Check Image Processing: Webp Conversion And Micr Scan Android Application, Trevor Bliss

Computer Engineering

As more users favor smartphones over computers for simple tasks, small businesses are constantly exploring mobile options to present to their customers. This write-up documents an Android application designed for a small company, which allows users to send pictures of checks to the company’s servers for processing. The picture is taken with the devices built-in camera and is converted to Google’s new image format, WebP. The company’s server processes the check and returns the check’s MICR code as a response. This application leverages the Android NDK and JNI to use Google’s open source image conversion libraries as well as socket …

Bluemote!, Philip Kaye

Computer Engineering

In today’s society, our mobile phones are an extremely useful device when we are on the go and away from our homes; however, when we return home, our smart phone becomes just a communication tool again. Home automation is inevitable, and it will find its way into every house. The first person to commercialize it to the point where it is as easy to set-up and as affordable as a home router will end up breaking this slow trend. The key to this success is the smart phone; this should end up being the most expensive piece of hardware for …

An Interactive Visualization Model For Analyzing Data Storage System Workloads, Steven Charubhat Pungdumri Mar 2012

An Interactive Visualization Model For Analyzing Data Storage System Workloads, Steven Charubhat Pungdumri

Master's Theses

The performance of hard disks has become increasingly important as the volume of data storage increases. At the bottom level of large-scale storage networks is the hard disk. Despite the importance of hard drives in a storage network, it is often difficult to analyze the performance of hard disks due to the sheer size of the datasets seen by hard disks. Additionally, hard drive workloads can have several multi-dimensional characteristics, such as access time, queue depth and block-address space. The result is that hard drive workloads are extremely diverse and large, making extracting meaningful information from hard drive workloads very …

Strongly Complete Logics For Coalgebras, Alexander Kurz, Jiří Rosický Jan 2012

Strongly Complete Logics For Coalgebras, Alexander Kurz, Jiří Rosický

Engineering Faculty Articles and Research

Coalgebras for a functor model different types of transition systems in a uniform way. This paper focuses on a uniform account of finitary logics for set-based coalgebras. In particular, a general construction of a logic from an arbitrary set-functor is given and proven to be strongly complete under additional assumptions. We proceed in three parts.

Part I argues that sifted colimit preserving functors are those functors that preserve universal algebraic structure. Our main theorem here states that a functor preserves sifted colimits if and only if it has a finitary presentation by operations and equations. Moreover, the presentation of the …

Privacy Preserving Distributed Data Mining, Zhenmin Lin

Theses and Dissertations--Computer Science

Privacy preserving distributed data mining aims to design secure protocols which allow multiple parties to conduct collaborative data mining while protecting the data privacy. My research focuses on the design and implementation of privacy preserving two-party protocols based on homomorphic encryption. I present new results in this area, including new secure protocols for basic operations and two fundamental privacy preserving data mining protocols.

I propose a number of secure protocols for basic operations in the additive secret-sharing scheme based on homomorphic encryption. I derive a basic relationship between a secret number and its shares, with which we develop efficient secure …

Erasure Techniques In Mrd Codes, Florentin Smarandache, W.B. Vasantha Kandasamy, R. Sujatha, R.S. Raja Durai

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

In this book the authors study the erasure techniques in concatenated Maximum Rank Distance (MRD) codes. The authors for the first time in this book introduce the new notion of concatenation of MRD codes with binary codes, where we take the outer code as the RD code and the binary code as the inner code. The concatenated code consists of the codewords of the outer code expressed in terms of the alphabets of the inner code. These new class of codes are defined as CRM codes. This concatenation techniques helps one to construct any CRM code of desired minimum distance …

Neutrosophic Masses & Indeterminate Models Applications To Information Fusion, Florentin Smarandache

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

In this paper we introduce the indeterminate models in information fusion, which are due either to the existence of some indeterminate elements in the fusion space or to some indeterminate masses. The best approach for dealing with such models is the neutrosophic logic.

Completeness For The Coalgebraic Cover Modality, Clemens Kupke, Alexander Kurz, Yde Venema Jan 2012

Completeness For The Coalgebraic Cover Modality, Clemens Kupke, Alexander Kurz, Yde Venema

Engineering Faculty Articles and Research

We study the finitary version of the coalgebraic logic introduced by L. Moss. The syntax of this logic, which is introduced uniformly with respect to a coalgebraic type functor, required to preserve weak pullbacks, extends that of classical propositional logic with a so-called coalgebraic cover modality depending on the type functor. Its semantics is defined in terms of a categorically defined relation lifting operation.

As the main contributions of our paper we introduce a derivation system, and prove that it provides a sound and complete axiomatization for the collection of coalgebraically valid inequalities. Our soundness and completeness proof is algebraic, …

Coalgebraic Logics (Dagstuhl Seminar 12411), Ernst-Erich Doberkat, Alexander Kurz Jan 2012

Coalgebraic Logics (Dagstuhl Seminar 12411), Ernst-Erich Doberkat, Alexander Kurz

Engineering Faculty Articles and Research

This report documents the program and the outcomes of Dagstuhl Seminar 12411 “Coalgebraic Logics”. The seminar deals with recent developments in the area of coalgebraic logic, a branch of logics which combines modal logics with coalgebraic semantics. Modal logic finds its uses when reasoning about behavioural and temporal properties of computation and communication, coalgebras have evolved into a general theory of systems. Consequently, it is natural to combine both areas for a mathematical description of system specification. Coalgebraic logics are closely related to the broader categories semantics/formal methods and verification/logic.

