Fusing Semantics, Observability, Reliability And Diversity Of Concept Detectors For Video Search, Xiao-Yong Wei, Chong-Wah Ngo Oct 2008

Fusing Semantics, Observability, Reliability And Diversity Of Concept Detectors For Video Search, Xiao-Yong Wei, Chong-Wah Ngo

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Effective utilization of semantic concept detectors for large-scale video search has recently become a topic of intensive studies. One of main challenges is the selection and fusion of appropriate detectors, which considers not only semantics but also the reliability of detectors, observability and diversity of detectors in target video domains. In this paper, we present a novel fusion technique which considers different aspects of detectors for query answering. In addition to utilizing detectors for bridging the semantic gap of user queries and multimedia data, we also address the issue of "observability gap" among detectors which could not be directly inferred …

Ontology-Based Visual Word Matching For Near-Duplicate Retrieval, Yu-Gang Jiang, Chong-Wah Ngo Oct 2008

Ontology-Based Visual Word Matching For Near-Duplicate Retrieval, Yu-Gang Jiang, Chong-Wah Ngo

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

This paper proposes a novel approach to exploit the ontological relationship of visual words by linguistic reasoning. A visual word ontology is constructed to facilitate the rigorous evaluation of linguistic similarity across visual words. The linguistic similarity measurement enables cross-bin matching of visual words, compromising the effectiveness and speed of conventional keypoint matching and bag-of-word approaches. A constraint EMD is proposed and experimented to efficiently match visual words. Empirical findings indicate that the proposed approach offers satisfactory performance to near-duplicate retrieval, while still enjoying the merit of speed efficiency compared with other techniques.

Modeling Video Hyperlinks With Hypergraph For Web Video Reranking, Hung-Khoon Tan, Chong-Wah Ngo, Xiao Wu Oct 2008

Modeling Video Hyperlinks With Hypergraph For Web Video Reranking, Hung-Khoon Tan, Chong-Wah Ngo, Xiao Wu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In this paper, we investigate a novel approach of exploiting visual-duplicates for web video reranking using hypergraph. Current graph-based reranking approaches consider mainly the pair-wise linking of keyframes and ignore reliability issues that are inherent in such representation. We exploit higher order relation to overcome the issues of missing links in visual-duplicate keyframes and in addition identify the latent relationships among keyframes. Based on hypergraph, we consider two groups of video threads: visual near-duplicate threads and story threads, to hyperlink web videos and describe the higher order information existing in video content. To facilitate reranking using random walk algorithm, the …

Canonical Correlation Feature Selection For Sensors With Overlapping Bands: Theory And Application, Biliana S. Paskaleva, Majeed M. Hayat, Zhipeng Wang, J. Scott Tyo, Sanjay Krishna Oct 2008

Canonical Correlation Feature Selection For Sensors With Overlapping Bands: Theory And Application, Biliana S. Paskaleva, Majeed M. Hayat, Zhipeng Wang, J. Scott Tyo, Sanjay Krishna

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

The main focus of this paper is a rigorous development and validation of a novel canonical correlation feature- selection (CCFS) algorithm that is particularly well suited for spectral sensors with overlapping and noisy bands. The proposed approach combines a generalized canonical correlation analysis framework and a minimum mean-square-error criterion for the selection of feature subspaces. The latter induces ranking of the best linear combinations of the noisy overlapping bands and, in doing so, guarantees a minimal generalized distance between the centers of classes and their respective reconstructions in the space spanned by sensor bands. To demonstrate the efficacy and the …

Modeling And Stability Analysis Of Nonlinear Sampled-Data Systems With Embedded Recovery Algorithms, Heber Herencia-Zapana Oct 2008

Modeling And Stability Analysis Of Nonlinear Sampled-Data Systems With Embedded Recovery Algorithms, Heber Herencia-Zapana

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Computer control systems for safety critical systems are designed to be fault tolerant and reliable, however, soft errors triggered by harsh environments can affect the performance of these control systems. The soft errors of interest which occur randomly, are nondestructive and introduce a failure that lasts a random duration. To minimize the effect of these errors, safety critical systems with error recovery mechanisms are being investigated. The main goals of this dissertation are to develop modeling and analysis tools for sampled-data control systems that are implemented with such error recovery mechanisms. First, the mathematical model and the well-posedness of the …

An Agent-Based Combat Simulation Framework In Support Of Effect-Based And Net-Centric Evaluation, Robert Joseph Bowen

