to preview several chapters at any of a number of online vendors. The e-book prices vary from the same as the soft cover version ($59.99) to about $38.99. Some of the vendor's e-books retain the color illustrations found in the print version, but others produce them in grey scale, so you might want to look out for that. The book is divided into four parts (17 chapters) plus two appendices.
I am compelled to give the book illustrations a highly unfavorable assessment regarding their readability qualities. …

An Australian Perspective On The Challenges For Computer And Network Security For Novice Endusers, Patryk Szewczyk
An Australian Perspective On The Challenges For Computer And Network Security For Novice Endusers, Patryk Szewczyk
Journal of Digital Forensics, Security and Law
It is common for end-users to have difficulty in using computer or network security appropriately and thus have often been ridiculed when misinterpreting instructions or procedures. This discussion paper details the outcomes of research undertaken over the past six years on why security is overly complex for endusers. The results indicate that multiple issues may render end-users vulnerable to security threats and that there is no single solution to address these problems. Studies on a small group of senior citizens has shown that educational seminars can be beneficial in ensuring that simple security aspects are understood and used appropriately.

Identifying Trace Evidence From Target-Specific Data Wiping Application Software, Gregory H. Carlton, Gary C. Kessler
Journal of Digital Forensics, Security and Law
One area of particular concern for computer forensics examiners involves situations in which someone utilized software applications to destroy evidence. There are products available in the marketplace that are relatively inexpensive and advertised as being able to destroy targeted portions of data stored within a computer system. This study was undertaken to analyze a subset of these tools in order to identify trace evidence, if any, left behind on disk media after executing these applications. We evaluated five Windows 7 compatible software products whose advertised features include the ability for users to wipe targeted files, folders, or evidence of selected …

Extraction Of Electronic Evidence From Voip: Identification & Analysis Of Digital Speech, David Irwin, Arek Dadej, Jill Slay
Extraction Of Electronic Evidence From Voip: Identification & Analysis Of Digital Speech, David Irwin, Arek Dadej, Jill Slay
Journal of Digital Forensics, Security and Law
The Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) is increasing in popularity as a cost effective and efficient means of making telephone calls via the Internet. However, VoIP may also be an attractive method of communication to criminals as their true identity may be hidden and voice and video communications are encrypted as they are deployed across the Internet. This produces a new set of challenges for forensic analysts compared with traditional wire-tapping of the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) infrastructure, which is not applicable to VoIP. Therefore, other methods of recovering electronic evidence from VoIP are required. This research investigates the …

Journal of Digital Forensics, Security and Law
Computer Crime and computer related incidents continue their prevalence and frequency, resulting in losses approaching billions of dollars. To fight against these crimes and frauds, it is urgent to develop digital forensics education programs to train a suitable workforce that can effectively investigate computer crimes and incidents. There is presently no standard to guide the design of digital forensics curriculum for an academic program. In this research, previous work on digital forensics curriculum design and existing education programs are thoroughly investigated. Both digital forensics educators and practitioners were surveyed and results were analyzed to determine the industry and law enforcement …

The Science Of Digital Forensics: Recovery Of Data From Overwritten Areas Of Magnetic Media, Fred Cohen
Journal of Digital Forensics, Security and Law
The first time I encountered data loss and recovery effects of magnetic memory was as a night and weekend computer operator for the computer science department of Carnegie-Mellon University in the 1973-1974 time frame. Part of my job involved dealing directly with outages and failures associated with magnetic memory components used in what, at the time, were large computer systems. On occasions, portions of magnetic core memory or disk drives would encounter various failure modes and the systems using these devices would have to be reconfigured to operate without the failed components until repair personnel could come in to repair …

Automatic Crash Recovery: Internet Explorer's Black Box, John Moran, Douglas Orr
Journal of Digital Forensics, Security and Law
A good portion of today's investigations include, at least in part, an examination of the user's web history. Although it has lost ground over the past several years, Microsoft's Internet Explorer still accounts for a large portion of the web browser market share. Most users are now aware that Internet Explorer will save browsing history, user names, passwords and form history. Consequently some users seek to eliminate these artifacts, leaving behind less evidence for examiners to discover during investigations. However, most users, and probably a good portion of examiners are unaware Automatic Crash Recovery can leave a gold mine of …

