Graphene On Pt(111): Growth And Substrate Interaction, Peter Sutter, Jerzy T. Sadowski, Eli Sutter
Graphene On Pt(111): Growth And Substrate Interaction, Peter Sutter, Jerzy T. Sadowski, Eli Sutter
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications
In situ low-energy electron microscopy (LEEM) of graphene growth combined with measurements of the graphene structure and electronic band structure has been used to study graphene on Pt (111). Growth by carbon segregation produces macroscopic monolayer graphene domains extending continuously across Pt (111) substrate steps and bounded by strongly faceted edges. LEEM during cooling from the growth temperature shows the propagation of wrinkles in the graphene sheet, driven by thermal stress. The lattice mismatch between graphene and Pt (111) is accommodated by moiré structures with a large number of different rotational variants, without a clear preference for a particular interface …
Quality-Driven Cross Layer Design For Multimedia Security Over Resource Constrained Wireless Sensor Networks, Wei Wang
Department of Computer Electronics and Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
The strong need for security guarantee, e.g., integrity and authenticity, as well as privacy and confidentiality in wireless multimedia services has driven the development of an emerging research area in low cost Wireless Multimedia Sensor Networks (WMSNs). Unfortunately, those conventional encryption and authentication techniques cannot be applied directly to WMSNs due to inborn challenges such as extremely limited energy, computing and bandwidth resources. This dissertation provides a quality-driven security design and resource allocation framework for WMSNs. The contribution of this dissertation bridges the inter-disciplinary research gap between high layer multimedia signal processing and low layer computer networking. It formulates the …
Biological Sequence Simulation For Testing Complex Evolutionary Hypotheses: Indel-Seq-Gen Version 2.0, Cory L. Strope
Biological Sequence Simulation For Testing Complex Evolutionary Hypotheses: Indel-Seq-Gen Version 2.0, Cory L. Strope
School of Computing: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Reconstructing the evolutionary history of biological sequences will provide a better understanding of mechanisms of sequence divergence and functional evolution. Long-term sequence evolution includes not only substitutions of residues but also more dynamic changes such as insertion, deletion, and long-range rearrangements. Such dynamic changes make reconstructing sequence evolution history difficult and affect the accuracy of molecular evolutionary methods, such as multiple sequence alignments (MSAs) and phylogenetic methods. In order to test the accuracy of these methods, benchmark datasets are required. However, currently available benchmark datasets have limitations in their sizes and evolutionary histories of the included sequences are unknown. These …