Computational Modeling & Simulation Engineering Theses & Dissertations

The use of information technologies (IT) and information networks has proliferated in industry as a method to achieve competitive advantage. The U.S. Military and its allies, in recent years, have employed IT to improve the way they conduct operations, speed decision making, and increase the span of control of commanders. This has resulted in a fundamental shift in the way military commanders employ combat units today. These (Information Age) forces no longer have to be able to see each other or even communicate directly in order to synchronize maneuvers. Dispersion is now favored over mass, relying on the IT network …

Using Timed-Release Cryptography To Mitigate Preservation Risk Of Embargo Periods, Rabia Haq Oct 2008

Using Timed-Release Cryptography To Mitigate Preservation Risk Of Embargo Periods, Rabia Haq

Computer Science Theses & Dissertations

This research defines Time-Locked Embargo, a framework designed to mitigate the Preservation Risk Interval: the preservation risk associated with embargoed scholarly material. Due to temporary access restrictions, embargoed data cannot be distributed freely and thus preserved via data refreshing during the embargo time interval. A solution to mitigate the risk of data loss has been developed by suggesting a data dissemination framework that allows data refreshing of encrypted instances of embargoed content in an open, unrestricted scholarly community. This framework has been developed by exploiting implementations of existing technologies to"time-lock" data using Timed-Release Cryptology (TRC) so that it can be …

Response To Changes In Key Stimuli Through The Co-Evolution Of Sensor Morphology And Control, Gary Parker, Pramod J. Nathan Sep 2008

Response To Changes In Key Stimuli Through The Co-Evolution Of Sensor Morphology And Control, Gary Parker, Pramod J. Nathan

Computer Science Faculty Publications

Co-evolving a robot’s sensor morphology and control program increases the potential that it can effectively complete its tasks and provides a means for adapting to changes in the environment. In previous work, we presented a learning system where the angle, range, and type of sensors on a hexapod robot, along with the control program, were evolved. Although three sensor stimuli were detectable by the system, it used only two due to the relative importance of these two stimuli in completing the task. In the research presented in this paper, we used the same system, but reduced the availability of a …

Evolving Predator Control Programs For A Hexapod Robot Pursuing A Prey, Gary Parker, Basar Gulcu Sep 2008

Evolving Predator Control Programs For A Hexapod Robot Pursuing A Prey, Gary Parker, Basar Gulcu

Computer Science Faculty Publications

Control program learning systems for autonomous robots are important to assist in their development and to allow them to adapt to changes in their capabilities and/or the environment. A common method for learning in robotics is Evolutionary Computation (EC) and a good problem to demonstrate the effectiveness of a learning system is the predator/prey problem. In previous research, we used a Cyclic Genetic Algorithm (CGA), a form of EC, to evolve the control program for a predator robot with a simple sensor configuration of 4 binary sensors, which yielded 16 possible sensor states. In this paper, we present the use …

Computational Methods For Investment Portfolio: The Use Of Fuzzy Measures And Constraint Programming For Risk Management, Tanja Magoc, Francois Modave, Martine Ceberio, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

Computational intelligence techniques are very useful tools for solving problems that involve understanding, modeling, and analysis of large data sets. One of the numerous fields where computational intelligence has found an extremely important role is finance. More precisely, optimization issues of one's financial investments, to guarantee a given return, at a minimal risk, have been solved using intelligent techniques such as genetic algorithm, rule-based expert system, neural network, and support-vector machine. Even though these methods provide good and usually fast approximation of the best investment strategy, they suffer some common drawbacks including the neglect of the dependence among among criteria …

Trustmap: Towards Trust Recommendations For Maps, Paulo Pinheiro Da Silva, Nicholas Ricky Del Rio, Vladik Kreinovich, Alejandro Castaneda Sep 2008

Trustmap: Towards Trust Recommendations For Maps, Paulo Pinheiro Da Silva, Nicholas Ricky Del Rio, Vladik Kreinovich, Alejandro Castaneda

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

The web is a rich environment for exchanging spatial information. When spatial information is shared in the form of images, i.e., maps, these images almost never come with meta-information about how they were generated. This kind of meta-information is often called knowledge provenance. Access to knowledge provenance may facilitate users to make informed decisions about the quality of maps. In this paper, we propose TrustMap, a new approach for enhancing maps with trust recommendations. For a given map, TrustMap can generate recommendations from the knowledge provenance and a network of trust relations between sources of information used to derive the …