Vermont state prosecutors have asked the Vermont Supreme Court to end a state trial judge’s practice of attaching conditions to computer warrants. The Vermont judge’s conditions are drawn from five conditions established in the 2009 decision of the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals in the Comprehensive Drug Testing, Inc. case (CDT II). This is the first time the validity of the “CDT conditions” will be decided by a state court of final jurisdiction in the United States
Kinect Hand Recognition And Tracking, Alex Drake
Kinect Hand Recognition And Tracking, Alex Drake
All Computer Science and Engineering Research
he goal of this research project was to be able to identify and track a hand using the depth image from a Microsoft Kinect. The ability to do this would have uses in sign language recognition, rehabilitation, and gesture recognition amongst others. The Microsoft Kinect is currently capable of identifying and tracking whole bodies. Our approach was to follow the method that Microsoft used but apply it to detailed hand recognition instead of the body. The basic strategy they used was to take a large amount of labeled depth data and build a decision tree to identify which part of …

Early Warning System: Relay Sensor Deployment & Network Reliability Analysis, Zhicheng Yang
All Computer Science and Engineering Research
In this project, we continued Dr. Chipara's study, which developed an early warning system (EWS) to detect the vital signs of patients in order to help doctors to intervene in time [1]. Since the number of wards increased, the environment our system faced with became more complicated and our network became more sensitive. This project focused on finding reasons on the relays that didn't work and doing a reliability analysis on the network in one ward our study covered.

Limitations And Solutions For Real-Time Local Inter-Domain Communication In Xen, Sisu Xi, Chong Li, Chenyang Lu, Christopher Gill
All Computer Science and Engineering Research
As computer hardware becomes increasingly powerful, there is an ongoing trend towards integrating complex, legacy real-time systems using fewer hosts through virtualization. Especially in embedded systems domains such as avionics and automotive engineering, this kind of system integration can greatly reduce system weight, cost, and power requirements. When systems are integrated in this manner, network communication may become local inter-domain communication (IDC) within the same host. This paper examines the limitations of inter-domain communication in Xen, a widely used open-source virtual machine monitor (VMM) that recently has been extended to support real-time domain scheduling. We find that both the VMM …
A New One-Level Convex Optimization Approach For Estimating Origin-Destination Demand, Wei Shen, Laura Wynter
A New One-Level Convex Optimization Approach For Estimating Origin-Destination Demand, Wei Shen, Laura Wynter
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Accurately estimating Origin–Destination (OD) trip tables based on traffic data has become crucial in many real-time traffic applications. The problem of OD estimation is traditionally modeled as a bilevel network design problem (NDP), which is challenging to solve in large-scale networks. In this paper, we propose a new one-level convex optimization formulation to reasonably approximate the bilevel structure, thus allowing the development of more efficient solution algorithms. This one-level approach is consistent with user equilibrium conditions, and improves previous one-level relaxed OD estimation formulations in the literature by ‘equilibrating’ path flows using external path cost parameters. Our new formulation can, …

Optimization Of Pilot Tones Using Differential Evolution Algorithm In Mimo-Ofdm Systems, Muhammet Nuri̇ Seyman, Necmi̇ Taşpinar
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
In this paper, we propose a differential evolution (DE) algorithm for optimizing the placement and power of the pilot tones that are utilized by a least square (LS) algorithm for channel estimation in multiple-input and multiple-output orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (MIMO-OFDM) systems. Computer simulations demonstrated that the performance of the LS algorithm was increased by optimizing the pilot tones with the DE algorithm instead of locating them orthogonally. We used the upper bound of the mean square error (MSE) as a fitness function of the DE algorithm for optimization tasks. With the use of an upper bound, it is not necessary …
