Harvesting Single Ferroelectric Domain Stressed Nanoparticles For Optical And Ferroic Applications, Gary Cook, J. L. Barnes, S. A. Basun, Dean R. Evans, Ron F. Ziolo, Arturo Ponce, Victor Yu. Reshetnyak, Anatoliy Glushchenko, Partha P. Banerjee

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

We describe techniques to selectively harvest single ferroelectric domain nanoparticles of BaTiO3 as small as 9 nm from a plethora of nanoparticles produced by mechanical grinding. High resolution transmission electron microscopy imaging shows the unidomain atomic structure of the nanoparticles and reveals compressive and tensile surface strains which are attributed to the preservation of ferroelectric behavior in these particles.

We demonstrate the positive benefits of using harvested nanoparticles in disparate liquid crystal systems.

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

We describe preliminary results of a set of laser beam propagation experiments performed over a long (149 km) near-horizontal propagation path between Mauna Loa (Hawaii Island) and Haleakala (Island of Maui) mountains in February 2010. The distinctive feature of the experimental campaign referred to here as the Coherent Multi-Beam Atmospheric Transceiver (COMBAT) experiments is that the measurements of the atmospheric-turbulence induced laser beam intensity scintillations at the receiver telescope aperture were obtained simultaneously using three laser sources (laser beacons) with different wavelengths (λ1 = 0.53 μm, λ2 = 1.06 μm, and λ3 = 1.55 μm). The presented experimental results on …

Efficient Modular Arithmetic Units For Low Power Cryptographic Applications, Rajashekhar Reddy Modugu Jan 2010

Efficient Modular Arithmetic Units For Low Power Cryptographic Applications, Rajashekhar Reddy Modugu

Masters Theses

"The demand for high security in energy constrained devices such as mobiles and PDAs is growing rapidly. This leads to the need for efficient design of cryptographic algorithms which offer data integrity, authentication, non-repudiation and confidentiality of the encrypted data and communication channels. The public key cryptography is an ideal choice for data integrity, authentication and non-repudiation whereas the private key cryptography ensures the confidentiality of the data transmitted. The latter has an extremely high encryption speed but it has certain limitations which make it unsuitable for use in certain applications. Numerous public key cryptographic algorithms are available in the …

Fpga Implementation Of Pso Algorithm And Neural Networks, Parviz Palangpour Jan 2010

Fpga Implementation Of Pso Algorithm And Neural Networks, Parviz Palangpour

Masters Theses

"This thesis describes the Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) implementations of two powerful techniques of Computational Intelligence (CI), the Particle Swarm Optimization algorithm (PSO) and the Neural Network (NN). Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) is a popular population-based optimization algorithm. While PSO has been shown to perform well in a large variety of problems, PSO is typically implemented in software. Population-based optimization algorithms such as PSO are well suited for execution in parallel stages. This allows PSO to be implemented directly in hardware and achieve much faster execution times than possible in software. In this thesis, a pipelined architecture for hardware …

Development Of Novel Backscatter Communication Systems Using A Multi-Hop Framework And Distributed Beamforming, Vikram Reddy Surendra Jan 2010

Development Of Novel Backscatter Communication Systems Using A Multi-Hop Framework And Distributed Beamforming, Vikram Reddy Surendra

Masters Theses

"The goal of this thesis it to develop a wireless networking framework for battery-free devices based on passive, backscatter communication. In contrast to traditional, active communication systems, where the radio signal has to be generated using large amount of energy from batteries, the passive systems reflect the RF signal. The information is encoded by modulating the reflected signal, which consumes significantly less energy than active transmission. The existing passive, backscatter systems have limited communication capabilities. For example, the Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) systems support short-distance, direct communication between active reader and passive tags. The communication range is limited due to …

Embedded Optimal Control Of Mobile Robot Formations Using Neural Networks, Bryan M. Brenner Jan 2010

Embedded Optimal Control Of Mobile Robot Formations Using Neural Networks, Bryan M. Brenner

