Design And Resource Management Of Reconfigurable Multiprocessors For Data-Parallel Applications, Xiaofang Wang Jan 2006

Design And Resource Management Of Reconfigurable Multiprocessors For Data-Parallel Applications, Xiaofang Wang

Dissertations

FPGA (Field-Programmable Gate Array)-based custom reconfigurable computing machines have established themselves as low-cost and low-risk alternatives to ASIC (Application-Specific Integrated Circuit) implementations and general-purpose microprocessors in accelerating a wide range of computation-intensive applications. Most often they are Application Specific Programmable Circuiits (ASPCs), which are developer programmable instead of user programmable. The major disadvantages of ASPCs are minimal programmability, and significant time and energy overheads caused by required hardware reconfiguration when the problem size outnumbers the available reconfigurable resources; these problems are expected to become more serious with increases in the FPGA chip size. On the other hand, dominant high-performance computing …

Hfo2 As Gate Dielectric On Si And Ge Substrate, Reenu Garg Jan 2006

Hfo2 As Gate Dielectric On Si And Ge Substrate, Reenu Garg

Dissertations

Hafnium oxide HfO2 has been considered as an alternative to silicon dioxide SiO2 in future nano-scale complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) devices since it provides the required capacitance at the reduced device size because of its high dielectric constant. HfO2 films are currently deposited by various techniques. Many of them require high temperature annealing that can impact device performance and reliability.

In this research, electrical characteristics of capacitors with HfO2 as gate dielectric deposited by standard thermal evaporation and e-beam evaporation on Si and Ge substrates were investigated. The dielectric constant of HfO2 deposited by thermal evaporation …

Online Clustering With Single-Pass Topology Based Fuzzy Clustering Algorithm, Abhishek Jaiantilal Jan 2006

Online Clustering With Single-Pass Topology Based Fuzzy Clustering Algorithm, Abhishek Jaiantilal

Theses

Online clustering is of significant interest for real-time data analysis. Generic offline clustering methods such as K-Means, C-Means and others are computationally expensive. The computational burden of these methods increases non-linearly with the size of the data set. In addition these methods usually require a good amount of supervised knowledge yielding a non-unique solution. For real-time data analysis, there is an important tradeoff between accuracy and computational efficiency. An unsupervised one-pass clustering method that efficiently adapts to data distribution and evaluation is proposed. This method, Topology-Based Fuzzy Clustering (TFC), uses the topology of data to discover clusters. TFC uses the …

The Utep Corpus Of Iraqi Arabic, Nigel Ward, David G. Novick, Salamah I. Salamah

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

The rules governing turn-taking phenomena are not well understood in general and almost completely undocumented for Arabic. As the first step to modeling these phenomena, we have collected a small corpus of Iraqi Arabic spoken dialogs. The corpus is in three parts. Part A is 110 minutes of unstructured conversations. Parts B1 and B2 are 176 minutes of direction-giving dialogs, most including a greeting phase, a smalltalk phase, a request phase, and a direction-giving phase. Parts A and B1 were recorded with 13 native speakers of Iraqi Arabic, interacting in pairs. In Part B2 the direction-getter is an American with …

Mimo Communications In Ad Hoc Networks, Biao Chen, Michael J. Gans Jan 2006

Mimo Communications In Ad Hoc Networks, Biao Chen, Michael J. Gans

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science - All Scholarship

We study in this paper the network spectral efficiency in terms of bits/s/Hz of a MIMO (multiple-input multiple output) ad hoc network with K simultaneous communicating transmitter-receiver pairs. Assume that each transmitter is equipped with t antennas and each receiver implements single user detection. We show that in the absence of channel state information (CSI) at the transmitters, the asymptotic network spectral efficiency is limited by r nats/s/Hz as K -> ∞ and is independent of t and the transmit power. With CSI corresponding to the desired receiver available at the transmitter, we demonstrate that the asymptotic spectral efficiency is …

Computational Modeling & Simulation Engineering Faculty Publications

The Levels of Conceptual Interoperability Model (LCIM) was developed to cope with the different layers of interoperation of modeling & simulation applications. It introduced technical, syntactic, semantic, pragmatic, dynamic, and conceptual layers of interoperation and showed how they are related to the ideas of integratability, interoperability, and composability. This paper will be presented in the invited session "Ontology Driven Interoperability for Agile Applications using Information Systems: Requirements and Applications for Agent Mediated Decision Support" at WMSCI 2006.

