Creating A Video Device Application, Kevin Septor Jan 2004

Creating A Video Device Application, Kevin Septor

Honors Theses

A video device, such as a webcam, has the capability to be used in many ways, including recording video and behaving like a security camera. A TV tuner card can also record video, and in addition be used for watching television. However, the video hardware and device driver the operating system uses to access it are only capable of delivering raw frames of video. A user space application is necessary for exploiting the capabilities of such a device beyond reading sequential frames of video. This research explores the desiderata in a powerful video device application, and introduces a program that …

Attack-Resistant Location Estimation In Wireless Sensor Networks, Dongdang Liu, Peng Ning, An Liu, Cliff Wang, Wenliang Kevin Du Jan 2004

Attack-Resistant Location Estimation In Wireless Sensor Networks, Dongdang Liu, Peng Ning, An Liu, Cliff Wang, Wenliang Kevin Du

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science - All Scholarship

Many sensor network applications require sensors’ locations to function correctly. Despite the recent advances, location discovery for sensor networks in hostile environments has been mostly overlooked. Most of the existing localization protocols for sensor networks are vulnerable in hostile environments. The security of location discovery can certainly be enhanced by authentication. However, the possible node compromises and the fact that location determination uses certain physical features (e.g., received signal strength) of radio signals make authentication not as effective as in traditional security applications. This paper presents two methods to tolerate malicious attacks against range-based location discovery in sensor networks. The …

Data Bandwidth Reduction Techniques For Distributed Embedded Simulatio, Hubert Bahr Jan 2004

Data Bandwidth Reduction Techniques For Distributed Embedded Simulatio, Hubert Bahr

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Maintaining coherence between the independent views of multiple participants at distributed locations is essential in an Embedded Simulation environment. Currently, the Distributed Interactive Simulation (DIS) protocol maintains coherence by broadcasting the entity state streams from each simulation station. In this dissertation, a novel alternative to DIS that replaces the transmitting sources with local sources is developed, validated, and assessed by analytical and experimental means. The proposed Concurrent Model approach reduces the communication burden to transmission of only synchronization and model-update messages. Necessary and sufficient conditions for the correctness of Concurrent Models in a discrete event simulation environment are established by …

Development Of A Low Jitter Multiplying Delay Locked Loop, Ian Kennedy Jan 2004

Development Of A Low Jitter Multiplying Delay Locked Loop, Ian Kennedy

Theses

The clock generator is a critical component in high-speed wireline communication systems. The clocks in these systems mark time at precise regular intervals. Any deviation of the clock edges from these ideal time points is called jitter and it degrades the overall integrity of the communication system. This thesis looks at both phase locked loops (PLLs) and delay locked loops (DLLs) and their ability to provide these precise clocks. Expressions for the thermal noise-induced jitter in both the PLL and DLL are compared. From this, the DLL is shown to possess the potential for better jitter performance. However, to realise …

A Service-Based Architecture For Learning Management Systems Which Supports Personalisation And Collaboration, Markus Schmid Jan 2004

A Service-Based Architecture For Learning Management Systems Which Supports Personalisation And Collaboration, Markus Schmid

Theses

This work develops a service-based architecture for an extensible and customisable learning management system (LMS) runtime environment. The architecture mainly defines interfaces for the interaction of functional system components represented by loosely coupled distributed services. Services that represent functional components of the distributed LMS are called e-leaming services. In addition, underlying infrastructure services provide supportive functionality such as service-lookup within an institution. Users access the system using an LMS portal component that acts as a front-end for the LMS services.

While existing e-leaming environments provide a relatively good coverage of most of the functional requirements defined in this work, they …

Bidirectional Lao* Algorithm (A Faster Approach To Solve Goal-Directed Mdps), Venkata Deepti Kiran Bhuma Jan 2004

Bidirectional Lao* Algorithm (A Faster Approach To Solve Goal-Directed Mdps), Venkata Deepti Kiran Bhuma

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

Uncertainty is a feature of many AI applications. While there are polynomial-time algorithms for planning in stochastic systems, planning is still slow, in part because most algorithms plan for all eventualities. Algorithms such as LAO* are able to find good or optimal policies more quickly when the starting state of the system is known.

In this thesis we present an extension to LAO*, called BLAO*. BLAO* is an extension of the LAO* algorithm to a bidirectional search. We show that BLAO* finds optimal or E-optimal solutions for goal-directed MDPs without necessarily evaluating the entire state space. BLAO* …

The purpose of this project is to provide an easy to manufacture solution to sampling material from dry bulk tankers. A device was developed using basic design requirements. Once a design was created a CAD design was drawn to illustrate and prototype the device. This prototype was placed under rigorous testing to determine effectiveness. The end result provides a dry bulk sampling device for plant workers and/or truck drivers to sample the material in their tankers and send to the laboratory when unloading at a facility.

