An Innovative Peak Detection Algorithm For Photoplethysmography Signals: An Adaptive Segmentation Method, Ahmet Reşi̇t Kavsaoğlu, Kemal Polat, Mehmet Recep Bozkurt

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

The purpose of this paper is twofold. The first purpose is to detect M-peaks from raw photoplethysmography (PPG) signals with no preprocessing method applied to the signals. The second purpose is to estimate heart rate variability (HRV) by finding the peaks in the PPG signal. HRV is a measure of the fluctuation of the time interval between heartbeats and is calculated based on time series between strokes derived from electrocardiogram (ECG), arterial pressure (AP), or PPG signals, separately. PPG is a method widely used to measure blood volume of tissue on the basis of blood volume change in every heartbeat. …

Finger-Vein Biometric Identification Using Convolutional Neural Network, Syafeeza Ahmad Radzi, Mohamed Khalil Hani, Rabia Bakhteri Jan 2016

Finger-Vein Biometric Identification Using Convolutional Neural Network, Syafeeza Ahmad Radzi, Mohamed Khalil Hani, Rabia Bakhteri

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

A novel approach using a convolutional neural network (CNN) for finger-vein biometric identification is presented in this paper. Unlike existing biometric techniques such as fingerprint and face, vein patterns are inside the body, making them virtually impossible to replicate. This also makes finger-vein biometrics a more secure alternative without being susceptible to forgery, damage, or change with time. In conventional finger-vein recognition methods, complex image processing is required to remove noise and extract and enhance the features before the image classification can be performed in order to achieve high performance accuracy. In this regard, a significant advantage of the CNN …

A New Security Relation Between Information Rate And State Size Of A Keystream Generator, Orhun Kara, İmran Ergüler, Emi̇n Anarim

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Wireless communication in near field applications is becoming widespread. Most of the devices such as sensor networks or RFID applications are operated in constraint environments and some of these prevalent technologies require security applications. As one conclusion, the design and analysis of lightweight cryptographic algorithms has been one of the favorite research subjects over the last decade. We have seen that mostly lightweight block ciphers have been designed as symmetric encryption algorithms. The main reason is that stream ciphers are supposed to have large internal states due to the strict requirement related to their resistance against tradeoff attacks (time--memory--data tradeoff …

proportional-integral-derivate (PID) controller for an automatic voltage regulator (AVR) system using a heuristic gravitational search algorithm (GSA) based on mass interactions and Newton's law of gravity. The determination of optimal controller parameters is considered an optimization problem in which different performance indexes and a performance criterion in the time domain have been used as objective functions to test the performance and effectiveness of the GSA. In the determining process of the parameters, the designed PID controller with the proposed approach is simulated under different conditions and the performance of the controller is compared with those reported in the literature. utilities to retain their generations within maximum allowable emission levels. Therefore, in present-day power system operations, the minimization of emission pollutants along with the total fuel cost has become an important aspect in short-term generation scheduling of hydrothermal power systems. This paper presents an improved hybrid approach based on the application of chaos theory in a differential evolution (DE) algorithm for the solution of this biobjective constrained optimization problem. In this proposed methodology, self-adjusted parameter setting in DE is obtained by using chaotic sequences. Secondly, a chaotic hybridized local search mechanism is embedded in DE to avoid it from trapping …

Cascaded Half-Full-Bridge Pwm Multilevel Inverter Configuration, Charles Ikechukwu Odeh Jan 2016

Cascaded Half-Full-Bridge Pwm Multilevel Inverter Configuration, Charles Ikechukwu Odeh

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

inverter topology. It is made up of a main inverting H-bridge legs and level-clamping half-bridge circuits, each having its own dc source. The single-carrier, multilevel PWM scheme is employed to generate gating signals for the power switches. The modulation scheme is hybridized to enable the output voltage of the proposed inverter configuration to inherit the features of switching-loss reduction from fundamental PWM and good harmonic performance from multiple sinusoidal PWM. Moreover, a simple base PWM circulation scheme is also introduced in this work to obtain a resultant sequential switching hybrid PWM (SSHPWM) circulation that balances power dissipation among the four …