Modeling Correlation And Dependence Among Intervals, Scott Ferson, Vladik Kreinovich Jan 2006

Modeling Correlation And Dependence Among Intervals, Scott Ferson, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

This note introduces the notion of dependence among intervals to account for observed or theoretical constraints on the relationships among uncertain inputs in mathematical calculations. We define dependence as any restriction on the possible pairings of values within respective intervals and define nondependence as the degenerate case of no restrictions (which we carefully distinguish from independence in probability theory). Traditional interval calculations assume nondependence, but alternative assumptions are possible, including several which might be practical in engineering settings that would lead to tighter enclosures on arithmetic functions of intervals. We give best possible formulas for addition of intervals under several …

Interval-Based Robust Statistical Techniques For Non-Negative Convex Functions With Application To Timing Analysis Of Computer Chips, Michael Orshansky, Wei-Shen Wang, Gang Xiang, Vladik Kreinovich Jan 2006

Interval-Based Robust Statistical Techniques For Non-Negative Convex Functions With Application To Timing Analysis Of Computer Chips, Michael Orshansky, Wei-Shen Wang, Gang Xiang, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

In chip design, one of the main objectives is to decrease its clock cycle; however, the existing approaches to timing analysis under uncertainty are based on fundamentally restrictive assumptions. Statistical timing analysis techniques assume that the full probabilistic distribution of timing uncertainty is available; in reality, the complete probabilistic distribution information is often unavailable. Additionally, the existing alternative of treating uncertainty as interval-based, or affine, is limited since it cannot handle probabilistic information in principle. In this paper, a fundamentally new paradigm for timing uncertainty description is proposed as a way to consistently and rigorously handle partially available descriptions of …

On The Functional Form Of Convex Underestimators For Twice Continuously Differentiable Functions, Chirstodoulos A. Floudas, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

The optimal functional form of convex underestimators for general twice continuously differentiable functions is of major importance in deterministic global optimization. In this paper, we provide new theoretical results that address the classes of optimal functional forms for the convex underestimators. These are derived based on the properties of shift-invariance and sign-invariance.

Swarm Intelligence: Theoretical Proof That Empirical Techniques Are Optimal, Dmitry Iourinskiy, Scott A. Starks, Vladik Kreinovich, Stephen F. Smith

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

A natural way to distribute tasks between autonomous agents is to use swarm intelligence techniques, which simulate the way social insects (such as wasps) distribute tasks between themselves. In this paper, we theoretically prove that the corresponding successful biologically inspired formulas are indeed statistically optimal (in some reasonable sense).

Complex Orthogonal Spreading Sequences Using Mutually Orthagonal Complimentary Sets, Ying Zhao, Jennifer Seberry, Beata J. Wysocki, Tadeusz Wysocki Jan 2006

Complex Orthogonal Spreading Sequences Using Mutually Orthagonal Complimentary Sets, Ying Zhao, Jennifer Seberry, Beata J. Wysocki, Tadeusz Wysocki

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications (to 2015)

This paper presents a new family of complex spreading sequences designed using mutually orthogonal(MO) complementary sets. Based on the technique described in this paper, the correlation properties of sets of sequences are compared to well-known Walsh-Hadamard sequence sets. Further improvement of correlation qualities can be achieved by employing a diagonal modification method. We also present simulation results of an asynchronous multiuser CDMA system using the modified sequences.