Software Quality Revisited, Ronan Fitzpatrick Jan 2004

Software Quality Revisited, Ronan Fitzpatrick

Conference papers

Definitions of software quality have focused on software product quality factors. Quality that focuses on product quality is referred to by Kaoru Ishikawa as a narrow view of quality and he suggests that a broader more embracing and inclusive view is really necessary. The requirements of successful E-Commerce Web sites demonstrate this view. While the site might be considered as the product, Web site producers, owners and visitors also have a “quality” requirement. This broader view gives rises to the need to research and understand quality-of-development, quality-of-ownership, quality-of-engagement as well as quality-of-product. From the quality-of-product perspective, while many of the …

Software Quality Challenges., Ronan Fitzpatrick, Peter Smith, Brendan O'Shea

Conference papers

This paper sets out a number of challenges facing the software quality community. These challenges relate to the broader view of quality and the consequences for software quality definitions. These definitions are related to eight perspectives of software quality in an end-to-end product life cycle. Research and study of software quality has traditionally focused on product quality for management information systems and this paper considers the challenge of defining additional quality factors for alternative domains like the World Wide Web.

Address Assignment In Ad-Hoc Networks, John Paul O'Grady Jan 2004

Address Assignment In Ad-Hoc Networks, John Paul O'Grady

Theses

A wireless ad-hoc network is a collection of autonomous nodes or terminals that communicate with each other by forming a multi-hop radio network and maintaining connectivity in a decentralised manner. In an ad hoc network routing is used to find and maintain a path through the network. Routing requires each node to have a unique identifier, to ensure that packets sent to a particular node reach their intended destination. Most ad-hoc routing protocols assume that a node already has an address prior to its entry into a network and so the issue of address assignment is largely ignored. This however …

Multi-Modulation Schemes To Increase The Rate Of Space-Time Block Codes In Rayleigh Fading Channels, Le Chung Tran, Tadeusz A. Wysocki, Jennifer Seberry, Alfred Mertins

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications (to 2015)

he paper examines multi-modulation schemes (MMSs) to increase the rate of our two new Complex Orthogonal Designs (CODS) proposed for eight transmit antennas, namely C1 and C2, corresponding to the Amicable Orthogonal Designs (AODs) (~l,l,Z,Z:l,l,Z~) and (8:1,1,1,~1,1,1,4), respectively. In addition, the optimal inter-symbol power allocation in the proposed codes in single modulation as well BS in MMSs in flat Rayleigh fading channels is considered. It turns out that, in some modulation schemes, equal power transmission pure each symbol time slot is not only optimal from the technical point of view, but also optimal in terms of achieving …

Interaction Effects Of Slurry Chemistry On Chemical Mechanical Planarization Of Electroplated Copper, Peter A. Miranda, Jerome A. Imonigie, Amy J. Moll Jan 2004

Interaction Effects Of Slurry Chemistry On Chemical Mechanical Planarization Of Electroplated Copper, Peter A. Miranda, Jerome A. Imonigie, Amy J. Moll

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Recent studies have been conducted investigating the effects of slurry chemistry on the copper CMP process. Slurry pH and hydrogen peroxide concentration are two important variables that must be carefully formulated in order to achieve desired removal rates and uniformity. In applications such as throughwafer vertical interconnects, slurry chemistry effects must be thoroughly understood when copper plating thicknesses can measure up to 20 microns thick. The species of copper present on the surface of the wafer can be controlled through formulation of the slurry chemistry resulting in minimizing non-uniformity while aggressively removing copper. Using a design of experiments (DOE) approach, …

Design And Evaluation Of Processes For Fuel Fabrication, Georg F. Mauer Jan 2004

Design And Evaluation Of Processes For Fuel Fabrication, Georg F. Mauer

Fuels Campaign (TRP)

The goal of this research project is to provide technical support to process designers working on the development of the fuel cycles for transmutation applications. Detailed process models are developed to better define the impact of fuel choice on the transmuter fuel cycle, including relative process losses, waste generation, and plant capital cost. These process models provide insight regarding required plant size and number of plants needed to mesh with the fuel recycling line. They also determine requirements for automation.