Masters Theses

"This work first presents the development of a nearly-optimal control scheme and then evaluates the effectiveness of this nearly-optimal control scheme by comparing it to a non optimal controller in Paper I. It is shown that the proposed nearly-optimal scheme is a significant improvement over the non optimal one in both simulation and hardware tests. The test was carried out on a differentially driven robotic vehicle in both obstacle free and obstacle ridden environments. On the other hand, the controller introduced for the obstacle avoidance in Paper II will also function in the absence of obstacles so that no switching …

Automatic Detection Of Malignant Melanoma Using Boundary Gradient Information In Dermoscopy Images, Yogesh Ajit Dandekar Jan 2010

Automatic Detection Of Malignant Melanoma Using Boundary Gradient Information In Dermoscopy Images, Yogesh Ajit Dandekar

Masters Theses

"This thesis demonstrates an algorithm which uses local border features, primarily derived from the border gradient, to help determine whether the lesion is a malignant melanoma or a benign lesion. Although this algorithm uses manually-marked lesion borders, it could be included in a fully automatic routine. A Prewitt algorithm with a window size proportional to the area of the lesion is used to calculate the gradient over the entire lesion boundary. This gradient value is used to calculate various boundary features, such as mean, standard deviation, and direction of maximum gradient. The dark and white areas inside the lesion combined …

Adaptive User Interface For Vehicle Swarm Control, Paul Robinette Jan 2010

Adaptive User Interface For Vehicle Swarm Control, Paul Robinette

Masters Theses

"An algorithm to automatically generate behaviors for robotic vehicles has been created and tested in a laboratory setting. This system is designed to be applied in situations where a large number of robotic vehicles must be controlled by a single operator. The system learns what behaviors the operator typically issues and offers these behaviors to the operator in future missions. This algorithm uses the symbolic clustering method Gram-ART to generate these behaviors. Gram-ART has been shown to be successful at clustering such standard symbolic problems as the mushroom dataset and the Unix commands dataset. The algorithm was tested by having …

Gpu Based Processing For Airborne Detection, Dheeraj Singiresu

Masters Theses

"Onboard real-time processing is highly desirable in airborne detection applications. As the data processing involved here is computationally expensive, typically high power multi-rack system is required to achieve real-time detection. Use of such hardware is often not feasible in an airborne application due to space, power and weight constraints. In this thesis, different computing architectures suitable for real-time onboard processing are compared in terms of computation speed, watts/GFLOPS, and weight/GFLOPS. A brief description of the modem GPU architecture and the current GPGPU technology is provided. GPU implementations of some computationally expensive image processing applications such as band-to-band registration for Multi …

Target Detection And Feature Evaluation Of Airborne Mine Target Images, Deepika Kamakshi Timmavajjula

Masters Theses

"Target segmentation and detection problem is one of the preliminary approaches in analyzing an image. Many edge, region and texture based techniques have been proposed in literature. These techniques often have limitations based on types of image data, kind of segmentation of interest and the problem domain. Mine detection problem dealt with for this thesis has mine target images which have a center target consisting of false alarm or mine patch which has to be detected and features evaluated to evaluate various parameter performances. Thus, segmenting the mine patch becomes the first step of analyzing these images. This thesis is …

Forty Years Of Movie Hacking: Considering The Potential Implications Of The Popular Media Representation Of Computer Hackers From 1968 To 2008, Damian Gordon

Articles

Increasingly movies are being produced which feature plots that incorporate elements of computer security and hacking, and cumulatively these movies are creating a public perception as to the nature of computer security. This research examines movies that feature hackers (and hacking) to identify if any common themes emerge from these movies in their representation of these issues. To achieve this, first a corpus of hacking movies is created, and then using a qualitative data analysis technique, guidelines are developed which distinguish those movies that actually have the potential to create a perception with the general public. The resultant dataset is …