Scarcely Populated Uwb-Ir Systems With Interleaved Coding-Modulation On Multipath Fading Channels, Michal M. Pietrzyk, Keni Popovski, Tadeusz Wysocki, Beata J. Wysocki, Jos H. Weber Jan 2006

Scarcely Populated Uwb-Ir Systems With Interleaved Coding-Modulation On Multipath Fading Channels, Michal M. Pietrzyk, Keni Popovski, Tadeusz Wysocki, Beata J. Wysocki, Jos H. Weber

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications (to 2015)

Interleaved coding-modulation (ICM) is a recently proposed method for ultra-wideband impulse radio (UWBIR) systems. ICM exploits the concept of chip interleaving, allowing to alleviate the problem of inter-symbol and inter-pulse interference commonly present in high data rate UWB-IR systems. In this paper, previous work on ICM is extended to scarcely populated multi-user scenarios. A novel design of a deterministic chip interleaver based on time-hopping hyperbolic congruence sequences is proposed. Furthermore, the main parameters of the random and hyperbolic interleavers are reviewed. The obtained results indicate that the proposed type of interleaver yields similar performance to random interleavers but with the …

Performance Comparison Ofuwb Hopping Codes In A Multi-User Rich Scattering Environment, K. Popovski, B. J. Wysocki, Tadeusz Wysocki

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications (to 2015)

Ultra Wideband is a short-range wireless communication technique which has seen increased interest over the past decade. Having several methods of implementation, a key issue will always be the avoidance of multi-user interference. For time-hopped Ultra Wideband, this is achieved through the use of different codes assigned to each user, performing time-hopped code division multiple access.
This paper presents a performance comparison of several time hopping sequence construction methods. It presents correlation results between sequences, and simulation results in a Gaussian noise degraded, scattering rich multi-user environment. Simulations are based on the IEEE channel model for UWB communications.

Towards Optimal Techniques For Solving Global Optimization Problems: Symmetry-Based Approach, Chirstodoulos A. Floudas, Vladik Kreinovich Jan 2006

Towards Optimal Techniques For Solving Global Optimization Problems: Symmetry-Based Approach, Chirstodoulos A. Floudas, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

Most techniques for solving global optimization problems have parameters that need to be adjusted to the problem or to the class of problems: for example, in gradient methods, we can select different step sizes. When we have a single parameter (or few parameters) to choose, it is possible to empirically try many values and come up with an (almost) optimal value. Thus, in such situations, we can come up with optimal version of the corresponding technique.

In other approaches, e.g., in methods like convex underestimators, instead of selecting the value of single number-valued parameter, we have select the auxiliary function. …

A Tabu Search Algorithm To Minimize The Makespan For The Unrelated Parallel Machines Scheduling Problem With Setup Times, Magdy Helal, Ghaith Rabadi, Ameer Al-Salem Jan 2006

A Tabu Search Algorithm To Minimize The Makespan For The Unrelated Parallel Machines Scheduling Problem With Setup Times, Magdy Helal, Ghaith Rabadi, Ameer Al-Salem

Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Faculty Publications

In this paper we propose a tabu search implementation to solve the unrelated parallel machines scheduling problem with sequence- and machine- dependent setup times to minimize the schedules makespan. The problem is NP-hard and finding an optimal solution efficiently is unlikely. Therefore, heuristic techniques are more appropriate to find near-optimal solutions. The proposed tabu search algorithm uses two phases of perturbation schemes: the intra-machine perturbation, which optimizes the sequence of jobs on the machines, and the inter-machine perturbation, which balances the assignment of the jobs to the machines. We compare the proposed algorithm to an existing one that addressed the …

Analysis Of Complexity And Coupling Metrics Of Subsystems In Large Scale Software Systems, Harish Ramakrishnan Jan 2006

Analysis Of Complexity And Coupling Metrics Of Subsystems In Large Scale Software Systems, Harish Ramakrishnan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Dealing with the complexity of large-scale systems can be a challenge for even the most experienced software architects and developers. Large-scale software systems can contain millions of elements, which interact to achieve the system functionality. Managing and representing the complexity involved in the interaction of these elements is a difficult task. We propose an approach for analyzing the reusability, maintainability and complexity of such a complex large-scale software system. Reducing the dependencies between the subsystems increase the reusability and decrease the efforts needed to maintain the system thus reducing the complexity of the system. Coupling is an attribute that summarizes …

