A primary cause of degraded performance in pointing and tracking systems is the jitter in the line of sight. This jitter is caused by the residual angular motion of the stabilized platform within the system. A major contributor to this residual motion is the gyroscope noise. Thus, to reduce angular jitter, lower-noise gyroscopes are selected, generally at a premium cost. Another approach is to enhance the accuracy of the gyroscopes electronically (by suppressing measurement noise) before their outputs are fed into the stabilized platform control system. Optimal filtering techniques can be used for this purpose. The goal is to estimate …

To alter feedstock material, the material is exposed to laser radiation applied at a selected angle of incidence, intensity and wavelength related to the refractive index of the feedstock material. Fine uniform particles may be formed through vapor explosion and/or plasma formation and used by this method to coat surfaces, such as with paint or adhesive or to supply uniform small particles to a heat engine. Moreover, moving materials such as a column of liquid may be subjected to high internal pressure and temperature for creating physical and chemical changes.

Although much work has been done toward developing lossless algorithms for compressing image data, most techniques reported have been for two-tone or gray-scale images. It is generally accepted that a color image can be easily encoded by using a gray-scale compression technique on each of the three accounts the substantial correlations that are present between color planes. Although several lossy compression schemes that exploit such correlations have been reported in the literature, we are not aware of any such techniques for lossless compression. Complex index-of-refraction values of RP-1 liquid rocket fuel are reported at laser wavelengths of 0.193 m (ArF excimer), 0.4765 m (argon ion), 0.488 im (argon ion), 0.5145 ji.m (argon ion), 0.532 m (Nd-YAG, frequency doubled), 0.6328 pm (He-Ne), 1 .064 im (Nd-YAG), and 10.5915 im (C02). The imaginary part of the index of refraction (k) is determined by traditional transmission methods. The real part (flr) at the specific laser lines is determined using reflectance measurements, critical-angle measurements, Mueller matrix elements, and Michelson interferometric measurements. A simple yet efficient image data compression method is presented. This method is based on coding only those segments of the image that are perceptually significant to the reconstruction of the image. Sequences of image pixels whose gray-level differences from the pixels of the previous row exceed two prespecified thresholds are considered significant. These pixels are coded using a differential pulse code modulation scheme that uses a 15-level recursively indexed nonuniform quantizer for the first pixel in a segment and a 7-level recursively indexed nonuniform quantizer for all other pixels in the segment. A new platform stabilization approach is described where miature, low-cost, linear accelerometers are used (instead of gyroscopes) for line-of-sight (LOS) stabilization. This is accomplished by placing the accelerometers at strategic locations and combining their outputs so that angular motion is determined from linear acceleration measurements. The control system uses the sensed angular accelerations to generate movement commands for the gimbal servomotors in the stabilization platform. This counterrotates the imaging device to stabilize its LOS. The use of accelerometers allows the servo system to operate in an acceleration control mode, which is more desirable than position or velocity control modes, typical …

Autonomous target recognition can be assisted by using CO2 laser radar data. Of these data, range data provide 3-D geometric information and Doppler data boundaries of moving targets. A powerful 3-D feature extraction algorithm based on the Hough transform is used to obtain the orientations and dimensions of the target. This information is then utilized by an inference procedure that recognizes targets based on the available evidence from the sensory data. The experimental results using actual laser radar imagery are successful and the procedure can be used for the future development of a model-based system for target recognition.

Carrier activation and mobility were studied by Raman spectroscopy and the Hall effect in pulsed laser annealed samples of GaAs implanted with doses of Si and Se from 2.2. x 1012 to 6.0 x 1014 cm-2. The samples were annealed using a pulsed XeCl excimer laser ( = 308 nm) and a pulsed dye laser (=728 nm) with energy densities from 0.06 to 0.9 J/cm2 and pulse durations of about 10 ns. Very high carrier concentrations of 3 x 1019 and 1.5 x 1019 cm-3 were obtained for the best n-type GaAs …

A simple theoretical model is presented that allows calculation of the image produced by a spherical absorbing particle illuminated by monochromatic, coherent laser light. Results presented in this paper are restricted to a singe-lens imaging system, although generalization to more complex imaging system configurations would be straightfoward. The method uses classic Lorenz-Mie scattering theory to obtain the electromagnetic field external to an absorbing spherical particle and a Fourier optics approach to calculate the intensities in the image plane. The implantation of 150 kev molybdenum ions into polished molybdenum laser mirrors is found to increase the complex dielectric constant in the visible spectrum. Analysis using the Bruggeman effective medium approximation demonstrates that the increase is due to surface smoothing and that the surface is made nearly atomically smooth by a fluence of 5 x 1015 /cm2. Implantation of Au at 1Mev caused considerable microscopic roughening, as well as a change in the bulk optical properties. 3 MeV Ni ion implantation caused only a slight surface roughening. Atomic hydrogen, for use as a fuel or as an explosive, is stored in the presence of a strong magnetic field in exfoliated layered compounds such as molybdenum disulfide or an elemental layer material such as graphite. The compound is maintained at liquid temperatures and the atomic hydrogen is collected on the surfaces of the layered compound which are exposed during delamination (exfoliation). The strong magnetic field and the low temperature combine to prevent the atoms of hydrogen from recombining to form molecules.

The Shubnikov-deHaas (SdH) effect has been used to study the electronic properties of graphite intercalated with PdC12 (stage 3), FeC13 (stages 2, 4, 6, and 11), CuC12 (stage 1), and WC16 (stage 5). For the palladium chloride, ferric chloride, and copper chloride intercalants the SdH spectra are similar: these show frequencies of approximately, 27, 80, 380, and 550 Tesla for fields parallel to the c-axis. The effective masses have been measured for each of these carriers, and are of the order of 0.1 m0, where m0 is the free electron mass. These carriers …

A magnetometer utilizing a single crystal of Bi2Se3 having a rhombohedral crystal structure is described along with a method for making such a device. The Bi2Se3 has a positive or negative Hall coefficient and a carrier concentration of about 1018to1020 per cubic centimeter.