Maximum Entropy In Support Of Semantically Annotated Datasets, Paulo Pinheiro Da Silva, Vladik Kreinovich, Christian Servin Sep 2008

Maximum Entropy In Support Of Semantically Annotated Datasets, Paulo Pinheiro Da Silva, Vladik Kreinovich, Christian Servin

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

One of the important problems of semantic web is checking whether two datasets describe the same quantity. The existing solution to this problem is to use these datasets' ontologies to deduce that these datasets indeed represent the same quantity. However, even when ontologies seem to confirm the identify of the two corresponding quantities, it is still possible that in reality, we deal with somewhat different quantities. A natural way to check the identity is to compare the numerical values of the measurement results: if they are close (within measurement errors), then most probably we deal with the same quantity, else …

Additional Information About American And Arab Perceptions Of An Arabic Turn-Taking Cue, Nigel Ward, Yaffa Al Bayyari Sep 2008

Additional Information About American And Arab Perceptions Of An Arabic Turn-Taking Cue, Nigel Ward, Yaffa Al Bayyari

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

This technical report is a supplement to "American and Arab perceptions of an Arabic turn-taking cue", a paper submitted to the Journal of Cross-Cultural Psychology. It provides additional details, discussion, figures, tables, and references relating to the main finding, that English speakers tend to misinterpret the prosodic pattern used in Arabic to cue back-channel responses, perceiving it as an expression of negative affect. It also describes an experimental demonstration that being able to detect and respond to this prosodic pattern in dialog can increase native-speaker perceptions of the social effectiveness of learners.

Verified Methods For Computing Pareto Sets: General Algorithmic Analysis, Boglarka G.-Toth, Vladik Kreinovich Sep 2008

Verified Methods For Computing Pareto Sets: General Algorithmic Analysis, Boglarka G.-Toth, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

In many engineering problems, we face multi-objective optimization, with several objective functions f1,...,fn. We want to provide the user with the Pareto set -- set of all possible solutions x which cannot be improved in all categories (i.e., for which fj(x')>=f_j(x) for all j and fj(x')>fj(x) for some j is impossible). The user should be able to select an appropriate trade-off between, say, cost and durability. We extend the general results about the (verified) algorithmic computability of maxima locations to show that Pareto sets can also computed.

Global Verification And Analysis Of Network Access Control Configuration, Ehab Al-Shaer, Will Marrero, Adel El-Atawy, Khalid Elbadawi Sep 2008

Global Verification And Analysis Of Network Access Control Configuration, Ehab Al-Shaer, Will Marrero, Adel El-Atawy, Khalid Elbadawi

Technical Reports

Network devices such as routers, firewalls, IPSec gateways, and NAT are configured using access control lists. However, recent studies and ISP surveys show that the management of access control configurations is a highly complex and error prone task. Without automated global configuration management tools, unreachablility and insecurity problems due to the misconfiguration of network devices become an ever more likely.

In this report, we present a novel approach that models the global end-to-end behavior of access control devices in the network including routers, firewalls, NAT, IPSec gateways for unicast and multicast packets. Our model represents the network as a state …

Inhibition Of Linear Absorption In Opaque Materials Using Phase-Locked Harmonic Generation, Marco Centini, Vito Roppo, Eugenio Fazio, Federico Pettazzi, Concita Sibilia, Joseph W. Haus, John V. Foreman, Neset Akozbek, Mark J. Bloemer, Michael Scalora

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

We theoretically predict and experimentally demonstrate inhibition of linear absorption for phase and group velocity mismatched second- and third-harmonic generation in strongly absorbing materials, GaAs, in particular, at frequencies above the absorption edge.

A 100-fs pump pulse tuned to 1300 nm generates 650 and 435 nm second- and third-harmonic pulses that propagate across a 450−μm-thick GaAs substrate without being absorbed.

We attribute this to a phase-locking mechanism that causes the pump to trap the harmonics and to impress on them its dispersive properties.

