Flexible Tuning Software: Beyond Equal Temperament, Erica Sponsler May 2011

Flexible Tuning Software: Beyond Equal Temperament, Erica Sponsler

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

The premise of this creative Capstone project was to develop a computer instrument that is capable of tuning itself flexibly in such a way as to not require a tempering of the Western scale, as is necessary for fixedly tuned instruments. The difficulty in creating such a system of tuning arises from the mathematical paradox of the musical harmonic series, which is the sequence of frequencies that sound naturally as overtones over a fundamental pitch. They follow a proportional pattern of 1:2, 2:3, 3:4, etc. These small-integer ratios of frequencies represent the consonant (in-tune) harmonic intervals. When an interval does …

Strengthening The Anonymity Of Anonymous Communication Systems, Christopher Abbott May 2011

Strengthening The Anonymity Of Anonymous Communication Systems, Christopher Abbott

All Theses

In this work, we examine why a popular anonymity network, Tor, is vulnerable to timing side-channel attacks. We explore removing this vulnerability from Tor without sacrificing its low-latency which is important for usability.
We find that Tor is vulnerable because inter-packet delays propagate along the network path from the source to the destination. This provides an easily detected signature. We explore techniques for making the timing signature either expensive or impossible to detect.
If each packet took a unique, disjoint path from source to destination the inter-packet delay signature would be undetectable. Jitter and latency would change packet arrival orders. …

Implementing Transparent Compression And Leveraging Solid State Disks In A High Performance Parallel File System, David Bonnie May 2011

Implementing Transparent Compression And Leveraging Solid State Disks In A High Performance Parallel File System, David Bonnie

All Theses

In recent years computers have been increasing in compute density and speed at a dramatic pace. This increase allows for massively parallel programs to run faster than ever before. Unfortunately, many such programs are being held back by the relatively slow I/O subsystems that they are forced to work with. Storage technology simply has not followed the same curve of progression in the computing world. Because the storage systems are so slow in comparison the processors are forced to idle while waiting for data; a potentially performance crippling condition.
This performance disparity is lessened by the advent of parallel file …

Pose Estimation For Robotic Disassembly Using Ransac With Line Features, Shyam Sundar Aswadha Narayanan

All Theses

In this thesis, a new technique to recognize and estimate the pose of a given 3-D object from a single real image provided known prior knowledge of its approximate structure is proposed. Metrics to evaluate the correctness of a calculated pose are presented and analyzed. The traditional and the more recent approaches used in solving this problem are explored and the various methodologies adopted are discussed.
The first step in disassembling a given assembly from its image is to recognize the attitude and translation of each of its constituent components - a fundamental problem which is being addressed in this …

Scalable Capability-Based Authorization For High-Performance Parallel File Systems, Nicholas Mills May 2011

Scalable Capability-Based Authorization For High-Performance Parallel File Systems, Nicholas Mills

All Theses

As the size and scale of supercomputers continues to increase at an
exponential rate the number of users on a given supercomputer will
only grow larger. A larger number of users on a supercomputer places a
greater importance on the strength of information security. Nowhere is
this requirement for security more apparent than the file system, as
users expect their data to be protected from accidental or deliberate
modification.
In spite of the ever-increasing demand for more secure file system
access the majority of parallel file systems do not implement a robust
security protocol for fear it will negatively impact …

A Wireless Sensor Network For Monitoring Physical Activity, Physiological Response, And Environmental Conditions, Michael Leon Pook

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

Understanding movement is an important area of research for improving comfort and safety. Data collected from accelerometers and gyros attached to multiple parts of a body can be used to determine the type of physical activity in which an individual is engaging. Correlating this data with the individual's heart rate allows for the verification of the type of activity as well as observation of the amount of physical strain experienced during the activity. Additionally, data on environmental stimuli can be gathered in order to determine their effect on physical strain. Current research in the field has been limited by both …

Design And Performance Analysis Of Mac Schemes For Wireless Sensor Networks Powered By Ambient Energy Harvesting, Zhi Ang Eu, Hwee-Pink Tan, Winston K. G. Seah

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Energy consumption is a perennial issue in the design of wireless sensor networks (WSNs) which typically rely on portable sources like batteries for power. Recent advances in ambient energy harvesting technology have made it a potential and promising alternative source of energy for powering WSNs. By using energy harvesters with supercapacitors, WSNs are able to operate perpetually until hardware failure and in places where batteries are hard or impossible to replace. In this paper, we study the performance of different medium access control (MAC) schemes based on CSMA and polling techniques for WSNs which are solely powered by ambient energy …

Field-Programmable Gate Array Implementation Of A Scalable Integral Image Architecture Based On Systolic Arrays, Juan Alberto De La Cruz

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The integral image representation of an image is important for a large number of modern image processing algorithms. Integral image representations can reduce computation and increase the operating speed of certain algorithms, improving real-time performance. Due to increasing demand for real-time image processing performance, an integral image architecture capable of accelerating the calculation based on the amount of available resources is presented. Use of the proposed accelerator allows for subsequent stages of a design to have data sooner and execute in parallel. It is shown here how, with some additional resources used in the Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA), a …