Classification, Clustering And Data-Mining Of Biological Data, Thomas Triplet
School of Computing: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
The proliferation of biological databases and the easy access enabled by the Internet is having a beneficial impact on biological sciences and transforming the way research is conducted. There are currently over 1,100 molecular biology databases dispersed throughout the Internet. However, very few of them integrate data from multiple sources. To assist in the functional and evolutionary analysis of the abundant number of novel proteins, we introduce the PROFESS (PROtein Function, Evolution, Structure and Sequence) database that integrates data from various biological sources. PROFESS is freely available at http://cse.unl.edu/~profess/. Our database is designed to be versatile and expandable and …
Towards Supervised Autonomous Task Completion Using An In Vivo Surgical Robot, Jason J. Dumpert
Towards Supervised Autonomous Task Completion Using An In Vivo Surgical Robot, Jason J. Dumpert
Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Laparoscopy is a minimally invasive alternative to traditional abdominal surgery. Unlike traditional surgery, a laparoscopic procedure can be completed using small incisions. The use of these small incision results in reduced pain to the patient, shorter recovery times, and less trauma to skin, muscle and other tissues. However, these benefits to the patient are offset by the increased difficulty to the surgeon performing the procedure. These difficulties include reduced dexterity, reduced perception, and longer procedure times. The use of small in vivo robotic devices in minimally invasive surgery is one possible solution to these problems. The movement of these devices …
Temporal Data Classification Using Linear Classifiers, Peter Revesz, Thomas Triplet
Temporal Data Classification Using Linear Classifiers, Peter Revesz, Thomas Triplet
School of Computing: Conference and Workshop Papers
Data classification is usually based on measurements recorded at the same time. This paper considers temporal data classification where the input is a temporal database that describes measurements over a period of time in history while the predicted class is expected to occur in the future. We describe a new temporal classification method that improves the accuracy of standard classification methods. The benefits of the method are tested on weather forecasting using the meteorological database from the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality.
Exploiting Set-Level Non-Uniformity Of Capacity Demand To Enhance Cmp Cooperative Caching, Dongyuan Zhan, Hong Jiang, Sharad C. Seth
Exploiting Set-Level Non-Uniformity Of Capacity Demand To Enhance Cmp Cooperative Caching, Dongyuan Zhan, Hong Jiang, Sharad C. Seth
School of Computing: Technical Reports
As the Memory Wall remains a bottleneck for Chip Multiprocessors (CMP), the effective management of CMP last level caches becomes of paramount importance in minimizing expensive off-chip memory accesses. For the CMPs with private last level caches, Cooperative Caching (CC) has been proposed to enable capacity sharing among private caches by spilling an evicted block from one cache to another. But this eviction-driven CC does not necessarily promote cache performance since it implicitly favors the applications full of block evictions regardless of their real capacity demand. The recent Dynamic Spill-Receive (DSR) paradigm improves cooperative caching by prioritizing applications with higher …
Polarization Diversity For Indoor Wireless Communications, Tadeusz Wysocki, Jason Uher, Beata J. Wysocki
Polarization Diversity For Indoor Wireless Communications, Tadeusz Wysocki, Jason Uher, Beata J. Wysocki
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications (to 2015)
As the demand for high wireless data rates in indoor environments grows, we must find new ways to increase the performance of wireless links in multi-path fading. One common way to do this is to add diversity in the form of spatial or temporal diversity through the application of space-time block codes (STBCs). Recently, a method for combining STBCs with polarization diversity has been presented that allows for modeling the changes in polarization with quaternion numbers, introducing space-time-polarization block codes (STPBCs). This presentation shows some results from an initial investigation into the quality of cross polarized channels as compared to …

On The Issue Of Decoupled Decoding Of Codes Derived From Quaternion Orthogonal Designs, Tadeusz Wysocki, Beata Wysocki, Sarah Spence Adams
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications (to 2015)
Quaternion orthogonal designs (QODs) have been previously introduced as a basis for orthogonal space-time polarization block codes (OSTPBCs). This note will serve to correct statements concerning the optimality of a decoupled maximum-likelihood (ML) decoding algorithm. It will be shown that when compared to coupled decoding, the decoupled decoding is only optimal in certain cases. This raises several open problems concerning the decoding of OSTPBCs.

Effect Of Sample Timing On Ls Channel Estimation, Jason Uher, Tadeusz Wysocki, Beata Wysocki
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications (to 2015)
As block coding and intelligent receiver combining in multi-antenna systems moves from the theoretical into the physical domain, it is necessary to apply robust analysis to the problems encountered with the development of real radio systems that are often overlooked during theoretical development of methods and processes. One such problem is the lack of synchronization between the transmitter and receiver sampling clocks. This text attempts to analyze the significance of poorly correcting for differences in the transmit and receive sample clocks by simulating the BER of an Alamouti space-time coded system under a variety of sample rates and clock offsets. …

Pre-Filtering Of Self-Encoded Spread Spectrum In Dense Multipath Channels, Won Mee Jang, Lim Nguyen
Pre-Filtering Of Self-Encoded Spread Spectrum In Dense Multipath Channels, Won Mee Jang, Lim Nguyen
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications (to 2015)
We present pre-filtering methods of self-encoded spread spectrum (SESS) in dense multipath channels. SESS eliminates the need for traditional transmit and receive pseudo noise (PN) code generators. In this paper, we propose multipath management of SESS in dense multipath urban environments. We propose a transmitter pre-filtering method that retains only good paths that contribute to the data decision positively at the receiver, and eliminates undesirable paths. The proposed technique significantly improves the system performance while increasing the transmit power moderately.