A Current Feedback Control Strategy For Parallel-Connected Single-Phase Inverters Using A Third-Order General-Integrator Crossover Cancellation Method, Yuan Huang, An Luo Jan 2016

A Current Feedback Control Strategy For Parallel-Connected Single-Phase Inverters Using A Third-Order General-Integrator Crossover Cancellation Method, Yuan Huang, An Luo

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Virtual impedance is usually introduced to the control system of parallel inverters in order to change the inverter equivalent output impedance and to enhance control accuracy and power sharing. In this paper, a current feedback control strategy using a third-order general-integrator crossover-cancellation method that can be implemented in a virtual impedance loop is proposed. This method consists of 2 parts: a crossover-cancellation feedback network, which achieves the band-pass effect, and a multilevel TOGI-OSG link, which acts as a filter. Compared with the conventional virtual impedance method, the proposed method can avoid derivation of output current, reduce system calculating burden, and …

The Use Of Cross-Company Fault Data For The Software Fault Prediction Problem, Çağatay Çatal Jan 2016

The Use Of Cross-Company Fault Data For The Software Fault Prediction Problem, Çağatay Çatal

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

We investigated how to use cross-company (CC) data in software fault prediction and in predicting the fault labels of software modules when there are not enough fault data. This paper involves case studies of NASA projects that can be accessed from the PROMISE repository. Case studies show that CC data help build high-performance fault predictors in the absence of fault labels and remarkable results are achieved. We suggest that companies use CC data if they do not have any historical fault data when they decide to build their fault prediction models.

Robust Multi-Criteria Optimal Fuzzy Control Of Discrete-Time Nonlinear Systems, Xin Wang, Edwin E. Yaz

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

This paper presents a novel fuzzy control design of discrete-time nonlinear systems with multiple performance criteria. The purpose behind this work is to improve the traditional fuzzy controller performance to satisfy several performance criteria simultaneously to secure quadratic optimality with an inherent stability property together with a dissipativity type of disturbance reduction. The Takagi–Sugeno-type fuzzy model is used in our control system design. By solving a linear matrix inequality at each time step, the optimal control solution can be found to satisfy mixed performance criteria. The effectiveness of the proposed technique is demonstrated by simulation of the control of the …

A Computationally Efficient Method For Calculation Of Strand Eddy Current Losses In Electric Machines, Alireza Fatemi, Dan M. Ionel, Nabeel Demerdash, Dave A. Staton, Rafal Wrobel, Yew Chuan Chong

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

In this paper, a fast finite element (FE)-based method for the calculation of eddy current losses in the stator windings of randomly wound electric machines with a focus on fractional slot concentrated winding (FSCW) permanent magnet (PM) machines will be presented. The method is particularly suitable for implementation in large-scale design optimization algorithms where a qualitative characterization of such losses at higher speeds is most beneficial for identification of the design solutions which exhibit the lowest overall losses including the ac losses in the stator windings. Unlike the common practice of assuming a constant slot fill factor, sf, for all …

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

This work investigates sensor signal processing approaches that can be used with a sensor system for direct on-site monitoring of groundwater, enabling detection and quantification of BTEX (benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylene) compounds at μg/L (ppb) concentrations in the presence of interferents commonly found in groundwater. A model for the sensor response to water samples containing multiple analytes was first formulated based on experimental results. The first signal processing approach utilizes only RLSE (recursive least squares estimation) whereas the second, a two-step processing technique, utilizes both RLSE and bank of Kalman filters for the estimation process. The estimation techniques were …

On The Analytical Formulation Of Excess Noise In Avalanche Photodiodes With Dead Space, Erum Jamil, Jeng Shiuh Cheong, J.P.R. David, Majeed M. Hayat

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

Simple, approximate formulas are developed to calculate the mean gain and excess noise factor for avalanche photodiodes using the dead-space multiplication theory in the regime of small multiplication width and high applied electric field. The accuracy of the approximation is investigated by comparing it to the exact numerical method using recursive coupled integral equations and it is found that it works for dead spaces up to 15% of the multiplication width, which is substantial. The approximation is also tested for real materials such as GaAs, InP and Si for various multiplication widths, and the results found are accurate within ∼ …