Computational Efficiency Of A Hybrid Mass Concentration And Spherical Harmonic Modeling, Nathan Piepgrass May 2011

Computational Efficiency Of A Hybrid Mass Concentration And Spherical Harmonic Modeling, Nathan Piepgrass

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Through Spherical Harmonics, one can describe complex gravitational fields. However as the order and degree of the spherical harmonics increases, the computation speed rises exponentially. In addition, for onboard applications of spherical harmonics, the processors are radiation hardened in order to mitigate negative effects of the space environment on electronics. But, those processors have outdated processing speeds, resulting in a slower onboard spherical harmonic program.

This thesis examines a partial solution to the slow computation speed of spherical harmonics programs. The partial solution was to supplant the gravity models in the flight software. The spherical harmonics gravity model can be …

Clustering Educational Digital Library Usage Data: Comparisons Of Latent Class Analysis And K-Means Algorithms, Beijie Xu May 2011

Clustering Educational Digital Library Usage Data: Comparisons Of Latent Class Analysis And K-Means Algorithms, Beijie Xu

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

There are common pitfalls and neglected areas when using clustering approaches to solve educational problems. A clustering algorithm is often used without the choice being justified. Few comparisons between a selected algorithm and a competing algorithm are presented, and results are presented without validation. Lastly, few studies fully utilize data provided in an educational environment to evaluate their findings. In response to these problems, this thesis describes a rigorous study comparing two clustering algorithms in the context of an educational digital library service, called the Instructional Architect.

First, a detailed description of the chosen clustering algorithm, namely, latent class analysis …

Reconfigurable Systems: A Potential Solution To The Von Neumann Bottleneck, Damian L. Miller Apr 2011

Reconfigurable Systems: A Potential Solution To The Von Neumann Bottleneck, Damian L. Miller

Senior Honors Theses

The difficulty of overcoming the disparity between processor speeds and data access speeds, a condition known as the von Neumann bottleneck, has been a source of consternation for computer hardware developers for many years.  Although a number of temporary solutions have been proposed and implemented in modern machines, these solutions have only managed to treat the major symptoms, rather than solve the root problem.  As the number of transistors on a chip roughly doubles every two years, the von Neumann bottleneck has continued to tighten in spite of these solutions, prompting some computer hardware professionals to advocate a paradigm shift …

Nowadays, millions of Internet users watch and upload a large number of videos on User Generated Content (UGC) sites (e.g., Youtube) everyday. Moreover, online videos about hot events, such as breaking news and Olympic games, attract lots of users. In this paper, we study the characteristics of hot-event videos by collecting video traces of the largest UGC site in China for 28 days. We first empirically study statistical properties of such videos and find that hot-event videos contribute a large number of views, even though the total number of hotevent videos is relatively small. In addition, there exist extremely active …

Gpu-Based Global Illumination Using Lightcuts, Tong Zhang Apr 2011

Gpu-Based Global Illumination Using Lightcuts, Tong Zhang

Department of Computer Graphics Technology Degree Theses

Global Illumination aims to generate high quality images. But due to its high
requirements, it is usually quite slow. Research documented in this thesis was
intended to offer a hardware and software combined acceleration solution to
global illumination. The GPU (using CUDA) was the hardware part of the whole
method that applied parallelism to increase performance; the “Lightcuts”
algorithm proposed by Walter (2005) at SIGGRAPH 2005 acted as the software
method. As the results demonstrated in this thesis, this combined method offers
a satisfactory performance boost effect for relatively complex scenes.

Using Textual Features To Predict Popular Content On Digg, Paul H. Miller Apr 2011

Using Textual Features To Predict Popular Content On Digg, Paul H. Miller

Department of English: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Over the past few years, collaborative rating sites, such as Netflix, Digg and Stumble, have become increasingly prevalent sites for users to find trending content.  I used various data mining techniques to study Digg, a social news site, to examine the influence of content on popularity.  What influence does content have on popularity, and what influence does content have on users’ decisions?  Overwhelmingly, prior studies have consistently shown that predicting popularity based on content is difficult and maybe even inherently impossible.  The same submission can have multiple outcomes and content neither determines popularity, nor individual user decisions.  My results show …

A Cost-Benefit Analysis Of A Campus Computing Grid, Preston M. Smith Apr 2011

A Cost-Benefit Analysis Of A Campus Computing Grid, Preston M. Smith

Purdue Polytechnic Masters Theses

Any major research institution has a substantial number of computer systems on its campus, often in the scale of tens of thousands. Given that a large amount of scientific computing is appropriate for execution in an opportunistic environment, a campus grid is an inexpensive way to build a powerful computational resource. What is missing, though, is a model for making an informed decision on the cost-effectives of a campus grid. In this thesis, the author describes a model for measuring the costs and benefits of building a campus computing resource based on the institution’s existing investment in computing hardware.

