Transmitter Optimization In Multiuser Wireless Systems With Quality Of Service Constraints, Danda B. Rawat
Transmitter Optimization In Multiuser Wireless Systems With Quality Of Service Constraints, Danda B. Rawat
Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations
In this dissertation, transmitter adaptation for optimal resource allocation in wireless communication systems are investigated. First, a multiple access channel model is considered where many transmitters communicate with a single receiver. This scenario is a basic component of a. wireless network in which multiple users simultaneously access the resources of a wireless service provider. Adaptive algorithms for transmitter optimization to meet Quality-of-Service (QoS) requirements in a distributed manner are studied. Second, an interference channel model is considered where multiple interfering transmitter-receiver pairs co-exist such that a given transmitter communicates with its intended receiver in the presence of interference from other …
Delta-Sigma Subarray Beamforming For Ultrasound Imaging, Hasan Şaki̇r Bi̇lge
Delta-Sigma Subarray Beamforming For Ultrasound Imaging, Hasan Şaki̇r Bi̇lge
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
In this study, an ultrasonic digital beamformer based on subarray processing of 1-bit delta-sigma (\Delta \Sigma ) oversampled echo signals is presented. The single-bit oversampling \Delta \Sigma conversion simplifies the coherent processing in beamforming with improved timing accuracy. Subarray processing also aims to simplify the beamforming complexity, where the partial-beam sums (low-resolution beams) are acquired from small subarrays, and then these partial beams are coherently processed for producing high-resolution beams. In the \Delta \Sigma subarray beamforming, the \Delta \Sigma coded echo signals are summed over the subarray channels, and then these partial beam-sums are first \Delta \Sigma demodulated, then processed …

State Variable Distributed-Parameter Representation Of Transmission Line For Transient Simulations, Mehmet Sali̇h Mami̇ş, Asim Kaygusuz, Muhammet Köksal
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
In this paper, a distributed-parameter state variable approach is used to calculate transients on transmission lines based on the concept of travelling waves. The method of characteristics for lossless line is used and the state equations are derived for the system. These equations are converted to a set of difference equations using the trapezoidal rule of integration and solved in time domain using LU decomposition. Single- and multi-phase transmission lines with various linear and non-linear terminations are considered in the illustrative examples. State-space modeling of transposed lines using modal decomposition is introduced and the effects caused by lumped parameter approximation …
On Coalgebras Over Algebras, Adriana Balan, Alexander Kurz
On Coalgebras Over Algebras, Adriana Balan, Alexander Kurz
Engineering Faculty Articles and Research
We extend Barr’s well-known characterization of the final coalgebra of a Set-endofunctor as the completion of its initial algebra to the Eilenberg-Moore category of algebras for a Set-monad M for functors arising as liftings. As an application we introduce the notion of commuting pair of endofunctors with respect to the monad M and show that under reasonable assumptions, the final coalgebra of one of the endofunctors involved can be obtained as the free algebra generated by the initial algebra of the other endofunctor.
Families Of Symmetries As Efficient Models Of Resource Binding, Vincenzo Ciancia, Alexander Kurz, Ugo Montanari
Families Of Symmetries As Efficient Models Of Resource Binding, Vincenzo Ciancia, Alexander Kurz, Ugo Montanari
Engineering Faculty Articles and Research
Calculi that feature resource-allocating constructs (e.g. the pi-calculus or the fusion calculus) require special kinds of models. The best-known ones are presheaves and nominal sets. But named sets have the advantage of being finite in a wide range of cases where the other two are infinite. The three models are equivalent. Finiteness of named sets is strictly related to the notion of finite support in nominal sets and the corresponding presheaves. We show that named sets are generalisd by the categorical model of families, that is, free coproduct completions, indexed by symmetries, and explain how locality of interfaces gives good …