An Authentic Ecg Simulator, Paul Michalek Jan 2006

An Authentic Ecg Simulator, Paul Michalek

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

An ECG (electrocardiogram) simulator is an electronic tool that plays an essential role in the testing, design, and development of ECG monitors and other ECG equipment. Principally an ECG simulator provides ECG monitors with an electrical signal that emulates the human heart's electrical signal so that the monitor can be tested for reliability and important diagnostic capabilities. However, the current portable commercially available ECG simulators are lacking in their ability to fully test ECG monitors. Specifically, the portable simulators presently on the market do not produce authentic ECG signals but rather they endeavor to create the ECG signals mathematically. They …

Characterization Of Critical Network Components Of Coupled Oscillators, Gregory Holifield Jan 2006

Characterization Of Critical Network Components Of Coupled Oscillators, Gregory Holifield

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation analyzes the fundamental limits for the determination of the network structure of loosely coupled oscillators based on observing the behavior of the network, specifically, node synchronization. The determination of the requisite characteristics and underlying behaviors necessary for the application of a theoretical mechanism for determining the underlying network topology in a network of loosely coupled natural oscillators are the desired outcome. To that end, this effort defines an analytical framework where key components of networks of coupled oscillators are isolated in order to determine the relationships between the various components. The relationship between the number of nodes in …

A Performance Comparison Of Clustering Algorithms In Ad Hocnetworks, Chun Yeung Jan 2006

A Performance Comparison Of Clustering Algorithms In Ad Hocnetworks, Chun Yeung

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

An ad hoc network is comprised of wireless mobile nodes without the need of wired network infrastructure. Due to the limited transmission range of nodes, the exchange of data between them may not be possible using direct communication. Partitioning the network into clusters and electing a clusterhead for each cluster to assist with the resource allocation and data packet transmissions among its members and neighboring clusterheads is one of the most common ways of providing support for the existing ad hoc routing protocols. This thesis presents the performance comparison of four ad hoc network clustering protocols: Dynamic Mobile Adaptive Clustering …

Design Of Survivable Wdm Network Based On Pre-Configured Protection Cycle, Byungkyu Kang Jan 2006

Design Of Survivable Wdm Network Based On Pre-Configured Protection Cycle, Byungkyu Kang

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) is an important technique which allows the trans- port of large quantities of data over optical networks. All optical WDM-based networks have been used to improve overall communication capacity and provide an excellent choice for the design of backbone networks. However, due to the high traffic load that each link can carry in a WDM network, survivability against failures becomes very important. Survivability in this context is the ability of the network to maintain continuity of service against failures, since a failure can lead to huge data losses. In recent years, many survivability mechanisms have been …

Pocket Deformable Mirror For Adaptive Optics Applications, Leonid A. Beresnev, Mikhail Vorontsov, Peter Wangsness Jan 2006

Pocket Deformable Mirror For Adaptive Optics Applications, Leonid A. Beresnev, Mikhail Vorontsov, Peter Wangsness

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Adaptive/active optical elements are designed to improve optical system performance in the presence of phase aberrations. For atmospheric optics and astronomical applications, an ideal deformable mirror should have sufficient frequency bandwidth for compensation of fast changing wave front aberrations induced by either atmospheric turbulences or by turbulent air flows surrounding a flying object (air optical effects). In many applications, such as atmospheric target tracking, remote sensing from flying aircraft, boundary layer imaging, laser communication and laser beam projection over near horizontal propagation paths the phase aberration frequency bandwidth can exceed several kHz. These fast-changing aberrations are currently compensated using relatively …

Adaptive Beam Director For A Tiled Fiber Array, Mikhail Vorontsov, Jim F. Riker, Ernst Polnau, Svetlana Lachinova, Venkata S. Rao Gudimetla

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

We present the concept development of a novel atmospheric compensation system based on adaptive tiled fiber array architecture operating with target-in-the-loop scenarios for directed beam applications. The adaptive tiled fiber array system is integrated with adaptive beam director (ABD). Wavefront control and sensing functions are performed directly on the beam director telescope primary mirror. The beam control of the adaptive tiled fiber array aims to compensate atmospheric turbulence-induced dynamic phase aberrations and results in a corresponding brightness increase on the illuminated extended object. The system is specifically designed for tiled fiber system architectures operating in strong intensity scintillation and speckle-modulation …
