This paper presents a systematic solution to the persistent problem of buffer overflow attacks. Buffer overflow attacks gained notoriety in 1988 as part of the Morris Worm incident on the Internet. While it is fairly simple to fix individual buffer overflow vulnerabilities, buffer overflow attacks continue to this day. Hundreds of attacks have been discovered, and while most of the obvious vulnerabilities have now been patched, more sophisticated buffer overflow attacks continue to emerge.
We describe StackGuard: a simple compiler technique that virtually eliminates buffer overflow vulnerabilities with only modest performance penalties. Privileged programs that are recompiled with the StackGuard …

The invention of the Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) has led to a number of interesting developments. One is the idea of providing custom hardware support for applications running on a computer. These reconfigurable computers have been shown to decrease the execution time for some applications. Based on past results, attention has subsequently turned to using reconfigurable computing in general-purpose computers (e.g. desktop and workstation environments). This thesis develops a design for just such a computer. The design, FPGADLX, is based on a hypothetical superscalar computer running the DLX instruction set and is generic enough in principle to be adapted …

This paper describes the design and implementation of a real-time, streaming, Internet video and audio player. The player has a number of advanced features including dynamic adaptation to changes in available bandwidth, latency and latency variation; a multi-dimensional media scaling capability driven by user-specified quality of service (QoS) requirements; and support for complex content comprising multiple synchronized video and audio streams. The player was developed as part of the QUASAR t project at Oregon Graduate Institute, is freely available, and serves as a testbed for research in adaptive resource management and QoS control.

2D-mesh and torus networks have often been proposed as the interconnection pattern for parallel computers. In addition, wormhole routing has increasingly been advocated as a method of reducing latency. Most analysis of wormhole routed networks, however, has focused on the torus and the broader class of k-ary n-cubes to which it belongs. This paper presents a performance model for the wormhole routed mesh, and it compares the performance of the mesh and torus based on theoretical and empirical analyses.

An Improved Analytical Model For Wormhole Routed Networks With Application To Butterfly Fat-Trees, Ronald I. Greenberg, Lee Guan

A performance model for wormhole routed interconnection networks is presented and applied to the butterfly fat-tree network. Experimental results agree very closely over a wide range of load rate. Novel aspects of the model, leading to accurate and simple performance predictions, include (1) use of multiple-server queues, and (2) a general method of correcting queuing results based on Poisson arrivals to apply to wormhole routing. These ideas can also be applied to other networks.

Specialization has been recognized as a powerful technique for optimizing operating systems. However, specialization has not been broadly applied beyond the research community because the current techniques, based on manual specialization, are time-consuming and error-prone. This paper describes a specialization toolkit that should help broaden the applicability of specializing operating systems by assisting in the automatic generation of specialized code, and {\em guarding} the specialized code to ensure the specialized system continues to be correct. We demonstrate the effectiveness of the toolkit by describing experiences we have had applying it in real, production environments. We report on our experiences with …

The advent of the Field Programmable Gate Array has allowed the implementation of runtime reconfigurable computer systems. These systems are capable of configuring their hardware to provide custom hardware support for software applications. Since these architectures can be reconfigured during operation, they are able to provide hardware support for a variety of applications, without removal from the system. The Air Force is currently investigating reconfigurable architectures for avionics and signal processing applications. This thesis investigates the problem of automating the application development process for reconfigurable architectures. This project involved the design and implementation of high-radix arithmetic systems based on the hybrid SDNRIRNS data representation. Some real-time applications require a real-time arithmetic system. An SDNR/RNS arithmetic system provides parallel, real-time processing. The advantages and disadvantages of high-radix SDNR/RNS arithmetic, and the feasibility of implementing SDNR/RNS arithmetic systems in CMOS VLSI technology, were investigated in this project. A common methodological model, which included the stages of analysis, design, implementation, testing, and simulation, was followed. The combination of the SDNR and RNS transforms potential complex logic networks into simpler logic blocks. It was found that when constructing a SDNRIRNS …

Virus and worm attacks that exploit system implementation details can be countered with a diversified set of implementations. Furthermore, immune systems show that attacks from previously unknown organisms require effective dynamic response. In the Synthetix project, we have been developing a specialization toolkit to improve the performance of operating system kernels. The toolkit helps programmers generate and manage diverse specialized implementations of software modules. The Tempo-C specializer tool generates different versions for both compile-time and run-time specialization. We are now adapting the toolkit to improve operating system survivability against implementations attacks.