Algebraic Theories Over Nominal Sets, Alexander Kurz, Daniela Petrişan, Jiří Velebil
Engineering Faculty Articles and Research
We investigate the foundations of a theory of algebraic data types with variable binding inside classical universal algebra. In the first part, a category-theoretic study of monads over the nominal sets of Gabbay and Pitts leads us to introduce new notions of finitary based monads and uniform monads. In a second part we spell out these notions in the language of universal algebra, show how to recover the logics of Gabbay-Mathijssen and Clouston-Pitts, and apply classical results from universal algebra.
E-Fraud Prevention Based On The Self-Authentication Of E-Documents, Jonathan Blackledge, Eugene Coyle
E-Fraud Prevention Based On The Self-Authentication Of E-Documents, Jonathan Blackledge, Eugene Coyle
Conference papers
We consider a method for preventing e-Fraud in which a binary image is encrypted with a floating point cipher using a convolution operation and the output quantized into a 1-bit array generating a binary image ciphertext. The output is then ‘embedded’ in a host image to hide the encrypted information. Embedding is undertaken either in the lowest 1-bit layer or multiple 1-bit layers. Decryption is accomplished by: (i) extracting the binary image from the host image; (ii) correlating the result with the original cipher. In principle, any cipher generator can be used for this purpose and the method has been …
Authentication Of Biometric Features Using Texture Coding For Id Cards, Jonathan Blackledge, Eugene Coyle
Authentication Of Biometric Features Using Texture Coding For Id Cards, Jonathan Blackledge, Eugene Coyle
Conference papers
The use of image based information exchange has grown rapidly over the years in terms of both e-to-e image storage and transmission and in terms of maintaining paper documents in electronic form. Further, with the dramatic improvements in the quality of COTS (Commercial-Off-The-Shelf) printing and scanning devices, the ability to counterfeit electronic and printed documents has become a widespread problem. Consequently, there has been an increasing demand to develop digital watermarking techniques which can be applied to both electronic and printed images (and documents) that can be authenticated, prevent unauthorized copying of their content and, in the case of printed …
Wired For War: The Robotics Revolution And Conflict In The Twenty-First Century, Frank Rosenblatt
Wired For War: The Robotics Revolution And Conflict In The Twenty-First Century, Frank Rosenblatt
Journal Articles
Pity the librarian who receives a copy of P.W. Singer's Wired for War and must decide where to put it. Since the book wrestles with the changing nature of warfare, it could fit in with other books on war and military affairs. It may also belong in the science fiction section, since it is largely a tribute to the vision of science fiction writers such as Isaac Asimov. Perhaps Wired for War should go alongside works by other futurist thinkers such as George Orwell and Freeman Dyson. Is it really an ethics book? A science text? Strong arguments could be …
A Subthreshold Reconfigurable Architecture For Harsh Environments, Ameet Chavan
A Subthreshold Reconfigurable Architecture For Harsh Environments, Ameet Chavan
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Energy harvesting and functional reconfigurability are necessary features in order to simultaneously achieve longer operating lifetimes and versatility in application for many next generation electronic systems. The presented research incorporates capabilities that not only enable applications to self-power from ambience but also permit change in functionality based on real-time application requirements. Currently, many applications are battery powered with custom hardware, which severely confines the application platform. Moreover, maintenance and upgrades are prohibitively expensive, particularly in the case of remote locations with limited accessibility. For harsh environments like Space or the battlefield, apart from features such as low power and reconfigurability, …