Phylogenetic Reconstruction From Transpositions, Feng Yue, Meng Zhang, Jijun Tang Sep 2008

Phylogenetic Reconstruction From Transpositions, Feng Yue, Meng Zhang, Jijun Tang

Faculty Publications

Background
Because of the advent of high-throughput sequencing and the consequent reduction in the cost of sequencing, many organisms have been completely sequenced and most of their genes identified. It thus has become possible to represent whole genomes as ordered lists of gene identifiers and to study the rearrangement of these entities through computational means. As a result, genome rearrangement data has attracted increasing attentions from both biologists and computer scientists as a new type of data for phylogenetic analysis. The main events of genome rearrangements include inversions, transpositions and transversions. To date, GRAPPA and MGR are the most accurate …

The Arctic seafloor remains one of the last unexplored areas on Earth. Exploration of this unique environment using standard remotely operated oceanographic tools has been obstructed by the dense Arctic ice cover. In the summer of 2007 the Arctic Gakkel Vents Expedition (AGAVE) was conducted with the express intention of understanding aspects of the marine biology, chemistry and geology associated with hydrothermal venting on the section of the mid-ocean ridge known as the Gakkel Ridge. Unlike previous research expeditions to the Arctic the focus was on high resolution imaging and sampling of the deep seafloor. To accomplish our goals we …

Self-Encoded Spread Spectrum Synchronization And Cooperative Diversity, Kun Hua Aug 2008

Self-Encoded Spread Spectrum Synchronization And Cooperative Diversity, Kun Hua

Department of Computer Electronics and Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

This dissertation research concerns a novel self-encoded spread spectrum. It provides a feasible practical implementation for random spreading codes. The traditional transmit and receive PN code generators are not needed. Instead, the spreading codes are extracted from the user's information bits itself. Comparing to conventional CDMA, SESS completely abandons the use of pseudo-random spreading codes. The code variability doesn't depend on the spreading length like pseudo-random codes.

But because the self-encoded spreading sequence is random and time varying, data recovery requires that the despreading sequence be identical with the spreading sequence at the start of the transmission. Synchronization is one …

Towards A More Adequate Use Of Interval-Valued Fuzzy Techniques In Intelligent Control: A Fuzzy Analogue Of Unimodality, Van Nam Huynh, Vladik Kreinovich Aug 2008

Towards A More Adequate Use Of Interval-Valued Fuzzy Techniques In Intelligent Control: A Fuzzy Analogue Of Unimodality, Van Nam Huynh, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

It is known that interval-valued fuzzy sets provide a more adequate description of expert uncertainty than the more traditional "type-1" (number-valued) fuzzy techniques. In the current approaches for using interval-valued fuzzy techniques, it is usually assumed that all fuzzy sets m(x) from the interval [l(x),u(x)] are possible. In this paper, we show that it is reasonable to restrict ourselves only to fuzzy numbers m(x), i.e., "unimodal" fuzzy sets. We also describe feasible algorithms for implementing thus modified intelligent control.

Towards A Combination Of Interval And Ellipsoid Uncertainty, Vladik Kreinovich, Arnold Neumaier, Gang Xiang Aug 2008

Towards A Combination Of Interval And Ellipsoid Uncertainty, Vladik Kreinovich, Arnold Neumaier, Gang Xiang

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

In many real-life situations, we do not know the probability distribution of measurement errors but only upper bounds on these errors. In such situations, once we know the measurement results, we can only conclude that the actual (unknown) values of a quantity belongs to some interval. Based on this interval uncertainty, we want to find the range of possible values of a desired function of the uncertain quantities. In general, computing this range is an NP-hard problem, but in a linear approximation, valid for small uncertainties, there is a linear time algorithm for computing the range. In other situations, we …

Key Factors In Tag Recognition For Rfid System, Nachiketa Das Aug 2008

Key Factors In Tag Recognition For Rfid System, Nachiketa Das

Computer Science and Computer Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses

The research effort described here was a study of factors that affect the efficiency of a Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) system in reading a certain type of commonly used passive RFID tag ('Squiggle' by Alien Technologies). The two sets of experiments conducted under this study focus on two response variables namely: readability and read rate. The factors in focus are distance between antenna and tags, the number and combinations of tags simultaneously read by the system and position of the tags left or right of the center of the antenna. Two separate experimental setups as explained in the following sections …

CGU Faculty Publications and Research

As XML becomes a standard for communications between distributed heterogeneous machines, many schools plan to implement Web Services systems using the XML e-transcript (electronic transcript) standard. We propose a framework that supports both XML e-transcript Web Services and existing EDI e-transcript systems. The framework uses the workflow engine to exploit the benefits of workflow management mechanisms. The workflow engine manages the e-transcript business process by enacting and completing the tasks and sub-processes within the main business process. We implemented the proposed framework by using various open source projects including Java, Eclipse, and Apache Software Foundation’s Web Services projects. Compared with …
