A Method For Comparative Analysis Of Trusted Execution Environments, Stephano Cetola Jun 2021

A Method For Comparative Analysis Of Trusted Execution Environments, Stephano Cetola

Dissertations and Theses

The problem of secure remote computation has become a serious concern of hardware manufacturers and software developers alike. Trusted Execution Environments (TEEs) are a solution to the problem of secure remote computation in applications ranging from "chip and pin" financial transactions to intellectual property protection in modern gaming systems. While extensive literature has been published about many of these technologies, there exists no current model for comparing TEEs. This thesis provides hardware architects and designers with a set of tools for comparing TEEs. I do so by examining several properties of a TEE and comparing their implementations in several technologies. …

Physically Based Rendering Techniques To Visualize Thin-Film Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics Fluid Simulations, Aditya H. Prasad

Dartmouth College Undergraduate Theses

This thesis introduces a methodology and workflow I developed to visualize smoothed hydrodynamic particle based simulations for the research paper ’Thin-Film Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics Fluid’ (2021), that I co-authored. I introduce a physically based rendering model which allows point cloud simulation data representing thin film fluids and bubbles to be rendered in a photorealistic manner. This includes simulating the optic phenomenon of thin-film interference and rendering the resulting iridescent patterns. The key to the model lies in the implementation of a physically based surface shader that accounts for the interference of infinitely many internally reflected rays in its bidirectional surface …

Object Manipulation With Modular Planar Tensegrity Robots, Maxine Perroni-Scharf Jun 2021

Object Manipulation With Modular Planar Tensegrity Robots, Maxine Perroni-Scharf

Dartmouth College Undergraduate Theses

This thesis explores the creation of a novel two-dimensional tensegrity-based mod- ular system. When individual planar modules are linked together, they form a larger tensegrity robot that can be used to achieve non-prehensile manipulation. The first half of this dissertation focuses on the study of preexisting types of tensegrity mod- ules and proposes different possible structures and arrangements of modules. The second half describes the construction and actuation of a modular 2D robot com- posed of planar three-bar tensegrity structures. We conclude that tensegrity modules are suitably adapted to object manipulation and propose a future extension of the modular 2D …

Learning Medical Materials From Radiography Images, Carson Molder, Benjamin Lowe, Justin Zhan Jun 2021

Learning Medical Materials From Radiography Images, Carson Molder, Benjamin Lowe, Justin Zhan

Computer Science and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Deep learning models have been shown to be effective for material analysis, a subfield of computer vision, on natural images. In medicine, deep learning systems have been shown to more accurately analyze radiography images than algorithmic approaches and even experts. However, one major roadblock to applying deep learning-based material analysis on radiography images is a lack of material annotations accompanying image sets. To solve this, we first introduce an automated procedure to augment annotated radiography images into a set of material samples. Next, using a novel Siamese neural network that compares material sample pairs, called D-CNN, we demonstrate how to …

Agent-Based Semantic Role Mining For Intelligent Access Control In Multi-Domain Collaborative Applications Of Smart Cities, Rubina Ghazal, Ahmad Kamran Malik, Basit Raza, Nauman Qadeer, Nafees Qamar, Sajal Bhatia

School of Computer Science & Engineering Faculty Publications

Significance and popularity of Role-Based Access Control (RBAC) is inevitable; however, its application is highly challenging in multi-domain collaborative smart city environments. The reason is its limitations in adapting the dynamically changing information of users, tasks, access policies and resources in such applications. It also does not incorporate semantically meaningful business roles, which could have a diverse impact upon access decisions in such multi-domain collaborative business environments. We propose an Intelligent Role-based Access Control (I-RBAC) model that uses intelligent software agents for achieving intelligent access control in such highly dynamic multi-domain environments. The novelty of this model lies in using …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In this paper, we study the -impact region problem (mIR). In a context where users look for available products with top- queries, mIR identifies the part of the product space that attracts the most user attention. Specifically, mIR determines the kind of attribute values that lead a (new or existing) product to the top- result for at least a fraction of the user population. mIR has several applications, ranging from effective marketing to product improvement. Importantly, it also leads to (exact and efficient) solutions for standing top- impact problems, which were previously solved heuristically only, or whose current solutions face …

Hierarchical Scheduling For Real-Time Periodic Tasks In Symmetric Multiprocessing, Tom Springer, Peiyi Zhao Jun 2021

Hierarchical Scheduling For Real-Time Periodic Tasks In Symmetric Multiprocessing, Tom Springer, Peiyi Zhao

Engineering Faculty Articles and Research

In this paper, we present a new hierarchical scheduling framework for periodic tasks in symmetric multiprocessor (SMP) platforms. Partitioned and global scheduling are the two main approaches used by SMP based systems where global scheduling is recommended for overall performance and partitioned scheduling is recommended for hard real-time performance. Our approach combines both the global and partitioned approaches of traditional SMP-based schedulers to provide hard real-time performance guarantees for critical tasks and improved response times for soft real-time tasks. Implemented as part of VxWorks, the results are confirmed using a real-time benchmark application, where response times were improved for soft …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Coresets are succinct summaries of large datasets such that, for a given problem, the solution obtained from a coreset is provably competitive with the solution obtained from the full dataset. As such, coreset-based data summarization techniques have been successfully applied to various problems, e.g., geometric optimization, clustering, and approximate query processing, for scaling them up to massive data. In this paper, we study coresets for the maxima representation of multidimensional data: Given a set of points in R , where is a small constant, and an error parameter ∈ (0, 1), a subset ⊆ …