Ergodic Capacity Of Cooperative Networks Using Adaptive Transmission And Selection Combining, Bao Q. Vo-Nguyen, Trung Q. Duong, Nguyen N. Tran
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications (to 2015)
Closed-form expressions for ergodic capacity of repetition-based cooperative networks under adaptive transmission with selection combining are derived. According to the changing channel conditions, the source adapts its rate and/or power level while the relays simply amplify and then forward the received signals. Specifically, three different adaptive techniques are investigated under the assumption of independent Rayleigh fading channels: optimal simultaneous power and rate adaptation (OPRA), constant power with optimal rate adaptation (OPA) and channel inversion with fixed rate (TIFR). Among them, for an arbitrary number of relays, TIFR gives the worst channel capacity; OPRA gives the best channel capacity and ORA …

Selection Of Switching Sites In All-Optical Nework Topology Design, Shivashis Saha, Eric D. Manley, Jitender S. Deogun
School of Computing: Technical Reports
In this paper, we consider the problem of topology design for optical networks. We investigate the problem of selecting switching sites to minimize total cost of the optical network. The cost of an optical network can be expressed as a sum of three main factors: the site cost, the link cost, and the switch cost. To the best of our knowledge, this problem has not been studied in its general form as investigated in this paper. We present a mixed integer quadratic programming (MIQP) formulation of the problem to find the optimal value of the total network cost. We also …

School of Computing: Technical Reports
A design of a nonblocking, all-optical lightpath concentrator using WOC and WDM crossbar switches is presented. The proposed concentrator is highly scalable, cost-efficient, and can switch signals in both space and wavelength domains without requiring a separate wavelength conversion stage.
Deployed Software Analysis, Madeline M. Diep
Deployed Software Analysis, Madeline M. Diep
School of Computing: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Profiling can offer a valuable characterization of software behavior. The richer the characterization is, the more effective the client analyses are in supporting quality assurance activities. For today's complex software, however, obtaining a rich characterization with the input provided by in-house test suites is becoming more difficult and expensive. Extending the profiling activity to deployed environments can mitigate this shortcoming by exposing more program behavior reflecting real software usage. To make profiling of deployed software plausible, however, we need to take into consideration that there are fundamental differences between the development and the deployed environments. Deployed environments allow for less …
Robust Image And Video Coding With Adaptive Rate Control, Hongqiang Wang
Robust Image And Video Coding With Adaptive Rate Control, Hongqiang Wang
Department of Computer Electronics and Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
This dissertation is focused on the problem of rate allocation in a resource constrained environment and robustness of video coding over noise channels. A new rate allocation scheme that combines the traditional PCRD-Opt algorithm with the rho domain analysis is proposed for wavelet based image coders. The proposed scheme provides competitive performance as compared with the optimal PCRD-Opt algorithm, while with great reduction on complexity and computational costs. Rate allocation is developed for the Region-Of-Interest (ROI) in the wavelet transform domain for image coding. A recursive region growing method that deter mines the ROI in the transform domain is proposed. …

Scanning Tunneling Microscopy On Epitaxial Bilayer Graphene On Ruthenium (0001), Eli A. Sutter, D.P. Acharya, J.T. Sadowski, P. Sutter
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications
The atomic structure of epitaxial single and bilayer graphene on Ru(0001) was studied by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). High-resolution imaging of the surface of single layer graphene shows a moiré with pronounced buckling and broken A/B carbon sublayer symmetry due to a strong interaction with the metal substrate. The top sheet of bilayer graphene is largely unperturbed by residual interactions with the substrate. Screened from the metal substrate, it shows the hallmarks of freestanding monolayer graphene: a honeycomb structure with equivalent carbon sublattices imaged in STM and a linear dispersion of bands near the Dirac point.