This paper compares message routing capabilities of important networks proposed for general-purpose parallel computing. All the networks have been proven to have some type of universality property, i.e., an ability to simulate other networks of comparable cost with modest slowdown, using appropriate cost and communication models. But in this paper we seek an empirical comparison of communication capability under typical direct use rather than an analysis of worst-case results for simulating message traffic of another network.

This paper provides empirical comparison of the communication capabilities of two area-universal networks, the fat-tree and the fat-pyramid, to the popular mesh and hypercube networks for parallel computation. While area-universal networks have been proven capable of simulating, with modest slowdown, any computation of any other network of comparable area, prior work has generally left open the question of how area-universal networks compare to other networks in practice. Comparisons are performed using techniques of throughput and latency analysis that have previously been applied to k-ary n-cube networks and using various existing models to equate the hardware cost of the networks being …

The development of a procedure to obtain cyclo-static schedules for distributed, critical real-time applications is presented in this thesis. The applications considered in this thesis are characterized by hard deadlines and periodic inputs. The applica tions are described by a data flow graph model which guarantees performance. Given the data flow graph representation, processors are scheduled to complete tasks as specified in the representation. The scheduling technique separates the scheduling of tasks in time and the assignment of processors to tasks. While different criteria exist for task scheduling, a schedule which minimizes latency and maximizes throughput is used in this …

This paper contains two sections relating to software quality issues. First, the various definitions of software quality are examined and an alternative suggested. It continues with a review of the quality model as defined by McCall, Richards and Walters in 1977 and mentions the later model of Boëhm published in 1978. Each of McCall's quality factors is reviewed and the extent to which they still apply in the late 1990s is commented on. The factors include, integrity, reliability, usability, accuracy, efficiency, maintainability, testability, flexibility,interface facility (interoperability), re-usability and transferability (portability). A customizable operating system is one that can adapt to improve its functionality or performance. The need for customizable and application-specific operating systems has been recognized for many years, but they have yet to appear in the commercial market. This paper explores the notion of operating system customizability and examines the limits of existing approaches. The paper begins by surveying system structuring approaches for the safe and efficient execution of customizable operating systems. Multimedia computing promises access to any type of visual or aural medium on the desktop. But in this networked future, will every type of media be accessible from every terminal device? Current multimedia standards do not allow content that is authored for high-bandwidth workstations to scale down for low-bandwidth applications. The problem is that application requests are commonly interpreted as requests for the highest possible quality and resource overloads are handled by ad hoc methods. We can begin to solve this problem by specifying Quality of Service (QOS) requirements based on functionality rather than on content encoding and device capabilities.

Critical real-time applications require work to be completed before a predefined deadline, else the consequences may be catastrophic. The anticipation of faults in such systems necessitates the need for fault tolerance. Fault tolerance can be achieved in many different ways. The objective of this thesis is to analyze schedules of communication resources to obtain deterministic and contention-free communication in the Algorithm To Architecture Mapping Model (ATAMM). In ATAMM, performance must be deterministic to guarantee meeting deadlines. It is difficult to achieve deterministic performance in the presence of contention during communication. This thesis develops new data-flow models to study and analyze different schedules of communication resources to achieve deterministic and contention-free communication. In using a shared network of workstations for parallel processing, it is not only important to consider heterogeneity and differences in processing power between the workstations but also the dynamics of the system as a whole. As the application of computer technology continues to proliferate and diversify, the identification and understanding of application domains is becoming increasingly important to software development methodologies. Domain analysis techniques have been developed to accumulate and formalize the knowledge necessary for successful software reuse. These techniques have been shown to be useful, but suffer from defining the domain too restrictively, burying important relationships deep in domain taxonomies, and prohibiting flexible identification of domains with common issues. Locally shared memory systems offer significant advantages over other parallel processing systems for specific classes of problems. Locally shared memory systems tend to be easier to program because explicit passing of messages is not necessary. The goal in defining a locally shared memory system is to allow only a small number of processors access to any single memory. If this goal is met, locally shared memory systems provide an architecture which is relatively simple to implement.

A lightweight user-level process(ULP) package for parallel computing is described. Each ULP has its own register context, stack, data and heap space and communication with other ULPs is performed using locally synchronous, location transparent, message passing primitives. The aim of the package is to provide support for lightweight over-decomposition, optimized local communication and transparent dynamic migration. The package supports a subset of the Parallel Virtual Machine(PVM) interface[Sun90).