Data Exploration Interface For Digital Forensics, Varun Dontula Dec 2011

Data Exploration Interface For Digital Forensics, Varun Dontula

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

The fast capacity growth of cheap storage devices presents an ever-growing problem of scale for digital forensic investigations. One aspect of scale problem in the forensic process is the need for new approaches to visually presenting and analyzing large amounts of data. Current generation of tools universally employ three basic GUI components—trees, tables, and viewers—to present all relevant information. This approach is not scalable as increasing the size of the input data leads to a proportional increase in the amount of data presented to the analyst.

We present an alternative approach, which leverages data visualization techniques to provide a more …

Cplop - Cal Poly's Library Of Pyroprints, Kevin Webb Dec 2011

Cplop - Cal Poly's Library Of Pyroprints, Kevin Webb

Computer Engineering

California Polytechnic Library of Pyroprints, CPLOP, is a web driven data-base application that stores data from the biology’s departments E. coli Pyrosequencing project. Some of this data was stored in Excel datasheets, while data from the pyrosequencing machines was stored as just a list of random .xml files. There was no useful way to organize and store the massive amounts of data from multiple file sources in one location, nor to perform the complicated searches and comparisons that the project requires. CPLOP’s primary goal is to store such data in three organized tables that relate to one another. It was …

Digital Watermarking Security, Jonathan Blake, Shahram Latifi

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Research

As creative works (e.g. books, films, music, photographs) become increasingly available in digital formats in a highly connected world, it also becomes increasingly difficult to secure intellectual property rights. Digital watermarking is one potential technology to aid intellectual property owners in controlling and tracking the use of their works. Surveys the state of digital watermarking research and examines the attacks that the technology faces and how it fares against them. Digital watermarking is an inherently difficult design problem subject to many constraints. The technology currently faces an uphill battle to be secure against relatively simple attacks.

Performance Analysis And Optimization Of The Winnow Secret Key Reconciliation Protocol, Kevin C. Lustic Jun 2011

Performance Analysis And Optimization Of The Winnow Secret Key Reconciliation Protocol, Kevin C. Lustic

Theses and Dissertations

Currently, private communications in public and government sectors rely on methods of cryptographic key distribution that will likely be rendered obsolete the moment a full-scale quantum computer is realized, or efficient classical methods of factoring are discovered. There are alternative methods for distributing secret key material in a post-quantum era. One example of a system capable of securely distributing cryptographic key material, known as Quantum Key Distribution (QKD), is secure against quantum factorization techniques as its security rests on generally accepted laws of quantum physics. QKD protocols typically include a phase called Error Reconciliation, a clear-text classical-channel discussion between legitimate …

Chinese To English Introductory Cover Letter Generator, Jason L. Stine Jun 2011

Chinese To English Introductory Cover Letter Generator, Jason L. Stine

Liberal Arts and Engineering Studies

The Chinese to English Introductory Cover Letter Generator allows Chinese computer users who know little to no English automatically generate a self-introductory cover letter in good English. As an example, professors in English-speaking countries are increasingly receiving emails from students abroad in countries like China, and these students often need to introduce themselves in order to support their reasons for their message. Unfortunately, more often than not these letters contain poorly written English. This software aims to help solve this issue. Using a combination of a “sentence template” system and intelligent natural language processing software, the program assembles each paragraph …

This thesis investigates the addition of active pen based input to the Android mobile operating system.

The Android input framework was evaluated and modified to allow for active pen input events. Since active pens allow for their position to be detected without making contact with the screen, an …

Flexible Tuning Software: Beyond Equal Temperament, Erica Sponsler May 2011

Flexible Tuning Software: Beyond Equal Temperament, Erica Sponsler

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

The premise of this creative Capstone project was to develop a computer instrument that is capable of tuning itself flexibly in such a way as to not require a tempering of the Western scale, as is necessary for fixedly tuned instruments. The difficulty in creating such a system of tuning arises from the mathematical paradox of the musical harmonic series, which is the sequence of frequencies that sound naturally as overtones over a fundamental pitch. They follow a proportional pattern of 1:2, 2:3, 3:4, etc. These small-integer ratios of frequencies represent the consonant (in-tune) harmonic intervals. When an interval does …

Understanding movement is an important area of research for improving comfort and safety. Data collected from accelerometers and gyros attached to multiple parts of a body can be used to determine the type of physical activity in which an individual is engaging. Correlating this data with the individual's heart rate allows for the verification of the type of activity as well as observation of the amount of physical strain experienced during the activity. Additionally, data on environmental stimuli can be gathered in order to determine their effect on physical strain. Current research in the field has been limited by both …

Reconfigurable Systems: A Potential Solution To The Von Neumann Bottleneck, Damian L. Miller Apr 2011

Reconfigurable Systems: A Potential Solution To The Von Neumann Bottleneck, Damian L. Miller

Senior Honors Theses

The difficulty of overcoming the disparity between processor speeds and data access speeds, a condition known as the von Neumann bottleneck, has been a source of consternation for computer hardware developers for many years.  Although a number of temporary solutions have been proposed and implemented in modern machines, these solutions have only managed to treat the major symptoms, rather than solve the root problem.  As the number of transistors on a chip roughly doubles every two years, the von Neumann bottleneck has continued to tighten in spite of these solutions, prompting some computer hardware professionals to advocate a paradigm shift …