Media coverage of sustainability and "green" issues is hard to ignore these days. But less clear is a specific understanding of what this agenda means within higher ed IT organizations. For starters, it's useful to self-assess whether your campus is a leading innovator on all things "green" or satisfied to remain inconspicuous in the middle of the pack. If your institution is trailing but wants to assert a leadership role in environmental stewardship, you need to get engaged to understand what it will take to catch up and how IT can be a leader, not just a contributor, to such …

Ground-Plane Quasicloaking For Free Space, Efthymios Kallos, Christos Argyropoulos, Yang Hao
Ground-Plane Quasicloaking For Free Space, Efthymios Kallos, Christos Argyropoulos, Yang Hao
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications
Ground-plane cloak designs are presented, which minimize scattering of electromagnetic radiation from metallic objects in the visible spectrum. It is showed that simplified ground-plane cloaks made from only a few blocks of all-dielectric isotropic materials, either embedded in a background medium or in free space, can provide considerable cloaking performance while maintaining their broadband nature. A design which operates isolated in free space that cloaks radiation originating from a specified direction is also analyzed. These schemes should be much easier to be demonstrated experimentally compared to full designs.

Free-ranging livestock are classically controlled by herders. Holding, moving, or gathering free-ranging cattle requires flexible husbandry practices for efficient and effective lowstress animal management. Behavioral theory and practical experience indicates cattle can be taught to respond to auditory cues. Preliminary research has demonstrated that cows can be gathered autonomously using recorded audio cues associated with manual gathering. However, efficient gathering requires movement in the proper direction. Therefore, we believe using audio cues administered from directional virtual fencing (DVF™) equipment can facilitate proper animal orientation and facilitate the gathering of animals with minimal human intervention. Results from applying directional audio cues …
Achievable Rates And Resource Allocation Strategies For Imperfectly Known Fading Relay Channels, Junwei Zhang, M. Cenk Gursoy
Achievable Rates And Resource Allocation Strategies For Imperfectly Known Fading Relay Channels, Junwei Zhang, M. Cenk Gursoy
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications
Achievable rates and resource allocation strategies for imperfectly known fading relay channels are studied. It is assumed that communication starts with the network training phase in which the receivers estimate the fading coefficients. Achievable rate expressions for amplify-and-forward and decode-and-forward relaying schemes with different degrees of cooperation are obtained. We identify efficient strategies in three resource allocation problems: (1) power allocation between data and training symbols, (2) time/bandwidth allocation to the relay, and (3) power allocation between the source and relay in the presence of total power constraints. It is noted that unless the source-relay channel quality is high, cooperation …

Despite its economical, cultural, and biological importance, there has not been a large scale sequencing project to date for Camelus dromedarius. With the goal of sequencing complete DNA of the organism, we first established and sequenced camel EST libraries, generating 70,272 reads. Following trimming, chimera check, repeat masking, cluster and assembly, we obtained 23,602 putative gene sequences, out of which over 4,500 potentially novel or fast evolving gene sequences do not carry any homology to other available genomes. Functional annotation of sequences with similarities in nucleotide and protein databases has been obtained using Gene Ontology classification. Comparison to available …

Simulation Of Coherent Radar Imaging Using Continuous Wave Noise Radar, Jing Xu, Michael Hoffman, B.L. Cheong, R.D. Palmer
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications
A computationally simple cross-correlation model for multiple backscattering from a continuous wave (CW) noise radar is developed and verified with theoretical analysis and brute-force time-domain simulations. Based on this cross-correlation model, a modification of an existing numerical method originally developed by Holdsworth and Reid for spaced antenna (SA) pulsed radar is used to simulate the estimated cross correlation corresponding to atmospheric backscattering using a coherent CW noise radar. Subse- quently, coherent radar imaging (CRI) processing comparisons between the CW noise radar and a con- ventional pulsed radar are presented that verify the potential of CW noise radar for atmospheric imaging.