An Investigation Of Semantic Links To Archetypes In An External Clinical Terminology Through The Construction Of Terminological "Shadows", Sheng Yu, Damon Berry, Jesús Bisbal
Conference Papers
The two-level model based specifications for electronic health record communication EHRcom (ISO 13606) and openEHR both support the embedding of terminological references in Archetypes. This terminological binding can be created manually by a health terminology expert during Archetype design, and the binding is assessed during Archetype evaluation. There has also been some recent work on using lexical queries to generate term sets to represent concepts in Archetypes. This work created an information construct which we call a Terminological Shadow that links Archetype nodes to sets of candidate concepts from a terminology system. The coding scheme used for this work is …
Adaptive Hysteresis Band Control For Constant Switching Frequency In Dtc Induction Machine Drives, H. İbrahi̇m Okumuş, Mustafa Aktaş
Adaptive Hysteresis Band Control For Constant Switching Frequency In Dtc Induction Machine Drives, H. İbrahi̇m Okumuş, Mustafa Aktaş
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
It is fairly well known that direct torque control (DTC) exhibits fast dynamic torque response, a property that originates in the fact that torque and flux is directly controlled by instantaneous space voltage vector, unlike field-oriented control. For this reason direct torque control gradually has been used in the field, eliciting quick response and high efficiency since its introduction in the mid-1980s. Conventional fixed band hysteresis control has several problems. One of these is variable switching frequency, which causes serious problems in DTC. In this paper, an adaptive hysteresis band control strategy is proposed, where the hysteresis band is controlled …
Artificial Neural Network Based Chaotic Generator For Cryptology, İlker Dalkiran, Kenan Danişman
Artificial Neural Network Based Chaotic Generator For Cryptology, İlker Dalkiran, Kenan Danişman
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Chaotic systems are sensitive to initial conditions, system parameters and topological transitivity and these properties are also remarkable for cryptanalysts. Noise like behavior of chaotic systems is the main reason of using these systems in cryptology. However some properties of chaotic systems such as synchronization, fewness of parameters etc. cause serious problems for cryptology. In this paper, to overcome disadvantages of chaotic systems, the dynamics of Chua's circuit namely x, y and z were modeled using Artificial Neural Network (ANN). ANNs have some distinctive capabilities like learning from experiences, generalizing from a few data and nonlinear relationship between inputs and …

The Effect Of The Channel Reliability Factor In The Map Algorithm On Turbo Code Performance In Bluetooth Systems, Sali̇m Kahveci̇, İsmai̇l Kaya
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
The effects of the channel reliability factor on the performance of turbo decoders that use a maximum a posteriori probability algorithm are investigated for wireless communication fading channels, such as Bluetooth systems. The channel reliability factor is related to the channel signal-to-noise ratio. For various values of the channel reliability factor, the obtained performance curves of the maximum a posteriori probability algorithm are given for the case of DMx Bluetooth data packets. When the channel reliability factor increases, the bit-error-rate performance of the DMx Bluetooth data packets also increases over fading channels.

The Effect Of Heat On The Metallurgical Structure And B-H Characteristic Of (Stator) Armature With Iron-Silicon Alloy In Electric Machines, Fevzi̇ Kentli̇, Ümi̇t Kemaletti̇n Terzi̇
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Coils in electric machines are varnished for insulation after winding. These varnished coils are formed in stiff construction in slots. Under heavy-duty operating conditions, all or part of some coils may be burnt or broken. Thermal method is one of several ways to remove the defective coils. In this method, current is passed through the defective coils by an autotransformer (variac) until all the varnish of the coils is burned. If all the coils are out of order, the varnish is burned by replacing the stator or armature in a burning room. Consequently, defective coils in the stator (armature) slots …

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
This paper presents a Least Absolute Value (LAV) state estimator for power system using a new method called Recursive Least Squares (RLS). Also, a suitable model is used for state estimation of power system that includes a Unified Power Flow Controller (UPFC). The IEEE 14-bus test system is used to show the validity of the proposed algorithm in estimation of power system states as well as the states of controllable parameters of UPFC.

A Model Based Nonlinear Adaptive Controller For The Passive Bilateral Telerobotic System, Ufuk Özbay, Erkan Zergeroğlu, İlyas Kandemi̇r
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
IIn this paper, we propose a new adaptive controller scheme for the bilateral telerobotic/teleoperation systems. The proposed controller achieves asymptotic tracking despite the parametric uncertainties associated with both master and slave robots while ensuring the passivity of the closed loop system. Extensive simulation studies are presented to illustrate the feasibility and efficiency of the proposed adaptive controller.