When Program Analysis Meets Bytecode Search: Targeted And Efficient Inter-Procedural Analysis Of Modern Android Apps In Backdroid, Daoyuan Wu, Debin Gao, Robert H. Deng, Rocky Chang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Widely-used Android static program analysis tools,e.g., Amandroid and FlowDroid, perform the whole-app interprocedural analysis that is comprehensive but fundamentallydifficult to handle modern (large) apps. The average app size hasincreased three to four times over five years. In this paper, weexplore a new paradigm of targeted inter-procedural analysis thatcan skip irrelevant code and focus only on the flows of securitysensitive sink APIs. To this end, we propose a technique calledon-the-fly bytecode search, which searches the disassembled appbytecode text just in time when a caller needs to be located. In thisway, it guides targeted (and backward) inter-procedural analysisstep by step until reaching …

Intelligent And Secure Fog-Aided Internet Of Drones, Jingjing Yao May 2021

Intelligent And Secure Fog-Aided Internet Of Drones, Jingjing Yao

Dissertations

Internet of drones (IoD), which utilize drones as Internet of Things (IoT) devices, deploys several drones in the air to collect ground information and send them to the IoD gateway for further processing. Computing tasks are usually offloaded to the cloud data center for intensive processing. However, many IoD applications require real-time processing and event response (e.g., disaster response and virtual reality applications). Hence, data processing by the remote cloud may not satisfy the strict latency requirement. Fog computing attaches fog nodes, which are equipped with computing, storage and networking resources, to IoD gateways to assume a substantial amount of …

Towards Improving The Security Of The Software Supply Chain, Hammad Afzali May 2021

Towards Improving The Security Of The Software Supply Chain, Hammad Afzali

Dissertations

A software supply chain comprises a series of steps performed to develop and distribute a software product. History has shown that each of these steps is vulnerable to attacks that can have serious repercussions and can affect many users at once. To address the attacks against the software supply chain, end users must be provided with verifiable guarantees about the individual steps of the chain and with assurances that the steps are securely chained together.

In this dissertation, the security of several individual steps in the software supply chain is enhanced. The first step of the chain, managing the source …

Improving Multi-Threaded Qos In Clouds, Weiwei Jia May 2021

Improving Multi-Threaded Qos In Clouds, Weiwei Jia

Dissertations

Multi-threading and resource sharing are pervasive and critical in clouds and data-centers. In order to ease management, save energy and improve resource utilization, multi-threaded applications from different tenants are often encapsulated in virtual machines (VMs) and consolidated on to the same servers. Unfortunately, despite much effort, it is still extremely challenging to maintain high quality of service (QoS) for multi-threaded applications of different tenants in clouds, and these applications often suffer severe performance degradation, poor scalability, unfair resource allocation, and so on.

The dissertation identifies the causes of the QoS problems and improves the QoS of multi-threaded execution with three …

Convolutional Neural Networks For Deflate Data Encoding Classification Of High Entropy File Fragments, Nehal Ameen

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Data reconstruction is significantly improved in terms of speed and accuracy by reliable data encoding fragment classification. To date, work on this problem has been successful with file structures of low entropy that contain sparse data, such as large tables or logs. Classifying compressed, encrypted, and random data that exhibit high entropy is an inherently difficult problem that requires more advanced classification approaches. We explore the ability of convolutional neural networks and word embeddings to classify deflate data encoding of high entropy file fragments after establishing ground truth using controlled datasets. Our model is designed to either successfully classify file …

Fast Flow Reconstruction Via Robust Invertible N X N Convolution, Thanh-Dat Truong, Chi Nhan Duong, Minh-Triet Tran, Ngan Le, Khoa Luu

Computer Science and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Flow-based generative models have recently become one of the most efficient approaches to model data generation. Indeed, they are constructed with a sequence of invertible and tractable transformations. Glow first introduced a simple type of generative flow using an invertible 1x1 convolution. However, the 1x1 convolution suffers from limited flexibility compared to the standard convolutions. In this paper, we propose a novel invertible n x n convolution approach that overcomes the limitations of the invertible 1x1 convolution. In addition, our proposed network is not only tractable and invertible but also uses fewer parameters than standard convolutions. The experiments on CIFAR-10, …

Data Forgery Detection In Automatic Generation Control: Exploration Of Automated Parameter Generation And Low-Rate Attacks, Yatish R. Dubasi May 2021

Data Forgery Detection In Automatic Generation Control: Exploration Of Automated Parameter Generation And Low-Rate Attacks, Yatish R. Dubasi

Computer Science and Computer Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses

Automatic Generation Control (AGC) is a key control system utilized in electric power systems. AGC uses frequency and tie-line power flow measurements to determine the Area Control Error (ACE). ACE is then used by the AGC to adjust power generation and maintain an acceptable power system frequency. Attackers might inject false frequency and/or tie-line power flow measurements to mislead AGC into falsely adjusting power generation, which can harm power system operations. Various data forgery detection models are studied in this thesis. First, to make the use of predictive detection models easier for users, we propose a method for automated generation …