Making Sense Of Email Addresses On Drives, Neil C. Rowe, Riqui Schwamm, Michael R. Mccarrin, Ralucca Gera

Journal of Digital Forensics, Security and Law

Drives found during investigations often have useful information in the form of email addresses which can be acquired by search in the raw drive data independent of the file system. Using this data we can build a picture of the social networks that a drive owner participated in, even perhaps better than investigating their online profiles maintained by social-networking services because drives contain much data that users have not approved for public display. However, many addresses found on drives are not forensically interesting, such as sales and support links. We developed a program to filter these out using a Naïve …

Countering Noise-Based Splicing Detection Using Noise Density Transfer, Thibault Julliand, Vincent Nozick, Hugues Talbot Jan 2016

Countering Noise-Based Splicing Detection Using Noise Density Transfer, Thibault Julliand, Vincent Nozick, Hugues Talbot

Journal of Digital Forensics, Security and Law

Image splicing is a common and widespread type of manipulation, which is defined as pasting a portion of an image onto a second image. Several forensic methods have been developed to detect splicing, using various image properties. Some of these methods exploit the noise statistics of the image to try and find discrepancies. In this paper, we propose a new counter-forensic approach to eliminate the noise differences that can appear in a spliced image. This approach can also be used when creating computer graphics images, in order to endow them with a realistic noise. This is performed by changing the …

Evidential Reasoning For Forensic Readiness, Yi-Ching Liao, Hanno Langweg Jan 2016

Evidential Reasoning For Forensic Readiness, Yi-Ching Liao, Hanno Langweg

Journal of Digital Forensics, Security and Law

To learn from the past, we analyse 1,088 "computer as a target" judgements for evidential reasoning by extracting four case elements: decision, intent, fact, and evidence. Analysing the decision element is essential for studying the scale of sentence severity for cross-jurisdictional comparisons. Examining the intent element can facilitate future risk assessment. Analysing the fact element can enhance an organization's capability of analysing criminal activities for future offender profiling. Examining the evidence used against a defendant from previous judgements can facilitate the preparation of evidence for upcoming legal disclosure. Follow the concepts of argumentation diagrams, we develop an automatic judgement summarizing …

Cryptocurrency, and its underlying technologies, has been gaining popularity for transaction management beyond financial transactions. Transaction information is maintained in the block-chain, which can be used to audit the integrity of the transaction. The focus on this paper is the potential availability of block-chain technology of other transactional uses. Block-chain is one of the most stable open ledgers that preserves transaction information, and is difficult to forge. Since the information stored in block-chain is not related to personally identify information, it has the characteristics of anonymity. Also, the block-chain allows for transparent transaction verification since all information in the block-chain …

Exploring Deviant Hacker Networks (Dhn) On Social Media Platforms, Samer Al-Kateeb, Kevin Conlan, Nitin Agarwal, Ibrahim Baggili, Frank Breitinger

Electrical & Computer Engineering and Computer Science Faculty Publications

Online Social Networks (OSNs) have grown exponentially over the past decade. The initial use of social media for benign purposes (e.g., to socialize with friends, browse pictures and photographs, and communicate with family members overseas) has now transitioned to include malicious activities (e.g., cybercrime, cyberterrorism, and cyberwarfare). These nefarious uses of OSNs poses a signi_cant threat to society, and thus requires research attention. In this exploratory work, we study activities of one deviant groups: hacker groups on social media, which we term Deviant Hacker Networks (DHN). We investigated the connection between different DHNs on Twitter: how they are connected, identified …

Towards Syntactic Approximate Matching-A Pre-Processing Experiment, Doowon Jeong, Frank Breitinger, Hari Kang, Sangjin Lee

Electrical & Computer Engineering and Computer Science Faculty Publications

Over the past few years, the popularity of approximate matching algorithms (a.k.a. fuzzy hashing) has increased. Especially within the area of bytewise approximate matching, several algorithms were published, tested, and improved. It has been shown that these algorithms are powerful, however they are sometimes too precise for real world investigations. That is, even very small commonalities (e.g., in the header of a file) can cause a match. While this is a desired property, it may also lead to unwanted results. In this paper, we show that by using simple pre-processing, we significantly can influence the outcome. Although our test set …