Design And Evaluation Of A Linear Switched Reluctance Actuator For Positioning Tasks, António Espírito Santo, Rosário Calado, Carlos Cabrita
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
This paper presents the development of a new linear switched reluctance actuator and confirms its applicability to perform positioning tasks. After the explanation of the actuator working principle and the presentation of its electromechanical topology, an analysis is accomplished using a finite elements tool. Based on the theoretical results, an experimental prototype that can develop 150 N was constructed. Its behaviour is observed under two different control methods implemented with microcontrollers. Initially, position is controlled applying a single pulse-driving scheme. Meanwhile, significant improvements are obtained with the introduction of a sliding-mode controller, allowing movements with 1 mm of resolution.

An Approach Based On Particle Swarm Computation To Study The Nanoscale Dg Mosfet-Based Circuits, Fayacl Djeffal, Toufik Bendib, Redha Benzid, Abdelhamid Benhaya
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
The analytical modeling of nanoscale Double-Gate MOSFETs (DG) requires generally several necessary simplifying assumptions to lead to compact expressions of current-voltage characteristics for nanoscale CMOS circuits design. Further, progress in the development, design and optimization of nanoscale devices necessarily require new theory and modeling tools in order to improve the accuracy and the computational time of circuits' simulators. In this paper, we propose a new particle swarm strategy to study the nanoscale CMOS circuits. The latter is based on the 2-D numerical Non-Equilibrium Green's Function (NEGF) simulation and a new extended long channel DG MOSFET compact model. Good agreement between …

The power quality (PQ) requirement is one of the most important issues for power companies and their customers. Continuously monitoring the PQ from remote and distributed centers will help to improve the PQ. In this study, a remote power quality monitoring system for low voltage sub-networks is developed using MATLAB Server Pages (MSP). MATLAB Server Pages, which is an open source technical web programming language, combines MATLAB with integrated J2EE specifications. The proposed PQ monitoring system uses the MATLAB HTML tag library and the data captured by the DAQ hardware to evaluate the Power Quality parameters. The proposed system can …

Asynchronous Particle Swarm Optimization-Based Search With A Multi-Robot System: Simulation And Implementation On A Real Robotic System, Sali̇h Burak Akat, Veysel Gazi̇, Lino Marques
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
In this article we consider a version of the Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm which is appropriate for search tasks of multi-agent systems consisting of small robots with limited sensing capability. The proposed method adopts asynchronous mechanism for information exchange and position (way point) updates of the agents. Moreover, at each (information exchange) step the agents communicate with only a possibly different subset of the other agents leading to a dynamic neighborhood topology. We implement the algorithm using the Player/Stage realistic robot simulator as well as on real KheperaIII robots using experimentally collected realistic data of ethanol gas concentration. Simulation …

Effect Of Transformer On Stochastic Estimation Of Voltage Sag Due To Faults In The Power System: A Pscad/Emtdc Simulation, Nita R. Patne, K. L. Thakre
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Voltage sags in the electric power system are mostly due to faults in the power system. Voltage sag is characterized by its magnitude (the retained voltage), phase-angle jump, unbalance in the sag in the three phases, and duration. Type of transformers in the electrical system is the important parameter influencing the characteristic of sag at the node where sensitive loads are connected. For sensitive loads it is necessary to estimate how many times in a year the voltage at their terminal will experience sag to avoid tripping of operation. In this paper the effect of transformer on stochastic estimation of …

Formation Control Of Nonholonomic Mobile Robots Using Implicit Polynomials And Elliptic Fourier Descriptors, Yeşi̇m Hümay Esi̇n, Mustafa Ünel
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
This paper presents a novel method for the formation control of a group of nonholonomic mobile robots using implicit and parametric descriptions of the desired formation shape. The formation control strategy employs implicit polynomial (IP) representations to generate potential fields for achieving the desired formation and the elliptical Fourier descriptors (EFD) to maintain the formation once achieved. Coordination of the robots is modeled by linear springs between each robot and its two nearest neighbors. Advantages of this new method are increased flexibility in the formation shape, scalability to different swarm sizes and easy implementation. The shape formation control is first …