Defending Privacy: The Development And Deployment Of A Darknet, Conor Mcmanamon, Fredrick Mtenzi

Conference papers

New measures imposed by governments, Internet service providers and other third parties which threaten the state of privacy are also opening new avenues to protecting it. The unwarranted scrutiny of legitimate services such as file hosters and the BitTorrent protocol, once relatively unknown to the casual Internet user, is becoming more obvious. The darknet is a rising contender against these new measures and will preserve the default right to privacy of Internet users. A darknet is defined in the context of file sharing as a network which operates on top of another network such as the Internet for the purpose …

Helmsman, Set A Course : Using A Compass And Rfid Tags For Indoor Localisation And Navigation, Yan Li, Brian Mac Namee, John D. Kelleher

Conference papers

Localisation and navigation are still two of the most important issues in mobile robotics. In certain indoor application scenarios RFID (radio frequency identification)-based absolute localisation has been found to be especially successful in supporting navigation. In this paper we evaluate the feasibility of an RFID and compass based approach to robot localisation and navigation for indoor environments that are dominated by corridors. We describe our system and evaluate its performance in a small, but full-scale, test environment.

Evaluating Sensorineural Hearing Loss With An Auditory Nerve Model Using A Mean Structural Similarity Measure, Andrew Hines, Naomi Harte Jan 2010

Evaluating Sensorineural Hearing Loss With An Auditory Nerve Model Using A Mean Structural Similarity Measure, Andrew Hines, Naomi Harte

Conference papers

Hearing loss research has traditionally been based on perceptual criteria, speech intelligibility and threshold levels. The development of computational models of the auditory-periphery has allowed experimentation via simulation to provide quantitative, repeatable results at a more granular level than would be practical with clinical research on human subjects. This work seeks to create an objective measure to automate this inspection process and ranks hearing losses based on auditory-nerve discharge patterns. A systematic way of assessing phonemic degradation using the outputs of an auditory nerve model for a range of sensorineural hearing losses would aid in rapid prototyping development of speech-processing …

Simulating 3d With Mono Video, James J. Hooker

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

There are different techniques to manipulate certain characteristics within mono videos to create a 3D effect when rendered and viewed. One is to display a selected frame to one eye and a different frame to the other eye so that movement of scene parts on the retina between different frames is interpreted by the viewer as visual disparity and, as a result, creates a 3D scene. Testing using StereoDisplay, a custom developed application using this technique, showed that it is effective in providing a 3D effect with some videos. Motion of the camera is required for a 3-D effect, restricting …

Robotic Goal-Based Semi-Autonomous Algorithms Improve Remote Operator Performance, Shawn Hunt Jan 2010

Robotic Goal-Based Semi-Autonomous Algorithms Improve Remote Operator Performance, Shawn Hunt

Wayne State University Dissertations

The focus of this research was to determine if reliable goal-based semi-autonomous algorithms are able to improve remote operator performance or not. Two semi-autonomous algorithms were examined: visual servoing and visual dead reckoning. Visual servoing uses computer vision techniques to generate movement commands while using internal properties of the camera combined with sensor data that tell the robot its current position based on its previous position. This research shows that the semi-autonomous algorithms developed increased performance in a measurable way. An analysis of tracking algorithms for visual servoing was conducted and tracking algorithms were enhanced to make them as robust …

Unified Role Assignment Framework For Wireless Sensor Networks, Manish Mahendra Kumar Kochhal

Wayne State University Dissertations

Wireless sensor networks are made possible by the continuing improvements in embedded sensor, VLSI, and wireless radio technologies. Currently, one of the important challenges in sensor networks is the design of a systematic network management framework that allows localized and collaborative resource control uniformly across all application services such as sensing, monitoring, tracking, data aggregation, and routing.

The research in wireless sensor networks is currently oriented toward a cross-layer network abstraction that supports appropriate fine or course grained resource controls for energy efficiency. In that regard, we have designed a unified role-based service paradigm for wireless sensor networks. We pursue …