Manufacturing models for large-scale production in a hot cell environment are also developed. Combined, these two models allow the assessment …

An Approach For Computing Intervisibility Using Graphical Processing U, Judd Tracy Jan 2004

An Approach For Computing Intervisibility Using Graphical Processing U, Judd Tracy

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In large scale entity-level military force-on-force simulations it is essential to know when one entity can visibly see another entity. This visibility determination plays an important role in the simulation and can affect the outcome of the simulation. When virtual Computer Generated Forces (CGF) are introduced into the simulation these intervisibilities must now be calculated by the virtual entities on the battlefield. But as the simulation size increases so does the complexity of calculating visibility between entities. This thesis presents an algorithm for performing these visibility calculations using Graphical Processing Units (GPU) instead of the Central Processing Units (CPU) that …

Algebraic Semantics For Coalgebraic Logics, Clemens Kupke, Alexander Kurz, Dirk Pattinson Jan 2004

Algebraic Semantics For Coalgebraic Logics, Clemens Kupke, Alexander Kurz, Dirk Pattinson

Engineering Faculty Articles and Research

With coalgebras usually being defined in terms of an endofunctor T on sets, this paper shows that modal logics for T-coalgebras can be naturally described as functors L on boolean algebras. Building on this idea, we study soundness, completeness and expressiveness of coalgebraic logics from the perspective of duality theory. That is, given a logic L for coalgebras of an endofunctor T, we construct an endofunctor L such that L-algebras provide a sound and complete (algebraic) semantics of the logic. We show that if L is dual to T, then soundness and completeness of the algebraic semantics immediately yield the …

A New Look At The Multiclass Network Equilibrium Problem, Patrice Marcotte, Laura Wynter Jan 2004

A New Look At The Multiclass Network Equilibrium Problem, Patrice Marcotte, Laura Wynter

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The multiclass network equilibrium problem is expressed in general as a nonmonotone, asymmetric, variational inequality problem. We show that in spite of the nonmonotonicity of the cost operator, the problem may actually satisfy a weaker property, induced by the hierarchical nature of the travel cost interactions. This property allows a natural decomposition approach, not otherwise available, that admits provably convergent algorithms. We present one such algorithm, easily implementable using a solver for the single-class network equilibrium problem, together with a convergence proof.

An Implicit Surface Modeling Technique Based On A Modular Neural Network Architecture, Manuel Carcenac Jan 2004

An Implicit Surface Modeling Technique Based On A Modular Neural Network Architecture, Manuel Carcenac

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Independently from artificial intelligence applications, an artificial neural network can be viewed as a powerful tool for function reconstruction. Previous papers used this property to model an implicit surface out of some control points by reconstructing its underlying scalar field. Such an approach requests the neural network to memorize the control points, which has turned problematic for complex surfaces. In our paper, we show that this problem can be efficiently tackled by adapting the architecture of the neural network to the features compounding the surface: by learning first these features independently and then blending them gradually together, our modular architecture …

Mining Classification Rules By Using Genetic Algorithms With Non-Random Initial Population And Uniform Operator, Korkut Koray Gündoğan, Bi̇lal Alataş, Ali̇ Karci Jan 2004

Mining Classification Rules By Using Genetic Algorithms With Non-Random Initial Population And Uniform Operator, Korkut Koray Gündoğan, Bi̇lal Alataş, Ali̇ Karci

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Classification is a supervised learning method that induces a classification model from a database and is one of the most commonly applied data mining task. The frequently employed techniques are decision tree or neural network-based classification algorithms. This work presents an efficient genetic algorithm (GA) for classification rule mining technique that discovers comprehensible IF-THEN rules using a generalized uniform population method and a uniform operator inspired from the uniform population method. Initial population is generated by methodically eliminating the randomness by generalized uniform population method. In the subsequence generations, genetic diversity is ensured and premature convergence is prevented by the …

Real-Time Classification Algorithm For Recognition Of Machine Operating Modes By Use Of Self-Organizing Maps, Gancho Vachkov, Yuhiko Kiyota, Koji Komatsu, Satoshi Fujii Jan 2004

Real-Time Classification Algorithm For Recognition Of Machine Operating Modes By Use Of Self-Organizing Maps, Gancho Vachkov, Yuhiko Kiyota, Koji Komatsu, Satoshi Fujii

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In this paper a new algorithm for classification and real-time recognition of different a-priorily assumed operating modes for construction machines is proposed. This algorithm utilizes the effectiveness of the Self-Organizing Maps (SOM) for creating the so called Separation Models, that are able to distinguish each operating mode separately. After training, these models are used in a real-time procedure, which calculates at each sampling time the minimal Euclidean distances from the current data point to a certain node of each SOM. Then the separation model (represented by a respective SOM) that has the least minimal distance to this data point defines …
