Logical inference starts with concluding that if B implies A, and B is true, then A is true as well. To describe probabilistic inference rules, we must therefore define the probability of an implication "A if B". There exist two different approaches to defining this probability, and these approaches lead to different probabilistic inference rules: We may interpret the probability of an implication as the conditional probability P(A|B), in which case we get Bayesian inference. Traditionally, most planning research in AI was concentrated on systems whose state can be characterized by discrete-valued fluents. In many practical applications, however, we want to control systems (like robots) whose state can only be described if we used continuous variables (like coordinates). Planning for such systems corresponds, crudely speaking, to Level 2 of the planing language PDDL2.1. In this paper, we analyze the computational complexity of such planning problems.

This project was started with JDK Version 1.0 and was later upgraded to version JDK Version 1.2.2, to create a graphical user interface using the Abstract Window Toolkit (AWT) to a HyperCard bibliography of software engineering. The bibliographic index tool is designed to facilitate searching for text and is run as a Java applet. It presents an alphabetically ordered list of author names and subjects. With the bibliography index tool one can manipulate a bibliographic list directly over the World Wide Web on a computer that lists electronic bibliographies.

The project, Spider III, presents architecture and protocol of a multi-agent-based internet distributed computing system, which provides a convenient development and execution environment for transparent task distribution, load balancing, and fault tolerance. Spider is an on going distribution computing project in the Department of Computer Science, California State University San Bernardino. It was first proposed as an object-oriented distributed system by Han-Sheng Yuh in his master's thesis in 1997. It has been further developed by Koping Wang in his master's project, of where he made large contribution and implemented the Spider II System.

The available range resolution of pulsed radar wind profilers is usually limited by bandwidth restrictions. Range imaging (RIM) has recently been developed as a means of mitigating these limitations by operating the wind profilers over a small set of distinct transmitter frequencies. A constrained optimization method can then be used to generate high-resolution maps of the reflectivity field as a function of range. This paper presents a description of how the RIM technique has been recently implemented on the Platteville 915-MHz tropospheric profiler, the first such implementation at UHF. For large aerospace structures, it is extremely important to detect faults, and non-destructive testing is the only practical way to do it. Based on measurements of ultrasonic waves, Eddy currents, magnetic resonance, etc., we reconstruct the locations of the faults. The best (most efficient) known statistical methods for fault reconstruction are not perfect. We show that the use of expert knowledge-based granulation improves the quality of fault reconstruction.

Uncertainty is very important in risk analysis. A natural way to describe this uncertainty is to describe a set of possible values of each unknown quantity (this set is usually an interval), plus any additional information that we may have about the probability of different values within this set. A natural way to test the structural integrity of a pavement is to send signals with different frequencies through the pavement and compare the results with the signals passing through an ideal pavement. For this comparison, we must determine how, for the corresponding mixture, the elasticity E depends on the frequency f in the range from 0.1 to 10^5 Hz. It is very expensive to perform measurements in high frequency area (above 20 Hz). This paper describes the implementation of a prototype text editor that incorporates conversation-like features through the direct-manipulation modality. In this way, traditional direct-manipulation interaction techniques such as direct reference via pointing can be extended to include techniques more commonly associated with human conversation, such as negotiation of reference. The paper illustrates the use of the prototype with an extended example, and discusses research issues raised by the implementation.

Polycrystalline Si films, 0.5-mm thick, were obtained as a result of metal-induced growth by sputtering from a Si target on 25 nm thick Ni prelayers at 525 °C. Silicon grew heteroepitaxially on the NiSi2 layer formed due to the reaction between the sputtered Si atoms and Ni. Schottky diodes were fabricated on the Si films by deposition of a Schottky metal on the front surface of the film while Ni disilicide provided an intimate ohmic contact at the back. A Pd/n-Si diode using an n-Si film annealed for 2 h at 700 °C in forming gas demonstrated a rectification ratio …

Numerical simulation in cellular phone - human tissue interaction is discussed in this paper. The powerful time domain (TD) techniques, the transmission line matrix (TLM) and the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) methods, are used to model mutual effects. The purpose is to calculate specific absorption rate (SAR; defined as the power absorbed by the unit mass of the tissue), validate the codes and verify the results. Also, effectiveness of the SAR parameter in determination of the exposure limits for human health and environmental pollution is discussed.

This paper studies coalgebras from the perspective of the finitary observations that can be made of their behaviours. Based on the terminal sequence, notions of finitary behaviours and finitary predicates are introduced. A category Behω(T) of coalgebras with morphisms preserving finitary behaviours is defined. We then investigate definability and compactness for finitary coalgebraic modal logic, show that the final object in Behω(T) generalises the notion of a canonical model in modal logic, and study the topology induced on a coalgebra by the finitary part of the terminal sequence.

One of the biggest problems in computer graphics is displaying huge geometric models at interactive rates. A lot of work has been done to achieve the required frame-rates in architecture, simulation, computer-aided design and entertainment applications. In this paper, a system that enables walkthrough in complex environments using level-of-detail approximations is explained. The system uses hierarchical triangulated models as input. In the preprocessing phase, multiresolution models of objects are created using polygonal simplification techniques. A new Petri-net-based top-down synthesis technique for supervisory control of Discrete Event Systems (DES) is proposed to solve the forbidden state problem. The supervisors obtained are compiled supervisors, whose control policy is represented as a net structure, as opposed to mapping supervisors, whose control policy is computed as a feedback function of the marking of the system. The compiled supervisors obtained by using the technique proposed in this paper are both nonblocking and maximally permissive. A modified version of the Poisson Summation Formula is derived,involving the Fourier-Bessel Transform of the kernel function, as opposed to the conventional Fourier Transform engaged in the standard formula. This novel form can be applied to problems employing cylindrical coordinates, such as the fast evaluation of the dyadic Green's function in a waveguide or cavity of circular cross-section.

A time domain version of the uniform geometrical theory of diffraction (TD-UTD) is developed to describe, in essentially closed form, the field which is produced via slope diffraction at a perfectly conducting, arbitrarily curved wedge excited by a time impulsive wave that exhibits a rapid spatial variation near the edge of the wedge. This TD-UTD slope diffracted field for a curved wedge is obtained by a Fourier inversion of the corresponding frequency domain UTD expression. The optical rib waveguide (ORW) plays an important role in the design of several integrated optical devices. Various methods have been proposed for obtaining the modal field solutions in ORW. However, to the best of our knowledge none of them is capable of providing accurate full-wave benchmark solutions. Here we present a novel MoM approach wherein the modes of a loaded rectangular waveguide are utilized as basis functions and demonstrate that this approach is very efficient and yields highly accurate full-wave results which can serve as benchmark solutions in assessing the quality of the data reported in the literature.

With the increasing demand for distributed real-time systems, the need for programming tools and execution platforms useful in development of such application systems is widely recognized. This paper presents CORD-RTS, an efficient middleware architecture that provides support for real-time distributed object programming. The communication infrastructure and various components of the middleware, which support several modes of interactions among distributed real-time objects, along with its real-time features and services, are discussed in detail.