Optimized Delay-Sensitive Multimedia Communications Over Wireless Networks, Haiyan Luo Apr 2011

Optimized Delay-Sensitive Multimedia Communications Over Wireless Networks, Haiyan Luo

Department of Computer Electronics and Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Multimedia communication is expected to be the major application of the next-generation wireless networks. However, providing delay-sensitive, loss-tolerant and resource-guzzling multimedia services over the current resource-limited wireless networks is still a very challenging task. In addition to their heterogeneous nature and resource limitation, wireless networks also suffer from channel variations and environmental changes. In this dissertation, we study the optimization techniques for wireless multimedia communications and address the issues from different theoretical and practical perspectives.

To solve the issues resulting from the increasingly heterogeneous wireless networks, we propose a framework for error resilient source coding and distributed application-layer error control, …

Multi-Channel Peer-To-Peer Streaming Systems As Resource Allocation Problems, Miao Wang

School of Computing: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

In the past few years, the Internet has witnessed the success of Peer-to-Peer (P2P) streaming technology, which has attracted millions of users. More recently, commercial P2P streaming systems have begun to support multiple channels and a user in such systems is allowed to watch more than one channel at a time. We refer to such systems as multi-channel P2P streaming systems. In this dissertation, we focus on designing multi-channel P2P streaming systems with the goal of providing optimal streaming quality for all channels, termed as system-wide optimal streaming quality. Specifically, we design the systems from the perspective of how to …

Offline Optimization Of Advance Reservation Of Bandwidth Over Dynamic Circuit Networks, Pragatheeswaran Angu

School of Computing: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

E-science projects require very high-speed and reliable networks to transfer data across various destinations in the world. Dynamic Circuit Network (DCN) is a networking service to make advance reservation of bandwidth between a source and a destination in a network. In this thesis we solve the problem of advance reservation of bandwidth in next-generation wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) networks using a simulation based approach.
We implement a greedy algorithm and a genetic algorithm in parallel, in separate threads. The request for advance reservation is processed by both but the user gets the response only from the greedy algorithm. The genetic algorithm …

Reliability Testing Of Algan/Gan Hemts Under Multiple Stressors, Bradley D. Christiansen, Ronald A. Coutu Jr., Eric R. Heller, Brian S. Poling, Glen D. Via, Ramakrishna Vetury, Jeffrey B. Shealy Apr 2011

Reliability Testing Of Algan/Gan Hemts Under Multiple Stressors, Bradley D. Christiansen, Ronald A. Coutu Jr., Eric R. Heller, Brian S. Poling, Glen D. Via, Ramakrishna Vetury, Jeffrey B. Shealy

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

We performed an experiment on AlGaN/GaN HEMTs with high voltage and high power as stressors. We found that devices tested under high power generally degraded more than those tested under high voltage. In particular, the high-voltage-tested devices did not degrade significantly as suggested by some papers in the literature. The same papers in the literature also suggest that high voltages cause cracks and pits. However, the high-voltage-tested devices in this study do not exhibit cracks or pits in TEM images, while the high-power-tested devices exhibit pits.

Interactivity-Constrained Server Provisioning In Large-Scale Distributed Virtual Environments, Nguyen Binh Duong Ta, Thang Nguyen, Suiping Zhou, Xueyan Tang, Wentong Cai, Rassul Ayani Apr 2011

Interactivity-Constrained Server Provisioning In Large-Scale Distributed Virtual Environments, Nguyen Binh Duong Ta, Thang Nguyen, Suiping Zhou, Xueyan Tang, Wentong Cai, Rassul Ayani

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Maintaining interactivity is one of the key challenges in distributed virtual environments (DVE), e.g., online games, distributed simulations, etc., due to the large, heterogeneous Internet latencies; and the fact that clients in a DVE are usually geographically separated. In this paper, we consider a new problem, termed the interactivity-constrained server provisioning problem, whose goal is to minimize the number of distributed servers needed to achieve a pre-determined level of interactivity. We identify and formulate two variants of this new problem and show that they are both NP-hard via reductions to the set covering problem. We then propose several computationally efficient …

A Relaxed Fusion Of Information From Real And Synthetic Images To Predict Complex Behavior, Damian M. Lyons, D. Paul Benjamin Apr 2011

A Relaxed Fusion Of Information From Real And Synthetic Images To Predict Complex Behavior, Damian M. Lyons, D. Paul Benjamin

Faculty Publications

An important component of cognitive robotics is the ability to mentally simulate physical processes and to compare the expected results with the information reported by a robot's sensors. In previous work, we have proposed an approach that integrates a 3D game-engine simulation into the robot control architecture. A key part of that architecture is the Match-Mediated Difference (MMD) operation, an approach to fusing sensory data and synthetic predictions at the image level. The MMD operation insists that simulated and predicted scenes are similar in terms of the appearance of the objects in the scene. This is an overly restrictive constraint …
