Emulation Of Burst-Based Adaptive Link Rates In Netfpga Towards Green Networking, Shahul Hamead H, Mirnalinee Tt, Kavi Priya D

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In recent times, energy consumption in communication media has been increasing drastically. In the literature, energy-saving techniques that enable network devices to enter sleep state or limit the data rate have been proposed to reduce energy costs. In our earlier work, we proposed an energy-saving technique called burst-based adaptive link rate (BBALR), the simulation of which assures increased energy savings. In this paper, we have emulated the hardware implementation of BBALR and compared its performance with the outputs of other prominent energy-saving policies based on dynamic link rate adaption. The energy savings are mapped from the measured sleep time and …

Improving Performance Of Indoor Localization Using Compressive Sensing Andnormal Hedge Algorithm, Saeid Hassanhosseini, Mohammad Reza Taban, Jamshid Abouei, Arash Mohammadi

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Accurate indoor localization technologies are currently in high demand in wireless sensor networks, which strongly drive the development of various wireless applications including healthcare monitoring, patient tracking and endoscopic capsule localization. The precise position determination requires exact estimation of the time varying characteristics of wireless channels. In this paper, we address this issue and propose a three-phased scheme, which employs an optimal single stage TDOA/FDOA/AOA indoor localization based on spatial sparsity. The first contribution is to formulate the received unknown signals from the emitter as a compressive sensing problem. Then, we solve an $\ell_1$ minimization problem to localize the emitter's …

Nowadays, the location-based service (LBS) has become an essential part of convenient service in people's daily life. However, the untrusted LBS servers can store lots of information about the user, such as the user's identity, location, and destination. Then the information can be used as background knowledge and combined with the query frequency of the user to launch the inference attack to obtain user's privacy. In most of the existing schemes, the author considers the algorithm of virtual location selection from the historical location of the user. However, the LBS server can infer the user's location information on the historical …

A Novel S-Box-Based Postprocessing Method For True Random Number Generation, Erdi̇nç Avaroğlu, Taner Tuncer Jan 2020

A Novel S-Box-Based Postprocessing Method For True Random Number Generation, Erdi̇nç Avaroğlu, Taner Tuncer

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

The quality of randomness in numbers generated by true random number generators (TRNGs) depends on the source of entropy. However, in TRNGs, sources of entropy are affected by environmental changes and this creates a correlation between the generated bit sequences. Postprocessing is required to remove the problem created by this correlation in TRNGs. In this study, an S-box-based postprocessing structure is proposed as an alternative to the postprocessing structures seen in the published literature. A ring oscillator (RO)-based TRNG is used to demonstrate the use of an S-box for postprocessing and the removal of correlations between number sequences. The statistical …

Harmonic Effects Optimization At A System Level Using A Harmonic Power Flowcontroller, Reza Mehri, Hossein Mokhtari

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Increase of nonlinear loads in industries has resulted in high levels of harmonic currents and consequently harmonic voltages in power networks. Harmonics have several negative effects such as higher energy losses and equipment life reduction. To reduce the levels of harmonics in power networks, different methods of harmonic suppression have been employed. The basic idea in all of these methods is to prevent harmonics from flowing into a power network at customer sides and the point of common coupling (PCC). Due to the costs, none of the existing mitigating methods result in a harmonic-free power system. The remaining harmonic currents, …

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

With the development of the Internet of Things (IoT) and the widespread use of electric vehicles (EV), vehicle-to-grid (V2G) has sparked considerable discussion as an energy-management technology. Due to the inherently high maneuverability of EVs, V2G systems must provide on-demand service for EVs. Therefore, in this work, we propose a hybrid computing architecture based on fog and cloud with applications in 5G-based V2G networks. This architecture allows the bi-directional flow of power and information between schedulable EVs and smart grids (SGs) to improve the quality of service and cost-effectiveness of energy service providers. However, it is very important to select …

Knowledge-Infused Statistical Learning For Social Good, Kaushik Roy, Manas Gaur

Publications

Humans are able to provide symbolic knowledge in structured form for potential use by an AI system in learning human-desirable concepts. In clinical settings, for instance, prediction of patient outcomes by an AI can be guided by knowledge from patient history. This history contains concepts such as treatment information, observational and drug-related information, mental health conditions, and severity of disease/disorder. Additionally, there is also often a certain graphical structure to the knowledge among the concepts, for example, ”patient symptoms cause certain tests to be taken”, which in turn affects the prescription of medication. This type of structure between human interpretable …

Rising global temperatures over the past decades is directly affecting glacier dynamics. To understand glacier fluctuations and document regional glacier-state trends, glacier-boundary detection is necessary. Debris-covered glacier (DCG) mapping, however, is notoriously difficult using conventional geospatial technology methods. Therefore, in this research for automated DCG mapping, we evaluate the utility of a convolutional neural network (CNN), which is a deep learning feed-forward neural network. The CNN inputs include Landsat satellite images, an Advanced Land Observation Satellite (ALOS) digital elevation model (DEM) and DEM-derived land-surface parameters. Our CNN based deep-learning approach named GlacierNet was designed by appropriately choosing the type, number …

Impact Of Direction Parameter In Performance Of Modified Aodv In Vanet, Afsana Ahamed, Hamid Vakilzadian

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications

A vehicular ad hoc network (VANET) is a technology in which moving cars are used as routers (nodes) to establish a reliable mobile communication network among the vehicles. Some of the drawbacks of the routing protocol, Ad hoc On-Demand Distance Vector (AODV), associated with VANETs are the end-to-end delay and packet loss. We modified the AODV routing protocols to reduce the number of route request (RREQ) and route reply (RREP) messages by adding direction parameters and two-step filtering. The two-step filtering process reduces the number of RREQ and RREP packets, reduces the packet overhead, and helps to select the stable …

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications

Numerous valuable studies on electron dynamics have focussed on the extraordinary properties of molybdenum disulfide (MoS2); however, most of them were confined to the level below the damage threshold. Here the electron dynamics of MoS2 under intense ultrafast laser irradiation was investigated by experiments and simulations. Two kinds of ablation mechanisms were revealed, which led to two distinct types of electron dynamics and final ablation morphology. At a higher fluence, the emergence of superheated liquid induced a dramatic change in the transient reflectivity and micro-honeycomb structures. At a lower fluence, the material was just removed by sublimation, and the ablation …