Performance Tuning Of Streaming Applications Via Search-Space Decomposition, Shobana Padmanabhan, Roger D. Chamberlain, Yixin Chen
All Computer Science and Engineering Research
High-performance streaming applications are typically pipelined and deployed on architecturally diverse (hybrid)systems. Developers of such applications are interested in customizing components used, so as to benefit application performance. We present an efficient and automatic technique for design-space exploration of applications in this problem domain. We solve performance tuning as an optimization problem by formulating cost functions using results from queueing theory. This results in a mixed-integer nonlinear optimization problem which is NP-hard. We reduce the search complexity by decomposing the search space. We have developed a domain-specific decomposition technique using topological information of the application embodied in the queueing network …

Global Constructive Optimization Of Vascular Systems, Manfred Georg, Tobias Preusser, Horst K. Hahn
All Computer Science and Engineering Research
We present a framework for the construction of vascular systems based on optimality principles of theoretical physiology. Given the position and flow distribution of end points of a vascular system, we construct the topology and positions of internal nodes to complete the vascular system in a realistic manner. Optimization is driven by intravascular volume minimization with constraints derived from physiological principles. Direct optimization of a vascular system, including topological changes, is used instead of simulating vessel growth. A good initial topology is found by extracting key information from a previously optimized model with less detail. This technique is used iteratively …

Sorting As A Streaming Application Executing On Chip Multiprocessors, Roger D. Chamberlain, Greg A. Galloway, Mark A. Franklin
All Computer Science and Engineering Research
Expressing concurrency in applications has always been a difficult and error-prone endeavor, yet effective utilization of multi-core processors requires that the concurrency in applications be understood. One approach to the expression of concurrency is streaming, which has shown real promise as a safe and effective method for many application classes. Here, we express a classic problem, sorting, in the streaming paradigm and explore the implications of various algorithm and architectural design parameters on the performance of the application.

Priority Assignment For Real-Time Flows In Wirelesshart Sensor-Actuator Networks, Abusayeed Saifullah, You Chenyang, Yixin Chen
All Computer Science and Engineering Research
Recent years have witnessed the adoption of wireless sensor-actuator networks as a communication infrastructure for process control applications. An important enabling technology for industrial process control is WirelessHART, an open wireless sensor-actuator network standard specifically developed for process industries. A key challenge faced byWirelessHART networks is to meet the stringent real-time communication requirements imposed by feedback control systems in process industries. Fixed priority scheduling, a popular scheduling policy in real-time networks, has recently been shown to be an effective real-time transmission scheduling policy in WirelessHART networks. Priority assignment has a major impact on the schedulability of real-time flows in these …

End-To-End Delay Analysis For Fixed Priority Scheduling In Wirelesshart Networks, Abusayeed Saifullah, You Xu, Chenyang Lu, Yixin Chen
All Computer Science and Engineering Research
The WirelessHART standard has been specifically designed for real-time communication between sensor and actuator devices for industrial process monitoring and control. End-to-end communication delay analysis for WirelessHART networks is required for acceptance test of real-time data flows from sensors to actuators and for workload adjustment in response to network dynamics. In this paper, we map the scheduling of real-time periodic data flows in a WirelessHART network to real-time multiprocessor scheduling. We, then, exploit the response time analysis for multiprocessor scheduling and propose a novel method for the end-to-end delay analysis of the real-time flows that are scheduled using a fixed …

Biosequence similarity search is an important application in computational biology. Mercury BLASTN, an FPGA-based implementation of BLAST for DNA, is one of the alternatives for fast DNA sequence comparison. The re-design of BLAST into a streaming application combined with a high-throughput hardware pipeline have enabled Mercury BLAST to emerge as one of the fastest implementations of bio-sequence similarity search. This performance can be further enhanced by exploiting the data-level parallelism present within the application. Here we present a multiple FPGA-based Mercury BLASTN design in order to double the speed and throughput of DNA sequence computation. This paper describes a dual …
